Re: Iron Chef Optimization Challenge in the Playground LVIII
Reveal/Submission date pushed back to WEDNESDAY, JULY 9TH.
Spoiler: Reasons
Show
You guys might have known this, but I tend to spend my summers (at least a month or two) working at the family farm (mainly because I'm standing to inherit it).
I don't know about the Americans here, but I'm pretty sure that the Canadians have heard about the flooding in Western Manitoba.
Guess where the farm is.
1 Mandatory Evacuation later, and I end up without internet for a week (we fell out of the Evacuation area, but Manitoba Hydro cut the power to the nearby town, which provides us with Internet Access).
I'm answering all PMs now - terribly sorry about the wait, folks.

Call off the search party! I found the chair!

All cool man. Glad to hear you're ok

Re: Iron Chef Optimization Challenge in the Playground LVIII
Did you want to schedule your next week without internet access for the next round's reveal now, or would you prefer to play it by ear, Kuulvheysoon? :smallwink:
Glad you're okay.
-
Re: Iron Chef Optimization Challenge in the Playground LVIII
welcome back.
With the delay in submission deadline, I'll look into finishing my half-finished build anyways, since i really like it
-
Re: Iron Chef Optimization Challenge in the Playground LVIII
Called it XD. Glad to hear you are all well and safe, Kuulv.
-
Re: Iron Chef Optimization Challenge in the Playground LVIII
Nice to see that the Chairman is okay, hope the flooding doesn't destroy too many assets.
-
Re: Iron Chef Optimization Challenge in the Playground LVIII
Best wishes for all the people in Western Manitoba and you as well.
When all is ok, we're glad to see you well and neat.
Since the date has been postponed, I'll work on the part of the build I had to rush up and that usually grants Elegance points (like, you know, making any sense and stuff :smalltongue:)

Re: Iron Chef Optimization Challenge in the Playground LVIII
flooding sucks - hope all turns out well

Junkyard Wars on its fifth round has become quite successful in its own right.
About the reveal postponement:
I'm glad that the Chairman is all right too. Good to hear that he and his family are safe. That is what is really important.
But can I say that there seems to be a lot of impatient people here? I mean really, there were people frothing at the mouths when Kuulvheysoon was an hour late. I mean there was serious talk about an interim chair after two whole days!
Real life takes precedence when things happen that no one has control over. Kuulvheysoon does not have a history of "flaking out" and disappearing for weeks/months on end so if he was silent, it had to be a serious reason. These things happen!
In a similar vein, before I took the Chairman responsibilities of Zinc Saucier, the entire competition waited over two weeks for the end of round reveal. We wanted to give mattie_p as much time as possible to come back. Even after I ended that round (XVIII for those keeping score at home) the next one did not start for another two weeks. Why? Both to give mattie_p more time to come back and to realign the schedules with Iron Chef.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate all of the volunteering and can-do! attitudes of this group. I just thought it was very premature. I'm glad that Ponies got the gang to wait at least a week.
And while I'm thinking about it:

Joke's on you! Even with the extra time given I'm still not going to have a build submitted that I feel would be worthy for entering. I believe that I will have the time to judge this round however. Nothing to see here . . .
-
Re: Iron Chef Optimization Challenge in the Playground LVIII
Okay, a couple things. Ponies waited until 5-days after the Chairman was last on before he mentioned it and then wanted to wait a week, so close to 2-weeks just like with your ordeal. The reason it was called after 2-days is because it would take some time to organize everything and get the builds resubmitted, etc. Furthermore, the delay because real life issues does impact other people's real life issues. I had a 3-day weekend to handle the judging but now I have to take time out of work and school in order to do the judging, which is fine but not as preferable. So there is cause to be impatient as it does impact other people.
Also, I'm not trying to screw you dysprosium. I don't see how the joke would be on me for that. Kazudo for stealing Ponies' avatar and making him change it so that they stopped getting confused is a whole other story. :smallfurious: read my signature if you're unsure how to take that.

That's partially my doing. I sent in a revised version of my first build which took two PMs and a second build which the extra time allowed me to finish last night.

