Draw your Friends! VII
Nature
Welcome to the seventh iteration of the Draw your Friends game/competition, the game/competition were you draw for a friend.
I'm one of your hosts, araveugnitsuga, you may call me Pink-Haired August.
Our other host, and founder of this game/competition is none other than The Grandmaster of Friendly Administration, Fin.
Info
The Guidelines
The game starts when we reach the 20 volunteers.
You may join by posting your desire to do so in the current thread.
If you participated in the last iteration you must repost in the running thread, posting on a thread that has undergone will not count.
You will be assigned a fellow volunteer to draw for through a PM by your respective host.
You have 7 days (168 hours from the moment a host posts that all PM's have been sent) to draw it.
You may draw in any style you wish.
The idea is to draw something related to your assigned playgrounder.
Any format is welcomed, from avatar to a giant watercolor image.
When you are finished you PM it to your assigned host.
Don't post the image here.
Extensions are permissible if you PM a host asking for it and a reasonable extended time-frame.
Themes
They are announced in the thread after the start of the competition.
They are sent again through a PM along with your assignment.
They are selected by both of your hosts, but suggestions are accepted.
They are entirely optional
The Workings
There are two phases.
On the "First Phase" you are assigned a fellow volunteer to draw.
The second phase is entirely optional.
On the "Second Phase" a host reveals all the images.
You may guess on who draw it and by whom it was drawn.
After two days such information will be revealed.
The Wishlist
You can only enter The Wishlist if you didn't participate in the previous round and the contest already has started.
If you enter the Wishlist you are automatically included on the next round.

I did consider them, but they are way too thematic, I mean, we don't want to give away the theme (or well, decide it) before everyone is on it.

Seems like it =p.
Though after six iterations of any event, interest is bound to wane unless if there's a steady influx of newcomers =p.

I believe we'll have to wait until after holy week to fill the quota. You know, with it being a holiday (at least where I live), and now being sunday (meaning the full week length would end up without a weekend since well, we already are in it).
So it is my firm believe that we'll reach the 20 before Tuesday.
Post subjected to edits if Tuesday does come before we reach 20.

And yeah, I felt it was time to go back - I had intended to redraw him but I ended up thinking that the original was quite good after all. i.e. "sour said the fox".

Try highlighting the volunteer list, and yes, it still is a joke
To be implemented:
Conscription for past participants
A draw the host round

I see what you did there.
Finding a list of Unicode characters - Free thanks to Wikipedia
Finding the right amount of non-breaking spaces - Several tries but free
Finding the color of the quote box - Like 2 seconds with Fireworks and kinda 199$ but I had Fireworks already so free
Making an elaborately complex weird color text - fu that almost no one would notice but still would be findable by those becoming increasingly paranoid like me - worth it.
For everything else, the internet is handy and IRC you can get a dsicount for Adobe CS5 with Mastercard.

At first I tried colouring the bullets generated by [LIST], but then I remembered Unicode had bullet points, U+2022. The hardest part was ironically getting the spacing to work, which I managed with the non-breaking spaces used elsewhere for triforce creation.

It's quite possible everyone don't want to be in every round, you know. Also it's going to be finals season for somme, no ? That muight someone impede the schedule of somme artists.
May I suggest than rather than waiting potentialy forever for an eventual 20; maybe it would be beter just to wait about, let's say two more days more (that's gives till the end of the week for those who would still have to express interest)* and start this round with how many players we have at this moment ?
(It'd be a slightly reduced round compared to the 20 we usualy have, if 4 more don't join, but round 1 had only 12 participants and worked fine.)

Hey i wrote to wrong but not thread.
Ohhh Ninjaman.
I got confused and thought you typed "too" wrong for a minute there. :smalltongue:
I consider this amusing because a) it's true, b)I was all ready to call him out on this additional "error" and c)I decided that revealing myself to be a pedantic idiot (which ought to be an oxymoron but isn't) was as suitable an introduction for this thread as any.
If I leap now d'ye guys reckon I'll hit the deck of the ship that is round VII or has it sailed already? 'Cause I contemplated joining every round of this since II but never got round to it.
Edited to Add: If it would be useful I can provide some info on my avatar preferences:
- my current avatar is the only one I've used thus far and is supposed to be Little My from Tove Jansson's moomin series as she might look if she were a hobgoblin
- a depiction of the current avatar that fits with the theme for the round I'm in would be nice but is by no means essential
- some things I like are: bright colours, crafts, humour and animals.

Can we allow for multiple entries? But then separate them as if there are more participants? That would make for the following options.
A. Additional difficulty in terms of guessing.
B. Increased happiness for our "assign-ee"
C. Both A and B
D. None of above.

