Turns out it can be either, so it doesn't much matter. Though I'd suspect the Kyuubi of being uninterested in the pleasure of the flesh as being just as likely as him not having a gender himself.

I was thinking that the bijuu probably aren't interested in sex or romance, but honestly I'd be surprised if they had a biological sex*, although they might consider themselves to have a gender*.
* Here sex refers to what kind of naughty bits you are born with (or perhaps your genes, it depends on who you ask) while gender refers to some sort of cultural identity. This is actually a recent and somewhat arbitrary distinction (although not one without value), but it is the closest thing to standard terminology.
While it is theoretically likely that manifstations of chakra are genderless I'd assume Kishi pictures them with some kind of gender, knowing him most probably male. Not that it matters that much... fanfiction writers will change that around as they see fit anyway. :smallconfused: Whether they have a sex drive in canon... I don't think we will ever know. So probably we can assume: no.
Awesomeness. Awesomeness everywhere, especially in Rock Lee's Springtime of Youth manga.
Know pain!
Hey guys, the website I was using to read the new episodes has apparently been removed. Anyone got a new site for me to re-catch up on episodes of the manga?
Well, for the manga, i'm fond of mangahere.com...
On the whole "What could be worse then the I-Hax clan and the Tentecle Nuke" for the movie..... Personally, it'd be intresting to see a Naruto VS Hulk movie. Worldbreaker Hulk in perticluar. Just me two cents.
Oh.
My.
Lichemaster.
Shippudden Will of Fire is the
BEST NARUTO MOVIE EVER!!!!!!
It's... it's... it's pretty much nearly perfect!
A clear-cut villain, with nice, sensible world-domination, motives, everybody in it - no extraneous protagonist characters, just using the character we know and love, everyone fighting as a team!!, a message that actually really works, for once, EPIC music, and using the character development of the anime to sharpen the conflict, and provide credible reasons for Shika and Naruto to be at odds...
SpoilerNaruto verses Gaara, round 2! Giant Ninja spike missile launchers - they SO better be using them in the whole Forth Ninja War gubbins! Epic team giant monster beat-downs! (Ye gods, Tenten!)
I REALLY like the message, that was "screw self-sacrifice, and screw the odds, as a team we're unbeatable!"
And rounding it out with that trademark Naruto humour - and for once, and ending that didn't feel rushed and closed nicely!
HUZZAAAAAAAAH!
That, THAT is how the series should end, on that sort of note. Frag all this character death and one-on-one stuff, an epic beatdown with every major character pummeling the Ten-Tails/Madara/Obito/Sasuke into bloody powder with stupendous jutsu so fast thyey can't do anything but shriek and get discombulated hit after hit after hit, THAT is what the climax of the series should be!
I think that was the best Naruto story I've ever watched or read in any medium!
...
...
Okay, I think I'm calm now, I just needed HUZZAAAAAH!
No, no, I'm going to be hyped for freaking hours!!
That.
Was.
AWESOME!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Was that the one with
Spoilerthe guy who tried to steal some bloodlines?
If so, then I'd say yes, it's worth it (though this comes from someone who doesn't watch the anime, but does watch the movies, generally). I liked the second Shippuuden movie (Bonds) more in its tone and pacing, but it has a premise that kind of breaks suspension of disbelief due to including things that tie in heavily to canon stuff, but isn't canon. The third one had great fights and a wicked, great villain.
That villain was great, even though I saw a lot of points where he could've been better. I thought the fight was a bit short, not primarily because it's shounen, but because it made the villain seem so easily defeated.
I really liked it though. If only because the villain was largely an exact copy of my main Naruto RP character from five years ago, before the movie was even in production. :smallamused:
I haven't ever participated in a Naruto RP on GitP, sadly, because I never bothered to learn the mechanics of Naruto d20.
I played the character on several Proboards RP forums though. The character was named Shinekai Urukihara.
