Re-painting D&D Minis

So I’m thinking of modding some D&D miniatures I’ve got, and I would like to re-paint them, but I’m not sure what type of paints I should use. So does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm a fan of the Games Workshop paints, with the exception of most of the metallics. Michael's has a line of acrylic metallic paints that I tend to hit up for that. Much better variety/colors, IMO.

For primer, flat white, black or grey.
