Re: Report Inappropriate Ads Here
This thread is for reporting banner ads that run at the top of the forum. Sometimes, people buy ads through the Project Wonderful ad network that are not appropriate for this forum—i.e. sex, violence, politics, religion, hate speech, or obvious scams. Since I live in North America and the system runs different ads in other parts of the world, this thread allows people to let me know so I can go to PW and block them.
If you are seeing forum spam, the best thing to do is report it via the triangle-with-exclamation-point button in the lower left corner of each post. Make sure you click on the button where the post itself is, too—not on any other post.

Re: Report Inappropriate Ads Here
1.) Date and time ad was visible:
6:25pm EST, April 30th, 2015
2.) Region (Pick one: USA, Canada, Europe, or Rest of the World):
USA
3.) Location of ad (Top box or bottom box):
Top
4.) Brief description of objectionable content (including a name or other identifying characteristic):
It appears to be an ad for a dating site. Says "Want to meet intelligent men? Educated? Single? Register now!" with a no sign over the word "bimbos."
-
Re: Report Inappropriate Ads Here
What do you see as being objectionable about it? The use of the word "bimbos"? Because just being a dating site is not really enough for me to want to block it.

The word bimbo is potentially insulting to some people, and by definition, an insult. It is basically someone who is "empty-headed" or viewed as a "sex object" as defined by google.
-
Re: Report Inappropriate Ads Here
Fair enough. I'll block the ad.
-
Re: Report Inappropriate Ads Here
Considering the effort to remove gendered insults from the comic, I was expecting an angrier Giant response for that one.
-
Re: Report Inappropriate Ads Here
Given that people have asked for blocks for things as harmless as depicting two people kissing, I need everyone to explain WHY they think an ad is objectionable, no matter how obvious it may seem to them.

Im seeing the ad at 10:36 AM EST, if action ends up being taken, but I don't personally see anything inappropriate about it.

Seconded: I both see it, and unsure what is wrong about a game where you are a democratically elected leader. (By which I mean: if there is something wrong - like "no politics" rule of the forums extending to the advertisements - I'd like to know so I can adjust future reports accordingly).

Re: Report Inappropriate Ads Here
I hadn't clicked it, so I wasn't sure how deeply it got into politics (apparently not at all). Was just bringing it up, figured better safe than sorry.

Re: Report Inappropriate Ads Here
1.) Date and time ad was visible: 12:10 am, July 11, 2015
2.) Region: USA
3.) Location of ad: Top Box
4.) Brief description of objectionable content: An ad for something called "Pop Adopts" advertising a chance to "adopt Miley Cyrus". It has a small, chibi version of a person (who I assume is supposed to be Miley Cyrus) popping out of a human-sized egg wearing no clothes, at least on the upper portion of her body. The eggshell is blocking line of sight to her breasts, but it comes close enough to showing them, and shows enough skin besides that, to take me past my personal level of discomfort; at least part of this discomfort is that the depiction appears less physically developed than a grown women generally is, implying that this depicted character is less than fully developed...which is kinda creeping me out.

Re: Report Inappropriate Ads Here
That sounds pretty awful, but it looks like the bidder has already canceled the bid because I can't see any sign of it. Project Wonderful lets you see bids in four categories: Winning, Outbid (but still active), Paused, and Expired. It doesn't let you see bids that have been canceled, so there's no way for me to track it down and ban the advertiser from ever advertising again. This is, incidentally, my #1 complaint about Project Wonderful; I also can't simply search all PW advertisers looking for them, either.
Anyway, if it appears again, report it again and hopefully I'll be quick enough to block it before it disappears again.
The game in the previous report sounds fine. No action on that one.

That's not Sabine but a character from the advertised webcomic Holy Bibble.
edit for post below: Striking? The only thing they have in common is black hair and a similar skin tone. Sabine doesn't even have horns ...

Really? The resemblance is striking.
-
Re: Report Inappropriate Ads Here
Whether or not it is intended to be Sabine, ads that promote religious-themed content are not welcome here. Advertiser blocked.
EDIT: The same goes for any other content listed under Inappropriate Topics in the Rules of Posting: Political ads, graphic sexuality, criminal activity, etc.
-
Re: Report Inappropriate Ads Here
It's fine. They're not advertising any political aspect here, and politics is not the only possible "international discussion" anyway. I think it's enough of an edge case that it doesn't really cause a problem.

Ad: InWorldz
1.) Date and time ad was visible: 7:29AM PST
2.) Region (Pick one: USA, Canada, Europe, or Rest of the World): Canada
3.) Location of ad (Top box or bottom box): Top Box
4.) Brief description of objectionable content (including a name or other identifying characteristic):
It has a naked woman posed suggestively on top of a naked man.
-
Re: Report Inappropriate Ads Here
Yup, got it. Advertiser blocked.
-
Re: Report Inappropriate Ads Here
Date and time ad was visible: 28 September 2015, 6:21 AM (still up as of this posting)
Region: USA
Location of ad: Top box
Brief description of objectionable content: The ad is for "Free Horror Games", and includes a picture of the Jigsaw mask from the Saw films on the right side of the banner, which I think makes the ad not site-appropriate content.
-
Re: Report Inappropriate Ads Here
On what grounds? Copyright infringement? I don't think Rich is responsible for protecting the Saw franchise.
But seriously, there's nothing in the rules that forbids references to R-rated movies. If there was, I would be banned so hard. If the ad was showing scenes of bloody gore from the movies, sure, but ain't nothing wrong with showing a doll face.

2.) Region (Pick one: USA, Canada, Europe, or Rest of the World): Rest of the World.
3.) Location of ad (Top box or bottom box): Top box.
4.) Brief description of objectionable content (including a name or other identifying characteristic): ad to a site called "bobcat in a box." Ad reads "we run a bot that bids on or purchases items with free shipping - $1 per day.
Sounds like a fishy business to me.

I believe it's an idea from this xkcd strip.
The bobcat seems to be a running gag.

I also got that add, and it does sound rather fishy. It also disappointed me; I was expecting a webcomic, not a semi-scam :smallfrown:

Does not appear to me to be a scam. Or, at least, what they claim to be doing is something that it is entirely plausible someone would do. I admit to not knowing whether they actually provide the advertised service, but the service in question would appear to be entirely reasonable.

Re: Report Inappropriate Ads Here
XKCD readers are known for trying to implement ideas from the comic (geohashing being probably the most popular, there's an incomplete list), and there are several mentions on the web of people recieving their packages via this service.
Almost certainly not a scam, just a crazy idea. :smalltongue:
Bobbybobby - you want XKCD #576 for the original strip
-
Re: Report Inappropriate Ads Here
Does anyone know what it actually, you know, offers? The premise is obviously in imitation of that XKCD strip, but unless theyre, I dunno, selling the program they use or something, the add doesn't make it clear.

Seems pretty clear to me. You sign up and provide money and a shipping address, they run the bot, you get random stuff.

If I understood, they sell the service of using the bot and setting up the deliveries for you (so you pay then and you get the random surprise purchases in your mailbox).
