View Full Version : R.I.P. TV Tropes

I hope >70% of you think I'm talking about TV Tropes leaving the interblag.

Anyway, can anyone explain to me why http://tvtropes.org is blocked at work for "Sex?" It wasn't blocked until recently, and it distrubs that of all reasons to block it, it was blocked for sex.

Reason:
The Websense category "Sex" is filtered.

They got pretty heavy with their Sex Tropes, to be honest. It probably doesn't help that they now have Porn Tropes there too.

Curse the prohibition on curse words! The best retort writes itself. *sigh* Now it's going to rattle around souring my consciousness until I can unload it on some unsuspecting fool.

To be honest, a short TV Tropes session can evolve into a missed day faster than a short Wikipedia session. If you want to keep your job this is probably good.

I'm well aware of the "just on more link" to the point of having 20+ windows open. I am a night audit at a hotel, if it wasn't for this forums and tvtropes I would play my psp for almost the whole 8 hours...

My workplace has blocked this too. So much for stealing plot hooks for my D&D campaign over lunch.

I <3/TVTropes for that reason.

WebSense is finnicky sometimes. 'Sex' makes sense at least, even if it is being a little overzealous. What I want to know is what it means when I look up a cryptography website and it says "The WebSense category 'Dayton' is filtered."

What the heck is Dayton?! Is the town or university in Ohio really that salacious?

Wikipedia NEVER had me busy for a whole day the way TV Tropes did. If Wikipedia is a Time Killer, TV Tropes is a Time Genocider.

........and since when do they have porn tropes? :smalleek:

Anyway, its been a while since I looked at that awesome site, but I do remember some rather questionable pages.

I was wondering why Websense got it for "sex"

Now what will I do to be unproductive at work? At least Tvtropes had a font and format that made it look like a business-related site that I could hide more easily.

Bear in mind that sometimes the filter has really stupid reasons for blocking things. I once had a filter block a site for "pornography". Trust me, there was none. They just want to catch it any putting something like that there provides grounds for them to question what you were doing there in the first place.

English: IT'S A TRAP!

Unfortunately, I really don't know how that filter works, so I can't add much useful info.

If your employer is spending money to block a site and you are caught using their resources and perhaps your paid time to circumvent that obstacle -- well, the phrase "bad career choice" is running through my mind.

Some filters block out Sports Illustrated's website because of the swimsuit issue links. That just means one has to go to espn.com for sports surfing.

Since quite a while ago, apparently. It's a catagory in and of itself...

... quit looking at me like that; links go to odd places in that site.

Also, SHAME on you for making the title say R.I.P. TV Tropes. You made me thank that' quabandiblaman had showed up again. Don't ever scare me like that again!

I didn't really say it was recommended, just that it could be done. Besides, like he said, without Internet, he'd just play his PSP anyways.

:smalltongue:Guess what? They do.

Didn't know, our high school didn't, which is how everyone got on MySpace, which had been blocked.

I just found out that the german google video was unblocked despite the english variant being so, and used that.

Oddly, despite its massive web blocking, my high school never blocked TV Tropes...and this college doesn't appear to have any content filtering at all. Still, it's agreed that it wastes a LOT of time...I'm reading it right now, too, actually.

TV tropes was blocked in my class due to "excessive time-wasting potential."

Wouldn't filtering on a college campus (at least in dorms) be sort of against the spirit of college? Or is it just liberal arts colleges...I have heard of schools that limit bandwidth usage, but that's understandable to keep the tubes from clogging up.

Unfortunately, I never got into hacking so I can't help you out but I do know a few people...one nearly got expelled a number of times but they could never prove anything because he was too careful and kept all his stuff on flash drives.

I briefly attended a college where this was so out of control that there's a Facebook group dedicated to keeping the latest proxies up.

Yeah.

I never needed this, though. One of the perks of being friends with a guy who worked in their Technology department. >.>

Is this the same filter that blocks GitP because it's a "Game"? :smallannoyed:
If so, I remember Phase telling me once that he was looking up a Latin poem for class… and it was blocked because, apparently, it was "occult". *eyeroll*

It's blocked here too (I just checked, we use WebSense, apparently like the OP). Oddly enough, the entire site isn't blocked... just certain pages. I had to browse through a few links before it stopped me. Then again, there seems to be little rhyme or reason behind the blockages... and the main page is blocked, so unless you have URLs for some of the subcategories, too bad.

EDIT: I click on a link, decide not to look at that page, click the Back key. That specific page was apparently blocked sometime during the minute or so I was looking at it. :smallconfused::smallmad:

That is, unless they have proxies filtered.

1. put the url in the search box on proxy.org
2. set it to ***random proxy***
3. click go
4. ???
5. profit or return to step 1

proxy, anonymouse, etc are blocked. the server room computer isn't for some reason though O.o And each curse I get from the R.I.P. TV Tropes level me up.

I could try remote desktop to my home computer but I'm not sure if they could track that.

Yeah, I was truly worried, as I had never even heard of Websense until I read this thread. You guys really need to be more clear about what you actually mean. You say "TV Tropes has left the internet" when you mean "Some obscure web-sensor has blocked it, so a few thousand kids & folks at work can't see it". Huge difference, & not a funny one. :smallannoyed:

WebSense can be pretty amusing.

Xkcd.com - not blocked, but clicking the "Random" button for a random comic yields a block for 'sex and violence' every time. hoever using the Archive to go to the page the random button tried to reahc works fine. :smallamused:

Our Digital Media teacher sometimes threatens to block GitP if we do not get back to slaving over 3dMax. We find that mildly distressing.

If that happens, manually connect to the next room's network, it's how we got around the teacher "blocking" the interwebs in HS.

That wouldn't work. Our school's server is entire - each room uses the same connection.

That, and we would get suspended for hacking the system. We do not want that happening.

They can't use the same connection. I mean, yes, you all get the same T1 (or 3) connection, but it gets split up at routers and stuff, and all that cool stuff.

I suppose it could be considered hacking, but you're really more of just re-establishing your connection settings...no unauthorized access required. I don't remember how to do it anymore...I should probably brush up on that sort of stuff.

Mr. Moon
2008-11-05, 10:48 PM
...
We have no idea what that means.

But nonetheless, our teachers would see that as hacking. Or messing with things. Or whatever. We would still get in trouble. We do not want to get suspended. We would be terribly disraught. We would much rather not be able to use GitP for the hour and forty-five minutes we're in that class.
