We all know that the best adventures always include at least one trip to the local tavern - be it the Prancing Pony or the Mos Eisley Cantina - and countless epic campaigns have gotten their start over a mug of ale. In this contest, you get a chance to design your own tavern wherein many a great adventure can begin.

The trick is, the tavern's name and theme have to be based off your screenname.

The rules are as follows:

1) Even though it's called the tavern context, you can actually design any place where adventurers adventurers congregate to form parties and plan adventures. You can even design an event, like a fair. The only requirements are that the location/event be open to the public (and especially adventurers, which means it has to accept a rather varied clientle), and, if it's an event, it occurs on at least 7 days every year. Note that this doesn't mean it has to be easy to get to - the tavern could very well be on another plane of existance!

1a) You can make a tavern for a fantasy setting or for a science fiction setting. Since certain stats may be required, use the D&D and d20 Modern/Future SRDs in order to determine these. Avoid using any trademarked or copyrighted properties - ie. you can't make a Star Trek specific bar, nor one for ShadowRun, Firefly, Wheel of Time, or Lord of the Rings. If at all possible, do not make a bar that is specific to one D&D setting either.

2) The name of the tavern must be based upon your screen name. If your screen name includes numbers, articles (the, a, etc.) or pucntuation (!, _), you may omit these. If your screen name consists of two words (eg. a noun described by an adjective, or a full name), you may omit one of these words (preferably the adjective in the case of the first example). You may add as many other words to the title as you wish, and you may rearrange the words (but not letters) in your screen name as well (this includes splitting compound words). See below for more detailed guidelines.

3) The theme and design of the tavern should relate in some way to your screenname, but how is up to you. If your screen name is based on an old PC, feel free to base the tavern on him or her.

4) Each entry must include the following:
Box text for the tavern - ie. what a DM would read the first time a party enters.
Physical description of the inside and outside of the bar, specifically any notable features. Maps are nice, but not required.
Additional background & history (in particular, include DCs for Knowledge (local) - and/or other appropriate Knowledges - and Gather Information checks to find out information about the tavern)
A brief description of the proprietor (or at least one major NPC the party encounters), including a brief physical description, class levels, and maybe some relevant stats. This does not need to be (and probably shouldn't be) a full NPC write up.
At least one plot hook related to the tavern in some way.
A signature item. For an actual tavern, this is simple - just come up with a speciality drink or food item. Preferably non-magical; this should at most be a sort of keepsake or momento.
5) Each new entry should have a thread started on the contests board with [TAVERN] at the start of the title.

6) When your entry is complete - and not before! - post a link to it in the entries thread (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Contests;action=display;num=11397741 51;start=0#0).

7) Follow the contest guidelines (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Contests;action=display;num=11247707 71).

8) The contest starts as soon as this thread is posted, February 12th, and entries will be locked and final on March 14th at 12:00 PM Eastern Standard Time (5:00 PM UTC/GMT).

9) Have fun and good luck!

1) Since I've already allowed you to only use only a single word from your screenname, you must use the entirety of that word. You can use a variation on it only if it only adds on new letters at the beginning or the end.

Example: If your screenname contains "Joke," Jokes, Joker, or Joked would all be fine. However, if your screenname contained "Angry," Angered would not work.

2) You may change numbers from their numeral to the written word or vice versa (three to 3). This may also be done with a phonetically spelled letter (Tee to T). This cannot be the only word you use in naming your entry, however, and you may only do this if the number or letter is a seperate word from the others in your screenname. This is an exception to #1.

Example: If you screenname includes "1138," you can change it to One-thousand One-hundred Thirty-eight (or the same number in another language). If you screenname includes Four, you can change it to 4 (or IV).

Note: If your screenname consists entirely of numbers and individual letters (THX1138, for example), you have to use the entirety of the screenname in order to meet the requirements.

