OK, this isn't homebrew per se, but I was thinking about how common rogue, monk and fighter fixes were. If they were to be compiled into a single thread then it could be very helpful for those searching for fixes instead of making their own, or for those that have done their own and would like to compare and revise.
In any case, just post with your links to your fixes and I will add them here. If you have homebrewed classes that are similar enough to these classes and you would like to add them by all means I will. There might even be a top ten competition some time!

Edit: If you are providing links, please designate if your homebrew is a Fix or an Alternative. Thank you!

I've got a few more fixes to the categories on this list: a rogue (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=12291628#post12291628) and a warmage (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=219088). Also, a ranger (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=234888) and paladin, the latter of which tends to crop up enough that it deserves its own section, probably. I know T. G. Oskar did a lot of work on the subject... (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=193554)

I'm working (slowly) on a power-level fix for the Soulborn (and fluff "fixes" for all three classes in Magic of Incarnum, but that's more an issue specific to my campaign). Whether it will actually be finished is deeply in doubt, but I'll bookmark this thread just in case.

But who on earth thinks the Rogue needs to be fixed? Okay, I've heard that there's a class called Factotum which is pretty much strictly better as a skill specialist, but there's no guarantee your DM will allow any class from a sourcebook. Plus the last I checked Rogues are the ONLY class in the entire game allowed to disarm magic traps; that's more than reason enough for them to be a viable class no matter how weak everything else they do might be. And Sneak Attack isn't anything to sneeze at anyway. Rogue is in the core and not spectacularly weak, I'd think that's good enough that it doesn't need fixing.

But who on earth thinks the Rogue needs to be fixed?

Almost anyone who's played one.

The Factotum is what the Rogue should be, full stop. It does a bit of everything fairly well, rather than failing at anything that isn't stabbing something in the back of the neck, unless they burn huge amounts of resources into making UMD amazing, in which case you're just a Wizard with a gambling problem and some pointy sticks.

The Rogue is not the only class allowed to to disarm magic traps, unless your game is Core only. There are some twenty other ways to get Trapfinding (spells, non-Core classes, ACFs for Core classes), and most of them treat it as one of the most minor abilities in the game. Rangers trade away Track for Trapfinding, for example.

And Sneak Attack isn't anything to sneeze at anyway. Rogue is in the core and not spectacularly weak, I'd think that's good enough that it doesn't need fixing.

And if you fight a construct, or an ooze, or an undead, or a plant, or anything with fortification? Virtually half of all printed monsters essentially say "nope" to Sneak Attack, which is a flawed concept from the ground up. A properly optimized Rogue can instagib anything it reliably land attacks on, so in turn every creature has the ability to become outright immune to Sneak Attack.

But you're right about one thing. The Rogue isn't spectacularly weak. With enough effort you can make a decent Rogue. But it's poorly designed, starting with its most basic abilities and going all the way to Rogue 20 being the worst class level in the entire game.

It's not exactly commonly corrected, but it's a class fix:

Marshal (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=213891) (from Miniatures Handbook), by me. It's a fix, I think, since I tried to keep the original flavor of "buffin' allies" with "tank" thrown in.

But who on earth thinks the Rogue needs to be fixed?

*hand up* Me. Right here. Hi.

Rogue needs to be fixed because it is generally only usable (and the fluff supports this) as a two-weapon fighter or an archer, which are both incredibly useless fighting styles unless you invest a heavy amount of feats into them (for TWF you need Weapon Finesse, Two-Weapon Fighting, Improved Two-Weapon Fighting, and Greater Two-Weapon Fighting, and for archery you need Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot, Rapid Shot, Manyshot, Greater Manyshot, and possibly Improved Precise Shot). The rogue does not have a single bonus feat before 10th level to mitigate this, and even then, if you take a bonus feat you lose a chance to become more "rogue-ish".

The rogue also has a shocking 26 skills as class skills, but only 8+Int skill points per level. The rogue has no class feature benefits from a high Intelligence score, so putting Int in only to benefit from skill points is a waste of a score (especially considering there really aren't that many rogue skills that are Int-based to begin with).

The rogue has the lowest hit points of any martial character in the game. If the rogue is in melee so that it can flank so that it can get off its "amazing" Sneak Attack, it gets knocked out by one or two hits from a CR appropriate monster, since the number of attacks they get per round, as well as their Strength score, scale pretty damn quadrilaterally.

The rogue also has the worst saving throws in the game, and falls prey to poison, stunning, illusions, enchantments, forced transformations, petrification, and death. All the time. Especially since Wisdom is the only score other than Strength that a rogue can safely dump.

Not only does the rogue have terrible hit points and terrible saving throws, it also has a terrible defense. No medium or heavy armor, no shields. No defensive class features other than defensive roll. The rogue is good at one thing in combat, and that's dying. Sure, you can use wands to improve your chances, if you have the money and the access, but neither of those is a guarantee like class features are.

This is a good idea; I'm assuming we are allowed to link our own fixes?

