The Fey Compendium

Come away, O human child!

Popular though they are, fey never got a Handbook of their own in D&D. Relevant information is scattered all over the place, and a lot of things about them remain vague. The purpose of this Compendium is to compile All Things Fey (official and homebrew) in one place. The word "All" is, of course, a wild exaggeration. Still, I hope it will be useful. Enjoy!


Introduction

"A fey is a creature with supernatural abilities and connections to nature or to some other force or place."

Official D&D publishers never explained fully what exactly fey are and how they work. For the most part, they are portrayed as elusive and tricky creatures living in the wilderness. Instead of defining them, they used them to define the part of nature they inhabit: if there are fey around, this grove must be old and magical and wondrous and possibly dangerous. Traveler, prepare to be amazed, but also beware!

But where do fey hail from? How, if at all, are they organized? Do they have an internal hierarchy of some sort, alliances and rivalries? Do they have societies, Courts or a plane of their own? Do they grow old, and do they die when their time is up? What is it, in the end, that unifies all these widely different creatures under the type of "Fey"? As a rule, the designers were silent on the matter. With a few exceptions.

Before 3.5, TSR had briefly debated the subject of Seelie and Unseelie fey, and did so with the usual black and white mentality: seelie are pretty and Good, unseelie are ugly and Evil. Later, a series of WotC web articles offered a more nuanced interpretation, and added details about the Summer and Winter Courts, complete with rivalries and intrigue. And the Eberron campaign setting included a distinct plane called Thelanis, where the Fairie Court is located and where all fey hail from.

Perhaps this scarcity of information was for the best. Because it allowed DMs, players and homebrewers to come up with their own interpretations, without the burden of a - possibly flawed or at least restricting - official unifying theory. And they did exactly that.

This Compendium extends to homebrew material, first because there's some top quality stuff here. Secondly, because many iconic fey from a bunch of different cultures never got an official version. And thirdly, because some homebrewers have dived right into the crux of the matter, and indeed explained what fey are and how they work.

In many cases, using the homebrew sections of this compendium involves much more than copying a stat block. It's the fluff that makes it shine, and the fluff is a) subjective, and b) may directly affect the crunch. I suggest you read up the flavor texts and note the relevant assumptions and houserules (on cosmology, creature types and subtypes, etc).

Do you want to include 3rd party 3.0 and 3.5 sources as well? Faeries by Bastion Press was a terrific source book even if is 3.0. The Little People: A d20 Guide to Fairies was also a decent 3.0 product. Obviously, these products need updating to 3.5, but that isn't so hard. A number of fey creatures from D&D earlier editions were updated to 3.5 in the Revised Tome of Horror , which is currently enjoying its new status in the Pathfinder games. WotC licensed a number of creatures to the Tome of Horror that they initially weren't going to update and then sometimes they did any way.

I have a folder on my hard drive that consists of nothing but fey creatures that I found on the web. It's up to 449 files. Most come from EnWord, this site and from WotC's site but a few are from other sites as well.

There is a lot of material out there.

Ah, just one minor thing. On the homebrew monster classes, you have the Wendigo listed as Slavic, when it is actually Algonquin in origin.

I didn't keep any of the contributors names on file. It's just stat blocks and the whatever came after. I standardized the stat blocks and corrected a lot of spelling mistakes. However, I have no idea who contributed to that mass of stuff. I was keeping it for personal use.

I wouldn't know where to start in putting it together as some sort of netbook. Some of the creatures are even open content from published sources and technically I'd need to put in the OGL at the end. I didn't even credit you with your stuff or Bhu or anyone because I figured it was all open content and I wasn't going to publish it. Me and my big mouth :-) I just don't want anyone to look at their creation and get upset that there is no credit line.


Actually some of it is already in pdf form because EnWorld was using that format in the beginning for their conversions. I also noticed that my collection isn't even complete because I never went back to Unosarta's Sisters of Nature thread after my mom died. I'm in the process of copying that stuff too. And editing it for proper format.

I have said this numerous times that I hate the stat block that Fax put up. I like the SRD better. So everything gets fiddled with by me and then it's not even the original stat block or text but my edited version of it.

I probably need a 12-step program for my 3.5 addiction.

I thought you might like that site. :smallbiggrin: A new catagory called Conversion to 3.5 might be useful. They are homebrews but based on original WotC creations. That's why they are conversions rather than straight homebrews.

