He probably gets a combat bonus for being mounted on a fighting unit that he doesn't get for riding a magic item. And since he's defending against a bunch of ground troops and isn't with the flying group, the flying carpet wouldn't help him as much.

He was riding the carpet when he captured Ossomer.

I'm wondering, is it so much that he gets a combat bonus, or that he grants a slightly greater leadership bonus to the creature he's mounted on?
