View Full Version : What would your fate/luck be with a Deck of Many Things?

I just printed out a Deck of Many things and placed the cards in some protective gaming card sleeves. Being a huge fan of this item (most likely due to my personality :D) I decided to pull some cards, to see what my luck would have been if it were the real thing.

I stated beforehand that I would pull three cards, and so did. My results are as follows.

Donjon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#donjon)
Skull (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#skull)
Vizier (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#vizier)

Yeah...for once I am glad D&D is only make-believe.

So, what would you have gotten?

For those of you who do not have any playing cards or tarot cards, below is a random playing cards generator, and below that is the Deck of Many things in the d20 SRD.

I drew 3 as well;

The Key (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#key)
The Fates (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#fates)
The Comet (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#comet)

I've got some outstanding synergy between my cards!

Ah, the good old Deck of Many Things. It's my favorite artifact, one that exists in all of my games at some point or another. In fact, I love it so much that I managed to purchase the Green Ronin game accessory that is an actual Deck of Many Things. Now, as for a draw or three...

Draw 1: The Star! Wonderful draw, and I'm feeling good...

Draw 2: Oooo, the Flames... Not so great.

Draw 3: WOOHOOO!!!! The Moon!! I'm a lucky man tonight!! (Also, I rolled a d4, and got a 3, so go me! 3 wishes!)

Also, this a good time to share the story of the time a player of mine drew the Moon card 3 times in a row... yeah... that was messed up. >_>

I have been wanting to buy that deck from Green Ronin for months now. I haven't, because I have not been able to find out what the cards look like, and most importantly if/what information is printed on each.

Can you please tell me if these are just art cards based off the description of the cards in the DMG, or if they have the rules for each card printed on each card? I am worried it might be the later, since as a DM I like to keep some things a surprise, and on at least one card I like to take a little creative license (such as I did for a player with the Throne Card).

Each card is a very pretty illustration. However, the deck does come with a pair of rules cards copied right from the DMG. If you want to keep the cards effects secret, just hide the extra rules cards, and your players won't know the difference.

It is completely worth buying. I have no regrets.

The Star, nice. +2 Ability score bonus?

Ruin. Boo. No money? I want my money back!

Throne. Yay! I get a castle thingy! And diplomacy stuff...hehe.

Boost to Charisma, and I'm a regular diplomat!

Draw 3: Idiot: Roll after mod: 3 Ouch
Draw 4: The Fates: again, useful
Draw 5: Star: Intellignence returns if i get a say
Draw 6: Comet: Power
Draw 7: Key: HELOOOOOOOO relic
Draw 8: Flames: Ok, so I know where Comet is going to be heading me now...
Draw 9: Skull: may be using up a Fate on this (is that allowed?)
Draw 10: Jester: ooh, fun. experience it is

Draw 12: Knight: ooh...minion...
Draw 13: Gem

Damn. You managed to survive that, and you got off quite well (plus the remaining wish(es)!

And by RAW I believe that yes, a Fate can be used on an affect from the same deck. However, as always DM discretion can come into play.

I am now wondering if it would be the level 4 warrior who betrays you.

The Void (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#theVoid) - Well my other draws are now useless...
The Moon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#moon) - 3 wishes. Wish one: FREE ME!
Jester (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#jester) - Two More cards please :)

Sun (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#sun) - Magic loot, not bad.
Knight (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#knight) - Cool, I have a manservant.

Comet: Defeat the next monster you meet to gain one level.
Euryale: -1 penalty on all saving throws henceforth.

King of diamonds - Sun - Gain beneficial wondrous item and 50000 xp - Well, considering my alignment test put me at level two, that is a nice bump in levels.

Two of diamonds - Comet - Defeat the next monster to gain a level - Excellent, lol, more XP.

Joker with trademark - The fool - Lose 10 000xp, you must draw again - Well, I'm still over 40000 XP up, lol.

NEXT CARD

Queen of Hearts - The Hierophant - Gain a major magic weapon - Well... That'll help me defeat that monster coming after me.

Looks like my brush with the Deck of Many Things turned me into a hero.

Eurus

Well that's just not nice.

1: Balance
2: Talons
3: Sun

So first I become evil (or some drastically different alignment, anyway), then I lose every magical possession I own. Then I get 50,000 Exp and one medium wondrous item to compensate. But I'm evil now. X_X

Euryale,
Fates (Useful!)
Moon!
Another moon... :smallconfused:
Star.

Wow... I'm too lucky...
Now how the heck did I get two moons in a row? No clue.

So, first question, how much is a wish worth?

Well... Copper is $3.4/lb.

Gold is $814.5/troy ounce.

16 troy ounces per troy pound, and I guess gold is most efficient.

Ok, so a wish is 500 lb gold, or 8000 ounces, or 6.4 million dollars.

Not bad, though I need to figure out how to use all my wishes in 7 minutes.

Ok, so I have a +2, put that in Int. 6 wishes.

Um...Snap. I can get money, and duplicate spells, but what I really need are levels. Oh well...

