It is a little known fact, but wyverns were actually created by a mad wizard. Yes, the two-legged cousins of true dragons were manufactured by a mere mortal. In the beginning, though, they were not as they are today, for in the beginning the wizard was mostly sane. As he grew in power and sank deeper and deeper into madness, the now forgotten wizard returned three times to the creature he had created and made "improvements." Some may say that this information is unimportant, that it is in the past, but I am afraid that is not true. This information is very important, for the ancestors of the wyverns, thought extinct by the few who knew of them, have reappeared.

The wyvern has three known ancestors:

The Bubble, made while the wizard was mostly sane;
The Bivell, made when the wizard decided that Bubbles needed to defend themselves;
The Wivell, made when the wizard was nearly totally mad, and perhaps the most fearsome of the ancestors.

Take heed, for your very life may depend on this knowledge.

...constructive criticism is welcome.

The first step in the evolution of the wyvern is perhaps the most innocent. Before the mysterious creator began to slip into madness, he felt called to create a living toy, something that could be a friend and protector to children when their parents were not there. His creation was the bubble.

This creature resembles a simple ball that children play with, about three feet in diameter.

Bubbles were created as toys, and as such always come in exciting colors, such as pink and light blue.
Bubbles tend to be solitary, because one bubble tended to be the same size as the child it was made for. However, some mages with large families would employ as many as five or more bubbles at a time.
Bubbles have no mouths, and cannot speak. They usually roll across the floor, but also have a tendency to bounce around. An average bubble weighs about 10 pounds.

COMBAT
Bubbles are mindless, and therefore only attack when directed or if attacked. They can be formidable opponents, though, as their bouncy hides deflect weak blows.
Skills: *Because of its bouncy nature, a bubble has a +4 racial bonus on Jump checks.

What seemed to be nothing more than a very large pink ball is in fact a living, breathing creature. It smells very slightly of sulfur.

A Bivell is a five-foot diameter ball. It has no notable mouth, but is somehow capable of not only eating, but of breathing fire. Bivells were created by a somewhat mad mage to be guards. He thought that they would be underestimated, and time has proven him correct.
Bivells are usually 5 feet in diameter and weigh about 90 pounds.

COMBAT
Bivells are skittish and quick to attack. An attacking bivell will normally charge directly at its opponents and make heavy use of its breath weapon. Some bivells have been known to explode for no apparent reason.

Breath Weapon (Su): Cone of fire 15 feet in length, once every 1d4 rounds, damage 1d6 fire, Reflex DC 14 half. The save DC is Constitution based.

Explosion (Ex): There is a 5% chance that any given bivell will have an explosive constitution. If an explosive bivell makes a successful touch attack, it will instantly explode, dealing 2d8 damage to everything in a 30 foot radius. Any explosive bivells caught in the explosion will also explode. Exploding kills the bivell.

Skills: *Because of its bouncy nature, a bivell has a +4 racial bonus on Jump checks.

This legless, ball-like lizard is slightly smaller than an ogre. It has a short tail tipped with a vicious stinger, leathery bat wings, and a sizable mouth with wicked looking teeth.

Made as an imitation of true dragons, the wivell is the final ancestor of the wyvern. Wivells have tails and stingers, but no poison, and a growth opposite the tail that rather closely resembles a head.
A wivell is about nine feet in diameter and is covered in dark brown scales. Its wingspan is about fifteen feet. A wivell weighs slightly less than a ton.
Wivells speak draconic, but usually can’t be bothered to do so.

COMBAT
Wivells are very stupid and very aggressive: they attack nearly anything, including things that are blatantly more powerful than themselves. A wivell dives from the air, biting and flailing its tail in an attempt to sting.
Breath Weapon (Su): Cone of fire 25 feet in length, once every 3d4 rounds, damage 2d6 fire, Reflex DC 16 half. The save DC is Constitution based.

So there you have it. From a simple plaything was born one of the scourges of the modern world. It is not known for sure what caused the final evolutions; some say it was nature, some say the mad wizard continued searching for a way to kill his critics until his untimely demise. Only one thing is known for sure: the past has returned, the ancestors roam the world once more.

(Again, criticism is welcome. Help a newbie stand a chance against Glyph!)
