Silverbolt-

On the elven rogue, the right leg does seem to be problematic. From the pose it is the load-bearing leg but seems to be pointed out away from the direction the rest of the figure is headed. Everything is sliding to the front and down to the lower left corner of the room, the lower right is heading to the back corner but the thigh is kind of iffy on where its going. Not an easy distinction to make either. A quick fold or two in the pant leg [on an inseam to further define the direction its going] could help. I'd bring the whole leg to more of a profile, with the knee headed more directly towards the wall at the left.

Things I like about the rogue: #1-sword isn't held flat to the picture plane, lots of grace in the pose despite an uncooperative right leg, and quality detail on the figure [trading just a few lines that define things well for tons of 'detail' lines that do nothing is a very good thing IMO]

Line weight needs variance. This is as simple as grabbing a different thickness pen to ink the lines away from the light source. I've seen some artists sketch with a little sun or lightbulb on the paper to remind them where the light source is. Also, just blacking in the inside of the cloak will make the figure pop right off the page.

Some of the best stuff I've seen up here yet.

Imizael, Loomis is a huge resource to take advantage of. I don't have any of his books but just a few photocopies from them and they are king!

Thanks Mal, Line weight isn't something I planned on tackling, maybe I should. Normally I'd just work in pencils, but I like coloring my work, and it seems to come out better if there's inking involved. I'm not particularly fond of inking, but I see it as a necessary evil. If I can wean myself off of needing to flesh it all out in pencil, I could probably do about half of the actual details with ink, and then I'll probably enjoy the process more.

I've been using various art books to study anatomy, and proportions are something I can get a handle on so long as I'm paying attention. Still working on clothing though, the book I have for that is by Byrne Hogarth, Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery.

Thanks again!

Ah, see, inking is where its at for me. I've gotten to the point where I skimp on the pencils more and more to jump straight to the ink. Its bit me in the rump though because the better your pencils, the better the inks can be. Also, the style of inking has followed me into my acrylic painting and its a hard habit to break. Too often I make the darkest darks absolute black and render them as hard lines which really shouldn't happen in a painting.

One thing I have been able to do though is make things that I hated doing into something that I actually enjoy doing. Inking, hands, feet, perspective, drapery, buildings, landscapes, etc. I've slowly but surely tackled each one and first made it tolerable to do and then a pleasure. The fact that I sucked at each one had a lot to do with my dislike of it. Once I got better at it, I obviously didn't mind as much when I needed to draw it. Now, if I can only get so that I can do vehicles like that.... ugh..

Chubs- I like the avi but we've been trying to keep this art thread non-OotS style related. Everything else under the sun goes but there is the other thread dedicated to the OotS style stuff that Rawhide pasted a link to.

All attempts to make the floor shiny/reflective went badly, hence when it's not as realistic as I would have liked. I'll promote the calendar a bit more once it's made, so if you like this, and err...other drawings of futuristic women, you should consider picking it up.

Alarra, did you do the whole thing start-to-finish digitally or did you work off of a scan of a pencil sketch [at least for the figure as the first version you posted lacked the background entirely]? Its a little weird to see a finished figure pic suddenly sprout a background environment around her. ;)

Well, terrible to have to do artwork for a living. ;)

I'm embarassed to admit that I can't read the website you provided a link for. I didn't take Italian as a language [I did take French, German and Russian throughout high school and college and I would consider myself to be a disfunctional illiterate in all 3. We Americans tend to suck when it comes to learning other nations' languages....] so I'll only be checking to see what art on the site is yours.

Don't worry for the language problem ^_^° I know English because in life it is very important, everyone must know a bit of it, but Italian it isn't a very important language -sad to say. (woha, you take all those languages and not mine! How offensive!!! ;) I'm joking!!! ) ::)

Sample of my own work. Work in progress but about 80% along. I will say that I'm struggling with the scanner. It took a lot of the richer yellow colors out. Got it to look better by hitting it at 600dpi but still looks like crap compared to the actual paint. Scratchiness in the purple energy is there though. Used too small a brush doing a large area. >:(

Edit: changed from image to link to image.

Acrylic paints. A touch of black marker in the cracks of the floor because I was lazy at after midnight and didn't feel like getting more paint out. I'm taking classes on painting right now because I know way too little about painting technique.

