What, didn't http://www.giantitp.com/comics/erf0026.html make it pretty clear that "Erf" is the only sensible equivalent to a man who thinks that "Earth" is a silly name for a home world, and that "dwagon" is a better name than "dragon"?

Earth commonly has two uses, one is the name of our planet and the other is another word for dirt/rocks/etc. Neither usage really has the same meaning as "world".

Put another way, you'd never hear a scifi conversation where one character asks another "What earth are you from?"

To that end, I agree that Stanley's comment that "Earth" is a stupid name for a world and "dwagons" is a better name for dragons kind of sets up that Erfworld is an alternate Earth.

(For what it's worth, google the phrase "what world are you from" and you'll get quotes from two films and ten pages of other hits. Google "what earth are you from" and you get exactly three, all of which use it in the context of "what Earth are you from" but can't be bothered with punctuation or capitalization.)

Even outside the realm of scifi there are phrases like "what color is the sky your world?" versus "what color is the sky in your earth?" Or "He's famous in the world of something-or-other," versus "He's famous in the earth of something-or-other."

You would never say "an earth" but you would say "a world". You would say "made of earth" but never "made of world".

They're related but they aren't the same.

World is a concept; Earth is a specific place, a proper noun; earth relates to things coming from the ground.