This is my Fighter Fix (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=228850) - with plenty of feats and other a few other goodies. (no more dead levels!)

This is my Rogue Fix (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=234132) - which borrows from the best parts of the ninja and swashbuckler.

This is my Ranger Fix (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=236178) - which combines the ranger and scout.

My monk fix, regretably, needs more work, but the link is still in my extended sig if anyone wants to browse it for inspiration.

Edit: How do we request that something get's stickied? What are the rules for that kind of stuff?
Edit2: Sorry, whats the exact difference between a fix and an alternative?

I redid some (most) of the base classes.

Barbarian (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=168774): A Barbarian re-tool, involves a rage pool filled upon taking damage.

Planar Mage (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=10461008): A Wizard re-tool, only gets 7th level spells, has spell list and flavor based on aligned plane.

Priest (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=189564): A Cleric re-tool, only gets 7th level spells, spell list entirely based on domains.

Psionicist (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=211806): A Psion re-tool, only gets 7th level powers, class features based on discipline chosen.

Druid (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=11868155#post11868155): A Druid re-tool, based on aforementioned Priest class. Is very similar to regular Druid, only Wildshaping is slightly changed to be more like a very supernatural Shapeshifting (ACF from PHBII) class feature.

Bard (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=11905257): A Bard re-tool, gaining martial maneuvers instead of magic, and bardic music that isn't just a better version of Inspire Courage over and over and over again. Gains Rogue-like special abilities at higher levels.

Psychic Warrior (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=11940431): A Psychic Warrior retool. Gains only 5th level powers, and has specific class features based on a path that is chosen.

And the PF soulknife is just as crappy and halfassed as the rest of pathfinder. Its Psychic strike is still unusable, the class is still psionic in name only, and the one big change, the blade skills, are mostly comprised of things the soulknife already got before (bad), and things that are worth less than a feat. There are a couple of exceptions (like Fluid Form), but the PF Soulknife is firmly a tier 5 class in need of fixing.

Never saw this response: Main thing that PF fixes in the case of the soulknife - full BAB, more fluid mind blade, and the customizability. The class is now okay. If it is still tier 5, it is the upper realms (it is better than the archtype - fighter), I would put it in tier 4: Capable of doing one thing quite well, but often useless when encounters require other areas of expertise, or capable of doing many things to a reasonable degree of competance without truly shining.

Glad to see we're finally getting around to one of these revised-class-indexes. We're in desperate need of one. If I might be so bold as to offer a suggestion? Not something mandatory, but maybe as a sort of courtesy, submissions could mention what makes their redesign unique in like, a sentence or a couple of words? Just something to get index-users on the right track.

i think the problem here is that classes like paladin, end up having 10-20 re-writes with similar abilities

Maybe just let people submit a few key notes that describe how their class is different or what's important about it. We don't want to put all the burden on the OP to figure out how to describe everyone else's class. Maybe even send it via PM so we don't clog up the thread.

Or we could try rating the fixes on various characteristics such as originality, simplicity, overall effectiveness, etc...I mean if you don't think there's enough contraversy already.

Come to think of it this thread has already gone beyond the original scope i intended. I'm not really keen on doing the same thing for prestige classes due to the sheer numbers there are, but im happy to add a line or two description for those that want their fixes to have such. PMs would be fine.

If there is anything I dont have up that youd like to have posted please have a look at the compendium threads and see if you can add them there, seeing as those threads seem to be a better option for everybody. This thread has been listed on the table of contents of that thread though, so you may or may not want to double what is posted here already.

though I can say that i have no idea why a certian poster felt the need to post PrC in a base class thread. compltely odd in my reasoning.

not only that but your is much better than the other one much more simplistic and easy to use. maybe im wrong but I thik simple and easier to use is much better.

You don't NEED to add every single link people provide; if this is intended to just be fixes for the base classes, then just put those at the start and encourage other posters to stay on topic.

At this point there's so much homebrew floating around, I have no doubt you could easily find a dozen fixes for ANY class with a little effort.

Though I feel a bit ashamed that my Youxia was the one mentioned, since it's not even playable right now. I mean, yeah, I got a few styles made, but they're not polished enough and not enough of them exist in the first place to really let the class be played.

I'd like to clarify though that it's not a Monk fix per se. I made it as an alternative to the Monk and my Prize Fighter when you want to play an Unarmed Fighter who doesn't rely on Tome of Battle to be relevant in the party.

But that's just another thing I'll need to get back on when I'm done with Ouroboros and when the PGBC doesn't need my attention. That's my flaw though, I put down these great ideas that some folks like as well but they never see total completion most of the time. :smallsigh:

This thread is a wonderful idea and I give it a supportive bump!

Yesterday i brewed this Paladin (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=249858) rebuild, that used minimal homebrew, to the point im not sure it actually is homebrew, but is instead what you get when a DM is extremely generous with you.

Dunno if it's worth much, but I made a Monk alternative/fix (depending on setting I guess...) here: The Open Palm (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=10693197&postcount=1)