Wow, Mal, that looks great (well, for a dead guy that is)! Unfortunately there's little I can comment on besides saying how well it looks, my own adventures with Acrylic (and Oil) painting have met with disaster.

I wonder if you might add even more brightnes to the highlights on the left leg, maybe even a small strip of pure white to emphasize the energy a bit more. The energy crackling around him seems to be a bit flat, perhaps a dark fade (not necessarily black) on the perimeter might add a good variance. The shading looks well formed and the color scheme fits well, I can't wait to see it finished!

Hi to all!
Here I am again with a drawing I started yesterday afternoon!

It is again for the Calendar I am making for my boyfriend.
here it is:
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/2468/terraresize5ue.th.jpg (http://img16.imageshack.us/my.php?image=terraresize5ue.jpg)
it's the Allegory of the element Earth.
from Cesare Ripa's Iconology:
"EARTH
A woman, sitting, dressed with a dress filled with many herbs and flowers.
With the right hand she hold a globe and on her head she has a a garland of flowers, fruits and fronds, and of these all it will be filled a "horn of plenty", which she holds with the other hand.
At her side there is a lion, and many others terrestrial animals".

Do you like the drawing? :)
I think I will draw another animal, in the blank space, maybe this moose I have drawn yesterday...

Stag, not a moose. Looks nice all the same though. I'll be interested to see it when inked and coloured. I think a splash of vegetation is in order or are the pencils not finished and you just haven't put the woodlands/setting in yet? I almost want to see the woman just a smidge more to the left as right now the squirrel is stealing center stage. Keep posting, I want to see how this one developes.

Gha, yep, Moose is "alce", not "cervo"! hi, sorry ^_^

tha drawing it isn't finished yet, but tomorrow (I hope) I will put in the background some woodland, yes! and on the dress of the woman more flowers and herbs.. it is a long work because of the lot of detais!

I don't know the meaning of the word smidge.. wait... no I can't find it in the dictionary.. but I think I get the meaning of you sentence!
I don't know, maybe you're right, but for this drawing I have decided to use a pyramid-construction, so there is a triangle formed by the woman(right), the lion (left) and the moose (I'm jocking! The stag) -on top!
Do you like this idea? :) I hope so!

Another great piece of work, the animals look great (even the moose ;D ). It's getting very difficult to see things I can pinpoint on. I hate being negative at all, but perhaps a bit of adjustment on the womans nose, it could probably actually use less detail. Also I think there may be a few too many lines in the Lion's mane, it seems different from the rest of the picture. The picture has a strong structure already, and your unique style shows well. I like how the picture has just enough lines to make it great, I tend to overwork some of my drawings and underwork others.

I'd toss in something like some rocks or somesuch behind the lion so it gives the stag something to be standing on otherwise it looks as though the stag is on the lion's back. Other than that, it came together nicely. The vegetation tied the figures togther well.

Malachi was right...you are very talented

I got a new pic for everyone...sort of...I actually put this on my ooc thread in SotF. This is the SotF group from the roleplaying section of GitP.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/Wukei/SotF01.jpg
I really like how Kal (the guy in front) turned out. Now before you get confused and say he's too tall: Kal is 8' in height. His "apprentice" (the girl with her hand on his shoulder) is 5'7" I think. So if I drew Kal standing up, he wouldn't have fit on the page.

I did a coloured version as well, but I'm no good at colouring; and besides, all the colours seemed to be wrong. Fine...let everyone else colour it.

Honestly, I don't like how Khassak (the lizard guy 4th over in the back) and Algar (the furry with no clothes) turned out. They turned out okay, but I wish I could have done better. I also don't like how Bakar (the Mon Calamari, 2nd to the right) turned out. But then, I just figure that I can't do aliens. Drai (the Duro, 1st on the left) turned out okay, though. He's the only one that didn't look completely human that I liked, though. R2-Z2 came out okay, but really: how hard is it to draw an R2 unit?

Silverbolt
2005-11-15, 12:50 AM
To Imizael, Sorry I didn't answer your question about the nose, the whole piece came together perfectly.

To Bingo Bob, It looks fine, you may want to refine the outside lines and sharpen the knees a bit though.

