Our theme this month is...
Toon Oldies!
Let's remember the good old days (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheGoldenAgeOfAnimation)! What if the Order of the Stick had been created in the 1920's-1960's as cartoon characters? Would they be the crew on a steamboat? Cat and Mouse? Anvils everywhere?
Remember: All artwork must be your own. Do not take, alter, or use any of the The Giant's art. Thanks.
Categories
There will be a First through Third place award for each of the following:
Best Toon Avatar (any creation of 120x120 or smaller)
Best Toon OotSatar (as above, but OotS based)
Best Classic (any character larger than the above)
Best Classic Scene (anything/scene larger than above)
Best Rookie Entry (only applicable to those who have never entered these competitions before)
And, of course, the Best Overall award.
And as is tradition, I'll be giving out the Ruki's Choice Award for whatever entry I personally like the most from any category.
Rules
1. All entries must be posted by April 1st at Noon, EST.
2. Every entry must include a bolded introduction as to what category you are trying to enter in. Additionally, if it's your first time entering the contest, remember to add "Best Rookie Entry"
3. Every entry must include an itallic introduction as to what your entry is.
For example:
Best Toon Avatar
SteamBoat Ruki
4. You cannot re-submit an entry previously submitted to an IA competition.
5. Do not use spoilers. It makes the judge's job that much harder, and they may do you harm.
6. Only the avatarist who created the avatar may submit it.
7. Please do not quote images. The entry/name will suffice.
8. Keep entries within PG-13 or better. Adhere to forum rules.
Good luck!

Done. Still two spots open. The reserved spots are for Oblivion and Serpentine, but I'd like them to confirm if they'll want to judge, first.
Also, if any artist wants to make the trophies now would be a good time to volunteer, please!
I'll do it again if that is ok?

Entries! Make them. I require: old-school Loony Tunes, Betty Boop, Woody Woodpecker, and that Daffy Duck where he makes himself a "hand sandwich". Might be a bit after the desired timeframe, but pffft :smalltongue:

Says someone being exception himself? :smallamused:No exception. Only one person ever runs the Iron Avatarists at a time. It used to be Wukei, but then... she disappeared, I'm not sure what happened to her. Then Roland St. Jude took over for a long time, but he's a very busy guy so he approached several people about taking it. Vorpal Tribble accepted, and he was running it until he, shall we say, became unable to do so. Now it's been arranged that Haruki will be in charge of them until such a time as he chooses (or is forced) to hand over the reins to someone else.
There is no switching commanders from contest to contest, and never has been (in my time - dunno what happened pre-Wukei, but as far as I'm aware she started it).

No exception? But, what you said points to one, just one case of rein transition (and two disappearances) - so it's not a tradition exactly, is it? :smallamused:
You know, my point here is, that this change could have used a lot less behind the scenes and more openness. But, if you're ok with this it's okay, I guess.

You know, my point here is, that this change could have used a lot less behind the scenes and more openness. But, if you're ok with this it's okay, I guess. No, because it's not a matter of the running being switched around just for the Hell of it, it's a matter of long-term responsibility being handed over to someone new :smallannoyed: It's not "two disappearances", and I'm not at all sure what you're implying by it :smallconfused: The original person who ran it moved on from the forum and it was taken up by a moderator. Then another person who ran it left the forum unvoluntarily, and someone else had to be found to run it. In the long term. This is not an exception :smallannoyed:
This change happened exactly the same as it ever has. A moderator assessed the people involved for their reliability and interest, and offered it to a suitable candidate who accepted. Simple as that. There is no need for "openness", only moderator judgement.

Well, you both might have wished to mention that from the start, to avoid confusion. I'm not a telepathic, you know.

That depends on who's doing the story. In Rosa's comics, Donald is pretty much as heroic as they comes and it's often him that saves the day. And The Three Caballeros is pretty much a peak of showing him as being as nice as they come. That's why I like Rosa's comic so much, they paint Donald in all another light, not just the cliche one. Well, that and art is supreme

Also, I keep wanting to do something for this but I can never get a good idea for it. Frightful brain, it never works when I need it. :smallmad::smalltongue:
Golden Age of Animation that ended in the fifties but arguably the sixties is just a guideline. You can skip a bit later if you want. It's just much newer ones that I want to avoid. Anything pre-70's is fine, maybe some early 80's, tops. 90's and 21st century stuff is off-limits.