So, I can start life as a millionare, and become a genius. I can also counteract one poor result in my life.

Any ideas? I bet my +2 INT from star would help me decide :smallsigh:

I think you can use one wish, to duplicate Greater Restoration, to remove the effects of Idiot.

Telonius

Okay, here's what I got.
Queen of Spades - 10 of Swords. Euryale. -1 on all saving throws. :smallfrown:
Ace of Hearts - 3 of Cups. The Fates. Avoid any situation I choose (once). So it looks like that Queen didn't actually hurt me!
Red Joker .... does this count as with or without the trademark? :smallconfused:

If it's bad, I lose 10,000 XP and take one more draw:
King of Clubs - 8 of Swords. The Void. Body functions, but soul is trapped elsewhere. Noooooooo!

If it's good, I'll take the two draws instead of the XP.
King of Diamonds - The Sun. Sun. Beneficial Medium Wondrous item and 50,000XP! Woohoo!
Jack of Hearts - Page of Swords. Knight. Gain the services of a 4th-level Fighter. So I'm friends with a Special Ops guy now.

Hmmm...lets see.

I got...

Gem (Actual gems please, I can probably sell'em for more then the market average)
Fates
The...er...Red Joker. I'm not sure if that's the trade-marked one or not.
The Void (So I'll use the Fates to Avoid that)

If the Fool...
The Vizier

if the Jester
I lose all property (NO!! NOT MY D&D BOOKS YOU MANIACS! AND THE GEMS!)
And another Fates card.

Recaiden
2008-08-15, 11:45 AM
I would draw 5 cards

Flames...Not good.
Fates... Nice
Jester... Take the xp to level 5
Skull...Using my fates card
Vizier...Good.

So I know 1 answer (possibly, "How do I stop this outsider?") and am level 5.

You reshuffle the deck after each draw, but remove jester and Fool if drawn.

Maybe all you people actually turned from evil to good, or from lawful to chaotic?

Ace of Clubs All magic items you possess disappear permanently:

Mixed results but overall favorable unless I was a wizard or high level L12+ PC with 88,000+ GP I did pretty well coming out ahead as a Diplomancer (+6 to Diplomacy) with a Small Keep (Value of 150,000 GP DMG page 101) and a bump to Charisma along with a new enemy for being so charming and popular and losing all my magic items.:smallcool:

Nope I like the Deck of Many Things but finding a deck of playing cards (never seem to be around when I want them for the Deck draws) and sorting it out was always a hassle so your link is nice. Click off a few cards and truly random.

Here's a scenario question for everyone.

You draw Ace of Hearts The Fates before you draw a bad card and use it to avoid the results of a bad draw.

Does it totally negate the bad draw as one of your draws and allow the PC to make another draw or does the avoided bad draw count still count against the stated draws but just negate the effect of the draw? I can see how either scenario could play out in a game.

1)Queen of spades.- Euryale: -1 to saving throws (bad start..)
2)King of hearts.- Throne: +6 to diplomacy and a keep (good, i got my own place now!)
3)two of diamonds.- one level if next monster is defeated. (considering than an animal is a monster...i'll probably have to kill a pidgeon...and fail at it...)
4)Ace of diamonds.- Vizier (saving this...)
5)red joker.- Fool (goddammit....)
6)Ace of hearts.- The Fates (boy, that would had been useful earlier..)

this could be enve more interesting if we added the Deck of transformation from Races of Eberron..

Then I got the Moon so I get to wish for things.

Then I got the Rogue but I think I'll fate that whole draw away. Using ^ that trick.

On the actual third draw I get the Comet. So I fight something and level up.

Do you have to kill the thing to get the level?
Because if you didn't you could just hit a guy in the crotch, bribe him not to hit you back, and claim victory.

Depends on wording. Fates undoes one thing, are you undoing the card being drawn or undoing the effect the card had on you? Personally since it is so specific in saying one thing is undone for you alone, I would say if you undid drawing the card, the effect would still happen (read: I'd default saying the effect was undone).

Comet
The character must single-handedly defeat the next hostile monster or monsters encountered, or the benefit is lost. If successful, the character gains enough XP to attain the next experience level.

Unless you hit a hostile guy in the balls then diplo-cheese him, no. I think I'd let diplomacy fly though depending on the circumstances. Never says kill, just defeat.

The Fates (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#fates)

The Void (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#theVoid)

Hmm. Thankfully, due to my first draw, I can go back and say, "I'm not going to waste my time with that stupid deck of yours, pal. Go bother someone else!"

Or "I'm only drawing one card".

Or "I'm only drawing one card".

Oh wait, I was thinking that the deck transcended our conceptions of time and space and wouldn't necessarily be the same if I were to draw one. That's a houserule I did to screw with someone - forgot it wasn't the norm.

Yeah, I guess one card could work out fine.

Although, as a safety precaution, I'll be sure to slap myself in the face whenever I go back in time, just prior to making any kind of actual decision.