Huh. I see. Guess it is a shame then that it's no longer running, might've been interesting to hop in with Uru.
New chapter
SpoilerWriting seemed a bit sloppy here, at least the translations. I mean what the characters say, overall the way the chapter played out it looked pretty good following the last few chapters and setting up for the next.
Nice to see that they're using an upscaled Ino-Shika-Chou too.
Yeah, translation really seems sloppy this time... (So it's not just me)
Spoiler
Okay, Maximized Ino-Shika-Cho is neat and Kyubi fueled ninja alliance is pretty badass but... WTF IS UP WITH THE FIRST PAGES? That's what we get from Sasuke? Do you think we forgot about him or what? Do we really need that stupid teaser? :smallmad:
You and me both, LaZodiac. You and me both.
SpoilerFigured that if the Hokages weren't resurrectable, at least they could still use their heads. :smallamused:
This seemed like a good place to ask a lore question.
Would merchants heading to a hidden village vanishing, and sightings of foreign shinobi be enough to cause a village to start getting more of it's low rank shinobi into teams?
In a campaign I'm running(set in Kaminari no Kiri) I started it with the players(all starting as mid rank genins) by having them at a meeting where team pairings were being announced(just by having one of the jounin of the village read the pairings off of a scroll, rather then anything fancy).
from a gm perspective, I decided that it might make the village wary, as some of the sightings reported one of the foreign shinobi being a missing-nin, though the village leaders decided to keep that part secret from the populace.
Missing merchants would likely be cause for patrols searching for bandit forces. Spotting foreign nin, not missing nin though, that would be reason to raise an alert. Not a full scale war alert, but enough to send out patrols of higher ranked ninja to see what they can figure out, trigger a letter of protest if the kage is feeling diplomatic. Basically a more polite version of, "Why the hell do you have troops inside MY borders? Remove them and explain yourself or else." And yes, I would say making sure you dont have any ninja wandering around on their own would make sense. Especially if there have been any attacks on shinobi in the area.
New chapter bla.
Spoiler
Nothing... disappointing but nothing I really feel like commenting on. A lot going on and at times again kind of hard to see what exactly it was. Kurama says Naruto has surpassed his parents, Ninja alliance goes ape **** on the Uchihas, apparently Kishi felt he did have to say a little more about Neji's death... and maybe next time we will get to know a bit more about Sasuke's group.
SpoilerIf we get nothin on Sasuke's group next time, I'm gonna be miffed. Two teasers two chapters in a row? Geez.
Otherwise, an okay chapter, but nothing staggering. I liked the explanation of how the Kyuubi could give its chakra to the shinobi alliance, as well as Lee showing a bit of awesome.
This response isn't aimed at any specific chapter, as I only follow Naruto through the NA WSJ, so this is more of a general heads up:
If a translation feels off/sloppy, and the group that did the scanlation you're reading is Mangapanda, note that Mangapanda is bad at translation.
(you're welcome to skip the rest of this post if you don't care for how I arrived at that statement)
I base that statement on a comparison of a few panels from the latest chapter of One Punch Man I did yesterday, since that's how I first heard of Mangapanda's reputation and OPM's original version is freely available on the Tonari no Young Jump website.
And from looking at the original, me and my struggling with online dictionaries for kanji do a better job translating than what Mangapanda did. The stuff they put in sometimes have no basis in what was stated in the original. At least once they've gotten the subject/object completely flipped around.
Now, my Japanese is not good at all. But I can still translate more accurately than them. So I strongly recommend avoiding them if possible.
(on a side note: for OPM, Boon scanlations is good)
Here's a couple of examples for those curious:
Original: "Watakushi no Tomboy wo mikitta... !?"
Boon: "How did it see my Mighty Reckless Thrust 'Tomboy' coming!?"
Mangapanda: "Maybe we should give up...!?"
Literally it's basically "He saw through my Tomboy...!?". I... I don't know how Mangapanda could possibly come up with what they did.
