I agree. We've seen several Mechane crewmen with black skin, but only one with dreadlocks.

Indeed. I support the name change.

Re: Number of Character Appearances V
According to the list Snarl is appeared in five strips, but I only find four. Is that a mistake or did I miss something?

Is that counting his appearance in RC's telling of his side of the story?

Re: Number of Character Appearances V
Just Googled it: #411, Panel 5 was counted as an appearance of the Snarl: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showp...&postcount=137
I'm not sure if it is, though. I assumed it was a magical rune or sigil of some sort.

Do you mean "start of darkness"? Book-only appearances counted in +6.

The same comic says that the Snarl was literally looking over Shojo's shoulder. I say it counts.
-
Re: Number of Character Appearances V
I say it counts as well. There is definitely something there, and if it isn't the snarl, then what else is it?
Also, Wrecan counted it...

Figurative speech is figurative. Yes, I too dislike the use of "literally" to mean "figuratively", but them's the breaks. We have seen what the Snarl looks like, and the squiggle in the middle of the saphire wasn't it - it is a rift.

It's the rift.

This is not an argument.

I must say I agree with Grey Wolf on this one.

Re: Number of Character Appearances V
So do I, especially with the Snarl's absence from the rifts being a plot point.

Re: Number of Character Appearances V
946: Bandana (+1), Belkar Bitterleaf (+1), Blackwing (+1), Durkon Thundershield (as vampire) (as trapped spirit) (+1), Elan (+1), Haley Starshine (+1), Hel (+1), Julio Scoundrél, Mr. Scruffy (+1), Roy Greenhilt (+1), Vaarsuvius (+1)
Should we have a new appearance entry for Durkon's spirit? I added it in case.

Re: Number of Character Appearances V
Neither of them look like previously seen souls. Actually, the redhead bears a startling resemblance to "Kaboom" Redaxe, but there's probably no relation.
...Hopefully, there's no relation. :smalleek:

Re: Number of Character Appearances V
Yeah, I just went back and checked both of Hel's prior appearances. Neither dwarf fits the bill. Wishful thinking on my part.
Edit: I totally didn't forget to add Julio in the first panel. No siree.

Re: Number of Character Appearances V
So... since Durkon's not in control, should we be treating Durkula as a separate entity? (Of course, since he's in the form of Durkon, it would be an appearance for him as well.)

I'd say yes.

Re: Number of Character Appearances V
The trick is figuring out what to name him. "Vampire servant of Hel" is the only option that doesn't really involve silly fan nicknames like "Durkula", "Count Thundershield", or "Durk Malackssen", but it's kinda cumbersome.
Personally, I'd vote for just keeping it as "Durkon Thundershield (as vampire)" until we're given an actual name for the spirit.

"High Priest of Hel", maybe?

As it was an official/capitalized title in the comic, I'd go with this.

Re: Number of Character Appearances V
But should appearances of "High Priest of Hel" also count as appearances for "Durkon Thundershield (as vampire)"? Or only the times when he is shown as a spirit like in 946?

Since he's actively pretending to be the real Durkon, I think past precedent would suggest it counts as an appearance for both of them.
-
Re: Number of Character Appearances V
Thog got appearances added to his count when Tarkie was pretending to be him, so Durkon should keep getting appearances so long as High Priest Of Hel is masquerading as him.
EDIT: Hark, a ninja.
-
Re: Number of Character Appearances V
Also, it's Durkon's body no matter who is controlling it. Even corpses are counted as appearances.

Is the giant dog/wolf there recognizable enough as Garmr? Or is it, as a lot people are saying elsewhere, Fenrir? Anyone have any arguments either way which one this is?

I'd say the evidence looks pretty good for its being Garmr, though Fenrir is better known.

Re: Number of Character Appearances V
Wait, there are multiple named giant wolves of NorseNorthern mythology? How would we tell which is which?

According to the original myth, one is sleeping around the world tree, the other guards Hel. The only reason why not everyone is accepting that that one is Gamr is because Fenrir is the more famous of the two (I myself immediately jumped to the wrong one, actually).
But reading on Gamr, yeah, it's obvious its him. Now, the question is: what the hell are the blue dwarf-giants in the back?
Edit: also, Gamr is a dog, rather than a wolf