To Wukei, A very nice piece. Algar seems a bit stiff though, I'd have maybe made a small adjustment in his stance. R2-Z2 could actually use some more sharp edges, but doesn't look bad at all. The figures are all well defined and the piece is very clean (unlike most of my stuff), it looks great. The only thing that scares me is that the blind guy is the one holding a blaster (what is he, a Stormtrooper? ;-) ).

He's a sniper, and a very good one at that. Algar is actually supposed to be a bit stiff. He's still fairly new to the group. Kalentite still doesn't trust him at all (though Kal can't trust much at the moment since he's unconscious...)

And another Star Wars piece...this done for my new rpg Return of the Karistan Empire:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/Wukei/RotKE01.jpg

The female is meant to look like Kalentite. Reasoning: she is Kalentite. Awesome, ain't it, how Karistan can transform? The younger boy there with brown hair...I'm gonna stay quiet about, just in case my players actually read this thread.

Speaking of sharing...Imizael (man, when I say that, it reminds me of my gay captain of the guard [come on, like you couldn't see a gay elf coming...]) there's a little unwritten rule (actually, it is written) to save those of us with 56k modems...after 3 days, go back and modify your posts so that you are only linking to the picture instead of actually showing the picture. (I need to get onto that myself with my newest pictures up.) This saves people with 56k modems from having a horrendous uploading time if they want to post something, since all previous posts are shown below the posting box.

Thanks, hun...

And with that said: I have started DnD: A Christmas Party (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=play_ooc;action=display;num=11321827 06)...joining incentives:

I see what you mean. The red areas show a distinct blotchiness to it. I didn't realize that Jpeg was so bad for that. My stuff involves so much colour mixing that it probably doesn't show up to the same extent but I have had a problem matching saturation with the original to the scan.

Wukei: The colours all look solid, is there any shading or gradients? If not you might want to try saving it as a gif file, gif is far better for solid lines and single colours. Additionally, your black and white ones should also be much better in gif.

Some examples can be found here:
http://www.siriusweb.com/tutorials/gifvsjpg/
NOTE: It states that gif only supports 256 colours, this is not strictly true, it can be fooled into supporting 256 shades for each colour.

(P.S. Don't use paint to make gif files!)

Wukei
2005-11-17, 09:13 PM
I can't do gif...it makes it look like cross-stitch. All I have is paint. So gif is a no-no.

I can tell I havn't posted here in a while. anyway, nice haley pic, even if it is supposed to be in the comics section.
So I got bored and wrote a poem, I couldn't remember if there was someplace else to put it, but this'll work :)
He lay his sward on the grassy green
Looking towards the sun watching the geam
The river grugling below his feet
Cooling the sores that would make him weak
Grass blowing in the wind
Seeming as to send
His wandering thoughts to a close

Then on his mound he closed his eyes
His foes came upon his demise
Gripping his sword tighter still
Fingers cut and bruised on the hilt
He yelled from anger and fear
and struck out at the bear
Striking it down with a flick of a wrist

Being rushed from all sides
He drew a dagger and cried
Swung his sword into a foe
Three men struck back but all to slow
His sword flashed three more times
And all alone his swod chimes
Collapsing on the ground
He picked up his sword no more

G'Day folks!
This is my first (but hopefully not last) foray into the A&C thread. (why not an actual section of the forum as opposed to a lone thread?) So here's a concept sketch of one of the main characters in a comic I'm writing. He's basically a werewolf, albeit a particularly tough and violent one.
http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/6496/progress6oy.th.jpg (http://img510.imageshack.us/my.php?image=progress6oy.jpg)
It's shown in 3 stages: the sketch on paper, then contrasted in photoshop, then with the skin coloured in photoshop. The hair was frustrating me, so I chose to let it be for now.

Luc is my character, and Trinket is his familiar. Jenyi is Lore's character. This is for an actual "sit at the table and play" rpg. I'd just like to thank Lore, because she allowed me enough money to buy christmas presents for my family, and anniversary presents for my mom and dad (it's the 28th of this month...I was born on their 5th anniversary.)

Yeah, I find that putting that many figures into one picture really slows down the whole process. It makes me think that artists like George Perez [Avengers, Crisis on Infinite Earths] is completely nuts. When he did the relaunch on the Avengers a few years back he did a double page spread in the living room of the Avengers mansion and I think he did 33 full figures in that as well as an intricate Victorian style room complete with fireplace and chandelier. As I said, completely nuts. He also likes doing the posters that show every character that has ever been part of the Avengers or JLA all at once. I don't even want to know how long that takes him.

