so far the game is great, lots of atmosphere and some very nice boss fights. reminds me a lot of Binding of Isaac.
I'm pretty sure that's a bug. That, or you unlock but forget to equip lessons, or... something?

Do you have any recommendations to get around that?

I think he means specifically multiplayer.
I ended up getting him the first Dawn of War (with a bonus of Rome: Total War), but if you can no longer play multiplayer with that, it's kind of an empty gift. :smallfrown::smallsigh:

I am assuming that since he is trying to use some external program that the game has some sort of LAN play option.

Re: [Steam] Thread XXXIII: The only winning move is not to play
Is there any way to download patches so me and my friends can play on the same patch without having to go to 1.0?

A quick google search indicates that Relicnews.com (via Gamershell.com) and Filefront.com seem to have various DoW patches.
What expansion packs are you using? That will affect what patches you need.

Re: [Steam] Thread XXXIII: The only winning move is not to play
So Rome: Total War has the Seven Wonders of the World, which provide a pretty nice boon to the controller of the region they're in. Are there any similar things in the other Total War games? I've only played Rome and Shogun 2, but didn't progress far enough to discover such with the second one.
Are there any similar things in other grand strategy games? (Maybe a Paradox game has something of the sort, but they're so huge it'd be natural to miss all these times.)

Well, now my friends have a problem. Now when they try to enter in their previous version CD-keys to use the previous races, its coming out with an error message that its not recognizing the CD-keys. They are trying to play from soulstorm and they can't get access the previous races in multiplayer. Anyone have a solution?

I know that some of the big R:TW mods like EB or RSII have wonders. EB II has Tons! And the 1648 mod for M2:TW has a special building for every city.

Edit the registry or use the Soulstorm Race unlocker.
Both methods require legitimate CD keys so make sure your friends are typing them in correctly.

Erm, could you maybe give the full name of those mods? I'm not familiar with any Rome: Total War mods, not to mention their abbreviations.

Re: [Steam] Thread XXXIII: The only winning move is not to play
Oh! Europa Barbarorum and Roma Surrectum 2,
. I'd recommend trying both. EB is especially satisfying if you read history books for fun, as each building and unit has, after the short blurb telling you what the unit or building is and does, a nice big history bit about it that I just looooooved.

As far as Paradox goes, Europa Universalis 4 has triggered modifiers - things you can accomplish which give you certain bonuses, like controlling Jerusalem or having a trade route to the East Indies. Can't speak for any other game.

What can you guys say about The Showdown Effect?

I tried to play it a month or so ago after getting it in a bundle, but given that the community seemed to be pretty much dead, don't have much to say. :smalltongue:

Re: [Steam] Thread XXXIII: The only winning move is not to play
AD&D: Champions of Mystara is on Steam now. Two old-school but deep side scroller beat-em-ups. I was very excited to see this since my only console is a Wii and it was downloadable for both XBox and PS

I do believe enough people played that we had an FTL thread at one point.

I wish i was around for that. I just got the game last night, struggling on easy difficulty due to low amounts of knowledge. Learned a lot in first playthrough though.

Re: [Steam] Thread XXXIII: The only winning move is not to play
Oh, but I am loving every moment of the game.

FTL's a fun game, but rather RNG-dependent. Go ahead and stay on easy difficulty for a while until you learn it more and start unlocking some different ships.

so you're saying that there actually is luck involved? or that i need to know every possible outcome of every possible encounter?

There's definitely luck in what events you run into, what loot you get, what stores you get and what they have, what sectors you run into...the RNG plays a big role in FTL.

Absolutely huge role. Good luck with unlocking some ships, such as the ones that require you to run into and complete a specific quest in the beginning of the game, then do it twice more, hold onto items you don't need, and find a specific sector late in the game which doesn't spawn often.
Also, outcomes of events are random too. What is a perfectly harmless ship one playthrough is out for blood the next.

P.S. Good luck beating the final boss on easy, without resorting to cheese tactics.

Re: [Steam] Thread XXXIII: The only winning move is not to play
I have more questions to whoever has the dawn of war games. My friends and I are trying to put together "LAN" games with the help of the program Evolve, which can effectively make us play a game as if it were LAN. My friends and I have done this multiple times with different games without a hitch, however the Dawn of War series doesn't seem to work with this.
Anyone know how to play multiplayer with DoW after the multiplayer servers went down?

Dawn of War II?

Ugh, the final boss. Spoilers for that fight:

I hate how the boss cheats. Being hard is one thing; it's quite another to be unfair in ways that no other enemy in the game is. Ridiculously OP weapons, that crazy drone attack, and a recharging Zoltan shield... :smallsigh:
