What the...really? Damn. I really liked the guy. Wrote derivative cash-in works that were better than what he was ripping off and didn't afraid of anything.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Eddings. Your novels will always be my first love in non-anthropomorphic-animal fantasy, and the Rivan Codex will remain in my desk drawer as my primary world-building guide.

Not a groundbreaking author, but along with Salvatore he introduced me to fantasy, even though he's gone, I'm sure the adventures of Garion and Sparhawk will always be books I read once a year or so. Rest in peace.

It is truly sad news to learn that Mr Eddings has passed.

I just started reading the Dreamers series a little while ago after having re-read the Belgariad for the nth time.

As has been said here before, his books weren't literary masterpieces, but they did what they set out to do. Entertain people (and pay Eddings' mortgage).

While his literary style can be questioned he was one of the first authors I read and got me into reading. And the Codex is still the basis for how I construct my settings. For that I must honour the man and express my regard to his family and friends.

I recall that I bought the Sorceress of Darshiva and didn't like it at all but, now as I read this thread, I know it's no reason to not give him the credit he deserves. It is not required of anyone to be groundbreaking, just interesting, and I'm sure people whose first fantasy books were his appreciate them very much.

Even though I didn't really like his later books, he still has a place in my heart as the one who really introduced me to fantasy. The Belgariad was the first thing I ever read (after Narnia).

He had a gift for telling the standard story with so much wit and energy that it seemed almost new. Barely a few pages pass by in which he doesn't make me laugh or at least smile.