Actually, you know what, never mind...apparently I don't have an image in this calander and I'm really really pissed off about it.

Figures I'd turn up here sooner or later, I guess. I've been experimenting with a mixed-media technique called "use whatever's to hand at the desk, and as much of it as possible". At the moment, that means pencil, watercolour, pastel pencil, and india ink... ;D

I've really enjoyed doing this, especially this one I did today which was absolutely completely saved by the pastel pencil. I can't describe how much better it looked after I put it on, because I don't have a "before" image. ;)

A character of mine, in all her, er... regalia. Not so practical, but fun to draw... ;D

This (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/ksilisab/vsta.jpg) is the first one I did like this. I used a bit of watercolour pencil in it, as well as all the other stuff.

I've been meaning to take a look at this thread for a while. Two and a half hours ago I decided to take a quick glance and then get to bed. That plan didn't work out at all, 'cause now it's 2:30 AM and I'm still too busy to sleep because I feel the need to gush.

This is all awesome. Seriously.

A couple things that occur to me in this early hour: Malachi, that lich quite simply kicks ass (I can say that, right?).

Imizael's works are a nexus in the world for all that is beautiful--and a subtle, ethereal grace pervades every stroke and line.

I also really like the art above me; usually mixed media ends up looking somehow inharmonious, which may or may not be a word, but that one just works.

triffid, interesting piece. I think it definitely has some spots where its working well. The background is a little muddy at times though. The orange/reds of the dress are pretty vibrant. I'd try to extend that nice dark purple a little higher so that it frames the open flame on her hand which should make the flame look more intense. Better yet, make that more blue behind it. Doesn't need to be too obvious, just a touch darker so the flame looks brighter.

I must admit to using a similar technique for awhile, grabbing whatever was handy because I hadn't completed my compliment of acrylics. Swapping in india ink because I didn't have any black was fairly common for a bit. I'm now using an ultramarine blue and burnt sienna mix to get a rich black shade.

Below is a link to a piece I just recently redid. It was maybe the second acrylic painting I'd tried and the washed out colours and general lack of depth really showed. Its better now but I think I still have a ways to go. I did leave the shugenja's hair done with the india ink just because I still liked the effect.

As I remember, I didn't finish bringing the colour all the way up in the background because I didn't have any of the colours I was using for it on my palette -- and, after all, I couldn't get up. ;) Muddy is exactly what I wanted for the background, so I got it.

There's no way I'd use my acrylics for something like this. They're for canvas and palette knives and textural effects, and I'm not going to do horrible things to my watercolour brushes by using them for acrylic.

Next up is another go at the same sort of thing, only this time with a better-stocked watercolour palette, a larger brush to hand for backgrounds and so on, decent ink instead of the super-cheap stuff, and some better-quality paper with some actual texture to it -- and stretched, if I can find another little board to use.

That's showing better discipline than I've got. I use whatever is in easy reach and will do the job. I've used regular white-out instead of titanium white because I didn't feel like looking for it.

As stupid as it sounds, remembering to use the right sized brush for the area I'm working on is a tough one for me. I tend to stick with smaller brushes and defiantly use them to paint large areas. Especially dumb with very quick drying acrylics. I have only recently gotten good enough to see how the quality of the materials can affect the quality of the painting.

EDIT: Hey, Silverbolt! You going to post anything new in this thread? I've been waiting to see more since your initial offering.

I'm liking this Mal, but I can see what you mean about the colors. One thing that could help is to make the guy's skin color different than the color of the rocks behind him, right now it's blending in a bit too much.

To be quite honest, I disagree. I think the color scheme of the shugenja against the rock works quite effectively.

I tend to do that the other way around -- I forget that I do actually own brushes smaller than a 1" flat, and I paint the whole thing with a corner.

Nothing smaller than a 1" flat? Wow. I only use anything that big for the color breakdown/under painting at best and then move to smaller stuff. I finish with a 00 W-N 101 series. Talk about complete opposite ends of the spectrum.

