Whenever I have to make a critical die roll I usually fail... Laws of drama lose against the laws of probability in reality. Most of the time, anyway.
Thanks. ^_^ I am pretty proud of my ability to set up encounters where my players escape by the skin of their teeth. But to be honest, I like to fudge circumstances to dramatic effects.
The important part of fudging is not to just handwave the consequences of fudging. Make it part of your story, make it part of the universe. Make it REAL. Players don't feel cheated by something real.

Re: Darths and Droids III: Search Your DNA Report
This DM is amazing. He essentially tricked Corey into using Force Manipulation, in such a way that a) Corey isn't aware of it in or out of character, and b) It saves the entire adventure. Once he realizes it in character, he'll be much happier about using it. (Once he realizes it out of character, that depends on how much he likes the DM at that point).

Re: Darths and Droids III: Search Your DNA Report
I was hoping for a "Use the Force, Corey" line from Ben out of character--that somehow turns out to be in-character!--but this was a good way to resolve it. I always thought in the film it looked like the torpedoes suddenly dropped downward into the shaft right at the last moment, as if they were... guided by some... force. Hmm.

Weren't they guided missiles?

The suspense...

At least I wasn't a **** THAT WAY to my players

Re: Darths and Droids III: Search Your DNA Report
I dunno, I would have started feeling sheer terror the second the dm said, "Leeeets just stay in combat rounds for a minute." Its less about dragging it out and more about, "Oh crap, he has some sort of timed event taking place and we just launched explosives into the death star. There is no way this can be good."

Should the DM just randomly roll dice while the players wait, just to make them nervous?

There are two answers to that. Yes, and hell yes! Heh, in all honesty, it depends on the type of players you have, it could be amusing, or it could cause the game to grind to a halt as the now insanely paranoid gamers start testing everything in their backpacks, their immediate environment, and scan each other for curses and whatnot that have a random chance to trigger, etc.

Rolling random dice is always a good way to excite your players.
And in all honesty, in this situation they should be nervous. Either their plan failed or they are just about to be way too close to a way too big and way too explosive thing.

One problem with using screen caps. In the last shot, they have an extra fighter showing, because the movie has three surviving snubs, not two.

Isn't that standard operating procedure? :smalltongue:

And Jim's campaign was Airplane. There is no doubt about it.

Was there ever much doubt?

There was a little. The early hints that were dropped were very subtle. But "Stop calling me Shirley" is a dead giveaway.

Re: Darths and Droids III: Search Your DNA Report
I did a reread of the archives, and just realized something. Has anyone else noticed that it's been four major campaign arcs and no one has yet referred to the GM by name?

It's been noticed, yes.

Everyone Calls Him GM.

It was more glaring in DM of the Rings. At least here people don't try to talk about him in the third person and get stuck saying "the DM" over and over.

Re: Darths and Droids III: Search Your DNA Report
Maybe the GM is also named Jim, and the group uses "GM" to avoid confusion?
I've been Tom S. in a group with a friend named Tom W. before. They called me Thomas and him Tom, since Tom S. flows into Thomas more easily.

My favorite solution to the names issue is "I know too many Matts already, you are now Dan."