OK, so I'm basing this on the assumption that I'm level 1. Like the daring before me, I shall tempt the entire deck (aka draw 22 cards). I shall be drawing them as quickly as possible, so as to try and gain everything at once (like Fate cards to counter Void cards) OK, here we go:

Throne (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#throne) - OK, things are starting off well. I am now a leader in the people's eyes, I get a keep wherever I want it, and I'm pretty diplomatic!
Talons (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#talons) - Then karma comes around and says "In return for the keep, I'm taking your magical shinies." Too bad for karma I haven't gotten any yet! Ha!:smallamused:
The Fates (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#fates) - Everyone loves Get Out of Jail Free cards.
Throne (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#throne) - Wow, a second keep, and so soon! I must be a better leader than I thought!
Moon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#moon) - Ahh, everyone loves Wishes. And I love my...1...wish.:smallannoyed:
The Fates (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#fates) - Everyone loves a second Get Out of Jail Free card.:smallbiggrin:

The Void (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#theVoid) - Hmm, it appears karma disapproves of my good-luck-only streak. Use a Get out of Jail Free card.:smallfrown:
Fool (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#fool) - Well...there goes some of my Sun...And for my Foolish next card...!
Star (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#star) - Well...that wasn't all that foolish. +2 to Int please!
The Fates (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#fates) - And I'm back up to 2 GOoJF cards!
The Void (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#theVoid) - And promptly back down to one.:smallfrown:
Donjon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#donjon) - ...And down to zero. I'm back to playing with full risk. :smalleek:
Vizier (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#vizier) - Good advice is always nice. Perhaps financial advice on my keeps? Provided I don't need it to stay alive from the rest of the deck? :smalltongue:
Flames (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#flames) - And we know what that query to the Vizier is now!
Sun (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#sun) - A second Sun! What is this, Tatooine?!
Balance (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#balance) - Well this can't be good...At least not for the people around me! :smallwink:
Throne (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#throne) - Did I just annex this one with my new alignment!? Either way I'm making people see things my way...politely too!
Key (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#key) - Hmmm...Now that I'm effectively a BBEG I do need an Ultimate Weapon. This should work nicely. I think I'll take a Super-version of the Evil Overlord List.
Sun (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#sun) - Really? Cool, I guess the Sun smiles upon your new Evil Overlord!
Star (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#star) - And another +2 to my own brilliance!
Skull (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#skull) - And karma takes one last shot. But I'm above karma now! I shall kick dogs with impunity!
Rogue (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#rogue) - And I alienated a Trusted Lieutenant. Maybe I shouldn't have kicked his dog...

Overall I'm pretty pleased with my outcome, though I don't think the local rulers will be.

Final Tally:
+18 unnamed bonus to Diplomacy
3 small keeps worth a total of 450,000 GP
1 Wish that must be used within the next minute
140,000 Experience (Level?)
3 Useful Medium Wondrous Items
+4 Inherent bonus to Intelligence
Eternal enmity of an Outsider
Advice on how to deal with said Outsider
Switched to Some Evil alignment
Kick-ass Major Artifact version of Evil Overlord List
A Dread Wraith Breathing down my neck...I should be able to take it out
And an angry alienated Trusted Lieutenant

Draw 3: Idiot (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#idiot) - ouch, but now that I am dumber, I'll draw again.

Oh, and THANK YOU for telling me where that blasted keep was in my DMG! I have been trying to find it for about six months. thankfully I have the Stronghold Builder's Guidebook, so I made one up on the spot when a player got one.

Anytime (I find using post it stickies with notes helps tracking down things I know I will want to refer back to in the future). I like the Stronghold Builder's Guidebooks for the magical architecture. Thanks for starting this thread .

It seems like that's where the gray is:

If the PC just undoes the effect the card draw should count but if the PC undoes drawing that card the effect should never take place and the PC should have to draw another card in it's place (Possibly the same card again:smallsmile:).

Let's run the gauntlet then:

Idiot (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#idiot):Not off to a good start. Then again, I just decided to draw 22 cards from a deck of many things, how smart could I have been?

Fates (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#fates):Always good to have.

Rogue (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#rogue):Well, this sucks, not going to waste my fates on it, though.

Jester (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#jester):Table says 10k xp. I'll take it. No additional cards for me, though.

Star (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#star):Nice to have. Depending on what I rolled for Idiot, I may repair my Intelligence.

Knight (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#knight):Huzzah! A meat shield!

Gem (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#gem):Money! My newfound stupidity is fascinated by their shininess. Give them to my knight, he can carry them.

Vizier (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#vizier):I'm going to drive jokes about my intelligence into the ground, but I will need some advice after what happened.

Moon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#moon):I got...one wish. Still one of the better things that can happen to me.

Moon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#moon):Two wishes this time.

Flames (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#flames):I don't suppose I can bribe him, can I?

Donjon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#donjon):Go go fates? Living on the edge at this point...

Key (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#key):Oh happy days! I gets a shiny. Just in case, let my fighter hold it until I am done here.

Donjon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/artifacts.htm#donjon):Sucks to be me, I guess.

