Our theme this month is...
World Tour!
To remember the amazing world we live in, this month's Iron Avatarist will take a new approach at categories, with each category being used to represent a continent. In this Iron Avatarist you may submit any entries relating to:

Countries
People
Landmarks
Cultures
Traditions
etc.

Remember: All artwork must be your own. Do not take, alter, or use any of the The Giant's art. Thanks.

Categories
There will be a First through Third place award for each of the following:

Best World Avatar (Any creation of 120x120 or smaller. Please do not include "large versions". The avatar must stand alone.)
Best North America (Any depiction based on a location North America or the Caribbean)
Best South America (Any depiction based on a location in Central and South America)
Best Europe (Any depiction based on a location in Europe)
Best Africa (Any depiction based on a location in Africa)
Best Asia (Any depiction based on a location in Asia)
Best Oceania (Any depiction based on a location in Australia and the Pacific)
Best Other (Depictions of Antarctica, The North Pole, or a combination of several cultures.
Best Rookie Entry (only applicable to those who have never entered these competitions before)

And, of course, the Best Overall award.

And as an extra, I'll be giving out the Ruki's Choice Award for whatever entry I personally like the most from any category.

Rules

1. All entries must be posted by August 1st at Noon, EST.

2. Every entry must include a bolded introduction as to what category you are trying to enter in. Additionally, if it's your first time entering the contest, remember to add "Best Rookie Entry".

3. Every entry must include an itallic introduction as to what your entry is.

For example:
Best Other
Haruki's Freezing down here in Antarctica

4. All entries may be submitted ONCE and for ONE single category. Exceptions to this include: Best Rookie Entries will be submitted for both categories, and all entries are contestants for the Best Overall and Ruki's Choice awards.
4.b. As an added note, when submitting a large scene, it is possible to submit one single character from the scene as an Avatar. For example: If you submit a large comic, you may submit the character used for that comic separately.

5. You cannot re-submit an entry previously submitted to an IA competition.

6. Do not use spoilers. It makes the judge's job that much harder, and they may do you harm.

7. Only the avatarist who created the avatar may submit it.

8. Please do not quote images. The entry/name will suffice.

9. Keep entries within PG-13 or better. Adhere to forum rules.

Good luck!

PooKET, actually.

Handy tip for people reading Thai place names, or using a Thai-English dictionary/phrasebook (oh god, the number of people reading from these incorrectly...): Whenever you see an unaccompanied 'P', 'K' or 'T', mentally replace those sounds with 'B', 'G' and 'D'. The softer sounds made by those letters will be shown with a 'PH', 'KH' or 'TH'.

So you look in a phrasebook and see 'Chicken' = 'Kai', you should actually be pronouncing it 'Gai' (this is a mistake EVERYONE EVER makes ALL THE TIME argleblargleaaaaaargh :smallyuk:).
For the same reason, 'Thailand' is not actually pronounced 'Thighland'. :smalltongue:

(The 'k's in Bangkok do not follow this rule because Bangkok is not a Thai word. :smallsmile:)

I hope ye learned something. >.>

Or Wat Phra Kaew (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wat_Phra_Kaew) (Wat Pra Gaew :smalltongue:) if you want to be boring and do an actual landmark... >.>

Suggestions welcome. :smallsmile:If you're doing national icons, Uluru or the Sydney Opera House are standard choices.

edit: Hey... Yesterday on the Facebook chat, we determined that Serpentine would live in The Garden of Eden in King's Canyon. It looks like this:http://www.ayersrockresort.com.au/images/kings/kings_touring_1lg.jpg

Okay, so why don't the phrasebooks use B, G, and D? :smallconfused:

For that matter, why weren't the letters used that way when they were first converted to the Latin alphabet? :smallconfused::smallconfused:

Also, someone needs to do a Thigh-land entry. >.>

Serpentine
07-05-2011, 05:41 AM
Mmm, that seems more like a deficiency of the phrasebooks than of those using them...

Kris on a Stick
07-05-2011, 05:55 AM
Mostly because I'm forgetful and not a phonist and full of **** since I forgot the letters 'D' and 'B' are actually used. :smallsigh:
The sounds 'T' and 'P' in Thai are sort of a halfway between the English 'D' and 'T' sounds or 'B' and 'P'. Some phrasebooks/translators use 'Dt' and 'Bp' instead to represent this, though this isn't the official method, as far as I know.
So basically, D is harder sounding than T which is harder sounding than Th, and the same for whole B,P,Ph range. G still isn't used because there isn't a fullbodied 'G' sound in Thai - just the ohgodI'msoterribleatexplainingthisjusthavesomeexam plesinstead. :smallsigh:

Examples! (thanks wikipedia!)
'D' = ado
'T/Dt' = stable
'Th' = table
'B' = bash
'P/Bp' = span
'Ph' = pound
'K' = skin (as opposed to say, give)
'Kh' = kindle

Also we are now hilariously off-topic.

The harbour bridge is classic, as is the opera house. Uluru is a large rock which might be hard to get across. We have a really big reef.

I'll point out that the categories are just location based; you can draw someone in the typical dress for that area or make a landscape of there.

Or do something with a unique twist on it like Derjuin up there.

Fun fact - if you require a walking stick to rest your weight on and can't lift both hands above your head, they won't let you use the body scanner machines. I told them I could lift either hand separately, as long as I could use the cane in the other hand, and I was wearing short sleeves, so there was obviously nothing concealed in my arms, but they went ahead and sent me through the metal detector instead. No pat-down, which was a relief. I'd rather be naked scanned than patted.

Which is both crap (which one do you like? Strip search or molestation?), but saying anything more on that would go into politics. So let it just be known that i oppose this in all its forms. :smallannoyed:

I was just annoyed that they don't seem to have any provisions for non-able-bodied people. Yes, I can stand on two feet unassisted. Yes, I can raise my arms over my head. But I can't stand on two feet unassisted while raising my arms above my head, or I lose my balance. And there are many many people far more disabled than me.

All, thanks for the vote for the poor Madagascar penguins discovering Antartica. :smalltongue: I do love those hilarious penguins.

If only I could see the wonderful trophies from work. :smallfrown:

Thormag... wow. Just wow. I was in the trophy making business for a while, so I know how much of a pain it can be, but man, you really overdid it this time!

Oh, and congrats everyone! This contest proved to be harder to judge than expected.
