She weighs the options presented for some time before typing her response.
Yamamoto Sayuri: Can you pass my request to your Captain? My Division's leadership is still in chaos, with loss of both Yasunobus and then Mike. :-( Vern's busy fixing the railgun after Commander's last stunt. ~_~
--Yeah we know it's been super-rough for you guys over there. :-( :-( :-( I think everyone took Mike's loss really hard, with how it went down.--
There's a pause of a few minutes.
--The Captain is asleep right now. He's scheduled to be available for meetings in about two hours, and we made sure there's a "convenient" block of time for you. ;-)
Not that many people seem to want to meet with many of us if it's not about us killing something or drinking a bar out of business. ~_~ :-(
He's probably pretty wiped from that epic spar he had with the Commander yesterday.--
Wait, how do they know what Masaru and Koutarou did, and how do they know it was epic?
-
Re: [BiTPR2] Renewed Revolution: Spirit World IV
Sayuri has no idea. She's too fixated on her own mystery plot to pay much attention to that last remark. As far as she knows, "epic sparring" is what Masaru does every Tuesday.
Yamamoto Sayuri: Okay. I'll come to visit you guys in two hours. :-)
Sayuri looks away from her computer and at her coffee mug. It probably would be smart to eat some actual breakfast with this sludge, wouldn't it? So she fetches a bagel from the community fridge and wolfs it up, then takes a shower, brushes her teeth and switches to a clean uniform. With one hour left to the meeting, she looks at a mirror and gives herself a thumbs up. Then she checks out of her quarters and walks briskly towards Combat Division through the cool morning air. She is at the reception five minutes early.
... and dozes off while waiting for her appointment.
-
Re: [BiTPR2] Renewed Revolution: Spirit World IV
[Seireitei, Soul Society]
[Captain's Office, Combat Division]
Sayuri likely found the office waiting area neat, clean, and efficient, a bit better than under the previous leader. On her way in she would have passed a large area that served as the semi-formal memorial to fallen members of The Pack, with both official plaques (picture, name, rank, etc.), and various tokens and the like scattered along one side of a hallway. A solemn reminder of the cost of what the Spear Of Soul Society pays to keep said Society safe.
About 5 minutes after the scheduled appointment start time, she will likely be awakened by a polite cough. If she awakens to that, she will see Captain Masaru standing in the small receiving/reception room, holding two steaming mugs (one generic white, the other a bit more fanciful and colorful, featuring several dragons on it). He's dressed in his full regalia, including not only his Captain's haori but his own starry garment over it, and his straw hat. He bears a gentle smile on his face, and a twinkle in his eyes.
"Here, I had some of my special blend made for you. Should help you stay up for a few hours at least. I hear tell you've got some...interesting...questions?"
-
Re: [BiTPR2] Renewed Revolution: Spirit World IV
Sayuri opens her eyes lazily after hearing the cough, then jumps up from her seat startled, her freckled cheeks turning beet red. She gives Masaru a deep bow, before noticing the mugs. "Oh, that's sweet", she mumbles absent-mindedly and takes the offered drink. Then she suddenly bows again, almost spilling it. "I-I mean, thank you, Hiraku-taichou."
Awkward.
It takes Sayuri a few seconds to collect herself and get to answering the question: "Yes, you are correct. Specifically, I want a transcript or recording of what the famous crime boss, Shen Yi said at the gates before his exile. I had misfortune of being at the railgun station when the Hollows attacked and they said some really odd things. Commander-General hypothesised they were gunning for the Soul King's palace, but... I don't know, it's hard to describe. Obviously they failed what they were trying to do, but I have this haunting feeling we're not seeing the big picture. I wasn't present at the gates when Yi was exiled, so I've only heard rumours. I can't confirm if these things are related without help."
-

[Captain's Office, Combat Division]
Masaru gives Sayuri a smile, apparently not really registering the "sweet" comment. Maybe he's just clueless like that.
"You are welcome, Yamamoto-san."
Friendly and respectful!
As they sit and sip their tea and she explains her purpose, Masaru becomes pensive. He begins typing, and also talking, after a few moments.
"I recall the incident in question. Shen Yi was...a unique individual."
Loads of meaning there.
"Koutarou made a very solid transcript. He's always had an excellent memory, and with the assistance of others present there, we compiled a fairly thorough picture, really. Such as it is. Here, I've isolated the relevant sections."
He hands over a fairly high-tech tablet computer with a fair bit of text on it.