I blame my large painting classes. Yeah, got a two-by-two metre canvas, better have a pretty big brush for that, pity there's nowhere handy to put any other brushes; flexibility is a must. I don't do anything quite that big any more, but some of it's stuck with me. ;D

Yea ego I've been lurking for a while and decided to start posting again.. along with a new scanner

lined paper- well thats what comes in notebooks, which I use in school, just not for school work..

pencils- .5 mechanical, or .7, or even a normal pencil if I find one..lol

and some of the darkness you see in the drawing is just because of my scanner or some contrast things I did with photoshop so you could actually see the drawing :)

I find mechanical pencils very bad at rending any variation in line weight compared to a standard style pencil. I also find they can't take the pressure that I tend to apply while drawing [well, when doing finished pencils anyway, sketching isn't such a big deal] I tend to use a 3 or 4H lead. Anything darker and I smudge it terribly everywhere.

You can try Elfwood (http://www.elfwood.com)

but its a lot slower than deviant art (takes around a week to get a picture up) you have to take a quiz to get an account.. and its only for sci-fi and fantasy art..

so basically it sucks, DA is the fastest art gallery I've seen..which is probably why its so big, and if you dont have the patience for that, theres not going to be many places you can host your stuff, besides imageshack..lol

The better use of colour for me came from reading a colour theory book called "Blue and Yellow don't make Green" by, eh, Michael Wilcox [I think that's his name anyway] Cleared up a lot of confusion on my part. I still have some colours that I can't seem to quite find like I'd like but I don't mix mud anymore unless I meant to and that's progress anyway. ;)

Hey Mal top notch as always!
this is to all you artists really.

I was just caught wondering, how do you guys know when to stop? I mean when do you know its finished? I ask because we've been privilaged to see many of these works in progress and they always seem to get better.

So at what point do you call an end to a picture.
I know already you guys are just going to say stuff like
"when I'm happy with it" or
"when I'm bored of it"
but is there any criteria you use?
Also have you ever not finished somthing because its unfixable or have you ever ruined a piece you were prevously happy with?
Just had to ask.

Personally, I feel there is a fairly wide window of "done but not overdone" to work within, everything that falls within that window is the "when I'm happy with it", etc. There are certain things you are looking to accomplish with most pieces [anything that isn't a mindless doodle to my mind] even if its just trying to evoke a specific mood and aren't looking for a lot of detail.

As for unfixable or ruining a piece, yes, to both. Though unfixable can be "beyond my current ability to fix" as months or years down the road you might learn to repair with new techniques, what-have-you. That also has happened to me. I might drag out a painting of an ogre that I worked on while I was at a con last summer and killed it trying to apply a technique another artist at the con was telling me about.

Anyone know why the picture previews for Dev.Art don't work sometimes? Every time I check mine only half of them show up but if you click on them it still shows the whole picture. Did I load something wrong or is that just what happens?

Some of the stuff I've been doodling over the last week or so....

Scarlet Witch from the Mighty Avengers. Blue felt marker over pencil since that's what I had lying around at work.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a108/DMalachiPenney/ScarletWitch.jpg

Based loosely off the assassin from Diablo II. India ink marker over pencil.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a108/DMalachiPenney/LeatherLady.jpg

One of my own characters from an old comic book I did. India ink marker over pencil.

This one is old but I find I still like it. Photocopy of my "finished pencils"

That's a really fine job on the dragon: what could be a more appropriate colour for a dragon guarding a lighthouse?

Here's some more recent material; decidedly SF, though.

AMAZING artwork!! I'm rather jealous of those with the ability to draw. >< I was never much of a sketch-er...just a doodlebug.

I posted this before but just had a sudden, crazy impulse to do something to it. So I did and though it still sits way below good artwork I thought I'd show it anyhow. ::)
There is *something* wrong with it but I don't know what.. Maybe is was the fact that I couldn't get to scanner to copy it so it didn't look at a tiny, slight angle :( ?

As I see it, the perspective doesn't match. The base of the goblet should be slightly round, to match the curvature of the brim. Either that, or this is one of those animated goblets, and it's bending ever so slightly forward at the stalk. ;)

Yeah, I've started to practice drawing the D&D 'iconics' so I can do up painterd samples to show the AD's at Gencon this year. You have to show you can follow their style guides to get work from them.