Original: "Yarujan"
Boon: "Hey, not bad"
Mangapanda: "I'll kill you"
It's a shortened form of yarujanai, which is a common way of saying 'not bad'. This should be something a translator should know just from experience. Hell, I'm sure this is one of those phrases any anime fan should at least have an idea of just through repeated exposure.
So... why are Orochimaru's shoulders so freaking huge in that last panel?
Well it looks like...
SpoilerHinata plays the healer role better than Sakura. :smalltongue:
It's in the source material:
Oh, Orochimaru having Michael Jackson as a fan nickname thing comes from the combination of...
Michael Jackson's appearance after treatment to deal with Vitiligo
And... um, his reputation due to little kids and Neverland Ranch
Contrasted with...
Orochimaru's skin colour and his.... infatuation with young Sasuke.
...and I suppose young Anko and the Sound ninja shown in part 1 being young teenagers doesn't help either.
Oh god yes, pedomaru style jokes are even more common than such humorous lines as Sas-gay, or Sas-uke. You can go for hours making various pedo orochimaru jokes. Some of my favorites include, "Well, what are we supposed to think, snake face? You run around the forest, giving pre teen boys hickeys and inviting them to run away with you!"
Well, yea, it is. Although it is reflective of the stark contrast between people remembering Michael Jackson the super star and people remembering Michael Jackson post-active-pop-stardom.

So, as a little personal challenge to myself, each week I will translate the little random ToC comments Kubo/Kishi/Oda make if I can find a scan for the next issue, which is what you guys have read yesterday.
And what does Kishi have to say...
"J no shinnenkai ittekima****a!! Rensai 1 nenme irai 13 nen buri ni bingo de ichiban ni natta!"
He went to the Jump New Year's party. Starting from his 1st year of serialization to the 13th year, he.... became #1 at Bingo?
I..think I got something off here :smallconfused:
I think he's implying that in the time it's taken for him to get to thise stage of the game, as it where, he's become really good at Bingo.
One wonders how one can be good at a game of chance. Perhaps they mean a different type of Bingo, like Meme Writing Bingo, not the number drawing type.
Oh, also, if I may ask, could another little feature you do be "translate crap Panda gets wrong or gets clunky" because I swear some lines just make no sense but I have no other source of manga reading (I'll be trying to get Mom to get me a subscription to Shounen Jump though, seeing as how it's concurrent)
Could be. I can't think of any other way to interpret what he said.
As for your request...
I'm not sure how easy or difficult it will be for me to find raws... actually, scratch that, it doesn't seem so difficult to find the most recent raws (thanks, internet!).
Oh, thank the gods, WSJ still includes furigana (OPM doesn't, because apparently when a magazine targets seinen, furigana isn't necessary anymore... but I'm digressing here).
Unless there's something fishy you want to be examined soon*, what I'm thinking is that I'll wait until Monday/Tuesday/whenever I get around to reading WSJ, then maybe read the Mangapanda version in parallel, then take notes of any drastic conflicts. I tend to trust Viz's work, so I probably won't attempt a personal look at the raw unless specific panels are requested or something comes up that piques my own interest.
*you know what, if there are any specific panel requests before Mondays, I don't mind taking a stab at them in my spare time
The one I'm most specificly concerned about is the last bit of this week's Bleach. Specificly the "Kenpachi Zaraki, you won't die" series of lines.
Basically it's the last page of this week's chapter. Thanks, you're kind of amazingly awesome
EDIT: Just noticed you have a One Punch Man line and picture in your sig. I love you forever. It's so great.
I'll post my quick thought on that over in the Bleach thread
(and yes, OPM is awesome stuff; the sig is my way of advertising it :smallcool:)
LaZ - do you ever look at manga stream? Their translations are different than Panda.
I think we can safely combine Rock Lee's Springtime of Youth to this thread. In which case, new chapter. Snakes!