Just assume he gives her a transcript of the posts in question.
He leans back in his seat.
"Honestly it tells us very little. Shen Yi references the power and esoteric nature of the Royal Guard, but those are already-known facts, as much as such things can be know. Beyond that, it's all vague allusions and the like."
-
Re: [BiTPR2] Renewed Revolution: Spirit World IV
Sayuri scrolls the text back and forth. "Yes, but why would some crime boss from far Rukon know about, much less care about, the Royal Guard? It seems like an incredibly distant... wait, there it is!"
Sayuri paints the portion of text that piqued her curiosity so Masaru knows what she's talking about. "There he says 'I was taught in the Royal realm'. And there he expresses he 'doesn't want to meet the Royal Guard again'. Implying he has lived in the Royal realm!"
Gears turn in Sayuri's head and her face pales. "Captain? How much do we know of Shen Yi's life before he became a criminal? Is it even theoretically honest these claims were honest?"

Having checked the Registry, there's not much more info on Shen Yi's history there, so with Razade having decided not to continue actively playing, I'm going to do just a touch of speculation here.
Masaru shifts a bit, one hand idly tapping his own keyboard as he speaks.
"We do have some other records. However."
He stops typing, and levels his gaze at Sayuri. His eyes are as sharp as the swords currently resting on the display rack over to one side, though not cruel. His gaze "merely" pins Sayuri in place, giving her the impression he is about to teach more than warn.
"This is sensitive information. Not to simply be spread around in the throes of panic. While I understand the recent shifts of Soul Society's location are distressing, and these Hollow attacks more so, these Hollows are not all-powerful or all-knowing. Them finding out about the Soul King can be explained by a combination of people talking, and the fact that the King's existence is no secret. The King being an important part of the metaphysics of existence isn't really a secret, either. So these Hollows likely gained somewhat-commonly-available information, and took their warped insanity and applied it to said facts and information. Please keep that perspective in mind before thinking that what we go over today proves some sort of unstoppable conspiracy on their part."
Assuming Sayuri doesn't decide she doesn't want to know classified information, Masaru continues.
"Shen Yi was an apprentice, one of many over the course of Soul Society's existence, to the member of the Royal Guard who helped initially forge Zanpakutou in the form we know them today. Shen Yi held the title of "Demon Smith", likely due to a combination of this apprenticeship, his...volatile nature, and the rather potent nature of his own sword's release.
I will again stress that Shen Yi was an apprentice. Not the Master. This is not to disparage his skill, but rather make clear that he would not have been privy to as many secrets as a full member of the Royal Guard. Further, Shen Yi's presence in Soul Society, life of crime, and apparent antagonistic relationship with the Royal Guard suggests banishment. I am not privy to the Guard's methods and secrets, but I would wager they have means of ensuring such an exile could never return on their own to the Realm of the Spirit King, assuming they ever could make the journey on their own in the first place. Frankly, we have no evidence that any but the actual members of the Royal Guard are able to make the journey unassisted. Further, I would speculate they have their own esoteric methods of protecting secrets. It may be that Shen Yi remembers being part of the Royal Guard, and remembers having an antagonistic relationships with them, but does not remember all of the specifics. After all, we of Soul Society possess the means to clear the memory of mortals. Who is to say the Royal Guard do not possess something of their own for situations such as this?"
-
Re: [BiTPR2] Renewed Revolution: Spirit World IV

Shen Yi's time in the Royal Realm is detailed in a couple of flashbacks Razade wrote. One of them is on page 41, IIRC, of the last Spirit World threat. Nothing Masaru says here contradicts those. Though, since this is information neither our character can know for fact, it wouldn't matter if he did; speculation is the point here, both IC and OOC.
Sayuri looks wide-eyed at Masaru as he explains this. She was well-aware she might end up looking for information above her rank and paygrade. For now, her concern for the safety of Soul Society trumps worries about getting to know something she's not supposed to.
What Masaru says makes a lot of sense. But as she goes over it in her head, it finally clicks in her head why this has been troubling her mind. And why Masaru, like Koutarou before him, cannot possibly shake off her doubts.
"Yes, but who is to say they do, Hiraku-taichou?", Sayuri says, looking sad and horrified. "That's the problem here. We do not know. Our whole system of governance is founded on the existence of the Soul King, but we know next to nothing about what goes on in his Realm. And... this guy." Sayuri points at Shen Yi's name on the tablet. "He might have been our last and only way to check and we let him go."
Feeling weak, Sayuri sits down and sips her drink. She keeps going through motions a while after her mug is empty. Then she just stares at its bottom.

