Can we ban anymore people creating login names with the word shoe(s) in the title since most of the Advertising Spam lately has been shoe adverts.

God as long as we are on the issue what is up with all the spam lately. Is there some new spam bot the board is not built to filter out. I've seen a little spam during my time on this board but last few weeks have been nuts.

PlatinumJester

When I say ban the word shoe I mean for new forumites only. Anyone with shoe in their title should be allowed to keep it but new forumites shouldn't be allowed it in their name.

Why I remember the great Spam Wars of '06, when we fought back the ravening hoards with nothing but some spiteful words shared between a whole platoon.
And a wampa with a rail cannon.
'Course it didn't do much good, 'cos then they came back! With knives! And sticks! But then we threw Grey Watcher at them and they went away.

spammers should be savagely beaten by a panda with a bag of kittens. heres why: they will get hurt by the sheer impact, all pandas are cyborgs capable of applying 3000 tons of force with 1 finger, and if they dont mind the pain, but are still humans, they will feel bad about hurting kittens. anyone else agree that panda-torture is evil? all we need to do is capture a panda and reprogram it to hunt spammers.

and heres my idea, if the first post is about shoes AND their name is shoes AND it includes a link then ban em.

also isnt this illegal? seriously why arent there laws about people spamming.... i find it more inconvenient than some other things that are illegal. and it would be easy to enforce.

Banning new users that attempt to create a profile with the word "shoe(s) in the username is going to do nothing. They create an account with shoe(s), and BAM! Insta-ban. They realize their mistake after 1+ attempts, and stop making their username include "shoe(s.)"

Nice idea, but it won't really stop anything.

I'm an admin of another forum, and we had a rash of porn spammers at one point. You might want to check the E-mails of the spammers before you delete them, since the E-mails listed for our spammers were from .info addresses. I've never seen anyone legit using them, so we simply blanket banned the addresses with .info.

Worked for us, so I thought I'd chime in for you.

Wraithy

because if it had true merit it would be able to sell from normal adverts (tv, magazines etc.), the point is that their product is so rubbish that it needs to grasp for anything it can find, and these methods tend to annoy people so mutch that the company becomes antagonised. I'd never buy anything that spammed these forums

I'd say the people here are mature enough no to abuse something like that, and it would take some wait off the mods.I'm not sure whether that would work out.
While most people here are mature enough not to abuse that, it would actually take only a single person who is not to cause damage with that system (by just creating a whole bunch of different accounts).
Given the friendliness of these forums it's quite possible that we wouldn't find even a single person like that, but should we (or rather, the powers that be) take the chances?

well perhaps have different levels of moderatorship, perhaps one where if 3 or 4 reported a thread it would be auto-closed, and then full moderatorness. basically picking semi-trusted users to give that limited power to. because i noticed 4 or 5 spam threads earlier

Lord Herman
09-23-2007, 02:04 AM
I think changing the whole moderator system over this is a bit drastic. There must be a better (and simpler) way to stop these ad spamming bastards.

By the way, I don't believe they're spambots. I've spotted some inconsistencies between the different copies of the same ad, which can only be caused by someone not paying attention while copying a post over and over again.

isnt there some sort of legal action they can take against this company?

They're probably all based in countries that have freedom of expression, so it's doubtful.

isnt there some sort of legal action they can take against this company? well in the meantime keep track of company names who advertise, and make sure to NEVER buy anything from them.

and them SAYING their reputable companies makes it true. also is anyone here a lawyer? becuase that was probably a lie.

To be honest, I'd be impressed if they're a real company... I mean, I'm sure that someone replies to those e-mails, but I'd bet they can change their "company" name anytime they want.

@^ Even with freedom of expression, false advertising is still illegal. However, it's really hard to charge anyone with a crime on the internet, since it's so hard to trace. Unless there's a real financial damage it's hardly worth anyone's time.

Well, as I understand it (IANAL), free speech doesn't cover situations where the speaker, by speaking, is impinging on someone else's rights. These forums are owned by somebody: they take up hard drive space, processing time, electricity, and bandwidth. Rich allows us non-spammers to post here so long as we follow the rules (including the no-spamming rule). Those who break the rules cannot.

The spammers (and anyone else who breaks the rules) are effectively stealing Rich's resources (as apposed to Rich giving them away). This is illegal, or at a minimum actionable, but whether it's really enforceable or not is a different story.

I know there are a few people here who have spent time on rec.games.frp.dnd, a Usenet group (a forum that existed before the World Wide Web) dedicated to D&D. A couple years ago we had a disgruntled poster attack the group with spam, with the intention of making discussion impossible (the group was getting something like 1 spam post a minute). He succeeded for a couple weeks, but some of the regulars managed to contact his ISP, and they cut the poster off for violating the group's rules. So, at least in theory, there are recources that Rich and the mod squad can take. But I doubt they'd be practical except in extreme situations.

First, thank you to those of you who reported the various spam threads. Second, please don't post in the spam threads. It only brings more attention to the thread, which encourages the spammer and makes it more difficult to remove the spam. It's also against the rules for exactly those reasons...

Rules of Posting (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/announcement.php?a=1):

Responding to Spam
If you see a Spam post, please Report it. DO NOT respond to it, even if your response is "This is spam!" or a similar variation. All this does is draw attention to the thread, furthering the spammer's goals, and potentially make it more difficult for a Moderator to correct the problem; it does not in any way help.

