Re: Project Tomorrow - A Reassembly Filler Arc
Earlier:
Katie was heading off to bed - well, to find a place to sleep, really - when she got Starsoul's text. She kinda stared at it uncomprehendingly for a few moments, before getting it. Fred had a date, which meant he was, if not over, then at least moving on from Kitty. Which was progress! Good! Tell him to have fun! she texted back.
Then like three seconds later, Wait, this is his phone, he can read it himself.
Have fun on your date!
It didn't...actually enter her mind that Starsoul might be talking about the larger issue.
Some things you just had to see to believe.
Now:
Katie went ahead and knocked on the door. "Hello? Mr. Forst? Are you home?" she called in.
--
Ronin:
Kitty texts back a few minutes later. Now, if there's one thing that has been made clear, it's that Kitty knows Fred pretty darn well. The thing of it is...well, it turns out that text messaging might not be the optimal way to inform people of major outlook changes. Not having been there to see it, and well yes, being rather familiar with Fred's normal approach to things, one could hardly blame Kitty for misinterpreting. After all, she had...well, not so much seen him leave as eventually taken notice that he wasn't present anymore, shortly after Piotr had proposed.
You kinda have to ask yourself what, in Kitty's experience, would be more likely - that Fred had had a major instance of personal growth over the course of like ten minutes, or that Fred had left because he felt like his presence would ruin what was supposed to be a happy moment, then felt guilty about it, and then tried to make a show of support?
You don't have to do that, Fred. I didn't...not answer because of our thing.
Lack of a thing. Whatever. There's more to it. Might be more to it. I don't want to get into it right now, not sure if that dome is scrambling me up. Talk later? I could actually use your advice, if you don't mind.
Kara was getting back roundabout the time your vision ended, shaking her head. Super-speed + X-ray vision was a nice cheat, but truth was, it wasn't perfect when it came to tracking down specific individuals. X-ray vision didn't really give the best view of facial features.
Although, you could have guessed she wouldn't have much luck; according to your vision, both Stitch and Burster were in Magneto's keep. Obviously, that place was going to be lead-shielded; even discounting potential Kryptonian (or Daxamite, or various other people with X-ray vision) spies, Magneto of all people wouldn't skimp on a telepathy shield. So the bad news was, if you wanted to hit them tonight, that would involve a full assault on Magneto's keep, which...even discounting the matter of actually winning, would not exactly have been helpful to your cause from a political standpoint.
The good news was, if you knew where they were sleeping, you knew where they'd be leaving in the morning.
Sarah
Your examination determines that the console requires a password. If an incorrect password is entered, it looks like it will trigger an alarm. That...may or may not actually do anything given how abandoned this place is. This is also fairly old technology, and there is probably a delay before the alarm triggers; a password algorithm that force-feeds it fast enough might be able to get the correct password before the alarm triggers.
The door has a more heavy-duty deterrent vis-a-vis explosive charges in the walls; the Genegeneer clearly didn't want unauthorized people getting in (or maybe out?) of there. Granted explosives only go so far against your defenses, but the real risk is the structural damage, given that this place is half-collapsed already. The door is secured by a fingerprint scanner; given how well-preserved this place is, it's possible that if you stay out of the main chamber and blink around the rest of this place a bit, you might be able to find something that'll do. If you can gain authorization that way the motion sensors shouldn't trouble you.
If you do want to circumvent the door, it looks like the motion sensors are tied to automated weaponry. It's probably a relatively limited threat to you in terms of individual attacks, but just letting guns fire at you while you're trying to explore may be less than ideal, and if these weapons are designed to be capable of dealing with powerful mutants they probably can't be entirely written off even by your defenses. If you could locate the emplacements you could potentially destroy them before they deploy. It also looks like they're designed to cover the floor; if you stayed above the dividing walls, that would keep you out of their line of fire.

Password-spamming the console would be a Mental Quickness check against DC 20, which can't be Routined (representing the fundamental uncertainty of how secure they may have made their password against this form of hack).
Trying to find something that may be holding a preserved fingerprint is a DC 25 Investigation check, which also can't be Routined (since there's every possibility there simply isn't one).
Staying above the guns would either require an appropriate power, or a DC 15 Acrobatics check to balance on the walls. It may also limit how close you can get to stuff, but you can always like blink down to grab something and then teleport back up or whatever.
Alternately, you can still just straight Disable Device these things with DC 35 Technology, come up with some solution of your own, or just laugh in PL 11 and tank/destroy whatever they throw at you.
Gethsemane (and Potence):
After a couple moments, a little slot in the top of the door opened, and a pair of clear blue eyes looked out. The man kinda sniffed a couple times, grumbled, "Mm. One moment," and closed the slot.
The next moment, a trap door opened in the awning over the porch, and down swung a giant sharpened log that would not just collide with terrific force, but might also launch you straight into the river! Even as it did, Forst barreled out the door. He was a stocky, heavily muscled man with kinda wild red hair and beard, dressed in a flanel shirt and jeans - and swinging a holy sword. Time seemed to slow as he raced at Gethsemane, slashing at her a dozen times in an instant.