Masaru keeps calm as Sayuri's imagination runs wild.
"Who is to say they do or don't? I suppose all we have is our speculation and common sense, Sayuri-san. As for the Soul King..."
His voice drops in volume a bit, and he seems to speak gently for a few moments.
"As far as I am concerned, the Soul King should be treated as a figurehead, a "head of state", to use a mortal term. On a day to day basis we govern ourselves as best we can. Becoming over-worried about how distant the King is won't help us. I would implore you that, at least in that respect, you help yourself step back, breath, and take in the overall state of things in Soul Society. Which is much better than it could have been."
His voice then hardened.
"Shen Yi showed himself to have utter disdain for anyone not himself and his cronies. We could not trust him. Had I had my way we would have turned him and his scum followers to ash on the wind. I would not have trusted his word on anything but the broadest of details. He would likely have tried to deceive you, deceive us, then slit our throats. He blackmailed his way out of Soul Society with the lives of innocent Pluses. I personally hope his soul enters Hell for a few centuries, but sadly we don't always get what we want. I don't necessarily agree with Koutarou's decision, but I understand why he made it. We need to recoup our strength."
He has a hard look in his eyes. But as he speaks, the look softens to one of concern.
"We can do what we can to watch for these ****ed Hollows, and perhaps see if someone in SSI or the like knows how to contact the Royal Guard, just to ensure it's possible.
But you yourself need to calm down and center yourself, Yamamoto-san. I worry you will worry yourself to ruination, Sayuri-chan."
-
Re: [BiTPR2] Renewed Revolution: Spirit World IV
Sayuri looks at Masaru. She is mildly surprised by his indignation towards this criminal. But there are more pressing concerns here. "Ask someone in SSI to see if the King can be contacted? Hiraku-taichou, I'm from the SSI, and that possibility is exactly what I'm trying to ascertain", she says with an anquished voice. "As far as I know, I'm the only one who even considers this important. Me and the Commander, we talked about the walls. They're normally meant to be up there guarding the King's palace. But since our land was displaced, we do not know if they can return. There. One layer of defense that should be in place, but is not."
Sayuri shifts her mug from hand to hand restlessly. She doesn't look at Masaru. "The Commander said we can't afford to test it right now. He may be right. And then he did much like you did now, tried to assure me there is only a tiny chance it actually matters."
"But it's not helpful at all. Not reassuring at all. Not when so much of it is based on just good faith. And it's not just that we don't know..."
Sayuri looks up with a haunted look in her eyes. "We 'couldn't stop this from happening'. According to Shen Yi, in the eyes of Royal Realm this mean we're 'partly to blame'. Because we failed." Sayuri bows down her head and shuffles her feet nervously. "Hiraku-taichou. This is an ugly question and I understand if you don't want to answer it, but... how do you think our current situation would look to the King or the Royal Guard?"
-
Re: [BiTPR2] Renewed Revolution: Spirit World IV
[Seireitei, Soul Society]
[Captain's Office, Combat Division]
Masaru sighs, closes his eyes, and rubs the bridge of his nose.
"I'd like to think that the King and/or the Royal Guard would actually be more understanding than a clearly sociopathic, violent piece-of-scum criminal who pleasured in making money off of the misery and suffering of others. We managed to prevent a lot of damage, we've quickly adapted Soul Society's landscape to our current situation, and we did all of that on the fly with the warning of, what, a couple of hours, from a situation we never knew about in the first place.
If previous Commander-Generals purposefully hid information from the rest of us, if the Royal Guard purposefully didn't tell us that Soul Society was actually suck in the bowls of the plane-corpse of Izanami, and that at any moment we were in danger of being **** out like last night's bad curry, all thanks to a super-powerful being sealed away by them and also not told to us until things started to break down at various hidden and "forgotten" prisons across the Mortal World, then I'm not sure why it's so much our "fault" we couldn't perfectly prevent what happened."
He's clearly agitated, but not really at Sayuri.
"Shen Yi can cast blame all he likes, but everything I've seen and read about him suggests large amounts of emotional and mental dysfunction when it comes to areas of empathy, sympathy, responsibility, and so forth. I don't know for sure how blame-happy the Royal Guard would be, but I'm reluctant to take the word of a violent criminal they exiled from their own ranks as rock-solid truth for much of anything.
As for testing the walls, we may need to test it soon. I cannot make that decision; it is up to Koutarou, or possibly even Central 46. I recognize this is very worrisome, because the unknown is worrisome. But we cannot allow fear to rule and control us, Sayuri-chan.
It's not that this isn't important, but our options for response are limited, and we have a great number of immediate crises on our hands. Perhaps if we could go more than a few days without some random attack or attacks upon Soul Society we would be able to collect ourselves and ascertain the truth for sure."
-
Re: [BiTPR2] Renewed Revolution: Spirit World IV
Sayuri blinks. "Wait, go back... what was that about Soul Society having been inside Izanami's corpse? Why would've that been a problem?"
-
Re: [BiTPR2] Renewed Revolution: Spirit World IV
[Seireitei, Soul Society]
[Captain's Office, Combat Division]
Masaru thought it was at least semi-common knowledge among the officers, and likely most of the research-types (including Sayuri), of the Gotei by this point.
