So this show is pretty great.

To summarise:

It's about this guy:

http://i.minus.com/ibt3f3oj7RUTFX.gif

And his sister:

http://i.imgur.com/ZPTGz.gif

Who spend their summer with their great uncle Stan finding out about the spooky (or possibly just silly) stuff that goes on in this place:

Can we have one of them thread thingies about it?

Huh, apparently not.

Well ok, I'll just bump this with a four minute preview of the second episode and we can go back to not talking about it. (http://tv.disney.go.com/disneychannel/gravityfalls/videos/?video=1_7abwrhh5)

I like it; it makes me feel nostalgic for all the old 90's(?) shows that were about kids and the random episodic supernatural. Also the idea of a story arc really piques my interest.

Wow that does seem to evoke Quintel via Flapjack, I'll have to check this out. What I'm really wondering is if they're able to use the setting well enough while not being crushed by it.

It's not a bad show (and the intro is fantastic) and it has some pretty funny ideas but there's a weird gap between the character design and voices and personalities.
Mostly Pipper and Mabel, who sound a lot older than they look.

Dipper does sound very old for 12. But I think that works well with his role as the straight guy.

All I can say is that any "kid's" cartoon that has a reference to the assassination of Lincoln in the form of a light hearted joke is impressive. Also when they cut to Larry King and said "some sort of troll?" I almost died.

This show is adorable and hilarious. The main characters are all immediately likable, and the humor works on several levels so it's accessible to kids but still fun for older people. And the backgrounds are gorgeous and the animation super smooth. The main theme is very catchy, too.

Everything about it is great.

Anyone wants to speculate about the mysteries in the setting?

The numbered books have a six-fingered hand on their cover. That leads to looking at the number of fingers on the characters. As often with cartoons, the character have only four fingers (thumb included). Except... Some characters actually have five fingers. Stan, for example. As well as Soos. Or, outside of the more regular characters, Old Man McGucket or Manley Dan.

So it could be a child-vs.-adult thing, but... Li'l Gideon (a child) has five fingers. And some adults (such as Gossiper journalist Toby Determined).

On the other hand, some bit-characters like Deputy Durland have an inconsistent amount of fingers. [In the same scene, he has five during his dramatic entry (http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120704064732/gravityfalls/images/2/29/S1e3_blubs_and_durland_flashlights.png), and four when breaking a lamp (http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120704064809/gravityfalls/images/6/62/S1e3_deputy_durland_searching.PNG).

Love this show. The writing is smart and quick witted, the art direction is concise and pleasing, and you can tell that Disney's animation department is stepping their game up and pulling new tricks. In a sea of cheaply done, flat, overly angular shows you can tell there was some real skill that goes into it.

I gotta say having such a smartly done, brilliantly voice acted, superbly crafted piece is a treat. While the overarching plotline hints are something I'm eager to get a good look at the day to day comedy stuff is good enough I'm not exactly chomping at the bit for something more as much as I could be. If things go well it'll hit that special mix of comedy and plot I haven't seen pulled off right YEARS.

This is definitley something that stole a spot in my top 5 from day one and will probably keep climbing if it keeps pace with what it's set up.

Apparently there is going to be an arcade character who comes to life in a future episode, animated by Paul Robertson.

To anyone who doesn't know who that is, I wouldn't recommend googling him in a work environment, lets just say it's bound to be very awesome.

There is a Disney on Demand service that has granted the common man access to new episodes of Gravity Falls a full week before they air on television.

But I would not envy those who have taken this path, but instead pity them, for they have chosen to first experience the episodes of this great show at a mere 480p resolution.

I'm trying to figure out if Adventure Time or Gravity Falls gets more crap past the radar.

If I were to ask Vegeta how much crap they get past the radar, he'd say it's 1,006. Then he'd turn his scooter right-side-up.

Vegeta really should be wearing a helmet, and not riding motorized vehicles pasts two consecutive tv sets trying to get a reading on how much crap they get past the radar.

EDIT: So here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1X1KxUl2Pxo) an early animation clip. Would it be shallow of me to say I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the show so much if it was animated like this?

I was just thinking about the Presidential Key Dipper was given and couldn't help but wonder if it would actually ever be used again. Not just that really, but I could easily see the twins amassing a fair collection of otherwise useful objects and wondered if we would ever see any of them in action other then the episode they are first found. An example could be with Mable's grappling hook.
Similarly with new side characters I guess, while Mabel's new friends from the Double Dipper episode undouptably will show up again (I should hope) I wonder how such characters like, say, Mabel's new pet pig will continue to show up. After all, an item could be hand-waved away just by being lost in some proverbial closet, but it wouldn't be that easy to to explain away a living thing.

Hmm, but
How old was he in that scene? Mid-twenties? Admitly, he is probably in his mid-twenties in a small town, which is sort of odd in itself considering he has seemingly yet to convert his house into a tourist trap. Then again, would you expect a young twenty-somthing to be deep into importent secrets?

Also, just found this off the creators twitter feed.

I still see Soos as the Heavy: he has a similar build, in terms of facial features, I'd say he looks more alike, and I see Soos going the most crazy over a sandvich. Manly Dan I think would be better as the Soldier.

And speaking of Blandon, he needs to come back just so he can scream the word "UNACCEPTABLE!" and then throw someone in a dungeon for a million years. And then Manly Dan can turn into a magic dog and/or drunken robot.:smallwink:

Also, how many episodes can they get out of this show? I mean, Mable and Dipper are just there for the summer right? How many adventures can they go on in one summer? Or maybe I'm just over thinking this. Animated characters rarely seem to age or experience linear time. Look at how long Bart Simpson's been in the 4th grade.

It was hampered by the status quo more than anything.

I mean, Stan can't actually learn a passable lesson, and you knew the bet would fail as soon as the terms were set.

I'm kind of pissed to be honest, if only because it implies that Stan's dishonest, moneygrubbing ideals are the only way to run a buisness. Instead of Wendy being terrible, Dipper not settling for something small like gnomes, and Soos not having anything more to the costume than just the foam bits.

So... is this any good...?

Disclaimer - I tried to watch two episodes, but animation seems uneven, backgrounds though very nice don't fit characters, and the plots seemed trivial/clichéd.

Is it just me (and my currently bad) mood and series gets better later, or is it just not for me? :smallfrown:

No, it hasn't changed much. If you didn't like it, you probably won't. It's not my favorite show, but it has a lot of great jokes.

I'm mostly on it for the presentation. Mabel is gold.

Well, I personally love this show, but if it's not for you then it's not for you. Which episodes did you watch, by the way?

For the rest of you, fanart from the last episode (large image):

Mabel says she is awesome and you are too.

I love her shirts. And her pet. He is a genius.

Just caught up on the newest episode today, was funny. Blackmail never gets old.

Also, this screenshot suddenly becomes really dark.

I saw Bottomless Pit. Was a good, fun episode. Plenty of good old-fashioned Gravity Falls weirdness.

Carpet Diem was a fantastically funny episode!
And such a d'awww-worthy ending.

Best bit has gotta be the mass-switching near the end.

This is still a show? I thought all TV channels aimed at children discarded all their good shows.:smallconfused:

I really need to catch up on the new episodes.

It was!
