Okay, I was thinking of rap names, and I was wondering if "Hex" was a taken name?

Define "taken (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hex)".

Since it's a band name, would I get into legal trouble if I used it as a stage name?

I doubt it. I don't think you can copyright lone words.
It's not the best musician name though. You want something that people can put into Google and have some chance of finding you.

I remember searching on "Hex" when trying to come up with potentially unique comic character names, not knowing there was a whole comic series by that name. It's nearly impossible to come up with a good name that isn't taken by someone - practically every short word in the English language has appeared as a character in an X-Men comic by now. :smalltongue:

This would be more a trademark issue, and you certainly can trademark lone words. It would only be an issue if someone took action against you; unlikely if you're unknown, but an issue if there's a clash and you become famous. Off the top of my head, I remember that's why Blink-182 changed their name from Blink; another band with the same name threatened legal action.

You should go by "Hexagon". Keeps your originally intended name in there and it's significantly less used.
Compare:
http://www.last.fm/music/Hexagon
2 Bands - 51 listeners total on that website (i.e. no chance legal action)
as opposed to
http://www.last.fm/music/Hex
5 Bands - Nearly 12,000 listeners (i.e. slightly higher chance of legal action)

Well, "Hexagon" isn't what I'm going for. I mean "hex" as in a curse

It can be a play on words, though! Rappers love puns.

You could do variations on it like "H3X", "Hexx", "Hexed," etc. Of course, actually recommending these makes my English teacher soul cry in a corner, but that makes it less likely for someone to blame you for ripping off their name.

Even if it's not taken by another rapper, it's a pretty common word. That will make you harder to google for. If you're trying to advertise yourself and sell your music, you might want something a little more unique.
