I'd label them just metal. Really not very thrashy.

Amon Amarth cover of SOAD's Aerials.

kinda weird, the song style doesnt fit with Amon Amarth I'd say.
Sig away. :smalltongue:
is it just me or are Pirates in general more likely to have an affinity with metal than pretty much any other awesome historical people group (particularly ninjas)
in other words
is it just me or are pirates the most metal people ever?
Depends entirely on the circumstances :smalltongue:
As I mentioned previously, there are more metal types to sing about, it's just I don't know of any bands besides Ex-Deo doing Rome and I'm yet to hear 18th-19th century done at all (besides Running Wild's admirable, but lone, attempt).
They're pretty good, actually. Almost a bit too derivative of Alice in Chains, but the riffs are good enough for them to pull it off. Nice song structures. The drum production is pretty terrible (bass drums sound like crap), but that's hardly the band's fault. :smalltongue:
i would love to hear some victorianesque symphonic metal
also Moff Chumley that band is pretty cool, they have some cool guitar work
A sideproject of Dragonforce is about ninjas. Shadow Warriors :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rlZLyLwBVQ
Can't watch right now, but I'm guessing its some kind of power metal...
to me this shadow force thing is like running wild with pirate metal
yes the lyrics have to do with the subject (in this case ninjas) but the songs do not capture the feel of sneaking around and stabbing people
its also hard because there are no songs that are considered to be in the 'ninja' style
So I've been working on compiling together a list of these gimmicky and/or epically themed (YMMV) metal bands. I call it Rule666: if it exists, there is a metal subgenre of it. Any assistance in lengthening this list would be greatly appreciated and whenever I make it a last.fm journal entry, credit will go where credit is due.
NOTES:
I excluded Viking, Celt, Satanist, and Lovecraftian bands due to much abundance and general conspicuousness.
Some of it is truly dreadful. Don't be discouraged; there are some gems in here.

I was actually kidding with the ninja metal thing. And Shadow Warriors really sounds a bit more like it would fit within Power Rangers or something.
@eyeofsaulot
Maybe you should expand on the Alien Metal thing and turn it into "sci-fi metal". Because then, we can fit Star One in there.
Still haven't seen the whole list, I'll do it when I have the time. Whalecore made me lol.
How is Electric Wizard not Wizard Metal?
Because their lyrics have nothing to do with wizards, I know, I know. And "occult metal" would be, like, half of all metal bands ever.
You definitely need to add Ex-Deo for Ancient Warriors. I'll let you figure out just which culture they do :smalltongue:
List looks pretty cool, I think I'm gonna go youtube them there cowboys
Dunno if I've already posted this, so here we go:
In Flames vs Soilwork.
Great or REALLY great?
I played this one last weekend when I was DJing in my local club, where both songs are really well liked. Got some puzzled looks, but overall people found it cool.
Also: Had 666 paying customers that evening. "Ultimative MetalMania" rocks :D
How about Gwar for Monster metal?
"Whalecore"
*snrk*
In addition, Iced Earth has an album about horror movie icons
@PsychedelicBard: I fear Sci-Fi might be too broad a theme and cover too many bands. Is there a more specific tag that could be attributed to Star One?
@Klose: The term "Ex Deo" is Greek, right? :smalltongue:
@shiram: GWAR is kinda tough, because they're supposed to be Aliens, but the lyrics also cover things completely unrelated to that. I guess I'll just disregard those. And upon my restructuring, they can be included as monsters AND aliens.
Oh, and I included some Warhammer-themed bands, which is just about the most metal topic a band could write lyrics about.
EDIT: @Marillion: That was a silly oversight on my part.
Fear Factory could fit in with Science-fiction metal as well.
Yeah, I think that's as specific as it gets. They write songs about different sci-fi shows and books (some of them aren't even set in space), so I guess they don't really have a "theme".
NOTE: Not to be confused with space rock.
