Re: Recaiden's Resplendent and Rotating Realistic Random Banter #136
Well, D&D went all right, I guess.
For those of you who weren't here this morning, it was my first DMing session. No big rules bugs came up, except for every single player playing a class they hadn't before, and not actually knowing the rules. Except one.
And the guy who usually DMs proved that there is a reason he should stick to DMing. He is the most random, challenging, and overall 'No, I want to break the campaign' person I have ever met.
A couple of them got bored halfway through - one of them started reading the PHB (Though probably to get spell descriptions). But I picked it up a bit and I think it got better.
Next week I need to describe stuff more, and not be shy to elaborate on exactly how the scenery was on their 20 minutes trip down the hill. Because otherwise it's 'You go down the hill. At the bottom of the hill...'
They never listen to box text anyway, but I figure they might, if I make it pretty enough.
After this thing, I'm not DMing again though, unless things pick up significantly next session. I'm not born to tell people what to do, and when people challenge me, I get stressed.
And that was perhaps a bit heavy for random banter, but oh well.

Re: Recaiden's Resplendent and Rotating Realistic Random Banter #136
I know exactly how you feel.
I'm not a DM. At all. I lack the capacity to run a campaign as has been proved on a few occasions.
It might have been because I tried to run a Serenity game, and no one knew the rules and just failed to act their parts (why would a ship captain who gets a job by a 'friend in low place' delivering a few boxes of stuff to a remote planet decide that she needs to inspect the shipment, AFTER it had been loaded onto the ship, and then, AFTER having received part o the payment for the delivery, try to extort the recipient of the shipment for about 200% of the agreed upon fee, of which she'd already been paid half??).
But I digress.
Hope things get better for the next session for you.

If you want their attention, start a sentence with shiny or roll your dice behind your dm screen.:smallamused:

I don't use a DM screen :)

The shiftier you look, the more interesting it gets.
But listen not to me! I haven't played in nigh on four-five years.

Depending on how I saw my character, I would totally do this. Get the stuff on board, inspect it to see if it's worth more than my fee, then try to get more of a fee on the back end. Unsavory? Yes. But if we're talking about running illegal products across the galaxy, we're not talking about a goody two shoes anyway.
Lioness - you need a DM screen, and you need to roll the dice behind it for no reason sometimes, then pretend to check a chart or two. Not kidding. Keeps the tension a little bit. Makes people wonder what they're not noticing. I have done this... assign a number to each player, roll a d6 behind the screen, ask the resulting player about a random stat. "*roll* Okay, Borkon, what's your CON?" :smalleek: :smallcool:

Even if it meant that your future working relationship to a reliable source of work would be compromised by trying to extort the end customer?

That might make me hesitate, yes. On the other hand, how many people can the guy who hired me go to? Are we any good at this, possibly affecting our status as "the guys who can do it, no matter what"? I'm just saying that it's not an unthinkable position.

This, this, and this.
Rolling for absolutely no reason at all is one of the best tricks for a DM to use.

Bonus points if you roll more than one die. The clatter of multiple dice on a hard surface is terrifying if you don't know what it's for.

It also helps if you get them to fill out one of those sheets will all their saving throws and skill bonuses on it. That way they know you have everything you need from them, and that when you're rolling, you could be rolling about anything. Watching them trying to guess exactly what you're rolling about is always amusing.

An even more fun way I find is casually asking a player "So... what's your fortitude save?" Then casually roll the dice and mutter "Huh..."

And, more importantly, it keeps them focused on what's going on in the game.

Well, I guess we all have our own priorities... :smalltongue:

Re: Recaiden's Resplendent and Rotating Realistic Random Banter #136
Bear in mind that if you use lots of secret rolls for a group of players who spent lots of time with character creation and background story, you might want to put down some plastic or encourage them to bring a second set of shorts...

At the very least, regulate their Mountain Dew intake.

Re: Recaiden's Resplendent and Rotating Realistic Random Banter #136
Also, when you get a surprise attack on them, when rolling damage for the first time, roll 4-5 dice at once, taking only one into account. Really freaks them out.

Re: Recaiden's Resplendent and Rotating Realistic Random Banter #136
My brothers always want me to DM because they say I'm a really good storyteller so I should be a good DM. And no matter how many times I try to explain that they won't be happy because I'll end up railroading to preserve my story . . . :smalltongue:
Yeah. Good RPer. Not so good DM.
-
Re: Recaiden's Resplendent and Rotating Realistic Random Banter #136
So why haven't you traumatized them just to get 'em to stop asking then?
-
Re: Recaiden's Resplendent and Rotating Realistic Random Banter #136
I've never been great at DMing real campaigns, but I would often sub in for our DM when he got tired of DMing. I run quick 1 or 2 day adventures that are generally completely ridiculous and are entirely designed to both kill all the PCs numerous times while making them laugh their heads off. It's good fun.

Uncle's wife is an aunt. In your case, a half-aunt. Call her Aunt [Name].
A married-into-the-family-Aunt/Uncle's family (for us) normally is Honourary Aunt/Uncle, a cousin, or merely their name.
I'd say go with Uncle.
And for the record my youngest uncle is thirty . . . six I think. Meaning either he was two years old when D (a cousin - I think she's my oldest cousin . . . ) was born or D was two years old when my youngest uncle was born.
Age and family do not matter.

^w^ Soon I'm gonna have to start being called "Granddaddy Trob".
Edit: As for how it is possible...Disney Magic. Yes. :3 By Disney Magic, we are all family! (but not actually married, apparently)
There's a reason for the Family Bramble.
However, in various ways it would get you six great-granddaughters, a great-grandson; twothree grandsons, a grandson-of-association and an exploded brain.

Forgot about that. And crazy is generally more interesting than happy.
Hmmm, I should start learning D&D. Heh, weird.
My brother got D&D Dragonshard for PC for Christmas, and at first he was cranky about it (despite being a big fan of OOTS), but various complaining (and attempted theft of game) got him into it.
I suspect he now knows slightly more about D&D than me.
ION:
Elder Younger Brother got sent home from college today. He does a BTEC or National Diploma - I forget which - and today only four people showed up.
Normally, not so bad, but today was a sports day for all the BTEC groups.
There was nine people in total.
So he got sent home early. He spoke of much cold, glove wearing and a need for hats.
Annnoyingly all the snow seems to stop about forty miles away from home.
Eh. Scotland has it worst, virtually all the schools are closed up there.
And Up North. Train lines are down, cars are dead.
Really, Britland cannot handle snow any more.
I'm waiting for the inevitable nationwide snow day on Friday. It'll be nationwide everywhere except here.

Acknowledging the problem is the first step on the road to recovery. But in this case, perhaps it would be more productive to get out the juicer. :smalltongue:

Every so often someone gets out the bramble and tries to fix it, but I think it's now too complicated to work. :smalltongue:
Also, I still find Tooby the Philanderer hilarious  but we shall save his dignity and say that he has three separately related children by magical means rather than more unfortunate ones. :smallamused:

Get out of bed you wet hen!
Just pile on eleventy billion layers of clothing and then venture out of your lair.
As the scare chrods screech the Unholy Note the huddled, chilly masses below will see your titanic, monstrous form and will shriek in terror and cower before you like the mindless worms that they are!
Then as you open your mouth to feast upon all numbers the ground will shatter and from your footprints will arise a great multitude thereof of demonic mathematicians singing in heretical chorus the forumulae to end all things.
EDIT:
This will also make me very busy.