Katie smiled when the shutter opened...and that smile pretty much immediately went away as a log trap deployed and sent her flying straight into the river. She managed to keep her feet against the current, but it was pretty much all she could do. For all her magical power, Katie was still very much a lightweight physically.
...Although honestly, all her magical power wasn't super helpful here either, because running water grounded her magic. This much water running over her this fast swept away her magic faster than she could pull it up. Even her personal wardings were degrading.

Re: Project Tomorrow - A Reassembly Filler Arc
Kara might have returned in time to watch Fred within his trance. He was still down on one knee, palm pressed against the surface of the rooftop. He heard whispers in his ears, otherworldly and incomprehensible as human language. But those whispers carried power and ancient magic. They showed him secrets. Ronin’s eyes’ colors were muted and were gazing out into nothing. His expression was thoughtful. They were in Magneto’s keep… which was a problem in many ways. It was certainly circumstantial evidence that Magneto knew what they were doing. But when he realized that they were sleeping there, he smiled a slow, dangerous smile.
The hunt isn’t off. It’s only paused.
“Thank you,” he whispered aloud before his senses returned to the now. He lifted his head up to see Kara waiting there. “They’re in bed. In Magneto’s keep. Find a spot near there for a stake-out, I’ll pick up snacks.”
Ronin smiled and walked off of the rooftop, floating down to the ground. He tapped his belt buckle and his costume transformed into his civvies again. He was wearing a black t-shirt with a big gray asterisk in the center ringed by “RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS.” Fred strictly preferred their older songs with the funk feel. He was also wearing jeans and a pair of black/red sneakers. He tucked his sword into his belt and went to make a few stops.
Along the way he checked his phone. He felt bashful about what Starsoul sent Katie. He just replied with a Thanks. I’ll see you tomorrow. Stakeout tonight.
Then he checked Kitty’s response and he didn’t feel any trepidation at all. Which was another realization. He’d spent the last several years of his life dreading the act of talking to people he loves. An hour ago he would have hesitated to even open the message. He shook his head at himself.
More to it? He thought. He wasn’t sure what that could mean… but the ‘planning for all contingencies’ part of him hoped that he hadn’t given false context to his vision of Colossus confronting Magneto. That would be bad. He started anticipating the worst. He definitely needed more backup. If they took out these assassins, he’d bring The Builder along. Never a bad idea to have a regenerator tank a regenerator. And Rene didn’t rely on metal in case Magneto got squirrely.
I’m about to do a stakeout, but I’m a mirror away if you need me. Just let me know.
A pause.
Seriously. I’m good. Assassins won’t be.
Fred then bounced across the city to places that were still open. By the time he was finished, he had gotten takeout from several different places. Two al-pastor burritos (because traditional tacos don’t travel well), four slices of pizza (believe it or not, Go Getters actually had a franchise here), a pair of hot dogs from a late night spot, a few bottles of water, two boba teas, and a pint of Cherry Garcia.
Fred appeared at the stakeout spot through his usual mirror shenanigans, loaded for bear with multiple sacks of food. He gave Kara a smile. “Stakeout snacks.” He sat down with her and started to unpack everything, laying it all out for visual effect. Then, to top it off, he produced a single, sad little candle that he found at the corner store, and set it in the middle. “A light please,” referring to the heat vision. He was putting in effort.

Re: Project Tomorrow - A Reassembly Filler Arc
For Sarah, bypassing the fingerprint scanner seemed like the best option. Staying out of the line of fire for the guns was pretty easy, but it would be inconvenient to have to keep sight lines and fields of fire in mind while she was exploring the lab proper. And as always, the weakest part of any security system was the human element. There was one place that was practically guaranteed to have a preserved fingerprint, and that was the fingerprint scanner itself. Almost no one bothered to wipe the device clean after use, which meant that trace residues could usually be found. Of course, it had been a while since this place was in use - and perhaps the Genegeneer had decent operation security after all.

