the 5 is how many dice, the "d6" is what type of die it is(a six sided die in this case), and the "b3" is short for "best three". So you'd be rolling five six-sided dice and taking the best three rolls.

Hah, I remember 3d6 in order from AD&D, which was extremely stupid, because you really only benefitted from having a very high score in a stat. If I remember correctly, the rulebook said something like,

Roll 3d6 in order! But you'll be pretty crappy, so here are 5 better ways to determine stats!

They all died and refused to go through the trouble of rolling up another character unless it could make it through a couple of basic encounters without getting eaten.

From what I remember, there was a mechanism for rearranging your stats once you'd rolled them if they turned out to be unsuitable for whatever character you were intending to build. Didn't help much if you managed to roll a character with less than 9 in every stat, of course!

I see the reasoning behind it, really.
I mean, a 3 should theoretically be as common as an 18 (not necessarily in PCs, mind you, but in general). But often, the players moan and complain if they have anything below 10.

Plus PCs are supposed to above the norm anyway.
