Our theme this month is...
PC PC's
Everyone knows of Sega, Nintendo, Xbox... but in the background was the personal computer. PC games have been around just as long and have a following all its own. Make a monument to the PC PC's; Commander Keen, Duke Nukem, Jazz Jackrabbit. May they not be forgotten!

Note: This is not limited to old PC games, but any PC game. Not console, video or equivalent games. If the game originated as a PC game though, and became a console game later on, those are fine to enter.

Remember: All artwork must be your own. Do not take, alter, or use any of the The Giant's art. Thanks.

Categories
There will be a First through Third place award for each of the following:

Best PC Avatar (anything roughly avatar size)
Best OotPC Avatar (as above, but OotS based)
Best Crossover (any games meeting the other(s). This may even be earlier versions meeting their modern ones)
Best Game Scene (anything larger than above)
Best Rookie Entry (only applicable to those who have never entered these competitions before)
And, as always, the Best Overall award.

I'll also voice my opinion on which entry is the most kick-awesome in the form of a VT's Choice Award, which may be anything that tickles my fancy or was shamelessly tailored to my tastes (I approve of shamelessessness).

Rules

1. All entries must be posted by Nov. 30th at Noon, EST.

2. Every entry must include a bolded introduction as to what category you are trying to enter in.

3. Every entry must include an itallic introduction as to what your entry is.

For example:

Elan vs. Dopefish

4. You cannot re-submit an entry previously submitted to an IA competition.

5. Do not use spoilers. It makes the judge's job that much harder, and they may do you harm.

6. Only the avatarist who created the avatar may submit it.

7. Please do not quote images. The entry/name will suffice.

Any computer games are fine. If you wanted to have Minesweeper THE CHARACTER! that'd be fine. I just used old PC game examples because that's what I'm more familiar with.

Heyas, if anyone cares, some big fans of Commander Keen made some very high quality, full-leveled additions. Now we have CK 7 and 8. They focus around him trying to finally defeat Mortimer.

The final 9th, where it is assumed the final confrontation takes place, is apparently in production.

You can't tell them from the officials, and in some ways they're even more advanced.

Probably depends on the interactivity, if you can't really interact with the "game" then it becomes more of a virtual-novel or a film.
From this reason I would call Utawarerumono (visual novel with obligatory tactical rpg elements) a game, while I'd not call Umineko no Naku Koro ni (visual/sound novel without interactivity - at least as far as I've come) a such thing.
Not really a black and white distinction for the category as a whole...

And of course it depends on if the visual novel was released to PC or to console. :smalltongue:

Since Sam&Max and day of the tentacle are two different games, I suppose it counts as a crossover. I know they used to be sold together but I don't think the characters actually met in game.

Scottish (DMA Design). Now known as Rockstar North with a little series called Grand Theft Auto to their name. But in the early nineties, Lemmings was what they were famous for. :smallbiggrin:

Okay, I'm having a bit of trouble here. I'm working on Chip, from the old-school Chip's Challenge... but I have no idea what expression to give him. Hair, face, and final adjustments are all I have left, but I can't seem to figure out what to do with his mouth.

The only official picture of him in which he has a visible mouth is the final-victory image, which has a distinctly different color scheme than the rest of the depictions.

Best OotPC is obviously Haley as Laura Croft from the Tomb Raider series (I mean, Half-Halfling used the same image he submitted for that category, and won second place with).

Best Crossover has Roy, Haley, and Belkar holding weapons from a famous team deathmatch game whose name currently escapes me. It is either Quake or Unreal Tournament.

Best Game Scene contain quips from games. The first place one I don't recognize, and the second is part of a horrible English translation of a Japanese space-opera game that became a viral video on YouTube. The third is from Portal, obviously.

Best Rookie Entry: Worms.

Really? I thought they ported it to Windows when they open-sourced and abandoned the engine years ago. Shows how little I know. However, there have been a number of games on the Mac platform with cult followings, like Glider, and Escape Velocity. Most of them were eventually ported to Windows, and I recommend checking them out, if only for "History of Gaming" sake.