Rene almost bites his own forked tongue as Rachel misinterprets his intent. At first, his thoughts had to ask, How the hell did she think I wanted to trap my place!? Then, only a moment later, the reptilian realizes that he never really explained what and who he needed it for. Good, great, wonderful start. Rene had forgotten that it is sometimes a very good idea to tell absolutely everything about what you intend to do, especially when you are stuck in a dome of fear and more than a little paranoid.
He retracts his arms to his side, slightly curls up his clawed feet and looks over at the TV she had just been watching. What was Genosha news like? Was she watching about the riots earlier? Did they mention about the people who stopped it? Or were they instead going on about the rampant reptilian who clobbered a couple hundred mutates in a fit of madness? He hasn't watched television in forever; the grand majority of news he's consumed was through newspapers back in Gotham. Whatever Rachel had been watching, it probably wasn't for the best with the dome up.
"N-no, that's not what I mean Ms. Foster," Rene insists, clearing his slithery throat and taking a step back. He briefly wonders if he should have dressed better; his snake-stylized super-suit gives the impression of him as a superhero, but not as a builder. "Lemme explain. Genosha's senate is being targeted and I'm trying to help fortify their safe house. There's going to be people guarding it, but we need more than standard materials and rubble. That's why I came to you." Well, there's the explanation. Rene only has himself to blame if he ended up telling her too much.
He holds back a gulp, something rather harsh on the scales in his throat, and continues to speak. "That's why I came to you. I've used your materials before working with Project Tomorrow. I need them materials to slow down intruders; freeze them, confuse them with ice mirrors, that stuff." "Stuff", good description Rene.

"Please." Rene keeps himself from pleading as his scaly tone nearly breaks into that. "I can pay what's necessary. And I'll take full responsibility for what happens."

Gethsemane's opinion of Forst takes a major downturn when the swinging log bounces off of her carapace. It does not improve with several slashes to her body.
The indigo ring begins to glow red within it's deep twilight radiance. In irritation, Gethsemane forgets to even attempt speech; she simply flies over to where KAtie is trapped under the water and being attacked by Forst, grabs both the young wizard and the paranoid hunter and simply teleports them all away, depositing them in a clearing several miles from Forst's home.

Kara had set up on top of a building not too far from the keep, with a good view of the front and a broad enough roof to provide some cover from the ground (which you guys could get around with X-Ray vision or invisibility). Her face kinda lit up when she saw the pile of junk food you had arrived with. "I love stakeouts," she said with a grin, zapping the candle alight.
Sarah
Your theory proved quite correct; there was clear (to a close enough look, anyway) residue of a print on the device. It was a trivial matter to make use of it for your own purposes; the tech was advanced for its time, and while it was well secured against technological circumvention, it didn't really stand up to modern security theory. In moments, there was a green light and the door opened, giving you access to the labs below.
The Builder
Rachel seemed uncertain for a moment, but she did recognize you from earlier working with the Project, so you had some credibility on the "Superhero; probably knows what he's talking about if he says the Senate's in danger" front. "Alright then. So, I can't actually give them ice exoskeletons; I just generate one around myself. But mirrors and stuff to fortify a building with I've got, and as for traps...I've got some contacts who could get you some fancy stuff. I know a guy in demo who has access to some pretty powerful explosives, I have some good connections in the industrial chemical industry, and of course plenty of like metal and stuff. What sort of traps are you thinking to build?"
Gethsemane (and Potence)
Forst dodged aside from Gethsemane's hand, eluding her touch as she teleported, but at least it got them out of peril, and Katie out of the running water. They appeared in the peaceful clearing a few miles away.
--
Katie stood there for a moment, dripping wet, and then with exaggerated dignity waved a hand and dried herself off. "Thanks," she said, honestly sounding a bit shaken up. That...had been closer than she had liked, and way closer than she had expected. "So...I guess now I know what the Spanish Inquisition was like, or something?" she, well, tried to joke, at least. "Um. So...what's the plan? Should we...try again?" She didn't exactly sound enthused at the idea. "It's just...he doesn't seem very...sociable." Katie was a generous person.

Re: Project Tomorrow - A Reassembly Filler Arc
After eating, they stayed up for a while talking. Fred, for his part, was once again learning to flex his social muscles in a way that didn’t involve preparing for his own demise. Practically speaking, it meant he opened up and caught her up on what his adult life was like… even the parts where he collapses into a heap in the teacher’s lounge after a long night of heroing. He never had a secret identity. Never juggled trying to balance two different lives. But he thinks that he might try to teach again. Maybe start a kendo club for the students.
His well-being for its own sake was still low priority. But Kara with her soon-to-be-legendary way of words, had taken Fred’s own priorities and turned them in on themselves. His number 1 priority would always and forever be helping others. Which means that he needs to be strong… the strongest. But to be the strongest, because he’s powered by hope, he needs to be happy.
Therefore: to help others… he needs to be happy. He needs to help himself. His first priority was now dependent on what had been his last priority.
It was genius, and she may or may not have even known what she was doing. Yet it changed how he was going to approach life.
When it was late, he urged her to get some sleep. He’d take the first watch and they could sleep in shifts. Whenever he was awake to watch, he kept himself perched in the open, invisible, never taking his eyes off the Fortress entrances and exits.

