I'm looking for music that can be used to enhance the atmosphere in a D&D game, whether there's a battle, a speech, or live and death moment going on. Any suggestions or general direction someone can point me to?

I firmly believe the complete LotR soundtrack is excellent for any game of D&D.:smallwink:

No question about it, but variety is nice.

Depends on what sort of game you're playing, but Godspeed You! Black Emporer does a lot of stuff that's suitably epic, but darker and moodier than symphonic music.

In general, I consider it important to have music people will not recognize. Adds more. So I personally wouldn't use the LotR soundtrack.

Now, Two (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRLdhFVzqt4) Steps (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EptSSXNHIfg) From (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASj81daun5Q&feature=related) Hell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6O6Q1OiF6LI&feature=related)...

It's damn hard to make a game epic enough to warrant their music though. I really want to make an enormous sweeping campaign deserving of that kind of soundtrack.

For a more dark setting I can totally advice you soundtracks to horror movies. even the resident evil theme from marilyn manson. Epic (Genre) Music would be appropiate most of the time.

Youtube for Epic+Battle+Music.

I'd say it's simplified to attract new players, not people with short attention spans. All the MMO players I know can play the game for hours and hours on end. That's a committed attention span if you ask me.

4th edition simplifies everything to make itself accessible. I assume you play D&D or another RPG, you have to admit that the rule books aren't exactly an easy read, especially for a complete newcomer.

I use any number of soundtracks and music pieces...

Games: FFVI and FFT OST each have some decent battle and general purpose music choices. FFT 'Night Attack' [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv7dx9cjsxA&feature=related] comes to mind as a good suspense-builder.

I once used The Black Mages' rendition of 'Dancing Mad' [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdt74rarv4g] for a major boss fight (A skeletal ten-headed hydra; I started playing the music just as I had the heap of bones in front of the players rise up and form into a complete skeleton)

Movies: I have a friend who used the 'Gettysburg' soundtrack [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NonQZWWe1y8] to great effect, and LOTR is just generally a good choice.

Music in general: I love using medieval music from The Angels of Antiquity and Dråm [http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/erik-dram/] by Erik Ask Uppmark to enhance parts of my game where each piece will fit... a piper might be playing totally at random in any town when I am running the game. Gustav Holst is another favorite composer of mine: 'Mars' is a good lead-up to a major battle, and 'Jupiter' is good music for a truly regal king.

Oh, right, one more idea: Turisas.

Hope these are to your liking!

Depends, but I think anyone who has used his music would agree that http://www.youtube.com/user/worldOfwonderify has amazing ambient music. Personally, I have used his songs plenty of times, and even have downloaded some of em.

Him aside, I think the soundtracks I have used the most in my games are; The Final Fantasy XII Ost, The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Ost, The Guild wars: Eye of the North Ost, and the Century's Child album of Nightwish.

If you don't mind vocals, stuff by Heather Alexander/Heather Dale/Mercedes Lackey is good stuff for the games. I use them to get in the mood for D&D.

Broadsword & the Beast & Songs from the Wood for more Tull.

Of course almost anything from Wagner works, too.
