Scourge of Destiny:
Biography / History

Never trust a murder of crows, they flock towards death, living off the suffering of all. If a group of crows be about, a dirty deed has near been done. Be even more wary though, of a single crow. If one lands on your ship, so far from land, the dirty deed is yet to be done. The Crow brings the Rover.

Nobody knows where the Red Rover came from, or who he really is. But the signs are known. When a single silent crow dwells on your ship for three days, be worried. When the crow finally speaks, it will not caw, nor make any sound, but a single word.

"Why?"

That question asked in your mother tongue should shake you to your bones. Red Rover ain't no living pirate. He is something much worse... old ancient evil, nobody even remembers his name anymore, and he never says it. He doesn't steal gold and booty, he steals lives and souls.

By this point, he seems part of the sea itself, much like the Kraken, a great and overwhelming force. If only he were as merciful as the great sea beasts.

He doesn't kill the crew all at once, he kills them slow, one by one. And sometimes, he takes control. Always a pirate, no longer stealing ships. He has new vessels now.

Common thought is that old'Red is a ghost. Searching the seas to accomplish some long ago goal, but what that goal is, nobody knows. Maybe not even him? Perhaps thats why his crow asks "Why?" every time he comes to kill?

Or maybe, perhaps even more chilling, the crow isn't asking a question, but answering it. He might not be slaughtering good men and boys to find out his answer, but that the slaughter is his answer in itself.

The strange thing about Red Rover is that the tales of him are so consistant. See, usually he takes his time killing the crew, and one or two can manage to escape. And all those survivors, they tend to describe him the same.

A drowned man, wearing the sea-fashion of a forgotton age. His right hand cut off at the wrist now ever bleeding. Thus the name Red. And in his left hand he wields his cutlass, a small one for a privateer, but that seems to make it all the more chilling. The blade itself has at least a dozen names, but always described the same. While Red Rover seems a man apart from the world, his cutlass seems to split the world in twine with every swipe. Some think that if he wished to Rover could cut open the gates to hell itself with his sword.

He never smiles, he never blinks, he always watches. Studying and Cold, like a man who has endured too much. Like the men who survive his enslaught.

Many stories of the sea have built up around the Red Rover, and references to him in even some of the most ancient tales are abundant. When most sailors think of the Red Rover, they think of the Crow's Rhyme.

One for sadness, two for mirth;
Three for marriage, four for birth;
Five for laughing, six for crying:
Seven for sickness, eight for dying;
Nine for silver, ten for gold;
Eleven a secret that will never be told.
-The Crow's Rhyme

Usually only one Crow appears heralding the Red Rover's approach, yet other numbers have also been seen. Only an odd number of crows have ever been seen with him, and the most ever seen, during an unusual eclipse in the calm of a storm was eleven.

One for Sadness,
Three for Marriage,
Five for Laughing,
Seven for Sickness,
Nine for Silver,
Eleven for a Secret never told.

The Crow's Rhyme may be the closest thing to the true story of how the Red Rover became a ghost, or it could have been made up after his death. Many a bard has made a story based on the odd lines, usually of love and betrayal at sea. Those bards often suggest that the Red Rover long ago forgot just why he died, and just why he still exists.
