Oh, I'm wandering on, you know me. Real life's just another fish for me to spear with my harpoon...
And you, how's Oxonian-holiday life goin'? Back up in October?
And yes, absinthe sweeties are foul.

Yup. Five more weeks of holidays - more or less - and then it's off to use my brain again. So boring, and I've only iust translated one-fifth of one thing I've got to translate.
Haven't even started the rest of my holiday work yet. As usual with any type of coursework, I'll be working my balls off in the last week before I go back.

I seriously need to get any info from my uni about reading lists etc. But they've been not very forthcoming with sending me letters etc.
Then again, my father's mental state isn't great, and it's possible he's just misplaced my post...

Re: Masa's Massively Masterful Message Medium - Random Banter #146
Absinthe is very nice.
You just need to be not-stupid enough to drink it in significant quantities.

It won't have come yet.
You were officially accepted three days ago; it'll take about a week to get it.
Or, at least, that's what my timetable was.
If you haven't received it by mid-next week, start worrying.

I know of no one who actually needed to do reading assigned before they started uni. Anything which you actually need to read you can read when you get there.

Man, I read at roughly the speed of light (surrender now or prepare to fight) but I'll ahve roughly a month to do an entire reading list!?
-
Re: Masa's Massively Masterful Message Medium - Random Banter #146
No, don't. You can always catch up once you're there (unless everything is super fast tracked like Oxford and Cambridge with their super short terms)
Silly Phaedra and her saying things faster and better than me.

As Phae and Bath said, Oxbridge isn't normal - and even then most people only got through about half of the reading list and read the rest as they went along.
Iust read what you can. ANd be thankful you don't have essays due in during your first week.
If it helps, my Oxbridge reading list was only three pages long, and you do not have to read everything on it anyway.

I tried an aniseed ball once. As I recall, initially I thought it was OK, but after a little while it became a bit :smallyuk:

As far as I'm concerned, any quantity of absinthe is significant. On my housemate's younger brother's 18th birthday, Housemate borrowed a small amount of absinthe to be shared between him, his elder brother and me. I inhaled in the vicinity of the glass, then immediately and vehemently refused it.

Don't worry about it =). If anything - you can catch up while your there or pick up the lists later on. You have got ages (well, just over a month) before you *need* stuff. Also bear in mind the reading list a) doesn't always give you all you need and b) is all well and good but wasn't all used.
At least for me, my first Semester went over alot of stuff previously done while doing it in the university layout.
Then again, I did physics. You course may be different.

I's doing English, the noblest of all of the arts.
I'm gonna need a lot of reading done, I fear.

Re: Masa's Massively Masterful Message Medium - Random Banter #146
Hey look, I'm back from the dead.
Er, the busy. I FINISHED MY REGENCY COSTUME! But I don't have a picture of the full regalia. I have some of my underwear though (tee hee):
And just the dress without any of the proper underpinnings because it was eleven PM when I finished it and I didn't want to take the 15-20 minutes to get it all on properly. The lines just aren't right though, because it was cut and measured for a corseted and petticoated figure.
And that is, alas, all. My dad's on a three-day hike and took the camera so I can't model the whole thing for you and therefore the silhouette of the dress is wrong in the above picture. But oh well.
Also: Yes, this isn't the YOU thread. But I don't check the YOU thread. So I'm posting them here instead of there.
Edit: YES. It's the cheesy Myspace pictures-in-the-mirror thing. I'll have to get someone to take a full-length when I get the whole ensemble.
Also, I watched the Emma Thompson Sense & Sensibility movie last night and was very pleased to note that all the gowns in it are put together along the same lines as mine (seams in the same places, although none of them appear to lace up the back the way this does). I'm pretty sure the Keira Knightley Pride & Prejudice didn't do quite as good a job achieving the proper silhouette, but maybe that's just because their actresses are ridiculously thin.

Pretty DeeRee in gorgeous Regency clothing is beautiful.
Can't wait to see full length pictures for the proper impact.
Never seen the Sense and Sensibility film, but I think the clothing accuracy in Pride and Preiudice was better than some I've seen.
Neither of them are my favourite books by her of course, but they're good anyway.

Yeah, I just looked at some pictures online, and I think that it IS pretty good, except Keira Knightley has no figure and therefore doesn't pull off the look so well (by period standards; by modern standards she looks too thin and therefore, I suppose, "pulls off" looking good since the supposed standard is "too thin").
But yes, it's certainly better than many. Though the Sense & Sensibility really is quite excellent. In many ways. IMHO. But I adore Emma Thompson so there's your reason right there.

Keira Knightly is literally Magrat from Discworld, Magrat is described as having a chest like an ironing board with two peas on it.
That is Keira Knightley to a tee.
She has no boobies at all.
She looks okay, features-wise, I grant you, but when I look at her I see the figure of a ten year old boy. Too thin.
Not really a good look for Lizzie Bennet; her hair was very nice though.

I cannot for the life of me see miss Knightly shooting an elf in the face with a crossbow in the armour of queen Ynci.

Never actually seen the new Pride & Preiudice film, but I'm pretty sure if I did I would find I liked it less than the old BBC version. 'Cause that was a good version. Jennifer Ehle looked the part more than Keira Knightley in my opinion.

I want to see another The Importance Of Being Earnest which is to my mind one of the best plays ever.

Well, both really. One of my best friends is a member of the Jane Austen Society of North America, and they hold an annual Regency ball in some city. It's in Portland, Oregon this October. My friend lives in Portland. Can you see where this is going?
Tickets were expensive but it'll be a fun weekend with my friend, and I got to make (and wear) a pretty dress. Plus have a fancy dinner and go to a ball, even if I probably won't dance.

It's weird . . . I hold strong dislike for Keira Knightley, and yet I've liked almost every movie I've seen her in to some extent, Pride & Prejudice included. And I did like the BBC version of P&P as much, though I've only seen it once, but I'm one of those few women who just doesn't see what's so great about Colin Firth. I sort of like Matthew Mcfadyen better. But like Koorli, it's not my favorite Jane Austen.

I don't so much get the 'OMG Colin Firth is teh hotzors!!!' thing, but he does some good acting.