[Nips back in] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdIsHig7Hcg&feature=related)
I pondered this myself. From the craft swaps I've seen I'd guess that this could cause some unwanted stress/guilt problems.
example:
Participant A put lots of effort into their gifts and spent loads of time crafting which they could have spent on other stuff and ended up with a lovely package but felt like they under achieved
Participant B made some really high end stuff without much effort as they're an arts student and have loads of practice
Participant C had loads of ideas but didn't know how to use them, stressed out for the whole creating period and ended up cobbling a small number of things at the last minute which looked a bit.... less than professional
Participant D made a couple of small things without much thought/ one extravegant thing without much thought and submitted, assuming this was a casual thing and that nobody was going to spend much time or effort on it so there wasn't a lot of pressure (but still produced something nice, just not full of pizazz)
Participant E... freaked out at the prospect of multiple items and flaked for unknown reasons.
Regardless of who was partnered with whom in that scenario, one or more person's pretty likely to feel they either worked too hard for what they got, didn't work hard enough for what they got or should have worked harder to measure up to somebody else's partner and that their partner should have been.
But it's definately tempting for all the reasons you mentioned and this is a lucky dip sort of thing so discrepencies are to be anticipated and aren't necessarily negatives or positives just... discrepencies. Dunno.
If it were up to a vote I'd be prepared to submit multiple items but be most comfortable with a guidline a lower and upper limit. [/neutrality]

Even though it is tempting I'd rather not in lieu of previous rounds where there were participants who did not submit, it would end up uncomfortable.
And it would add to bookeeping which certainly is already an issue.

That is possible, has happened and could be said is encouraged, however, when revealing them all what the artist submits is grouped together for clarity and hosts mental sake, it's already complicated organizing everything as it is.

I has a question on these avatars we are making. After the reveal, do the creators still have any rights over the avatars they made? Or do they now belong to the recipient of the avatar? We are making these avatars for with the purpose of giving them to other people. I can understand asking before reposting the image somewhere else (no patron of the arts would want his painter sneaking into his house to take his artwork back to hang above the mantle because he thought he did such a good job that he wanted to show it to company), but do we really have to?, as this is the internet and people can download, edit, then repost images as their own with no credit to the source.
Problem is like the painter in my sidetrack; I liked what I created, and I intend to you it in a future piece. The problem is, it's what I created specifically for my recipient, and it's intended for my recipient. It would be a dishonor to make a different image in order to save that first image for myself, as now that second work was created for the purpose of replacing the first work.
The other condition like thing, is whether or not the recipient reuses the image him or herself. Sometimes they just go into their sig. Whatever the case, I return to my initial question, are the artists still given rights over their own work or they revoked when the image is handed over to the recipient?
Or maybe I'm overthinking this like I usually do and the simple answer is just that we're not actually giving anything, so the original artist can still do whatever he/she wants with it.

By joining this 'contest' you gave permition to the person you draw for the avatar you draw including the using as avatar thing (if size fits). But As a fact he has to note you in the signatur as the artist of it if he use him.
Also we should make an Draw your friends Gallery where everypone who joined makes a post and then edit's the pictures to him. So people could easily see who draw for who and such.

Some long thinking.
I think you'd need a lawyer to answer that, in any legally meaningful way.
But I've always thought of it like I own the .svg file but I give away the .png. (except in adoption where I specially says otherwise)
But I don't repost avatars I've made "on order" for someone without their consent (as I think those are a creation of two minds).
Eleanor_Rigby
05-05-2011, 11:18 AM
My stance on image rights for the purposes of this thread is this:
The work I gift:
-I'd appreciate the recipient pointing out post-reveal how they think they might use their stuff (in this forum? outside this forum? in other online media? in other "real world" (mostly print, but also contests, job and college applications, for political or charitable causes, Und So Weiter...) applications? I'm fine with most of these but usually would like details if poss, partly out of curiosity partly out of a sense of "duty"
-In the event of my termination, I'd prefer recipients of my stuff to act as if I hadn't kerploweeéd.
The work I recieve:
-I intend to use it exclusively in these forums. If I have other ideas for them, I'll see to it that I ask permission in instances that would "bother" me, and if the artist I collaborate with vanishes for whatever reason, I'll just try to act as I suspect they'd want me to.
As to my stuff? It's ready. I'm gonna hand it in to Pinkie tonight and leave it at that, assuming he doesn't have any problems with the material (I've done checks and am 99,9% confident there's nothing offensive) I *think* my recipient will be pleasantly surprised, but I may be a terrible judge of character!

For the case given: There is no official protocol, "legally" I see it as making an avatar for someone in the request thread, if you want to use it n a bigger piece, or use it yourself (if the drawee isn't using it), it would only be polite to ask first.
As for using it in any way by the drawee, it's common board courtesy to siggy.
But again, there is no law behind it, I'm just basing it on the site guidelines and common courtesy.
As far as I understand this it's like this:
By joining this 'contest' you gave permition to the person you draw for the avatar you draw including the using as avatar thing (if size fits). But As a fact he has to note you in the signatur as the artist of it if he use him.

