View Full Version : Necro's GIMPy art thread
06-30-2011, 02:03 PM
Not much to dump at this time, my scanner isn't exactly liking my new OS (Just switched to Ubuntu and I have a Kodak printer/scanner), so here are a couple of pictures I slapped together in GIMP with just my mouse.
This one...You see, I sometimes suffer from daylight hallucinations. Saw this once on my way back home from a friend's house. Such a fun drive home...

Dat lensflare. :smallsigh:
(Daylight halucinations, hm? Sounds messy. >_> )
06-30-2011, 07:11 PM
I thought about doing the effects in the same stained-glass kind of look, but I got lazy and decided to fiddle around with the filters.
Yeah, hallucinations are no fun. It's likely just my poor sleeping habits, overactive imagination, poor eating habits, and lack of hydration. I really aught to take better care of myself.

More art. :3
Did some portraits in GIMP.
These were definitely fun to do.
07-11-2011, 02:16 PM
I think of your style looking more like rough woodblock prints than stained glass, but whatever. It's still very enjoyable to me. Liked the Slenderman piece the most, and didn't even register the flare effect until another poster mentioned it.
07-14-2011, 05:14 PM
I'm not familiar with woodblock prints, so I suppose you're probably right. Stained glass was just the closest thing I could think of at the time of writing, that or maybe some old propaganda posters.
More art? Why not.
Steampunk-ish doodle of a friend.
With ink and color done in GIMP.
With shading, which I am definitely not doing very well at with a mouse. Way too blocky looking.
Reposting this from the previous thread.
Couple more sketches n'such coming tomorrow, I'm a bit too out of it to bother scanning anything at the moment.

By "tomorrow" I apparently meant "sometime within the next two months."
Well, here's some art:
More of this, because intact sanity is for chumps.
Now, this one I did for a friend on facebook.
I mentioned how Vash the Stampede would probably be a brony being all about love and peace and such. Then the pun "Dash the Stampede" was made and I felt like I just had to.
Then, two hours and one cramped up arm later, I finished coloring it in GIMP.
I am in desperate need of a tablet, smooth, curvy lines would be nice to do sometime.
07-22-2011, 08:23 PM
Pretty solid, but Fluttershy would have made a better Vash.
07-23-2011, 07:00 AM
Heh, I might be doing something similar for the rest of the main cast. The same person that got me to do this also suggested Twilight Starwind and I have a huge love of Outlaw Star, so.. :3

So, Necro, here's my character design, at last!
Dathan, a Harrowed.
He's moderate sized, 5'10", strong and with an angelic aura, but otherwise unnoticeable... except for the claws, tentacles, wings, and tail. Blonde hair, blue eyes, tannish skin tone.
I'm looking for a twist of human and beast, hopefully very relatable, and kind-looking, but with issues, burdens, and an eye for vengeance.
If possible, I'd like something kind of anime, as that gives it a very ragged feel, enhancing the idea of the character.

I am so very lost, there. D:
08-06-2011, 04:15 PM
Then insanity kicked in.
Yup, that's super saiyan Jesus's upper body leaving his legs behind and some pony fanart. I should get a normal sleep schedule, huh?

Couple bits of MLP fanart:
First, Black Dynamite as a pony.
Only the greatest film ever made in the history of mankind.
This one's a work in progress. Thorpony versus Destroyerpony.
Got a pony marathon going on tomorrow(well, today with some friends so the CG work might be a little delayed.
Not pony related at all, but still enjoyable in that special 'what the hell did I just look at?' kind of way:
08-10-2011, 03:22 PM
Heh, didn't notice I posted the Jesus thing twice.
Well, anyway. Have some pony Thor battling pony Destroyer:

Today I drew this:
Aaaaaand turned it into this:
Poor Twilight Sparkle's definitely failing that SAN check.
08-27-2011, 05:36 AM
Not that anyone will see this, but I made this earlier:
I then failed the first challenge the internet has ever thrown my way and still don't have dry cheeks. Confound these bronies, there fanfics drive me to tears.
08-27-2011, 11:42 AM
The background is pretty good in both of the last two pieces, but i'm having trouble parsing her face in the latest one.
08-27-2011, 10:07 PM
I'm probably going to touch up that last one a bit...definitely needs more contrast between her coat and her outline it seems. :p
Did a few little touch-ups.
Changed the color of her outline to increase coat/line contrast, added a few bits of grass to help give that bit of the image a little texture. Can't decide what to do about shading and such.
08-28-2011, 11:43 AM
Hm... i still can't quite tell what her face is about, but that might be related to the shape of the right side (with the ... funky eye?) and how the muzzle seems to bend towards that side without said side being foreshortened. (If that sentence makes any sense.) >_>
As far as shading goes, i suspect at minimum the right hindleg should be shaded, to differentiate it from the left hindleg better. Other than that... hard to tell where to put the light sources. The trees maybe? Fireflies?
08-28-2011, 11:56 AM
Ah, I think I see what you mean. The head's circular, while the direction of the snout would suggest otherwise?
08-28-2011, 01:11 PM
Yeah, pretty much.
09-02-2011, 08:32 PM
Then! Then this happened:
09-04-2011, 01:34 AM
Link seems to be broken on that one...not showing up for me anyway. I'll repost just in case:
That one got featured on EQD! Know how that makes me feel? Makes me feel like this:
09-04-2011, 09:03 AM
Is there a special reason the left front-leg has those cutout bits around them as well? :smallwink:
(I can see both hydras fine.)
09-04-2011, 10:02 AM
So the leg can hang out of the pocket. :3
That was actually a request one of the lovely gents over at the bronyism facebook page asked for. I have another version without the leg being cutout, too.
(Huh...that's odd, that first one works for me now...guess it just derped up earlier.)
The hydra is very monochromatic - the middle head with the bonnet in particular where it is doubling over itself. If the shading lines were emphasised here more heavily or a slightly darker shade was used I think it would look better.
The pony also looks like it's staring at the viewer with one eye but not the other - could be a trick of the compressed image or the fringe though.
09-06-2011, 08:47 AM
Thanks for that tip on the shading. I did kind of get a bit lazy toward the end.
Also, that pony's Derpy Hooves, being wall-eyed is sort of her thing. :3

Got some more art. This time it's only half-way pony.
See, a friend of mine has his birthday coming up real soon and I wanted to do something awesome for him and we came to him wanted some of my art on a shirt. Now, I'm kind of broke and don't exactly have the means to make a shirt with my art on it and ship it all the way to the coast, so we decided Redbubble was a good way to go. I've now got a few other shirts and such on there, too.
Well, here's some of that art:
This one was done on request by that same person. Take two of our favorite things (ponies and JSRF) and slap 'em together. Whaddya get?
Then that happened again. This one's what went on that shirt.
This one stole all my sleep last night. Can't get started on something and stop, it drives me insane.
If you like either of those and might be interested in a shirt or sticker or somesuch, they can be found here at Redbubble. (http://www.redbubble.com/people/nyarls/t-shirts/7747760-jet-set-radio-pony-scootaloo)