What do I get out of it all?
A major hit to the head (total of 4 lost int)
2 points to an ability score
A mortal enemy who can't reach me
10,000 XP
A level 4 fighter buddy
Some advice
3 wishes
The hatred of an outsider
Imprisonment, assumed to be the outsider I somehow angered.

My vizier can tell me what to wish for for my fighter friend, give him some free stuff, maybe clue him in on my location. Then he can find a party and start an adventure to rescue his master. He can run into my newfound mortal enemy as a recurring rival. Not a bad campaign hook, actually...

6 cards!

1. Moon. With 4 wishes! Hopefully that'll save me from whatever these other cards are.
2. Throne. Um.. cool. A bit underwhelming compared to four wishes though.
3. Star. Yay.
4. Euryale -1 on all saving throws.
5. Vizier. Might help with knowing the answers to how to use my wishes best.
6. Sun. Well thats pretty alright. 50,000xp is enough to compensate for those reduced saves with increased levels!

Not at all:

If the character does not willingly draw her allotted number (or if she is somehow prevented from doing so), the cards flip out of the deck on their own.

You have a long way to go before the Deck's through with you, now get back to drawing.

I believe his PC died (First level Barbarian fighting Death).

Create Spawn (Su)
Any humanoid slain by a dread wraith becomes a wraith in 1d4 rounds. Its body remains intact and inanimate, but its spirit is torn free from its corpse and transformed. Spawn are under the command of the wraith that created them and remain enslaved until its death. They do not possess any of the abilities they had in life.

The Death might become quite powerful as a result of his new slave.

Well, my Vegas plan didn't last long. Lets see, 13 draws.
The Fates, so maybe I won't be screwed once by this deck.
The Rogue, never have I been so glad to be an introvert.
Talons, better now than later.
Euryale, which means I'm screwed in my next car wreck, but it could be worse.
Fool, so what happans when you get below 0?
Talons, which is as effective now as it was when I first got it.
Donjon, so I'm really glad I saved my Fates card.
The Void, so I'm screwed.

See, this is why I didn't want to draw. I planned to draw 13. I drew 8, of which 7 were bad, and got copped out of my final draws. Probably for the best that this thing isn't real. There's a reason I don't gamble. The Lady hates me, apparently.

The Rogue, never have I been so glad to be an introvert.

Actually, the Rogue's probably worse for introverts. The card's pretty vague, but you'll note that it doesn't affect fellow PCs. Thus, if you've got a lot of freinds, you can assume that it'll affect someone who's not your closest friend, but is a guy you like hanging out with. It won't be that bad. On the other end of the spectrum, if you've got no social connections outside your own family, the card is likely to trigger a massive intrafamily conflict.

Alternatively, you could suddenly get the government PO'd at you for no reason, which is a Very Bad Thing.

Erm, only some of the playing cards seem to have a listed thing. How precisely does one work this?

Aces, deuces, and face cards from all suits, as well as both Jokers, are used in the Deck of Many Things. On the random card generator, just uncheck everything from 3-10, and check the Red and Black Jokers (nobody knows which is the "trademarked" one, so declare it before you start drawing).

Well, lets see my luck with a full draw (not that I'm sure I'd do this in real life...)

1: Star! Good start, I choose luck. Wait, there's no luck trait in this system? Fine... Int I suppose.
2: Ruin! Good thing I'm already poor and don't own much. Sucks that I just cashed my paycheck though...
3: Moon! 1d4 wishes, for the win! Or to be more exact, 3 wishes. I could get my paycheck back! Better hurry and draw the rest of my cards so I can use these wishes
4: Star again, looks like my dexterity just got a boost (Darn sleight of hand check's too low)
5: Gems, heh, my lost paycheck is more than made up for with these
6: Sun. I just became a master something.... And I get a cool trinket with it.
7: Hermit, because knowledge is power!
8: Flames... Well, I am probably dead now. Maybe I can wish us to be friends?
9: Rogue. Aw, that hurts...
10: Ruin. Again, well, there goes all that jewelry (and my luck seems to be missing now, too)
11: Void. Well, at the very least, I guess the outsider is gonna have a hard time killing me, right?
12: Euryle, ha, like it matters right now, right?
13: Idiot, and I lost 1 Int. I think I'll draw the extra (not mjuch to lose right now anyhow)
13b: The Fates, I'm pretty sure I know what this is gonna be used on, but I'll save it till the end, just in case.
14: Comet. Well, bring it on, monsters!
15: Heirophant. Woo, a glowing sword to play with in Nowhere!
16: Alignment changed! Ack, evil/neutral now! And possibly chaotic or lawful!
17: Heirpophant again, now I have a glowing shield to go with my glowing sword!
18: Rogue... Another friend hates me now...
19: Ruin. So, I lose nothing I haven't already.
20: Void. Woosh! Off to... Here.
21: Comet again. Does that mean I get 2 levels if I defeat my next enemy?
22: Hermit. Guess I can answer that question now.