Re: Project Tomorrow - A Reassembly Filler Arc
Before descending into the lab, Sarah sent a message to the rest of the team. "Heading down. It doesn't look like there's anything to block communication, and it's been easy going so far. Once I'm out I'll be ready to assist." And with that, she started down the stairs to the lab proper.
Downstairs, Sarah began a methodical search, looking for the gear she needed. She had a list—there were metals and materials well equipped to channel occult or emotional energies, crystals to serve as resonators, and the like.

Re: Project Tomorrow - A Reassembly Filler Arc
Rene kept himself from giving a smile at Rachel's offer; not entirely a good idea for a lizard to smile with their many sharp teeth under a dome of fear. But it definitely is to hear some good news. All he needs now is to tell her what traps he needs. Traps, traps... This isn't exactly what he trained as a builder for. It's the sort of thing you become a saboteur for.
He'll have a hall of mirrors, if Rachel is correct, but it'll be Sarah, Gethsemane, Katie, and possibly himself defending the senate. Only Rene has to get in close to attack any assassins; the other three can safely cast spells or throw techno-nonsense stuff from a distance. So it's best if some traps can cover a radius when set off... right?
"I'll need something with concussive force," the reptilian responds, trying to sound just a bit more business-like in his scaly tone. "Nothing like shrapnel, if that can be avoided; just something to send them back or knock them out." He thinks briefly. "Oh, and you said industrial-chemical? Do your connections know of coatings that can stick people to walls?"
Concussion-trapped materials, mirrors, sticky walls... This actually might be a bit much. In reality, Rene might only need one of those three traps to set up accommodating defenses. But it's good to know the options, and the cost, for each. Having Rachel's materials at all is better than just working with Genosha rubble.

Re: Project Tomorrow - A Reassembly Filler Arc
Ronin
Kara stayed up talking for a while. Or, well, not talking. Aside from a couple prompting questions, she mainly let you talk. Maybe it came from being a journalist, or maybe it came from just being Kara, but she seemed to have a good sense of when it was time to talk, and when it was time to listen.
The night passed quietly enough between an exchange of watches. There were some donuts waiting when you woke up (X-ray vision was convenient; it let you fly off to a donut shop while still keeping watch). Three of them were already missing from the box. The assassins hadn't gone out during the night, but as the sun started to rise, the odds were they'd start heading out shortly.
Of course, it couldn't be quite that easy.
It was faint, you might not have heard it during a busier time of day. But you could just make out the sound of a scream in the distance. Kara definitely heard it.
"I've got it," she said, taking to the air and shooting off in that direction. It was up to you if you wanted to go and help, or remain at watch.
Sarah
Well compared to the facilities at the Saturn Foundation the labs here were like a high school chemistry department. But it was still a fair sight better than nothing; in relatively short order, you were able to collect a number of materials that would improve the end result of your device. So, time well spent. And your trick with the locks kept any security measures on the place from causing you problems.
As you gathered materials, though, you came to the room that had the still-somehow-living man strapped to the table. He seemed barely able to move even disregarding being strapped down, but his eyes opened and snapped to yours. He didn't speak, but his gaze was pleading.
The Builder
"Yeah I can get you some industrial explosives. I guess you'll want some metal sheeting as well, right?" Neither of you may have strictly been explosives experts, but you knew enough about industrial explosives - there wasn't always a Hulk on hand to handle all of one's building-demolition needs, after all. Industrial explosives tended to be lower-velocity than the military stuff; you'd need some heavy-duty sheeting to shape the charge properly without damaging the building, but against superhumanly-resilient opponents, that would get you the sort of concussive force you needed.
"As for sticking to walls...you know what, I know a guy who does some interesting work with industrial-grade bonding agents. Let me give him a call, he might have something that can do the job."
--
"I don't...really want to just beat him up and take it from him. I mean...I'm not sure it wouldn't kinda be fair's fair after him just attacking us like that but...still," Katie said, frowning. Robbing the guy also wasn't particularly appealing, but she didn't really see how talking was going to get them too far either. Not in anything resembling a reasonable time frame, anyway.
"Hrm. Well, I guess the way I see it we've got two options. We can give up on Forst, get some different components, and just move on, or we can go try to talk to Forst again, and now that we know what to expect, if he attacks us again we stop him from doing that, and then convince him to let us borrow his knife."
"...Or I suppose we can collect the other components, and then if he attacks us again we knock him out, do the ritual, and by the time he wakes up we're gone and his knife is back in his pocket. That seems...fair, right?" It was like...Katie preferred not to settle her problems with violence when she could help it, but if someone was going to just attack them without even trying to talk, well, call it an opportunity to teach them not to do that in the future.

