The Silliad tries its best to update on a 1/week schedule.
The entire comic is based on Lattimore's translation of Homer's Illiad. Whenever someone talks in a really fancy way, it's probably a direct quote from the aforementioned book. At present, the only direct quote is Homer's speech from comic one. Thank you.

The comic will follow the general plot of The Iliad, but I will be taking huge amounts of artistic license for humor's sake. This will be a decent place to start, but don't take anything I say for granted. For instance, the first eight panels are word for word from the Iliad (Lattimore translation) but the last panel has no actual ties to what happens. Sorry. I'll try and keep people aware of when I'm diverging from reality (read: the iliad) and what parts of the plot I skip.

Ah! Good to know that my evaluation of Achilleus wasn't totally wrong.
Actually, the first couple comics (7, to be exact) are the acting out of events that only happen in narration. The realtime events of the Iliad don't start until the meeting of all the Achaians, and that won't happen until #8. But I'm getting ahead of myself - I'll explain how the comic fits in with the actual book as we go.

And yes, in the Lattimore translation it is spelled Achilleus. I believe that Achilles is a Romanization of the name... or something similar.

My belief is that it's the other way around Achilleus to me sounds more Romanized. It has the -eus suffix, which is often used in latin names.

Well, that's part of the reason, I'm sure, but it wasn't my decision. It was given to me, and that's probably why it was chosen.

You know. I really love this comic. Agamemnon was my favorite character in the Iliad. You really make him into the arrogant egocentric hero I like.

I've never quite seen Agamemnon as a 'hero.' Arrogant and egocentric, definitely. I've cast Agamemnon as a bit of a jerk, and in a story where there aren't really any clear-cut 'villains,' Agamemnon is a not quite as pro-tagonist.

Just out of curiosity, who's the second guy?
The new comic is in the works. I'll hopefully have it up by friday afternoon, as my internet (and computer, for that matter) access is going to be questionable from there to tuesday. I do have a lot of free time from there until the following monday, including an extensive stint with my editor in person, so I should be able to make several comics during that time, and maybe even begin rebuilding my buffer.

I didn't care much for the first strip, which was rather long-winded, but the comic has definitely picked up steam and humor meanwhile. Reminds me just how little I know of the classics. :smallredface:

From a hobby linguist's point of view, however, I would expect Achilleus to be the original Greek form and Achilles the latinized version. The Greek seem to have been a lot more fond of the -eu- diphthong (heck, diphthongs in general) than the Romans. I'd guess that Latin -eu- always spans two syllables, as in Piraeus (pi-rae-us), which is Peiraieus (pei-rai-eus) in the Greek original.

Oh, BTW, you might wanna correct the typo of Caesar in the banner.

We have... one more comic, and we can get to the meeting with Agamemnon and the rest of the leaders of the Achaians, which is (as anyone who remembers the plot of the Iliad knows) where the real plot begins. Why? Because I have never even heard of the Illiad, so this is all new to me. I have no idea what's going to happen next, so I love this comic.

Huh. Well, I don't actually use X11, it's just the basis for using Inkscape.
If you want to know how to download it... well, I can only help if you have a laptop. Leopard comes pre-installed w/ X11, Panther gets it downloaded off the internet (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/x11formacosx.html), and Tiger has to download it from the extra CDs that you get with the laptop.
If I've totally missed what you were trying to say... then I'm not surprised.

I use tinypic (http://tinypic.com/). It never shinks an image but it does make the image blurry if it's too big. It would have to be pretty damn big, though.

Yeah, Macs suck. We made that mistake once, and never made it again. The "User friendly computer" is really a self-terminating high security piece of @%$&. It can't even run freaking .exe files.... We also got x11 to try to be able to do SOME things on it, and the mac self terminated it, but didn't terminate the fact that the file was on the computer, so whenever we try to run something that uses x11, a message appears saying we don't have it. When we go to download it again, it says we already have it... It's horrible. It's so unintuitive, too. I've hardly ever had to call microsoft reporting an error... With Macs, I want to call every week to complain....

In the book, that's actually the point. In this exchange, both Athena and Achilleus know that since Athena's a goddess, she's powerful enough to make him do whatever he wants. In addition, Achilleus already knows about a prophecy saying that he'll die if he fights in the Trojan war. So, both of them know that the promise is no more then a formality.
… in the comic, it's more fun (and funny, imho) to look at what the characters are doing, ignore the deeper motivations, and say, "Look! This guy is doing something really ridiculous! Let's mock him for it!"

I'd love to, but as it stands I'm struggling to keep up with the Silliad itself. A guest comic would have to replace a regular update, and would take longer to make (as I already have most of the comics until ~30 roughly plotted out, whereas I'd have to come up with an entirely new idea for BTSS). This didn't come out quite as well as I would have hoped, as I did a last-minute scripting change (which is why it took so long), but I'm pretty happy with the result. The next comic actually has a workable script, so the update should be on time.

Ok, so it's time to admit to myself that I don't have the drive for this anymore. I just don't want to do it – it's feeling more chore then fun.
Now, this could be temporary. It could be that once I no longer have deadlines, I'll be able to recapture the enthusaism I had at the beginning. It could be that this will die forever. I really don't know. But I have the feeling that guilt will work its way in there somewhere. :smalltongue:
So, in other words, the Silliad is now on indefinite hiatus. Sorry to those who enjoyed it, but it really wasn't working anymore.