So mangapanda looks to be largely technically accurate (or close enough for me to not particularly care), though I find myself generally preferring how Viz phrases their translation.
(minor) Quibbles I have:
Page 10 of raw/11 on mangapanda: First panel, minor quibble which I have with both translations; they're both right, but I simply don't like either of their phrasing as much. But it does fit with how Viz has been characterizing Obito.
Original: Hyuuga no souke to bunke ga undekita shinobi no noroi.... kago no naka de shi wo matsu dake no sonzai.
The way it reads in my head: The curse of those shinobi born into the head and branch Hyuuga families... Their existence is only to wait for death in a cage.
Same page, next panel, where Obito says 'That's a nice suggestion. Like the brat you just let die in vain.' in the panda version. Viz nails it; I'm not fond of how panda worded the latter line.
Viz: It's a nice analogy for our current situation. You all are exactly like that brat who just died a pointless death.
Original: ... ii anji da. Omaera wa sakki no inuji ni ****a gaki to onajida.
My gut translation: ... that's a good suggestion. You all are like that brat who just died in vain.
Not a lot of text in this chapter; the raw didn't take too long to follow either. (thanks readable furigana and online dictionaries!)
Far cry from my experience struggling through Bleach ch 1 with physical dictionaries for class :P
------
Edit:
Issue #10/Feb 4's ToC has been scanned. So what does Kishi have to say this week...
"Karada wo kotaeyou to omotte ranningu ****ara, kaze wo hikima****a. Ichinichi ni ****e zasetsu!!"
I'm not even entirely sure I've got the first half right, as a couple of the kanji were really hard to make out, along with the furigana.
So, because Kishi did some strenuous running, he caught a cold. That set him back a day.
Well, Kishi, take more care with exercising outside during the winter.
SpoilerFinally something happens. Quite interesting really, does this mean Oro is a lot more powerful than before?
Please spoiler stuff related to new chapters. That is kind of a big spoiler, even if it is only in mentioning.
New Chapter
SpoilerWelp...didn't see that coming. My money was on the old man and woman who were around Danzou, and the third hokage's age. So, are they under Orochimaru's control? Or do they still have free will?
Sure.

SpoilerWelp...didn't see that coming. My money was on the old man and woman who were around Danzou, and the third hokage's age. So, are they under Orochimaru's control? Or do they still have free will?
SpoilerI think they are under his control.
Actually
SpoilerThe Uzamaki house seems like a pull. All of a sudden a shrine with masks dedicated to the Uzamaki lineage is here. We most go there and get a mask to do a jutsu.
All though I guess it could work, Uzamaki sealing techniques and what not. But I doubt Naruto is even aware of the places existence, much less his name is on it. It just came out of nowhere...unless it has been mentioned somewhere before.
SpoilerSo, is next chapter time for exposition dump? Makes me think if those 4 know anything we don't know at this stage? Also, why did Oro took Zetsu's body? Hashirama's cells probably, but Zetsu never seemed that strong.
SpoilerMy theory is because he used the mask to summon the death god. He lost his body like a normal person would when using the jutsu. So maybe he escaped into Zetsu's body with his soul arms repaired, so he can survive again. I think his regular body is destroyed because of the jutsu.
Well, well, well...
Spoiler
Okay, points on the chapter...
1) Yeah, I'll agree with the ***pull on the Uzumaki clan house. There's no way Naruto would have never visited it.
2) Quite a long build up even though the result was good but the whole chapter just dedicated to summoning them... meh.
3) I'm also curious what the four would be able to tell them... Maybe Sasuke just wants to hear about Madara and the Uchiha annihilation. Sasuke probably doesn't know everything we know...
Otherwise... I kind of don't like the idea of Oro coming back as a big player, if that's what it is. But that's probably just me. He got his arms back but he's still years behind the others in strength...
Well, we'll see what the four can do for us.