"Yes, that was apparently our previous planar location. And while there are likely debates regarding this, I consider our change in venue ultimately positive. I know Momoka-sensei agrees.
Really, there are two main reasons I consider "living in the belly of the corpse of Izanami" a "problem".
For one, there's no guarantee that the...decay...process might not have hit a point the entire...structure...was at risk of collapse. Or even that said process might start spawning Hollow-like nightmare-horrors that would steadily increase their attacks on Soul Society, something that's decidedly unneeded right now.
And for the other, there's no guarantee, with a being such as Izanami, who even in death had enough soul and mind left to form a hideously powerful Shinigami-like being, that she couldn't end up being less than dead. Which might lead to...digestion. Or something worse.
Frankly, to me there are too many dangerous unpredictable if we'd remained where we were, never mind that we had basically no choice on the matter."
-
Re: [BiTPR2] Renewed Revolution: Spirit World IV
It might not be a secret, but it's not common knowledge either. Though not having heard of this is not the only reason Sayuri is confused. "Ummm... who is your source on this?", Sayuri asks.
-
Re: [BiTPR2] Renewed Revolution: Spirit World IV
[Seireitei, Soul Society]
[Captain's Office, Combat Division]
"My primary source is Kobayashi Momoka, who is one of Soul Society's experts on a fair number of subjects. She reported independent confirmation of our previous state, at least partially due to having unfortunately lingered in the area Soul Society had occupied after we were...ejected. As I understand it the Commander-General has had verification from other sources, but I do not have the list in front of me.
Now, you may dispute the claims of Kobayashi Momoka, but I will not sit in defense by proxy, as these matters relate to her own observations and research. She is a reliable source, as confirmed not only by my personal trust placed in her, but also the trust of the Central 46, who saw fit to not only lift any lingering sentencing upon her, but also to instate her as an officer in your own Division."
-
Re: [BiTPR2] Renewed Revolution: Spirit World IV
"I ask because I was assistant to Mikoto Kokugen and Naganori Igarashi after Zheng Li Lin gave an order to investigate possibility of moving Seireitei, or even whole Soul Society, to a higher dimension", Sayuri explains. "So it's not like I object, in principle, to moving Soul Society. It's just... we were strictly doing it in case the treaty with Arrancars failed."
She puts her mug down on a nearby, empty chair. "Part of that involved mapping topology of Soul Society and measuring its exact dimensions. So I can say with confidence that if Soul Society was eroding, it was doing so at such a low rate we would've been finished by the time it'd become a problem, and would've been able to move to a different place at our own leisure. Actually, you can sort of take Kobayashi-san's feat as proof of that, because I'm fairly sure her spell was based on the work we started."
Sayuri thinks.
"Considering Izanami-no-Mikoto only betrayed us after the Cult had already become a problem and re-established contact with her, and that we succesfully made peace with Arrancars... I guess what I'm trying to say that the problem was never our physical location. It was always the Hollow King and licentious actions of his followers. Sorry for the tangent."
-
Re: [BiTPR2] Renewed Revolution: Spirit World IV
[Seireitei, Soul Society]
[Captain's Office, Combat Division]
"My opinion, and this is my personal opinion and view rather than an official statement, is that the former location of Soul Society was held as a secret. The initiative by Former Commander Zheng Li Lin was perhaps spurred by holding this somewhat secret knowledge. I do not know.
Perhaps it was simply luck and fate that the initiative and the research existed such that it could be used to save us.
We can disagree on the long-term problems of our location, I believe they may ultimately prove philosophical. Now."
He settles back in his chair a bit, somewhat calmer, but still finding this whole discussion...odd.
"Did you have any other questions, inquiries, or worries? If not, might I suggest you attempt to get together with Kobayashi Momoka upon her return to Soul Society, along with the other members of the SSI and other groups that may have knowledge and interest in dimensional Kido and the like, and work with all of them to come to a solution for your concerns with the Walls, the Realm of the Soul King, and so on?"
-
Re: [BiTPR2] Renewed Revolution: Spirit World IV
"That sounds like a good idea, yes", Sayuri says, sounding a bit happier than before. "I still have a few questions. I apologize if these fall outside your expertise or if it is classified information, but... who were those Hollows? Who let them in and why? One moment I was just performing routine maintenance and then BOOM, an emergency. How did this situation get started?"
---
[East Gate Hospital]
New day, new problems. One of the nurses is on her way to check on Ryouma again. On the way, she sees some nervous guards whispering to each other.
Topic of the day is "Stumpy", the dismembered Hollow Ryouma insisted on hauling here. It's freaky enough to have a human-shaped thing hanging from chains in the storage like a frozen carcass, it's even freakier when said carcass is a living monster who'd ordinarily be a threat to all of the hospital staff. Koutarou and Masaru might be able to fight off Hollows without injury; rank and file of Medicine & Logistics, not so much.
They're basically wondering when someone from Internal Security will deign to show up to move it far away from them, and how they'll break to Ryouma he's not allowed to keep his "pet". Because the violent giant is just as bad, in his own way.