And now that I finish, I notice that no more cards are drawn after you get void. So... That loses me a The Fates... So I guess I can use my three wishes. I wish for an imaginary friend to keep me company, a book that has all the information, everywhere, written in it in English, and... For my body to be put in a very safe spot.

Yay for eternity in nowhere!

I'll do a 22-card marathon. Red joker is trademark (although I never drew any jokers so it's irrelevant).

Ace of clubs - Talons: Ahhh! My magic items! :smallfrown:
Ace of clubs - Talons: Ahhh! My... other magic items? :smallfrown:
Queen of diamonds - Moon: Yay, a wish!
Jack of diamonds - Star: +2 to a score? Hmmm...
King of clubs - Void: :smalleek: Well everything else is irrelevant, but let's go on anyway...
Ace of diamonds - Vizier: Now I know what to have for lunch tomorrow.
Ace of spades - Donjon: :smalleek: Well everything else is irrelevant - again - but let's go on anyway...
Two of clubs - Idiot: I lose 5 intelligence. Argh, my intelligence is the one thing I had!
Jack of hearts - Knight: Oooh, a fighter dude.
Ace of hearts - Fates: Finally, something really good...
Two of spades - Balance: And now I'm chaotic?
King of spades - Ruin: Ahhh! What was left of my wealth! :smallfrown:
Queen of hearts - Key: A +4 anarchic greatsword! That'll be handy in my new chaotic world. If only I knew which end to hold it by.
Ace of clubs - Talons: Ahhh! My key! :smallfrown:
Two of diamonds - Comet: Defeat the next monster to gain a level? And how would I do that?
Two of clubs - Idiot: I lose another 2 intelligence!
Queen of spades - Euryale: Slightly lower saves. As if any of them were positive to begin with.
Jack of clubs - Skull: :smalleek: This is what I'm fighting for my comet? Gain a level or be unmade?
Queen of hearts - Key: another major magic weapon. This time it's a +5 heavy mace. I don't know which end of this to hold, either.
Two of hearts - Gem: money!
Ace of diamonds - Vizier: Oh, that's which end to hold it by!
Ace of clubs - Talons: Ahhh! My other key! :smallfrown:

Idiot redraws:

Jack of diamonds - Star: +2 to an ability again? Looking at my results, I think both Stars will go on strength.
Queen of spades - Euryale: another -1 to my saves.

So, to sum up: I suddenly drop out of school (two Idiots) and become a gangster (Balance, from LN to CN, plus Knight, which is obviously one of my gang buddies). I go broke several times over (a Ruin and four Talons?!), but eventually become a successful druglord (Gem).

In addition, my soul vanishes (Void), my body vanishes (Donjon), and I get unmade entirely (Skull).

Damn.

Two out of two managed to survive the entire deck. I am so tempted to do it now with a future character.

Drawing for, lets say, a Dwarven Fighter 10
I draw five-
1) The Speaker- Switch two languages. Draw again.
1b) The Spellcrafter- Retrain Four ranks into spellcraft.
2) The Ultimate Weapon- A.K.A. Useless.
3) The Moon- Now I'm a lycanthrope.
4) The Wizard- Switch to a wizard sub. level, prestige class, or level of wizard.
5) The Vigilant- Retrain 4 ranks into spot.

Not much... Five More-
1) Trusted Companion- Redraw.
1b) Woodkin- Become an Elf or Half-Elf (SUCKS)
2) Earthkin- Become a Dwarf or Gnome (WTF, I'm serious)
3) Life and Death- Draw Again
3b) The Day Dreamer- Draw Again, no fighter has a decent wisdom :smalltongue:
3c) The Moon- Become Lycanthrope
4) The Lummox- My fighters have dex 10, redraw.
4b) The Footpad- Retrain 4 skill points to move silently.
5) Holy Light- Become Celestial or Half-Celestial

Okay, so he becomes an elf, then back to a dwarf, then becomes a lycanthrope, then gains angelic features. That would definately drive him insane.

So, okay, I draw three. Let's see what I get:

1. King of Spades (Ruin) Immediately lose all wealth and real property.

Great. I'm even more poor than I already was.

2. Jack of Spades (Rogue) One of your friends turns against you.

Duh. I'm basically a bum now. I guess I should have expected it.

3. Jack of Hearts (Knight) Gain the service of a 4th-level fighter.

Oh goody. Maybe I can use my new 4th-level fighter to fend off my backstabbing former friend. I'm taking my crappy fighter and going to look for a cardboard box to live in now, thank you so very much.

So. Four Draws, and they were decently good.

Knight, Sun, Balance, and Rogue.

