Making A Fan Vid

So I was wanting to make a fan vid, perhaps put on YouTube, but can't figure out how to do it.

I have the DVD's to take scenes from, but can't seem to actually rip any scenes from them.

I have Windows Movie Maker, but it's not much help. Anyone done this kind of thing before and have suggestions?

I just used Snapz Pro X (screen capture/screen recorder software) when I made an AMV. It's a Mac program, but there's Windows equivalents.