I believe you missed my point. Ponies is the rational one. I realize how the reorganization was going to work and that the holiday weekend was going to be convenient for those judging. Kuulvheysoon has all of the builds. Why not give him the time to get his stuff together? How would anyone know if all of the builds were resubmitted? Not everyone posts on the thread that they entered their submission. Had I entered this round I would not have been able to resubmit over this weekend. I imagine that other entrants would have had similar issues. Does that mean we would lose out then?
Having to explain a joke makes it unfunny. You would not have been able to screw me over--like you had said in your quoted post--since I had not entered. The funny part was that I took myself to be the one you were going to single out. I realize that Deadline had beat me to the punch with his response but I still wanted to post my own reply.

Ponies was the first one to offer and/or call for a sub-chairman. So everyone else is impatient, but the first person to say something?

Citizen Kazudo, are you implying that Citizen OMG PONIES is merely of ULTRAVIOLET clearance? Shame on you. Please report to your mandatory Happy Fun Time at your local HDP & MC center.
In other news, I feel that the topic of impatience may be connected to the recent quibbles over judgings and disputes. On a related note to that, Iron Chef receives far more attention (and has a far longer track record) than any of the other optimisation challenges which are currently running on this board. Or maybe we can just pass this off as everyone still being slightly rattled after last round.

The Computer's wholly adequate educational material did not deem it necessary information that higher clearance than ULTRAVIOLET exists. I believe it has been sabotaged by commie mutant traitors. If the computer requests, I can always go find some and eliminate them as threats so that order is restored.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand bubble burst. Back to the drawing board.
Though to be fair, if I could just get a coherent challenge made the first time instead of trying to be difficult, edgy, and horrible at darts, this wouldn't be as big of a problem.

Give it another couple of years, Kazudo, and I think Junkyard Wars could reach similar heights as Iron Chef. Then again, by that time Iron Chef will be even more popular, and so it will be even bigger. On the third hand, these competitions might not even be a 'thing' anymore. :smallconfused:
Iron Chef competitions didn't get to be 10 pages long before the reveal overnight, yaknow. Junkyard Wars is doing just fine.

Hey, is everyone into '80s British ska bands all of a sudden? Because this thread has devolved into Madness! Thank you, thank UB40, I'm here all week.

Nah, sorry, noble but wrong. The reason I offered to Insta-Chair was because I was antsy and impatient and figured others would be as well. :smalltongue:

It's the problem of efficiency. If the trains are always an hour late, you're impressed when they're only 30 minutes behind. If the trains are always on time, though, even a 5-minute delay grinds peoples' gears. Since Kuulvheysoon has a pattern of being a timely, reliable chair, people got scared when he wasn't popping in on the dot like usually. I just offered myself up as a security blankie. Weird analogy, but go with it. All the while, I knew that Kuul would pop in before the time frame I gave in order to update us. Basically, I believe in Santa Claus Kuulvheysoon.

On that note, does anyone on these boards actually play Paranoia? It seems like the zany sort of thing I've been trying to get into. Good, they haven't realized yet that the OMG PONIES algorithm has been functioning as written. My identity as The Computer is secure, and nobody will ever read these secret, innermost thoughts since they're in Invisible Italics!

I run Paranoia in an IRL game once in a blue moon, and offer to do so for anyone who feels incapable of running their own game in any of the gaming groups I'm aware of. What's that? Your GURPS DM going out of town for the night? Still hungover from July 4th and can't form coherent sentences? You're missing too many players for your story to be legitimate? You just want a change of scene for a week? You want a roleplaying exercise?
You get Paranoia! You get Paranoia! You get Paranoia! Check under your seats! Everyone gets Paranoia!
...Citizen, why didn't you check under your seat? Are you afraid of fun? Not having fun is treason. You're not attempting to be treasonous are you? Or maybe you've found some other way to have fun that isn't sanctioned by your friend, the Computer.
Well, that guy's volunteered to be reactor shielding. Anyway, I've never DONE Play By Post games so I wouldn't know how to run one on this board to save my life. I wouldn't mind doing it though. How interesting would it be if your friend, the Computer, was actually a computer?
-
Re: Iron Chef Optimization Challenge in the Playground LVIII
In regards to discussion of Paranoia, I have GMed more games than I've played. Not that either number is terribly high, but dedicated players aren't exactly common.
Unless you're running Straight, the tone and pacing of Paranoia doesn't really fit the play-by-post format. The game plays best when players aren't given hours with which to mull over answers and responses, so a real-time hosting method (such as in a chatroom) is usually a better option.
This topic might be more suited to another thread, though. I'd do it myself, but I don't know the first thing about hosting or advertising on these forums.