The point is, it's still the creator's drawing, that's the way I see it. If it were a real painting, you can't ask for it back after it's been handed to your patron. But in this case, we're working on .svg files and the image we produce is just a .png snapshot of it. We have the original work, but it's like we gave them a photo of it and said, "I made it for you."
Another way of looking at it is that you are giving them a premade avatar. You know like how Elagune makes avatars for people to use? Think of it like he made you one for free, and then later that character appears in one of his comics. Now you are just like everyone else that has an avatar of a character in Bibliography.
Another nother point is that I can wait the avatar reaches obscurity and then use it where intended.

A policy of politeness is a good policy.
I sort of imagine that if I put my own creative efforts into a project, there are certain "rights" that do go to the original creator. But it does depend on the way that you present to "gift" to the recipient. That would be difficult in situations where the intentions are not made clear, or ambiguous.
Take for example if I cook a meal for someone. The completed dish would go the person, but I retain the recipe. I could make it again for someone else who would want it, and I could tweak it to my liking.
If I specifically design a house for someone, someone else can like the design and I can make the same house for them as well if I retain the blueprints.
Sometimes, the selfish nature of humans would have it so that they want to claim ownership of what they think is theirs. Occasionally you would encounter a person who would rather you not build a house that was originally designed for them, but unless intentions were made clear that it was specifically and only for them, tough luck.
However, you can politely say that you never signed such a contract. This could be avoided if the terms were clear at the start.
TL;DR
You can be a jerk and do whatever you want to do. Or you can tell them what you're going to do with what you have and let them be the jerk if they refuse.

I don't know if slackers is the correct term, many have RL unexpected issues and not everybody has access to Stephen Covey. Crashes are not unheard of, and the demoralization they bring does take a bit to come over.

Create a background for the curren theme where we could set all the drawings into.

There have been extensions in previous rounds. I remember myself discussing with Fin one which was sent to me, and Fin proposing one sent by one of his hostees to me. So at least two extensions have occurred before.

I see an issue with backgrounded images and non-OoTSStyle entries (both of which are permitted and have actually been sent on this round) but generally sounds like a good idea.

Well it's more a picture where we can but in all the drawings after they are released. At that moment people can only send the figure and the one with time can fill them into a big szene.

If you are referring to the previously mentioned hall of fame/archive, then it already is in the works and probably will be ready by next round's end. If not, please elaborate.

I thought the origin of the test was more on the lines of "let's see if it's more difficult for people to say the color the word is written in when the word is a different color" (the Stroop something-or-other). So, to test if it takes longer to say "orange" when presented with orange or pink.
I am looking forward to the Reveal. :o

I read the pink hair comment first in my subscription email so the text colour wasn't a big issue, I automatically thought it was pink. I guffawed somewhat when I checked into the thread and saw what you did there though. :smallwink:

I'll modify the sig to credit the artist once the reveal's done. Hope this is sufficient in the meantime.

I'm glad you liked it:smallbiggrin: Yea, its Taric in a different form. I was having a little problem, since I had a lot of tests at school that week, and I had no idea what to draw that fit the theme. So I googled Taric and saw the picture, and I thought "Hey! that's green, that sort of nature-ish" so I just went with it:smalltongue:
And thanks for the avatar, QuadraticWizard. It's great:smallbiggrin:

Hooray for reveal time!
Bryn: the avatar and the banner are yours to use as an avatar or banner in these forums, they're based on the adventuring party from your RP campaign where you play as Jessica Wick. I had to do an embarassing amount of "spying" on you to make your stuff as I don't RP at all and couldn't find any artwork that you'd commented on! Hope you like them. I kind of ran out of time when it came to the banner so that's why it's so... unique. If it clears things up, the greenish person on the far right's meant to be Jess and the one with the speech bubble is meant to be Jessica. I read through the IC thread for some time before realising they were different characters.:smallbiggrin:
I think the avatar you made for Mr Saturn's very cool, maybe you should hang out in the Arts and Crafts forum more often?

Hi, all~
Just posting here to say how sorry I am for not meeting the deadline. I've got a lot of complicated stuff going on right now in many ways (which is no excuse), and spent time slacking off from other work which could have instead been slacking off while doing the work for this thread. Many apologies to Smuchmuch, my recipient; I will nevertheless try and get my avatar to you when it is finished (I refuse for forget debts, even if I make them up) even though it will probably not be as good as any of your work.
Once again, I am sorry.

Don't worry about it, at least you have piles more integrity than some people.
Also, no one managed to guess mine. Even Tsofu, who was pretty good so far. I wonder why :P
Ok, I did change my style a bit, losing all unique identifiers, trying to keep it simple and natural, I hope it didn't make the picture worse.

Who's Art Style I tried to copy:
Nobody's. I considered trying it but when I was assigned my recipient I realised trying to copy somebody else's style would be somewhat futile as I didn't know if Bryn had any favourite artists. I was kind of hoping people might guess my stuff was by AThousandWords but by the time it was submitted and guess time had come round I figured it would be painfully obvious for most people that it was done by me. So... not as much as a master(mistress?) of disguise as I'd have hoped!
Who I managed to fool:
Erm... QuadraticWizard?
and Possibly Mr Saturn
Yarp. I got caught out straight away. :smalltongue:
Props to Mr Saturn, by the by, for being nicely discreet about who it was for etc. I accidentally sent my submission PM to him instead of Pinky and he just politley pinged it back to me. Just as well I took the links route instead of the embedded image one I s'pose.
Who guessed correctly:
Ninjaman, Elder_Tsofu and Akrim.elf
Ninjaman has been harassed by me more than once so it's no surprise he guessed me, Elder_Tsofu had to do my present so presumably has seen some of my stuff, and Akrim.elf is a prolific ponytarist so we've sorta worked together before I guess (we both had more than one ponytar in a compilation banner that was posted offsite). Lovely people. Love the people.
I wonder what tipped you all off? I even copied the head sizes, line thickness and hair styles (sort of). :smallsigh:  :smallyuk: Was it even convincing? Maybe I won't do this next round.
 Mine was honestly essentially a lucky guess. I based many of my guesses on other people's guesses, to be honest wit'ya.
Aw man, no avatar for me :smallfrown:
Can I go again next round?
If you have something specific in mind feel free to PM me and I can maybe make one for you. DYF has the added interest of random kindness though so I'll understand if you don't. Also, I'm a fairly sporadic person so people requesting art from me sometimes get it super quickly and sometimes get it unreasonably late, depending on what else is going on with me so... hm. Offer's there though.
Again, nobody guessed the one I made...:smallfrown:
Dunno if this makes you feel better or not but the one you drew was one of the ones I would have been really happy to have recieved myself. It wasn't one of the ones I thought you might have done though, I find most vector based art/ vector graphic inspired kinda tricky to trace back to people sometimes, plus the main things I remember you for are your Grlumps and your Round Robin panels. Akrim.elf's submission was one of the few ones I was pretty confident about because her things have a very distinct look to 'em whereas your stuff seems to have more of a range to 'em. Not saying that as a one is better one is worse thing, merely an observation...
All in all this was terribly good fun for my part. I'll definately consider joining the next round, but don't put me down on the waiting list just yet.
It's a pun, see! HA HA I'M SO CLEVER.

Oh wow. That surprised me! I had simply assumed mine was one of the avatars not done, since I had figured no one knew anything about me. I should have looked closer at it! As I see now.. it's a woman with an ax? Jessica? ;) Very nice! I thought there was going to be someone asking me questions or something, but then there wasn't so I started to worry. Congratulations on research then!
Oh, and my favorite artist is Gustav Klimt, but I'd never expect anyone to paint me anything like that!

I'd never seen anything posted by you on the forums I usually roam here so I ended up spying on the IC and OC threads for that campaign up to and including your first finished encounter. Felt mightily creepy doing so!
The avatar is meant to be Jessica whittling things out of goblin bones (there's a skull on a stool in front of her which, I believe, would theoretically become a bowl) using her axe and her wits alone. I was worried a "literal" interpretation of it might become a little macabre so I put some twinkles in there as well as the gore. Wanted to keep it "black humour" more than "untapped horror"... I'll post a bigger pic of the avatar here later so you can see what I mean. (The file's not on this PC) My poor orange hobgoblin ears were burning at some of those threats...:smallfrown::smalltongue:
The banner's got eight members to represent your party (plus the top of the spare wolf's head) and the speech bubble's meant to show she's calling everyone of them pansies. I couldn't tell you which character's meant to be which apart from Jessica and Jess, I'll admit, as the details I picked up on didn't always mesh with the way I tend to draw stuff and I was working on two other group portraits at the time, etc. etc. so it was put together a little quicker than it probably ought to have been. The main pressie's the avatar.
Also, Klimt is cool - he's one of the priveleged few that I'm actually aware of from the realm of beloved fine artists... (seriously, I mix most painters and such up something awful)

Just wanted to pop back in to coo over Smuchsmuch's avatar for ThousandWords. It's very awesome, as far as I'm concerned - I probably would have tried to make a picture out of text for him if he'd been my assignee but I seriously doubt it would have occurred to me how to do it so fittingly, my attempts to combine text and images usually blow up in my face but yours is really cool.
In other news, here's another pic of Bryn's avatar in its original dimensions. (I'll admit to having tweaked it a little here and there before re-saving.)