Cautiously, Sarah moved toward the man on the table. "Can you speak?" she asked, as she examined the restraints and the rest of the room carefully. Perhaps the equipment would tell her what sort of procedures the man had undergone.

Re: Project Tomorrow - A Reassembly Filler Arc
Fred woke up in the morning with a stretch of his arms and a yawn. He felt rested. He couldn’t remember the last time he felt rested. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d slept so long. He stared up at the yellow dome above and seemed completely immune to its effects. He pushed himself to sitting upright and turned to notice the donuts. He smiled and thanked her, then grabbed one in each hand and started eating. He didn’t have long to enjoy the morning, though.
The scream made Fred want to tear off in that direction. It was his natural instinct. But Kara said she’s got it. And he’s going to trust her.
So he stayed where he was, watching. Fulfill the mission.

Rene keeps to a small smile across his reptilian snout while listening to Rachel. Mirrors, industrial explosives, metal sheets, sticky materials. It all sounds great. It's everything that Rene needs. He eases out a small, relieved sigh. "Oh, thank you," he says. "This means a lot." The thought of cost and money starts being pushed to the back of his mind. These materials may not come cheap, but there are still lives at stake. He doesn't need to fortify an entire town. And worst comes to worst, he'll... surely find a way to recuperate the costs.
What can't be recuperated is time.
"Do you need someone to get these materials?" Rene asks, curious and willing to help, even as small a task as being a package delivery lizard. "I can go to wherever you can get them from. At... least in the dome." A mild fear breaks over him over his own reminder that he's trapped. No, no, don't think that Rene. Focus on the part he likes: building! "And if there's anything you may need, I can get it for you."
He makes a mental note, he doesn't run at his top speed. He slithers. He could probably move as fast if he ran like a human; it wouldn't be that hard. But his instincts tend to prefer the more reptilian route.

Re: Project Tomorrow - A Reassembly Filler Arc
Sarah
The man opened his mouth to reply, and all that came out was a kinda rasping hiss. He spent several moments trying to swallow, before finally managing to croak out in a faint, hoarse voice, "...Help...please..."
The tech in the room mostly appeared designed for physical and cerebral monitoring, although there were also some electrodes, probes, and other devices that looked rather...less benign. In fact, it looked like the room contained more-or-less everything that would be necessary to give someone a lobotomy, among other rather unethical practices. There was also what looked like a waste bin for biological materials. It was sealed, obviously, but it seemed rather large. Larger than it would need to be for just containing bloodied rags and the like.
Ronin
Your brief glimpse into the future confirmed your choice; you get a brief glimpse of what looks like a small mutate attack. Kara's basically tossing them around like toys. It's like, you could have gone along, sure, but this was pretty clearly not a battle that called for more than one hero.
And if you had, you might have missed the assassins.
They left the keep more-or-less together, but split off into different directions pretty much immediately, moving at superpowered speed, so evidently they had places to be. Still, they weren't so fast that you couldn't keep up with whichever one you wanted.
Call it dealer's choice.
The Builder
"I'm good, thanks. Normally I'd say they'll deliver it, but with how things are out there, they may want you to pick it up. I'll check," she says, taking out a cell phone and heading into another room.
She returned maybe ten minutes later. "Alright, I can put together most of the basic supplies for you, will take me like an hour. The explosives and the adhesives you'll need to get." She gave you a quote that was a bit pricey, but hopefully would be reflected in the quality of the materials, though it might be that you could talk her down some. "If you want to get the trap stuff, I'll have the rest ready for you when you get back. You can pay me then, and them directly; I'll get my cut from them when the deal's confirmed." She handed you a sheet of paper with two addresses on it, along with some directions (albeit, directions better suited to driving than running - slithering, whatever - but they'd do the job). "You can find them there. That all work for you?"
Gethsemane (and Katie)
Well, the good news was getting the other components wasn't actually particularly difficult. A vial of mercury as something of a fallback was easy enough, and the Senators with medals were willing to loan them to you for purposes of keeping them safe. Getting the broken medal from the museum took a bit more doing, but between the two of you it went smoothly enough.
The bad news was that this meant that barely an hour later you were back outside the salt ring marking the perimeter of Moses Forst's domain. All seemed quiet...but then again it had seemed quiet last time.
--
Katie considered. She would really have preferred to get the knife peacefully, if that were possible. At the very least, she didn't want to end up in the river again. Just knocking on the door hadn't been...exactly optimal last time.
Ironically, if she had a thaumaturgic connection to Forst, she could use Shared Awareness to communicate with him telepathically. One of these days she was going to land herself in some sort of thaumaturgic fetch quest chain and she didn't know what she would do. Go to Kayla for help, she supposed. Kayla was good at video games.
"I wonder if his number is in the phone book, or something," she mused, eyeing the log cabin out in the middle of the wilderness. Somehow she doubted it.
"I could...knock from like five hundred feet away with my Helping Hand?" she offered. It was like a plan, anyway! He probably wouldn't have any swinging logs that could knock them into the river positioned five hundred feet away from his front door. ...He probably wouldn't.

