That, or he's half-Crescian, half-Shatershanian.

Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
I got behind in the comic, so I reread it from the beginning and I found this page. It looks like Duane had a flashback of his own death right before the guy said, "I have a family." I am impressed by the level of foreshadowing that goes on in the story.

Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
I read some old chapters, too, and just saw that Ssael, the founder of Duane's relgion, was slain by "lions". And the rest of his story is like what happens to Sette, who sees this story while being in the Khert like Ssael. And Sette has features of a lion. I doubt that is by coincidence.
-
Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
"Smell...like I been here before...." There might be something to it. Also, her ability to smell magic implies a special connection to the Khert.

Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
... I'm pretty sure Sette's real mission is to deliver Duane to Stockyard. Tho she likely doesn't know that. As such. Maybe.
-
Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
That's a strong possibility. And I think she really, honestly believes that she's there to squeeze money out of Stockyard. Poor kid.

Could be, but Sette arrived here only tnx to Duane's help. Without him, how can Sette's father think she can return home?

It's kind of implied he doesn't really care about her, that this was a suicide mission. One girl, even with Duane, vs Stockyard's entire operation?
If her father was invested in her survival he could have spared some more muscle.
-
Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
I have a different theory - I think the mission is completely legit (she really is there to squeeze Stockyard) but the reason Sette got pitched against suicidal odds like this is that's how her dad got his start, and now he's putting her through the same psychotic odds he had to overcome at some point in his life.
-
Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
Doesn't fit with Winalis being there when Sette got her mission, even if her father were the type to send a prepubescent girl to deal with a hardened criminal. This has something to do with Duane, most likely. The question is, what's he going to do about it? There's not much chance he buys the story Sette's father fed her. And while abandoning her was out of the question, he also didn't try tremendously hard to talk her out of coming here. So, I believe he has a plan, if only an escape plan, which we are about to see.

Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
Early on, Sette said Nary does not think she is really his. That might be a reason to send her on a suicide mission. However, it could just be sob story she came up with in order to get Duane to sympathize with her. Afterall, several things do not add up.
When Anadyne saw Sette, she implied that Stockyard wants her alive. It seems unlikely that Nary and Stockyard are colluding to send Sette to her death. Either they are not working together, and Stockyard is just bluffing, or Nary does not want her dead. If he does, that was not the purpose of the mission.
If the mission was to deliver Duane, I think Sette was used as bait to entice Duane to travel farther west than he intended to. The physical resemblance to Mikaila along with Nary's extensive knowledge about Duane's background makes it a possibility that Sette was necessary for a plan that involves Duane, rather than the other way around. Since Winalis was the source of information about Duane, it is possible that he sought out Nary to hire Sette in order to deliver Duane. The silver might be Winalis' compensation to Nary for his involvement. Stockyard may be in Cresce as a result of Nary's ambitions regarding the region, and the silver might be a part of his scheme. Afterall, Starfish was Sharteshanian.

Sette is Duane's bait - and Duane for his part keeps Sette alive. I think her ability to travel across the wilderness without a guide, combined with Duane's sappy need to be parent-y, is how the match was made. So Duane follows Sette all the way to Cresce, where Stockyard takes the control amulet Sette wears, and .... I dunno.
Random theory: The first silver weapon eats/destroys/despoils anything alive. Duane happens to not be alive. Duane controls the weapon, and who ever holds the amulet controls Duane.
I'm just making this up as I go along. But it's a possible avenue =D

That's plausible, but I still don't see a father sacrifice his daughter just to send a "weapon" to Stockyard. (it could be, but I would like some real / serious motivation behind such a choice)

Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
They are currently at the Ulestry border. Considering Ulestry does not even have a military, it is plausible their roads are not dangerous, since they do not need one. Keep in mind that Sette avoided the roads, so Duane could not see any landmarks. Sette could probably return home by taking the roads through Ulestry. Also, if we are to assume that Stockyard and Nary work together, then Stockyard could send minions to protect her on her return trip.

For one thing, this web comic is full to the brim with people totally lacking in any sort of morals or other redeeming values. For instance, the ... what, 'parliament' of one nation pretty much jumped on the idea of using the disease that had decimated their own population as a weapon against a neighboring state. For another, Starfish.
But besides that, Sette is not Nary's daughter. Why would she be - do you see any family resemblance? Tails and fangs run in the family?
On top of that ... how is she sacrificed? Used and manipulated, sure. As well as abused and beaten, as we've outright seen. Nary is as low of a human being as the race produces - also, he's not her father, also he's being paid (or otherwise motivated) by Winalis, and I doubt much of anything is going to stop him.
But anyways ... the odds that I just magically guessed everything right are microscopic. I'm most likely wrong on all counts. I'm just looking for a 'worst case' - and assuming that's fairly close to what Ashley has planned. This is not a nice comic about nice people doing nice things, after all =)

Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
What keeps running through my mind is that if Sette has a pymaric to protect her from Duane, other people may also have one... :smalleek:

I'm pretty sure it has Duane's blood in it. Again, that's just something I'm making up, but it would seem to make a sort of sense, right? Anyways, it wont be a common item - but then again, Nary (and/or) Winalis is (are) sure to have one.

I may have forgotten it, but I thought it only worked in his Zombie sleeping form? But I assume it is something personalized and rare.

I cannot really disagree with this.
I'm only waiting for the comic to shread to pieces my feeble convinctions... :smalltongue:

Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
I wouldn't be so sure that Sette isn't Nary's biological daughter. Her abnormal traits might come from her mother. Of course, even if he is her biological father, she'll still be better off if she never sees him again.
Also, unsurprisingly, I'm having a hard time believing Stockyard's sob story. Good thing Sette isn't fooled either.
-
Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
Well, Sette, that was entirely uncalled for. I think his hair is very nice.
-
Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
I read the short story "Interior Emanations" yesterday. Poor Duane, and poor Jessamine. Alderode is a nasty place, and the whole thing puts Duane's decision to teach pymary to Mikaila in a new context.
-
Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
Interesting that their religion believes women are not supposed to learn magic, but Mikaila was born as a tacit caster. I wonder if she genetically inherited from Duane, or if there is something special behind being a tacit caster.
-
Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
Oh, this is gonna be bad. Very bad. I'm sure that if Stockyard new about Duane, he probably also knows that Duane becomes nullified as a threat at night.
""...stay the night," indeed.
ITS A TRAP!

Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
"Adelier, was it?"
I foresee Sette having to somehow rescue Duane from Stockyards control in the near (-ish) future.

Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
Well, this proves again I can rely on the long threads in this forum to point to something good...
...thanks for costing me my entire evening on an archive binge :smallamused:

Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
The situation does have "trap" written all over it. Duane seems to realize it, but he might have trouble convincing Sette at this point.

Eh. it seems that Stockyard won the contest skill "Bluff Vs Sense motive" with Sette...

Re: Unsounded, quite possibly the (2nd) best webcomic I have seen.
HAHAHAHAHAH!!!
Duane is so disgusted/appalled/freaked out that he can't even keep his face on straight.