WHY? IM A JUDGE AND I DESERVE BRIBEING!
The reason judges get bribed is mostly because they have built up reputations outside of this one thread. Vorpal has threads upon threads of great homebrew that is deliciously fluffy and nutritiously crunchy. Serpentine has created great avatars herself and has developed her own very...serpentine style with the curves and the swirls and the arabesques and the nice LAAA-DYYY!!!
In short...you're not getting bribed because nobody really knows you that well. Build up a reputation through either art, role-play, or discussing other interests.
At the very least, give a suggestion...like Sylvester hacking up granny (a 1 level commoner) up, gaining a level in Wizard, and using some overpowered level 1 necromancy spell to raise her as a zombie to kill Tweety/Speedy.
Let's see, what are some other cartoon cats that can get on the First-Level Commoner Memetrain?

In short...you're not getting bribed because nobody really knows you that well. Build up a reputation through either art, role-play, or discussing other interests. Also, the incessant nagging. At best, you might get something just to shut you up. At worst - and more likely - people will just get annoyed and refuse to even consider doing anything as a consequence.
As a judge, you do not deserve "bribeing". It's "encouraged" tongue-in-cheekly. It's amusing to throw it out there. Constantly insisting that contestants pander to your ego is just aggravating, not amusing, especially when it definitely appears that you don't get it. Please stop it. If you have a particularly good idea that you think would be fun to have your character in, feel free to suggest it - e.g. me shutting up Snow White, because I have a long-running and specific aversion to her singing. Just belabouring the point that you want attention isn't fun, isn't interesting, and isn't inspirational.
...That should do it. Any Felix the Cat entries, yet? He's amazingly weird. I envision him in an Escher drawing...
Hrm... And anyone remember Dot? She's probably too late, though...

What the hell is wrong with you? This is a contest about a theme and Vopal only deserved the bribeing, because he managed this wohl IA things over years I think. And well If you just cry for it I say every bribing of you won't come to the top three cause you forced people to much.
The honour of beeing a judge should be enougth.

Yeah, this theme is just extremely American-centric. In half of Europe, 90% of US cartoons were banned, and even when in 1991 the ban was lifted, we saw the newest, most flashy ones. I was actually lucky to recognize that Bugs Bunny cartoon, 95% or my generation wouldn't know that.
Now, if you want me to draw cartoons from that period, I could draw Krecik, Reksio, Bolek & Lolek or Wilk & Zajec, but I guess you haven't heard of them either.
Which is a shame, really.
Even that half of Europe that had free access to US culture probably had a lot of cartoons of their own (I saw a lot of Swedish, French and Yugoslavian as a kid, these were sort-of allowed western production subtitutes) so they won't be that familiar either.

03-18-2011, 03:38 PM
Well, I'm sorry. I guess I had a research fail.
Having had access to them in Mexico, I assumed people in Europe did, too. And you don't have to look for very obscure ones, either: Disney Movies, Looney Tunes, Mickey Mouse, Tom and Jerry, these all count and they're fairly well known.
PS: Anime oldies count too. And by Oldies I mean "Astro Boy" (1963) not "Cowboy Bebop" (1998).
PPS: Actually, anything non-American probably counts too.

I got into tv series in '92 or somesuch... meaning Mila Superstar, Kickers, Samurai Pizza Cats, Sabre Riders and the first Pokemon season soon afterwards.
And i can barely remember any of that. (Don't have much of a attachment to old series.) >_>
Edit: Oh and there's also the Heidi anime series and Alfred J Kwak. :O

Well, 50% of Europe was behind Iron Curtain, you know. Further 25% was neutral for any sorts of reasons, and tended to produce their own shows, and only 25% had an access to US cartoons.
Now, US films were different matter, these were often pirated and shown in cinemas, some famous ones (like Star Wars) were shown officially, but that was cinema-only, cartoons landed in TV and had very little priority, one 20-30 minutes half action/half cartoon (if lucky) block per day.
As for PPS, good to know :smallwink:

Bugs and the other Looney Toons even had a Danish-made show that I watched.