Re: Project Tomorrow - A Reassembly Filler Arc
Rene waited those long ten minutes, taking a seat over on a nearby wooden chair that just barely can support his scaly weight without collapsing under it. This sort of waiting was the worst. He can only imagine how busy the other Misfits are. He remembers the days back when he was human, almost an eternity ago, where he was more scared about the negotiation of business rather than the waiting. These ten minutes felt like an hour.
...But then a thought occurred to him; is this how speedsters, whose super-speed can defy their preconceptions of time, feel when they are stuck waiting?
The strange thought grew fleeting when Rachel returned. Rene hops off his seat in anticipation. He looks at the quote and directions, finding his stomach queasy at the bill. He shouldn't have expected anything less. Hell, how was he supposed to imagine otherwise? These materials can't come cheap and Rachel has to run a business. Maybe he can bargain? It'll be a lot of stress for both of them with the fear dome surrounding them. But maybe he can suggest that his construction would help for publicity; or perhaps he can appeal to threat that Genosha's senate is facing; or even begin haggling for a lower price; or-
Indecisive, and doubtful
A stinging moment of recognition passes before the reptilian slowly nods to Rachel. "I can do that," he assures. "That... should be easy enough." He can't call himself a master of navigation. In fact, he's pretty sure that he runs a good chance of getting horribly lost. This is, after all, his first trip to Genosha. He can technically drive, but most of his experience comes from training with Fury. It's not what the reptilian would call driving school.
He makes sure his phone is tightly in his super-suit, as he'll need it to make payments, as he begins walking to the door out. He speaks with a heavy, though professional tone: "I'll try and be back as soon as I can." With that, he closes the door and darts out to the street. He makes like a yellow-green blur as he slithers on his limbs and scales, using Rachel's directions and following the streets to the addresses. All he has to do is pay and then carry the materials back to the safe house. He's done it dozens of times before; how bad could it be?

Re: Project Tomorrow - A Reassembly Filler Arc
Dealer’s Choice, Fred thought to himself as he watched Magneto’s guard exit the fortress and begin to split up. His previous assessment stood. Stitch had more value from a strategic standpoint – just like Katie did with the Misfits or any other group she was with. (Never underestimate the support specialist.) So if he had to pick just one one, he picked her.
"Ready?"
"C'mon. I'm a sword. I was born ready."
Knowing that Kara had the other situation more than handled, Frederick Broll went to work. The best there is at what he does taught Fred to do the same thing. Ronin smiled a Cheshire Grin and faded away, his bright smile the only thing visible before likewise fading.
Then he proceeded to stalk Stitch until she was far enough from the other assassins and preferably away from potential collateral damage. The assassins were more than willing to kill their own citizens after all.

Re: Project Tomorrow - A Reassembly Filler Arc
Gethsemane looks over at Katie, and then... sighs, shaking her head. "Must be growing old," she mutters mostly to herself. "Apologies; obvious safer option available, didn't notice. Could have been more cautious, saved some grief."
Gethsemane's ring and staff begin to glow a deep, pure indigo. A moment later, a thin, translucent dome of Indigo covers Katie and Gethsemane; Gethsemane nods, and they start forwards to the door. Once they reach the door, Gethsemane takes the front this time, lifting up one long-clawed hand and thumping the door heavily.
Hidden underneath the illusion of an empty front lawn, Gethsemane watches the illusory versions of herself and Katie walk to the door, and then looks over at Katie. "Simpler," she says, covering her words with the illusion's heavy knocks on the door.

Gethsemane is using Glamour (sight and sound) to both create an illusion of Gethsemane and Katie walking up to the door and knocking, and to project a flat illusion of Forst's front yard from the perspective of the door in front of the real Gethsemane and Katie to hide them from view.

Re: Project Tomorrow - A Reassembly Filler Arc
Sarah looked over the room and made the rather bloodless calculation that the man on the slab could wait. He'd survived for who-knows-how-long, and he'd likely last a few more minutes while she investigated the biohazard container. Before opening it up, however, she took a moment to jury-rig some protective gear, setting up microportals to shunt away any hazardous materials. Sarah then donned her exo-frame and used its tractor beams to open it up from a distance.