I get a 5th level assistant, a decent trinket and a bukkit of EXP, a change of alignment (boo) and one of my friends turns against me :smalleek:

I'm fairly content. It could have been much worse. *Cough* Void *Cough*

Drawing 5 cards, red joker is trademark:

1) The moon! I get 1D4 wishes! 3 wishes! I wish for:

Clone, incase I die

Next two comboing in succession to allow me to redraw 1 card form deck of many wishes
Undo misfortune. A wish can undo a single recent event. The wish forces a reroll of any roll made within the last round (including your last turn). Reality reshapes itself to accommodate the new result. For example, a wish could undo an opponent’s successful save, a foe’s successful critical hit (either the attack roll or the critical roll), a friend’s failed save, and so on. The reroll, however, may be as bad as or worse than the original roll. An unwilling target gets a Will save to negate the effect, and spell resistance (if any) applies.

I'm alloting 2 given that it's a minor artifact, but really I could just use 1 as wish says "can undo a single recent event" and even though it talks about rolls that's obviously not all inclusive, especially for wish.

If I don't need the 2 wishes, I will come to that after all cards are drawn.

2) Viszer: OK

3) Jester! 10 000 XP it is (unless I am high level)

4) Gem! 50k gold

5) Skull! Uh oh dread wraith. I quickly use my 2xwish to redraw this card.

6) Throne! +6 untyped diplomacy and a castle!

Not bad.

Is there a version of the deck that's lower powered, for use in lower level games? Maybe something that would fit into E6? Just curious if there's an existing one, since it couldn't be that difficult to homebrew if there's not.

Also, don't forget you stop drawing if you hit The Void or Donjon! :smallfrown:

And yeah, the next time I have a character run into a Deck, he will so be drawing 22 cards!

I think recent means previous.

That's why you use it after the fact, and it's really only effective against dread wraith because others may be instantaneous. In retrospect should have used the first wish to wish that I can use my other wishes after imprisonment/whatnot.

Going to see if I can survive the full run of 22 cards. Red joker is trademark.

Sun- Sweet, tons of XP and a toy.
Skull- Dread Wraith, this is going to be rough.
Sun- Wow, even more XP, hopefully I gained a level.
Skull- Two of em, o crap.
Fool- I did gain 100,000 XP so 10k isn't that much, I'll do the redraw now.
-Balance-Okay, I am evil now, not my current concern.
Idiot- Well there goes my int, will take additional draw as well.
-Ruin- Well my toys are gone now.
Comet- So if I manage to beat those wraiths I gain a level.
Jester- Just for the fun of it, I will draw two more cards.
-Gem- Looks like I will have a little money to play with after losing it all.
-Ruin- And I lose it all again, worthless two draws.
Star- Ok, my intelligence is now repaired.
Moon- 1d4 wishes, I get three wishes, I think I will save two for those wraiths I think.
Rogue- Bye bye friendship, although it could be worse.
Eurayle- Saving throws, that hurt quite a bit.
Donjon- Imprisoned. I think I will use a wish to get out of this one two left.
Star- More ability score, probably intelligence.
Fates- I finally get my get out of jail free card, finally.
Ruin- Third time, must not want me having any property at all, I didn't think I had any left to lose so this isn't so bad.
Gem- I hope I can hold on to these this time.
Moon- Wishes, I got 4, so I have 6 wishes total now.
Skull- Three dread wraiths now about to pounce on me, my situation is looking grim.
Comet- So if I beat them I get two levels, this might work.
The Void- I will use the fates on this one.
Key- At the end I get a shiny toy to be able to deal with the wraiths.

End results, assuming wish can be used to undo the results of a draw.
3 Dread Wraiths Threatening me.
Defeat two to gain two levels.
I turned Evil.
I gained 90k XP
A little money in gems.
-1 Saving Throws
A close friend betrayed me.
+2 To an ability Score.
6 Wishes

Okay. Lets go for broke! 100 cards. Drawing all bonus cards available.

1. Rogue. The first card. It might be considered bad.. but I'm on a long journey here. By the end I doubt I'll have any friends, and I'll be lucky not to be in a prison or the void.

2. Euryale. Oh, and I doubt I'll have saving throws worth a damn.

3. Fool -um.. did I just draw a card? I seem to have suddenly forgotten lots and lots of stuff. Maybe I should draw another.

3a. Gem Yay. I'm sure I'll still have these gems in twenty cards time.

4. Talons Oh no! My wondrous hat of many colours that I didn't have.

5. Idiot. -5 intelligence. Me am going draw more cards.

5a. Skull Ahh! Scary ghost man. Me should hope cards give me way out.

6. Talons. Selrahc have no magic items anyway. Hohoho, silly deck.

7. Star. Ah, well at least I have regained the intelligence to properly parse a sentence.

8. Jester. 100 cards? Nothing like enough. Better grab another 2.(Probably still feeling the effects of that idiot card)

8a. Throne A seat of power. I'll need to grab some minions... And I suddenly feel articulate enough to persuade people to flock to me.

8b. Knight. Like this guy. Hes called Stephen. Me and steve are going to kill some Dread Wraiths.

9. Vizier Well... I probably would need some advice.

10. Jester. Should I trouble the vizier with this question? Nah, grab more cards!

10a. Sun. Ah hah! The universe recognizes my awesome power, and rewards me with coolness. And this magical doohickey.