3) If you change your screenname for some reason, and this change would invalidate your entry, you must change your screenname back by the end date of the contest and keep it that way until voting is complete. If I detemine that you have changed your screenname just to make it easier to enter this contest, I will disqualify your entry.

Example: Say your screen-name is "The Blue Clad One." Under the rules, you could name your entry "The Blue Rat." If you change your screen-name to "The Pink Clad One" for Valentine's Day, you must change it back to include "Blue" before the end date (and you can't change it to "The Green Clad One" for St. Patrick's Day unless voting is finished by then).

[hr]
I have recieved a few questions in regards to whether or not it's okay to use a name for your entry that is similar to or related to your screenname. This is not allowed. You must meet the requirements as explained above. For example, if your screenname is "Hairy," you can't use "Furry."

EDITS:
14 February - Added rules 1a to allow Science Fiction based entries and to clarify other issues. Modified Awards (removed Most Original and Most Likely to Be Used in a Campaign as other categories essentially covered these; added Best Fantasy and Best SciFi).

14 February - Added additional specifications in regards to questions about how to meet the screenname requirement.

2) The name of the tavern must include your full screen name
I've been trying to figure out a way of phrasing this politely, but... what the deuce?

Why is this part of the contest? I certainly don't see how I'm going to be using my name, and alot of folks have really goofy screen names that would in no way work with a tavern. I include myself in this.

I love the Tavern concept, but I honestly don't see why the above needs to be worked into it. It seems so pointless. That completely ruins it for me personally, even if I had a name that could easily be worked in.

I could do it, but it'd be a joke tavern and I really would rather not make some sci-fi/fantasy mix joint for a contest on a D&D website.

Guess I gotta wait till April now...

Oh, I actually started working on the main tavern of my current campaign whoes name now that I think about goes right along with my screen name, but could in no way use Vorpal or Tribble in it.

I'll work on it and submit it and everyone will see how it links to my screen name without actually using it, and maybe that'll suffice.

Well, partly the requirement as it appeared originally was too harsh - I had copied the text over from the Screen Name PrC contest, and somehow ended up copy/pasting the wrong version of contest rules here (the latest edit is the finalized version).

That being said, it has been stated repeatedly that the contests here will always contain strange and fairly arbitrary requirements. The screen name theme has been used before, after all.

The Demented One

Does it have to be exactly like your screen name? For example, could I use Dementia in the name, rather than Demented? Got a good idea for a Far Realms bar of some sort...

Is there a thematic limitation? Is this fantasy only, or is the mentino of Mos Eisley a permission to branch out into sci-fi as well? (Either is fine, I'm just looking for the limitations.)

Thanks!

I like it. My name offers a wealth of ideas. First, it was my favorite PC. Second, it's a derivative of a type of sugar, which provides all sorts of a different type of inspiration. I'll get started in a bit.

Hmm... I actually didn't intend it to be, but given that d20 Modern/Future operates under the OGL, I think I'm going to go ahead and allow it. I'm going to ask that we avoid modern world bars (or historic ones), but sci-fi genres are open game.

However, they must stay generic. You can't make a Star Trek or Star Wars specific bar, for example. You can make a generic one that can fit into those worlds, or a cyberpunk one (but not a ShadowRun specific bar).

In other words, work off the SRDs and avoid anything copyrighted or trademarked.

I'll modify the main rules post shortly; if I say something there that contradicts this post, the main rules post supercedes this post.

Hmm...I feel like...

It is ok if we don't really base the tavern off our screen name, but still use it in the name, right? As, in, The Sneaky Snarl, but the sneaky part isn't really important? I hope it is, I don't feel like starting over again...

Okay, after thinking a bit and checking the last Screen Name based contest, here's some more rules about how to use your screenname.

I would like to strongly encourage everyone to use their entire screen-name as well.

I understand that this is difficult, but the whole point of the contest is creativity within a strictly limited set of options.

