In this episode, Pearl and Peridot get into a build off. Building GIANT ROBOTS! It's like something out of Mythbuster so far.
Also, some serious caste issues.

AAaaah that was great.

Cool robot fighting action, the outright saying of what we expected with the whole Gem hierarchy thing (though quite glad to get it out there now), and in the end it seems Peridot has some respect for the other Gems. Exactly as planned by Steven, it seems.

Re: Steven 2niverse: Made of Love
Here's a thought - if gems are purpose-grown, maybe the reason Homeworld hates fusions so much is that they blur caste lines? A Sapphire and a Ruby might have roles, but what does a Garnet do - and is there any other Garnet except the one we know?

That's an incredibly good point.

Yeah, pretty much what everyone already expected about gem roles/castes. I wonder, though. Peridot considered herself above Pearl, but without robots and other accessories, Pearl could hand Peridot's ass to her on a platter. So that means Pearl must have really worked hard on her combat skills. Presumably, a gem weapon can be acquired and doesn't need to be "built" into a gem.

If pearls are mass produced servants/toys/eye candy, maybe Pearl has a weapon becuase she's a custom model?
Hell, considering how devoted she was to Rose, maybe Pearl belonged to Rose at some point?

So...Peridot seems to be developing some respect for the Crystal Gems now. Each episode further increases her chances of aking a proper heel/face turn.
I love it!!
Also, I laughed when she referred to herself as a certified kindergartner.

Re: Steven 2niverse: Made of Love
So are we just ignoring the fact that Peridot's robot was clearly superior, and she only lost due to initial unfamiliarity with tools available?
I mean objectively speaking Pearl is still below her. If your machine can't hack it then you shouldn't be in charge of designing a more important one.

Considering the quote she used when referring to Pearl was "My Pearl" in Pearl's holo memory thing... Which brings up questions.. Does she just keep a mental record on everything?
Anyways.. Loving how adorable Peridot is.

I think that's more of Rose being Rose then anything, but it would mean something, yeah. What I'm wondering is what the other Pearl's look like, and if they have different names.
Same. She is the cutest small green technically evil tech head.

That was wonderful in so many ways. One, I felt Peridot was too Suddenly Nice in the earlier episodes just after her capture. This felt more realistic. Also, it was really neat to see Pearl in action, find out more about Gem castes, and also her fellow Crystal Gems being supportive. Moreover, we find that Homeworld either discarded or never invented the wheel, much like the Martians in War of the Worlds, which makes perfect sense since Gem tech would remove most needs for such.

Peridot's was a stronger combat bot, but the drill's not designed to fight things, it needs to drill stuff.
This also ignores the fact that the contest wasn't supposed to include combat, Peridot just designed hers that way due to her background likely dictating anything she builds will need to be combat ready.
We have no idea what Pearl would have come up with if she knew the robot needed to be combat ready, as is she built hers more for agility, her personal forte.
And besides, they're working together to make the drill, that was the decision Steven reached before they started.
Also you say unfamiliarity with the tools available like its a technicality but isn't that still a serious problem when assigning the lead designer?
If you need a program code on an obscure platform, would you rather assign the job to an absolute expert coder who is largely unfamiliar with the platform and will need to be taught how it works, or do you assign it to someone slightly less skilled in general who is intimately familiar with the platform involved? Or as was eventually reached, they combine their technical skills, allowing Peridot to offer her expertise while Pearl can offer her knowledge of earth technology.

Oh also hey here's a fun thing to note. Last couple of episodes have all been clearly "in an order" for lack of a better term. One leading into the other. So it's clear we're heading up to something big.

Yes, that is true, except that Peridot didn't lose.

Pearl's robot was worse. Many of the competitions were rigged in Pearl's favour (ballet? really).
And consider Pearl's track record - a broken space ship, and a robot disruptor that killed electricity in Beach city, now followed by an inferior robot. She is worse. Peridot won, fair and square , even though Steven stacked the competition (probably towards a tie).
And that was the point. She is respected for her work and for striving, not for succeeding. Determination over talent. She failed, yes, and it doesn't matter.
Heck, I'll even argue that Pearl conceded and accepted Peridot as her superior in all things mad science. I mean, near the end, she took the drill from Peridot's hand, went down on one knee, and offered it back "hilt first" - clearly referencing a knightly vow.

It does make me wonder what the purpose of other Gem types is. What Quartzes, Amethysts, Rubies, Sapphires, Jaspers or Lapis Lazulis are made for. I think it's safe to say that Jaspers are fighters, probably officers. Harder to tell with the other ones.

I'm imagining Quartz gems, like Rose, Amethyst, and Jasper, are meant for various "Soldier" rolls.
Corundum gems, like Ruby and Saphire, might be "casters" Future Vision and elemental power certainly seam magical enough...Though I question where Water Elemental Lapis fits into that...
Maybe some gems, like Pearls and Peridots are deliberately made with a purpose, while others occur "naturally" and have more varied abilities?

Assuming all Gems have the same inborn abilities, the future vision for Sapphire would be more relevant, though cold generation could certainly be useful.
This likely helped Homeworld conquer the other planets. It may have come to bite them in the ass, as, unlike Garnet's version where "There are millions of possibilities for the future, but it's up to you to choose which becomes reality.", Sapphires, "See the path of fate as it stretches toward the horizon."
This kind of prescience can be a trap, as you can't change or steer, only foresee, locked into a single path of inevitability. If the Homeworld Gems started losing, their Sapphires would only see a losing future, unlike Garnet, who retains freewill when using Future Vision.
That would be another reason Homeworld hates fusions. They don't just blur Caste-lines, they also create something new in the synergy. And in as tightly controlled a society as Homeworld seems to be, that's *very* dangerous indeed!

Since Ruby does seem to be quite strong for her size, and seems to have the power-gauntlets that Garnet inherits as a fusion, I could imagine Rubies being footsoldiers as well.

Though with that being said Pearl's had some successes in her track record as well-- Reactivating a broken Flask Robonoid and repairing/jury-rigging Peridot's escape pod as well as fixing Greg's van. At the very least it seems like Pearl is pretty good at picking up on how things work.

I have a sneaking suspicion that 'quartz' doesn't exist as a specific Gem type. Peridot's been able to recognize most of the Gem-types on sight, but she thought that Steven was a quartz (because that's what Jasper called him), and thus a normal Gem born out of a kindergarten, and didn't realize that he was a hybrid at all. If 'Rose Quartz' was a common type of Gem, Peridot would know that Steven wasn't one.