We have been seeing a bit more spam lately than we've seen in a while. But even with the anti-bot authentication requirement to create an account, GitP actually gets quite a bit more spam than you usually see. Typically, we mods remove spam posts before they get more than a handful of views and after a single (or no) reports. Spam disappears entirely so that you never see that it's there. We are here working for you, but sometimes it takes a bit longer than other times.

Please, please don't encourage the spammers or post to spam threads. Every time that happens a moderator has to ban the spammer, dump all the spam, and then hand out "responding to spam" warnings on top of it. And as noted above those responses actually make removing the spam more difficult. (We can select all of a spammer's posts via checkboxes and remove them all at once, but if someone has responded to a spam posts, we have to go and remove that whole thread.) So please don't form anti-spam brigades or engage in spam wars. Just report the spam (once) and wait for us to take care of it. We will do so with all possible speed. We don't want that rubbish cluttering up the boards any more than you do. Thanks.

Thank you for cleaning up the mess Roland(and everybody else who was involved). I never actually saw the spam, though I have seen a few "Moved" threads that didn't have a destination I could see. One of which had a rather spammy title. I think that means that you are doing a good job.

Also I think they lie, they are not an professional company (and certainly not in the UK), because than they would let someone who speaks english write this. Even if they are not native speakers a company would pay for a translator. This really just looks like babelfish

true, but some of us grow, or occasionally break ours. but seriously, isnt there some license agreement? go to the site and tell the server people to shut these guys down because they have done soemthing technically illegal (they agreed to something to get the account right? which included not spamming? so why not at least TRY that.)

Alas, I'm pretty sure breaking the user agreement is not the same as breaking the law.

At least we have the anti-flood system in place. And at least they're not pornographic. At least it's not a...spam war. And at least we have mods who do their job.

There doesn't need for any measures to be taken, srsly.

Needless to say I pressed the little red triangle straight away.

we may not have a spam shelter, but I have a denial shelter. we can pretend nothing is happening in there while we wait for a moderator to log on.
as for food.... we'll have to eats threads under "silly message board games", they lack neutrients but contain enough padding to give us a small hope of surviving:
THE SPAM TIMES

*pokes head up from denial shelter*
we survived the 1st wave, but another will come, the end is nigh! *gets sandwich board and heads for oxford street*

P.S. don't eat any of the threads past the 10th page, just trust me on this

I think it's real people. There are some inconsistencies in the thread titles, which is what you get when someone copy-pastes the same text over and over again. A spambot would make the exact same post every time.

You could always go to the extremes I've seen elsewhere and make everyone log in with a bot filter image every time they enter the site. Currently, once they're past the registration the bots have free reign.

Nah, I'll just chose to ignore the spam the way I have been doing.

naaa not cost efficient. but we could destroy all spam in the world.... might be fun. oh well, ill stick with my "spam the spammers" option, anyone got any bots for it?

*sigh* Go away for a while and look what happens...

First and foremost I am going to introduce you to the primary rule of spam. NEVER reply to it. If you receive an email spam. Do not reply. Even if it asks you to unsubscribe. Doing so just confirms your email address as a valid email. This makes it worth more to them to sell and you will get more spam.

Again, do not reply to it on the forums either, we have a report button for incidents just like this. Replying to a spam thread is completely unwanted. Yes, even if all you say is something like "SPAM!". All it does is bounce the thread back to the top of the listings bringing more attention to it, keeping it in the spotlight longer, encouraging others to do the same, making it harder for us to clean up the mess and probably earning you a warning.

Don't PM a moderator about it either, there is a report this post feature you should be using as it can then be looked at by another moderator if the normal ones are off duty.

I see a lot of people who seem to be proud that they participated in some "spam war", I was not a moderator at that time, but I can with all honesty say that you should not be. Ignore the spam, report it, do not post to it, do not try and fight a war. This only makes things worse.

---

Don't bother trying to spam a spammer, its completely pointless. Not only do you give them another email to sell (even if you make a new one and close it - they still make money), but they themselves have countless email addresses they go through. When one starts getting too much spam, they just move on. You think they've never been counter spammed before? They've seen it all.

---

The problem with the internet is "who has jurisdiction?". Europe, Australia and the US can make as many anti-spam laws as they feel like, but it will do jack all. The majority of the spam comes from countries that have no such laws and don't care. There is very little you can do but protect your email address from being discovered, never replying to spam and ignoring it. Tracking them down is hard enough, but once you do there is very little, if anything, you can do.

---

The majority of the forum staff are based in America, we have one in the UK and one in Australia. So yes, most moderation will be done during the same time period and there may be gaps where things take a little longer to get noticed. Please report what you see, ignore it, sit tight and wait for a moderator. If a moderator hasn't had a chance to fix the problem don't keep complaining about it and work yourselves up into a fury, wait. We can't be here every single minute of every single day instantly fixing every issue.

---

We are not about to put a blanket ban on the word "shoe" because some shoe spammers are going to use it. There are many legitimate reasons someone might want to have the four letter combo of s-h-o-e somewhere within their name (Missing Shoe comes to mind). There are however some other names we could block, and I will be asking the other moderators to help me come up with a list that won't be restrictive.

---

We have several measures in place that hinder spammers from joining up, including one of those random character images. But like anything, it can never be perfect and there are ways to get around it some of the time (think of how bad it would be without it).

---

Using asterisks in place of swearwords (or allowing the filter to filter them) does not allow you to 'get around' the no swearing rule.

---

Origin of the term "spam" to mean net abuse (http://www.templetons.com/brad/spamterm.html)

---

I hope I have managed to address every point raised here in my absence. If I missed any, please PM me.