I take the time to plug my all-time favorite 3.5 3rd party product.
The "Tome of Horrors" was the officially licensed product produced by Sword and Sorcery (an imprint of White Wolf) and it contains the 3.5 version of WotC creatures that didn't make into the monster manuals. The best thing is that "Tome of Horrors" is almost entirely open content (not the artworks for example) so you can post that material too. Since that was written, a revised for 3.5 version came out but it is only available as a pdf file. It was too big to reprint. Two subsequent books were published, namely "Tome of Horrors II" and "Tome of Horrors III" and likewise are mostly open content. The most recent incarnation is the massive Pathfinder edition of the "The Tome of Horrors" which updates all 3 of the previous versions in one book. 851 monsters in one volume!

I just posted my first attempt at homebrewing a fey creature, the leonithne. It's not yet ready for this handbook, as I still have to finish it. But, perhaps when it's done, there will be a nice spot for it.

I suppose another section you could consider would be to identify fey from 3rd-party sources like the Legends of Avednu, Monsternomicon, Tome of Horrors, etc.

Anyway, this is spectacular.

Now, I haven't touched the Fluff section yet (mainly because I'm still undecided about how to format it), but I added a Further Reading (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=12418416&postcount=9) section. It's very small for now, because it includes only fey-related d20 publications. But it has the potential to become ENORMOUS if we add books on folklore, legend and myth.

If I do go on with that, what do you think should be included? Does the Mabinogion count? Or the Faerie Queene? The Ulster and Fenian Cycle? The entire Child Ballads collection? There, I superficially grazed the traditions of only two islands off the coast of Europe, and I already have 10,000 pages of reading. The rest of the planet is still unrepresented. I might as well say "read all the mythology and folklore of the world, period". Alternatively, I might include a single link: wikipedia.org. :smalltongue:

Is it maybe better to choose books that offer a nice selection of tales from each tradition, meant for the modern reader, instead of mucking about with primary sources and entire mythologies?

I think it is, but I need your help, people: English isn't my native language, and such books (at least in English) are glaringly absent from my library. Could you come up with suggestions? Other ideas? Or should I scrap the whole thing and stick to the crunch?

I'd recommend sticking with strictly gaming material for now. Adding books on folklore, legend and mythology would be too much.

Briggs isn't, much to my annoyance. The only one i'm unsure if it's in print is the "Encyclopedea of things that never were," but then, i'm not actually sure if that ever got published over here.

Most of the rest is available for free on Kindle or Gutenburg

Wikipedia is a pretty poor resource on such things because when it was new and rubbish, it got copy pasted a lot. Now, if you change anything, it gets put back with a citation for a website that was copied from it in the first place.

1) I put the tables inside spoilers, because it was getting annoyingly difficult to navigate this page.

2) Remember when I said that I'd love to include third party sources, but I don't have any? Well, a friend was moved by the noble pursuit of this Compendium, and dropped a huge box of third party publications at my feet. For the cause, you understand. :smallbiggrin: (I'm still in the middle, and I already have 100 new creatures. I haven't added them yet, but I will once I'm finished.)

3) And so, I did get my hands on "The Little People, A d20 Guide to Fairies". It's really a great book, I have only one small complaint. It's suitable only for very low level, very low magic games, unless you start tinkering with the stats. Which is, admittedly, very easy to do (their concept for custom-made fairies is excellent), but still: Oberon and Titania themselves as CR 3 creatures? Really?

Apart from that (which, as I said, can be easily bypassed) it's fantastic. Thanks to Debihuman for the heads up!

It DOES manage to capture most of the literary sources' abilities, though only at the expense of giving them spell-likes well beyond their HD totals...

I really suspect that the failure of "The Little People..." is due to the 3.0 monster rules not being standardized until 3.5. Monster feats are haphazard at best under 3.0.

Oberon and Titania probably could scale at higher and lower level campaigns but they don't necessarily have to be powerful to rule. It could be that all the other fairies didn't want the job for example. Bastion Press' "Fairies" presents alternative versions of Titania (having her be the actual rule and Oberon as her consort for example). The nice thing about this book is that it too is almost entirely open content (except for the cover, artwork and graphic elements) so I can post her stats here from the book. Obviously some information doesn't make sense without access to the book, but you can see how very different she is from her stats in "Little People."

Now I did make sure to look before posting but if I missed a race tell me. I have a player that wants to play a medium sized fey/fairy with wings. She was very particular on this but from what I have seen both from my own research and on here it would seem only small to tiny fey/fairies have wings.

Also preferably, as we are starting between level 1 to 3, it would be best for the race not to have a high level adjustment.