10b. Gem. I'll stick them with the others in the treasure room. Theres no way anything would ever happen to these precious possesions.

11. Skull. The Dread Wraith has a brother.

12. The Fates. Phew. Playing with a safety net.

13. Donjon. Yipes! That was close. Playing without a net again. Fated away.

13a. Euryale Uh... yeah.

14. Flames. Hey what can I say. I'm so awesome that random powerful beings are just jealous.

15. The Fates. Safety net again.

16. Talons. I lose my magic doohickey.

17. Balance. Suddenly I feel my entire moral framework shifting. I feel like I should be humble and giving... This new moral framework will be the compass I guide myself by for the rest of my life.

18. Balance. Or not. I shall dedicate myself to true neutrality. That would be a good idea.

19. Rogue. Not Stephen!

20. Sun. I shall get over the loss of Stephen. I am now quite powerful, and have a new doohickey.

21. Vizier. More advice.

22. Balance. I will bend this world to my wishes! All shall kneel before me!

23. Gem. Even more gems. I have quite a pile now. Shiny shiny.

24. Ruin. Stop thief! But how did he steal my castle?

25. Talons. Yeah, I am now completely ruined.

26. Fates. Wow. I might just survive this.

27. Moon. 1 wish.

28. Key. And a kickass thing. This will help in my quest to take over the world!

29. Fates. Yes. The very universe itself kneels before me. Cower brief mortals!

30. Gem. Looks like that thief dumped some of my gems. Probably weighed down by that castle.

31. Vizier. Come vizier, let us scheme.

32. Star. My almighty intellect grows almost to where it was before!

33. Skull. And the two Dread Wraith brothers grab their friend, gonna be a lynching. I shouldn't have stood outside the annual Dread Wraith convention yelling "All Dread Wraiths are bastards!"

34. Knight. Well hes no substitute for Stephen. I'll have to torture him a bit to test his loyalty. Don't want him turning against me.

35. Vizier. Ho hum.

36. Gem. More of my gems! I think I'm closing in on that thief.

37. Euryale. I really really hope none of my numerous enemies usea save or die...

38. Fates. But if they do, I might have a fate left over.

39. Fool. Um... what was I saying?

39a. Star. I am now smarter than I was before. Things are going well.

40. Gem. The last of my gems! That castle can't be far away.

41. Key. A second kickass weapon. Of course the irony is that dual wielding is a horribly ineffective attack method. I'd give it to Happy, my new henchman, but I'm still not satisfied with his loyalty.

42. Sun. I'm pretty seriously badass now.

43. Sun. Yeah. Bring it on world!

44. Moon. 2 wishes.

45. Donjon, fated away

45a. Rogue Yeah, I knew I couldn't trust Happy.

46. Ruin. The gems! It turns out they were all fake! And they just melted! And then flew away!

47. Gem. Well, except for those ones that didn't.

48. Vizier. Yo Vizzy. Wassup?

49. Sun. How much xp do I need to turn epic?

50. Rogue... I didn't even get another minion yet.

51. Skull. I am increasingly unpopular amongst the dread wraith community. But I will not renounce my controversial views! All will kneel!

52. Moon. 1 more wish.

53. Star. Towering intellect here I am come. You peons wouldn't understand.

54. Star. Um.. I'm guessing that if I decided to draw 100! cards from a deck of many things I can't be too wise. Lets grab some of that. Its just kicking in n... OH YE GODS WHAT AM I DOING!

55. Gem. My gems flew back! I knew they loved me really.

56. Moon. 2 more wishes.

57. Void. The very void itself can't get me! Fate will protect me.

57a. Sun. For I am a living god!

58. Throne. And as a god I need a seat of power.

59. Key. I will use this weapon to achieve cosmic power. My twisted experiments will only yield positive results!

60. Ruin. Oh my god I destroyed the castle!

61. Rogue. They said I was mad!! Mad!!!! But I'll show them.

62. Sun. See the fruits of my labour! No one can stop me now. Oh, and I think I must be an artificer, given the general mad science theme.

63. Star. I just can't get that transdimensional difference engine up and running. Lets grab some more intelligence.

64. Rogue. My experiments continue to alienate my few wellwishers.

65. Sun. But they will be proven wrong. I have tapped the heart of a sun and its power fuels my incrasing brilliance.

66. Star. And of course a sun is also known as a star. My brilliant inteligence is going from strength to strength

67. Fool. Hmmm... the surge caused a realignment. My mind is a little messed up, I've forgotten some things.

67a. Balance. But it feels like I Have a whole new outlook on things. I've been a fool! I must use my powers to help people.

68. Idiot. and I feel a little bit(-2) less intelligent.

68a. Vizier. Come vizier, lets plot how to make people happy!

69. Moon. 3 wishes to help others with! Lets go make the world a better place!

70. Talons. Oh dear.

71. Fates. My great works will be saved by the gods.

72. Talons. Oh well.

73. Knight.

74. Knight. See? You act nice, and people stop avoiding you.

75. Gem. I shall give these to the poor forthwith!

76. Star. I feel like I should be more of a people person(+Cha)

77. Vizier.

78. Balance. What just came over me? Helping otherss? I should be living for myself! On the edge. Go look, ing for adventure and fun. Not helping feebs and losers.

