My own blatant thievery of Zeta Kai's Vote Up A Monster! This contest aims to create a D&D villain, complete with fluff! Please bold your vote.

This round's villain has been completed! I present to you the Maiden's Weeping (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5213912&postcount=261), aka the Swain of Varrone.

Hmm, well I'll go ahead and vote for Undead. Also, on the motive chart you forgot boredom. After all, thats what motivates the best villans.

Owrtho

afroakuma

Apathetic malice covers that.

Shadow_Elf

Plant! I want to see a malevolent tree

Owrtho
10-28-2008, 05:40 PM
But that requires a desire to harm others. A villan motivated by boredom might just want to stir things up so they aren't bored anymore (for example if they are in power they could pass some akward laws that make everyone hate them but cause no real harm. Like making it manditory to great people with "I'm gunna kill you!" while waving a weapon).

Also, since it seeing the other votes I'm going to change mine from undead to ooze. I might change it later to plant or abberation though (after all, eldritch horrors are awsome and so can be plant monsters).

Owrtho

I vote for plant too. You don't see many of those these days.

afroakuma
10-28-2008, 05:47 PM
That is malice. Wanting to cause a disturbance to others. The apathetic part is the boredom.

But we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I've checkedthe changed votes and tallied them. In the future, please bold your vote... makes it go quicker. Thanks!

Voting for animal just because of the implications. It would be interesting to see a terrifying villain made out of something that isn't sentient.

Actually, I never heard of VT's Monster of the Masses, but I'm not surprised that such a thing has been done before. I'm glad people like my approach to this method of monster (or in this case, villain) creation.

As for my vote (yay, I get to vote on something!), I'm gonna add another one to Plant. It's an intriguing notion, one that I'm sure will yield interesting results.

What's that that's growing over there? Its the support for the EVIL PLANT

sigurd
10-29-2008, 02:16 AM
The Corrupting Lazarus plant. It corrupts and takes over the mind of those that inhale its spores but the spores have rejuvenating properties on physical cells. Those that have been attacked by the plant do not suffer any penalty for age for one full year. The power of the spores works in their bodies repairing and changing them.

Those that resist the plant's attacks are changed such that they have an increased chance of corruption each successive time.

The plant is actually the best attainable cure for some diseases.

It is deadly to all life but even more immediately destructive to the undead. Undead in the presence of Lazarus spores decompose at 25 times the normal rate as the spores compost the unnaturally animated flesh.

Lazarus zombies actually seek out undead hosts to begin a new plant.

Sigurd.

Technically speaking, Audrey II wasn't even close to a flower, and I'm not talking about his singing voice.

I meant more like a single plant with a single flower, as opposed to a mass of deadly but beautiful vines, or a sapient rose bush.

I'm cool with anything, of course. I just wanted to see a 12ft flower tearing people apart.

It apparently has four wings. Two scaly, two bat-like, all awesome. And I didn't have the luxury of having a subtype table to work with, so I improv'd with the BS regular-type-as-a-subtype. I'm thinking it adds up to a Surrusus or whatever that creepy air-loving walker from the MMIII is called.

Class levels may not suit this creature unless it is particularly anthropomorphic, but its mechanics shape the way that it functions with and is viewed by the world. If you don't want to have it advance by class, i think we should at least vote on a class for it to be similar to.

Seems simple enough. First youd have to do what I'd think are the three main points which whould be something along the lines of: Locations (island, contenental, single land mass, etc.), Setting (scifi, steampunk, fantasy, modern, etc.), and Environment (Sky, aquatic, tropical, dessert, city, etc. probly combinations to). Then from there you would have races and civilizations and monsters. Then classes. Then other specifics. I probly missed some stuff, but that would probably be the general gist of it.

Though the work of making the setting could be a bit difficult and challenging.

Owrtho

afroakuma

It's the making sure that things don't become ridiculous (sahuagin populating an all-desert world) that's tough.

Owrtho

afroakuma
10-30-2008, 08:40 PM
Zeta and I both frown on having to pull that one out. I installed a perma-veto on Classes in this one, oddly enough, to encourage greater variety. Also so that if an unintelligent creature was voted for I wouldn't have to augment its Int score to allow a class. However, my perma-veto hits before the results start pouring in. And I still felt a bit self-peeved about calling it this time.

Owrtho
10-30-2008, 09:16 PM
That is the reason you determine environment first and then don't alow such blatantly impossible races as options.

Apathy and boredom are not the same. They are simmilar, and can overlap, but when it comes down to it are completely different. Appath is a complete lack of emotion over something. Boredom however is closer to a lack of contenment. One can be apathetic and not be bored. Also, that is somewhat beside the point as being motivated by entertainment is different than being motivated by boredom. In the case of boredom, you want to stop being bored and do stuff so you aren't (often because you have nothing better to do). When motivated by entertainment however, one wouldn't care what otheer things they have to do, they just wanna have a good time and do stuff to do so. And looking at what I've writen I notice I seem to be splitting hairs, but I find the differances to be quite drastic (even if no one else does).