The Builder
Alright, things were moving in the right direction.
. . . eeeeeeeeee . . .
With Rachel's directions, you were able to make your way to the address where you could pick up the explosives. You were met there by a burly man with a black beard and tattoos, who took in your appearance with a look more of curiosity than concern, and invited you inside. Looking like a big humanoid lizard just didn't seem to bother the mutants of Genosha like it did most people. Shortly, he provided you with the explosives, admonishing you to take care. The purchase went smoothly and you were on your way in under ten minutes.
. . . eeeeeeeeee . . .
A short trip to drop them off - carefully - at the Senate building caused, um, a kerfluffle with the guards stationed there. Since, you know, explosives and all. But fortunately the Senators in residence were more-or-less aware of what was going on, and the matter was resolved without any powers getting used or anything.
. . . eeeeeeeeee . . .
The streets remained eerily deserted as you made your way to Rachel's next contact. No cars on the street, no people on the sidewalks...not even some kids looking out the windows. Just the empty, unsettling quiet of desertion. One could imagine the city had been abandoned. But Rachel's contact was waiting for you when you arrived, taking your payment quickly and sending you off with a tub of industrial adhesive.
. . . eeeeeeeeee . . .
One more trip to the Senate building (this time with almost 75% less kerfluffle!) and your trapping materials had been collected. All that was left was to head back to Rachel's to pick up the rest of the supplies and then you could get out of that light and down to build-
. . . eeeeeeeeee . . .
Something is wrong.
. . . eeeeeeeeee . . .
The voice of the Totem sounded in your head with sudden urgency. And...maybe it was just your imagination. Or maybe it was the dome of yellow Lantern light still shining down on you. But it almost...
. . . eeeeeeeeee . . .
Something is coming.
. . . eeeeeeeeee . . .
You could have sworn it sounded...
. . . eeeeeeeeee . . .
We are in danger.
. . . eeeeeeeeee . . .
Afraid.
". . . eeeeeeeeee . . ."
RUN!
"Hello, monster..."
Ronin
You followed Stitch invisibly as she flew through the city on a platform of blue-white light. But something was...off. She took a couple turns, sped up, went higher and lower seemingly at random.
She knew she was being followed.
After several seconds, hovering over an empty road, she turned in your...general direction, a sword and shield of the same blue-white energy conjured to hand. "Alright, out with you then!" she demanded. The shield was starting to glow more brightly.
But you were faster.
Gethsemane (and Katie)
Gethsemane's plan was a good one, covering their presence from the house. It should have sprung whatever trap or ambush may have been set for them.
Except for one minor problem: they were dealing with Moses Forst.
Having chased off his enemies, most people might have hunkered down inside, preparing their defenses. Many might have even come off their guard, after an hour had passed and their enemies hadn't returned. It wasn't like teleporters needed to wait long.
Moses Forst was way too paranoid for that. That would have been doing just what they'd expect! No, Moses Forst went hiding in the forest around his home, and waited with his rifle at the ready.
And waited...
So it was that when Gethsemane crafted her illusion to hide her and Katie from the house's vantage...they weren't hidden at all from Moses's perch in the trees.
BLAM! sounded the retort of Forst's rifle, a ward-piercing slug firing for the back of Katie's head. BLAM! it sounded again, firing a silver bullet blessed to strike unholy foes with deadly force straight for Gethsemane's spine. The bullets would impact with a pulse of disruptive energy, an explosion causing a sudden stillness, as if all the energy in the area - kinetic, magical, electronic, whatever - had suddenly been hedged out.
It was true what Fred said. Moses Forst was just the worst.

With the supplies at hand, it was easy enough to work up some protective gear. The man on the table watched you with a mixture of desperation and uncertainty.
When you looked into the biohazard bin you found...skulls.
That didn't cover it. They weren't, like, full human skulls. And they weren't purely bone, although the scraps of flesh and hair clinging to them had long since rotted. But within the bin was clearly the top halves of something like half a dozen human skulls, surgically removed - as one might to perform brain surgery.

Re: Project Tomorrow - A Reassembly Filler Arc
Moses's antimagic bullets may have been fine for dealing with your average practitioner, but Katie's wards had stood up to Kryptonian-level force and kept on ticking. The mage of the Misfits was no average practitioner. The bullet drained some of their power off, silver runes shining faintly on her skin, but even with her wards still a bit weak from her prior trip in the river, its antimagic charge was expended long before her protective magic was.
Her abjurations held off the worst of the dispelling bursts...but they still slowed her down some.
"Okay, this guy suucks," she complained to Gethsemane. That was actually pretty harsh coming from Katie.
She rather got the sense that being slowed down against Forst was going to be not so good for them, so she hurled her magic outward, a wave of purifying power to counteract his dispelling power even as she summoned up risen shields of silver energy. "Barrier! Counterforce!"