79. Flames. Pah. You losers just can't handle me!

80. Talons. Pfft. Like that matters. I'll make some more.

81. Idiot. -5 intelligence. Uh.. that might have some negative affects on my chosen career.

81a. Vizier. I'll have to get some advice on how to deal with it.

82. Moon. 4 wishes should get that intelligence back up to snuff.

83. Balance. The new intellect brings me insight to a new way of life! I'll dedicate myself to helping authority, and an orderly society.

84. Donjon. fated away.

84a. Throne Setting up a new headquarters for the justice force I'm creating.

85. Vizier, with a vizier to help out in problems creating it.

86. Flames. Of course trying to impose law on things can bring some powerful enemies. I'm guessing this is some sort of Slann.

87. Euryale. Saving throws make me want a cloak of resistance.

88. Key.. A good offense might make up for a poor defense.

89. Jester.

89a. Comet. If I can beat all those dread wraiths I deserve a level!

89b. Fate. And this can help me escape?

90. Balance. WOAH! Setting up law and order? What was I thinking. Anarchy now!

91. Comet. Two levels from the bloody wraiths.

92. Void! Fated away

92a. Gem. Down with possesions! Except mine obviously. I'll just put these somewhere safe.

93. Rogue. My rapidly changing attitude to society has alienated one of my followers.

94. Flames. As well as a powerful being of pure law.

95. Sun. But my increasing strength will help me through the difficult times.

96. Fool

96a. Throne. And my stronghold will make the headquarters for the revolutionary cadre!

97. Ruin. Or not...

98. Idiot. -2 intelligence.

98a. Knight. Join the revolution brother!

99. Key. Right, the end is nigh, I must gird myself for battle.

100! Sun, my strength is growing as I prepare to face the wraiths, alienated lieutenants, powerful outsiders and random stuff. Lets rumble!

I think I gained more than I lost really. I'm surprised I survived.

Okay, here's what I got...

The Knight - Oh my, I got a loyal manservant. Not really that useful in the modern days, but might as well put it to work and have it earn some money. 4th level fighter would actually be quite a good boxer/wrestler, and with it's complete loyalty to me, a job as a manager would be quite profitable.

The Key - Alright, rolling for a random major magic weapon... Alright, a +3 Shortspear that sheds light as the light spell. Nothing really useful, but makes for a good ornament.

The Ruin - Well, there goes my Shortspear, laptop and all of my property. Well, at least I have my loyal manservant with me, right?

The Moon - Random rolling got me 4 wishes. I'd go for Tongues followed by Permanency to make it permanent, very useful in modern world. After that I'd use the remaining two wishes to get myself 50000 gp's worth of property, to make up for my lost property.

The Key - Again, alright, so another rolling... a +3 Greataxe that shines... well, at least it too makes for a good ornament.

Okay, inspired by other courageous people in this thread, I too try to draw 22 cards and survive it. And if I don't come out alive, please remember my sacrifice.

1. Idiot - 2 Int drain, extra draw (Okay, starts pretty badly)
1a. Rogue - Okay, a friend of mine turns on me
2. Moon - 3 wishes.
3. The Fates - My get-out-of-jail-free card
4. Sun - 50k xp, and Cloak of the Bat
5. Idiot - 4 Int drain, extra draw
5a. Eyruale - Well, my saves probably were crap before this.
6. Eyruale - Again, damnit
7. Fool - 40k exp left, and a draw
7a. Flames - In 2 days, an outsider suddenly appears
8. Rogue - Another friend lost
9. Donjon - Oh shi- quickly use of the Fates
10. Knight - A level 4 fighter, I'll name him Alfred
11. Eyruale - Okay, grand total of -3 on my saves now
12. Key - Got a +4 Flaming Burst Composite Longbow. I guess my fighter now has a weapon.
13. Idiot - 4 Int Drain for a grand total of 10, using a Wish to remove it now. Oh, and a draw
13a. The Fates - Another saving grace for me
14. Moon - One more wish, making it a total of 3 left
15. Throne - A small castle for myself, nice.
16. Comet - A level after I kill a bird with my lonbow
17. Throne - Another castle, might as well put it right next to my first one and make a bridge between them.
18. Gem - Oooh, valuables.
19. Moon - Wish count just increased to 5
20. Sun - At 90k xp now, and just got a Iridescent Ioun Stone
21. The Void - Ther goes my last Fates, but at least I survived.
22. Sun - Okies, survived with 140k xp and got Dark Blue Ioun Stone

This left me with:
5 Wishes
2 Ex-friends who are now hostile to me
An evil outsider coming at me in 2 days
-3 to all saves permanently
2 Keeps, and a manservant with a good weapon
140000 expirience points, enough to go to 17th level and after that an extra level for killing a bird.
3 fairly normal magic items.
Some shiny gems
