Hi, I felt like making a thread dedicated to my own little occasional goings at being artsy.

Now I don't have anything terribly recent, like I just finished it and am itching to share it with the world, but I do have a few pictures to represent me here.

I would like to start this thing of with casually presenting my latest three finished pieces all of which were made after me reading a great tutorial on proper digital painting and are the most representative pictures I have of what my style currently is like and where it is headed.

My most successful shot at a goblin in Paizo's Pathfinder RPG goblin style. (which I adore to death, they're just so cute and yet vicious looking)

This is one of many creatures which I came up with for my Etherblight comic project (which has been on hiatus way too long, just like Population: Zero). He belongs to a race of humanoid dragon spawn who were created to serve dragons in things that they themselves are simply too big, or too little in number for. But instead of slaves they are actually more treated like allies, and both Drach and Dragons benefit from each other. There are 6 kinds of dragons each of which created their own Drach (Wyrm, Wyvern, Long, Hydra, Basilisk and Serpent; this particular one being a Long).

You might know this name from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland movie or McGee's Alice, but I hope most of you primarily know it from where it originally came: Alice in Wonderland :smallbiggrin: More precisely Behind the Looking Glass, the poem called Jabberwocky.
This is my own shot at what the creature should look like, I wanted it to be really weird and absolutely not out of this world. Which I think I accomplished but altogether I'm actually not very fond of this picture. I think its something in the coloration of the greens but something just makes it look too comicy for me. Also you might notice jpeg compression artifacts on the picture when looking at it on an LCD screen. That's entirely deviantArt's fault.

Yeah so I share these with you hoping I might get some more comments and criticism (and thus motivation to go on) than what dA has to offer recently.

I've got something cooking right now too, which should be finished in the not to distant future.
Let it be said it has something to do with giant boars.

Wow, these are really, really cool. And the goblin adventurer you posted is awesome :smallbiggrin:

I also really like the Jabberwock. The pose and shading is great, and I love the wings and the texture on its skin. It looks like a living, three dimensional creature, instead of just a drawing. This one is probably my favorite.
As for your concern about it looking comicy, I think that's because of the background, not the greens. The sky looks great, but the clouds look really solid, and it looks like you have a line between the trees and the sky (the trees in the background, not the tree next to the Jabberwock). If you've got the clouds, sky, trees, Jabberwock, ect. on separate layers, you could try to lower the opacity of the clouds a bit or have them fade into the sky a bit more. You might be able to do that with the edge of the trees also.
I've only used Painter and Photoshop, so this advice might not work for whatever program your using.


How long did some of these take you? They're really awesome, and the Jabberwock one especially looked like it took a really long time to make (the texture on the skin looks like it would take forever . . . . .)

Is the tutorial you read online and free? If it is, I'd love to see it (I mostly draw with just paper and pencils, but I'm starting to try digital art). I'd also love to see more of your drawings, when you finish them. They're awesome :smallbiggrin:

Looking back at them, i think i should probably go into detail even more.

And yes my pictures are done in multiple layers. Usually i go completely crazy and make a layer for almost every color or at least every major part of the coloration. I usually end up with at least something like "skin", "hair", "cloth", "armor", "leather", "details" and then adding shading and highlights in separate layers too. It tears down the computer's performance tremendously especially because the pictures i work with are A4 pages scanned at 600 dpi (which results in easily 5000 by 6500 pixels) and this is despite my computer being a gaming pc that is custom bred for graphic performance.
Anywho, yeah desolidifying the clouds might help something. But im still convinced that the greens in the background aren't entirely uninvolved. When looked at without the darkening layer and the fog layer its actually quite an untypical shade for plants. Also the shading and highlighting turned out a bit lazy.
And I cannot shade rocky textures to save my life. :smallbiggrin:

Don't ask me how long they took me, because the answer would be very demotivating, which is actually only due to me working very inconsequently and having lazy, do-nothing periods frequently. If I would push it all together I'd say 7 or 8 hours for the ones without a background, the Jabberwock took much longer, mostly due to me changing ad adjusting colours all the time. With the picture im working on right now i've been working on it for about 6 hours so far having finished the basic colors completely and I'm expecting to work on the shading for another 3 or 4.



Thanks a lot for all these encouraging feedbacks. It can't be long until I've got the next picture finished. And I'm not running out of ideas anytime soon. (usually the pencilwork stacks quickly while the actual painting progress takes them away at snails pace, but this last one finished colouring incredibly fast, must be something with the new tablet i got for christmas)

I know what you mean with the time thing. I have one drawing that took me four days, and another that took me over a month. I probably spent about the same amount of time on each (somewhere between 8 and 15 hours, I think), but I was working on the four day one a lot more often then the month one.

Not sure what to say about it, it's an orc riding a giant boar. I like giant boars.
The design of the orc is not based on any popular fantasy setting, it's just something I came up with. Although if I'm going to make more i will make them even more stout.
Also the boar has been drawn completely from my head without any references to real boars. Only for the coloration I used some reference, otherwise i might have come up with something really weird around the mouth and nose area.

Anywho, enjoy and leave some comments and criticism.

Maybe I'm biased, but you mention in your opening post that Etherblight and Pop: Zero have been on hiatus way too long, but you make these awesome, awesome pics instead of continuing them?

Still, they are indeed really awesome, the colouration on the hog alone is way better than anything I could ever achieve :smallbiggrin:

It doesn't really need to be, in my opinion. It's good as is, and more would only distract from the gorgeous coloring.
