When life gives you styrofoam balls, make Beholders (or call a doctor).

I was running a D&D campaign with Beholders in it, and to my surprise, Wizards of the Coast has not made any freakin' Beholder figurines! (Not that I could find, anyway.) They're only one of the most trademark monsters in the system, so why would we want to go and do something like make some figures of them - especially when we could make a fiendish gnoll warlock instead. Everyone knows there are just dozens of them running around. 9_9

Anywho, I corrected this shortcoming by making my own out of styrofoam balls, brown paint, pipe cleaners, googly-eyes (yes they move) and my trusty glue gun (also useful for making drool). The mouth I grabbed from one of my many pics of Cthulhu type monsters and printed them out and glued them on.

Here you can see that I used homemade stands to put them on (courtesy of my husband). I placed an unpainted figure there for scale. The Beholders are about the right size in comparison to the human figure.

The finale of my campaign had a Beholder "Hive Mother" in it. They're bigger and nastier. Mine also happened to be a lich, but that's niether here nor there. ;-)

Never heard 'adorable' as an adjective for beholders before. They are like real-world OOTS-Style beholders! I don't have good arts & crafts expertice, but I do have an eye for it, and you are pretty good!

Ever think of selling stuff at craft fairs?

Sweet! If the cool mouths and drool didn't do it for me, the googly eyes definately did! Those look pretty awesome.

^^ They do look adorable. It's the googly eyes that does it.

I'm just reminded of a friend of mine who made a beholder plushie for her young son once. Of course she made the menacing eyes and mouth all cute and cuddly instead. After that her son kept wanting to go to the zoo to see beholders.

First picture should cover you pretty nicely if you want a nice official beholder mini. I like yours more though.

Wow, my limitation on things to represent D&D was some war hammer figurines I found around the place.

Need a white chromatic dragon? Use a clan rat.

I think I may need to steal those and add them to my collection of all things cute.

^ Well I've certainly never made a beholder-on-a-stick before so no arguments there.

One of the things my players said when engaged in combat with them was "I attack the stick that's holding it up." :-D