Re: Project Tomorrow - A Reassembly Filler Arc
"All right. A box full of skulls. Very normal. As you still have your head attached and intact, you might be the best chance we have of figuring out why this is here." Sarah's voice, only slightly distorted by the Titanomachy's vocoder, filled the room as she turned back to the man on the slab. "I'm going to let you up, and you're going to tell me what you know. If this turns out to be a trap, I'm going to be very disappointed in you." The portal cutter, unfortunately, wasn't tuned for detail work like cutting through straps and restraints. On the other hand, in her armor, she was capable of lifting an aircraft carrier, so dealing with steel bolts and nylon straps wasn't exactly a challenge. "All right. I'll get you out of here, but first, I want to make sure you're not carrying some genetically engineering plague or brainwashed into trying to kill everyone you see." Before freeing him, Sarah took some time to examine the man, using both her own skill and the improved sensors of the suit.

Re: Project Tomorrow - A Reassembly Filler Arc
Made sense that she could sense life energy or something like that. Ronin was grateful that she’d stopped in a deserted place. He observed the gear she conjured. Sword and board. It spoke to a defensive fighting style. Ronin didn’t come right out of the gate with an attack. He materialized, standing one block away from Stitch. He was dressed in his costume now, full battle gear. His sword was sheathed at his side.
“Here I am. And you’re all alone.”
Fred exploded forward towards Stitch, charging right at her. Mid-charge, he exploded with power, jumping into SSJ2. It sent a booming sound through the empty street. Ronin’s golden aura somehow stood in deep contrast with the yellow light shining down from the dome despite the similar color. His speed and momentum increased wildly, Fred blurring out of view as he moved through, drew and slashed with a quick strike aimed underneath her shield. He continued through, getting distance between himself and her.

Re: Project Tomorrow - A Reassembly Filler Arc
What?
No, no no no. Surely it's a trick of the dome's fear, right?
Rene fixes his eyes still forward into blank nothingness. He knows that voice. But does he? He should, after all. The reptilian's heard it in his sleep since that fateful, horrible day. It keeps squirming in his mind whenever he lets it wander. But whose voice? Well of course there was... several... dozen... at some point. God, who is it?
His scaly body stands still, frozen willingly, or perhaps not willingly at all. Darkness is his ally, until it isn't. And when the dark does not help him, it terrifies him. Something about his cold, reptilian body begins to freeze over. He can barely move his arms. Nothing is stopping him from moving. Nothing is stopping him from running. But why oh why has the Totem, of all beings, warned him that? There's been one, one or two that it has demonstrated utter horror over. And surely that one was locked away with Fury. And not just that, but Rene's in a place surrounded by an inescapable fear dome. It has to be a trick of the mind, a trick of some yellow lantern, a trick of fear.
...
Rene can't turn around.
He's dead the moment he looks behind him.
He can't follow the Totem's advice; since whenever did THAT thing ever give him sound advice? Where can Rene even flee too? All the Misfits are busy with their own tasks; he can't bother them with a mere trick. But he can't turn around. Something, someTHING is behind him... surely, possibly... maybe? Oh god at least be right. He can't exactly flee anywhere, not to where innocent people live; he'd just endanger them. He can contact the Misfits, but as a last resort. He can deal with this himself. It's just behind him... behind him...
...THERE!
His heavy tail sweeps up behind him, attempting to grab... something behind him, wrap it up, and slam it down in front of him!

Given the ambiguity, I thought it'd be fun to play with Rene's mind a bit.

Gethsemane... sighs.
"Apologies," Gethsemane says almost as an aside to Katie, dismissing the illusion with one wave of her right claw. Her left claw comes up, a ball of yellow-tinged black flames slowly growing within it. "Was very much unprepared for obvious response. Should have been paying more attention." "Eh, I didn't think of it either," Katie said. In retrospect, she probably should have. But, like, seriously, who waits around in a tree for an hour just in case people you chased off come back?
As Gethsemane gathered her power, Katie channeled her magic into her, a basic boost to her raw power, while simultaneously surrounding them with another barrier. The man looked physically unharmed, but you could see signs of severe starvation and dehydration, and he was definitely weak; he struggled just to stand unaided, and his balance wavered. Mentally a visual exam could only tell you so much, but he definitely showed signs of moderate disorientation. Still, considering he'd been buried down here strapped to a table for presumably a decade or so, really he was in pretty good shape.
Hope and gratitude lit his features when you freed him and told him you'd get him out of here. "No plague.
