Strangely enough, I never noticed that people referred to Varsuvius as simply "V" for ages. has it always been like that, or when did it start? The most obvious things elude me
1) V is refered that way in the comics on occasion
2) Varsuvious is hard to spell
3) V often takes the place of his or her, or his/her, hir, it, or any other eyeball wrenching combination for the elfs gender confusion.

Uh, Fidelity is faithfulness. That’s all. It is not limited to faithfulness in romantic relationships. One can demonstrate faithfulness to a number of different people, organizations, or causes simultaneously. As long as there are no unfortunate conflicts of interest, anyway.
So, yeah, he could have an Oath of Fidelity to his Wife, and Oath of Fidelity to his Church, and an Oath of Fidelity to his Country. As long as he is never forced to pick one of those over the other, this guy can keep them all.

Maybe, but I still think it's a subtle joke. He has the Oath of Fealty for those other situations.

I'm pretty sure Basooned was talking about in-comic characters when he said "people", not posters on this forum.
I mean, this IS a thread about things we'd never noticed in the comic, right? Or can I point out that I'd only recently noticed the little stone-carvings on my neighbour's porch? :smalltongue:

Re: Things you never noticed
Elan references 300 during the battle.

But all the conversation in-comic is text based, so there's still the problems with the hard-to-spell name and the eyeball wrenching gender neutral pronouns.

How are they problems? I don't find Vaarsuvius difficult to spell, so I'd hazard a guess that Rich doesn't either. And no one in the comic has ever used "V" as a substitute for a pronoun, only as shorthand for the name. When it comes to pronouns, characters stick to he, she and it. We haven't seen a single instance of "zie" or "xir" in-comic, and I'm pretty sure it's gonna stay that way.

Re: Things you never noticed
I used to be puzzled by why Belkar was put in solitary confinement. I've only just realized what the remark about "emotional distress" means. It's because Belkar insisted on a separate room at the inn due to emotional distress.

Not to be pedantic, but a pronoun is a shorthand for a name.

Could he not, technically, have an three Oath of Fidelities to the same person, as well? E.g. "I will be faithful to you while we're dating" would need to be updated to "I'll be faithful to you while we're married," so that would be two right there.
But that's not as funny has him having three to different people.
(And I never noticed that either!)

I find V's name hard to spell.... even though I've read it hundreds of times. I have a lot of problems spelling words with vowels next to them. So their often comes out as thier for me (for example). In fact, I do this kind of thing so often, I've set auto correct options in word to fix them :-) I'm sure most other people don't find it hard to spell, but I do.

Though I can't think of any time in an online strip that anyone refers to him as "V", I think Haley does so in "On the Origin of PCs"

In the bar, when V is explaining about how he blew up the Iron Mage arena by mistake, Haley says to him "Tough Break V". I don't have the book with me right now, so I can't check the page number.

"V" is an abbreviation and nickname for a specific individual, Vaarsuvius the elven wizard.

That's not actually a substitute for a pronoun so much as a name--but, except for very rare exceptions, if you replace a pronoun with a name, the sentence is still correct. So it's hard to tell whether it's substituting for the name or the pronoun.
The first use of V is actually a variation, where Roy calls him V-man. This was early in the comic, perhaps even before Rich decided to make Vaarsuvius's gender ambiguous, and thus serves as a hint as to V's originally intended sex (though not, however, a hint to his actual sex in the continuity--what Rich actually intended and what's currently considered canon are different things).
As for examples of V by itself:
The earliest use I saw, by Roy
By Haley
By Haley
My impression is that "V" is generally used by Haley and Roy. I don't recall any instances of Elan, Durkon, or Belkar using it, though I could be wrong.
EDIT: Oops, an example of Elan using it, so I guess that's done.