I understand that this is difficult, but the whole point of the contest is creativity within a strictly limited set of options.
Then why not have the restrictiveness be like it must be an inn with a dark secret and there is a mystery that the patrons must figure out, or a tavern that for some reason travels around, found within a new city everyday, and one has to write why it does so and how it came to be the Traveling Tavern. something to that affect.

A gimmick like the monster contest where all the monsters had to have a common theme. Thats creative restriction. Asking us to use users names that are likely rather ridiculous is more of forcing us to take a certain path.

Until this new ruling I had a good concept lined up. Now, my screen name could be made into a tavern, but it'd be a joke tavern about sci-fi/fantasy mixes or some such and I rather not do that.

A tribble is also a "frame on which paper is dried" but its not sharp and vorpal would make no sense in conjunction.

To put it bluntly, I find ths contest concept lacking, and it looks like yet another where the rules change in the midst of me making (or even already having submit) an entry and causing me to drop out.

The rules in this case have not been changed. In fact, the only change made has been to lessen the restrictions. The original post (which as in error) would have required everyone to use their entire screenname; now, you need only use one of the words.

In the previous contest, the rules were also not changed, though I admit that I should have provided a final ruling/clarification about team entries earlier than I did.

Frankly, if your idea doesn't work with either "Tribble" or "Vorpal," then you need a new idea.

Thanks, Gorbash, for the SciFi clarification. I was thinking of something generic anyway, but I wanted to know what level of technology was available.

Oh, and The Vorpal Tribble? I look forward to seeing what you can come up with with either Vorpal or Tribble; either alone can make for some interesting concepts. ;D

Well, VT, I understand your complaint, but to tell you the truth, in my opinion it doesn't even make that much of a difference. I'm sure you could come up with something for Vorpal—I know I could! I hope you at least give it a try.

Since my SN is the checmical formula for sugar, is it acceptable to use 'Sugar' instead of 'C12H22O11'? I was going to assume that even a high-magic medieval campaign setting would not have much knowledge of molecular chemistry...

There is an entire category for Funniest entry. But you can also split "Carebear" into "care" and "bear." I'm sure you can wander into something serious from there.

EDIT: As we're approaching the half-way point of the contest, within the next two weeks I am going to try and go through all the entries posted to the entry thread and make sure they meet the requirements. If I catch something, I'll PM you. This isn't a critique or a dq or anything - in fact, I'm checking ahead of time so you can get a chance to correct your entry before the contest ends.

Hrm, I tried to post on this yesterday, guess the forum ate it.

Anyways, since your screenname is, in fact, the direct chemical formula for "sucrose" or "sugar," and, as far as I can follow the explanations of my friends inclined towards chemistry, is intended to be read in that fashion, I will make a limited allowance for you to use it for you entry.

With about 10 hours left before the deadline, please double check your entry to make sure that it meets all requirements as laid out in the Contest Guidelines thread and in the initial thread of this post.

Also, if your entry is complete and you want to enter it, make sure you have posted a link to it in the Entry Thread. Your entry will not be judged unless you make a post to the entry thread, even if it is complete.

Gorbash Kazdar

You've probably noticed that the threads didn't get locked on time today; that's because a friend of mine had his car break down and I had to go give him a hand.

In any case, I notice that some of the time stamps on entries show up after the deadline. I'm not going to make any disqualifications this time around, but by the rules, modifying an entry after the deadline - even if a mod hasn't come by and started locking the threads - will result in a DQ. This was the policy with previous contests, and will be the policy with subsequent contests. I note that there are a lot of new contestants this time around, so I'm going to be lenient, but keep this in mind for the future.

EDIT: The Vote thread will be posted later this afternoon.

Am I the only one who snuck in under the time? I misread 12:00 as 2:00 as I was rushing to post this at work. As I mentioned in that thread, I had computer issues at home, and it put a damper on my contest writing some such.

At any rate, I apologize profusely.