Masaru sighs at the topic, but presses on.
"They seemed to be all one entity, actually. Or a hive mind. I'm...look, I'm not stupid but I don't study science, I can't explain the exact mechanics. Pretty sure we took samples-"
Live prisoners.
"-so for the biological stuff, that's where you'd need to go. They came in as one being, and I believe the original Arrancar wasn't attacked because it claimed some relationship with Las Noches, and/or because our current stance is not "kill Arrancar on sight". That's why they weren't burnt to ashes on sight. Now, as for how the emergency itself came about, that's harder for me to answer. We would need to reconstruct the chain of events with the assistance of the Commander-General and other officers who interacted with this Arrancar, this hive-Hollow, before the criminal attack.
They "why"...seems to be more of an issue of "because". It was difficult to discern true motives beyond "because", at least with the aspects of the Hive-mind that I fought."

Re: [BiTPR2] Renewed Revolution: Spirit World IV
"That's bizarre", Sayuri blurts, looking at Masaru in wide-eyed wonder. She's a cosmologist, not a biologist, and the concept of a hivemind is just as freaky to her as to Masaru. "Ah, sorry for that. "Bizzare, yes. No need to apologize; it's definitely abnormal even in Hollows. As for the number of members, or how many may exist, I don't have those answers. Internal Security may get some answers from any live prisoners taken, and the Shinigami Science Institute and Engineering Division may be able to help determine that from a scientific standpoint. Anyone involved in initial encounters with this collection of Hollows might have at least a number estimate. I can only tell you how many I fought, killed, and/or encountered personally, Sayuri-chan."
He's definitely friendly but probably not picking up on any unintentional subtext or the like from using that particular honorific. But it'll be fine, no chance for misunderstandings here.

I know that some people stick around after dying for whatever reason. If a ghost doesn't pass on, it'll eventually turn into a horrific soul eating monster. If a pregnant woman survives being attack by one, the baby'll have powers, but that's not the only way for a human to have special powers.
I know there are supposed to be spirits whose job is to destroy the monsters and purify them and the souls they've consumed, but a while ago they just stopped doing their job for some reason. They need to get back to work, I think. I don't think it's normal for one human to fight five hollows in one month.

Masaru looks thoughtful at the question.
"Hm."
He sips his tea for a moment.
"I personally took out first a group of five in the forest around the Hill-"
Easy to hear the capital "H", and know which one he means.
"-then encountered another 5 at one of the gates, which soon drew another 20. This fight took some time, and to my shame I allowed my pride and willful blindness to leave me in a situation where my Division had to assist me against the last few of the opponents after they temporarily trapped me in some barriers. I probably took about 15 or 16 of that group out, I think? My Division provided assistance, as I said."
He gets up and moves to a nearby counter where a steaming tea pot is sitting, his own mug in his hand.
"Another group of perhaps 5 were encountered after that when I went to assist Vice-Captain Arianna, but only a couple of them were taken down, the others pulled back if I recall correctly. Would you like some more tea?"
He has poured himself a cup and turned to Sayuri with an innocently questioning look on his face.

Due to a truce struck between Las Noches and the Soul Society, we have taken control of hunting Hollows once they have fully turned. We simply take them here instead of killing them. "Yes. Internal Security and Command both received the fullest report I could give, with all observations about behavior, capabilities, and so on. SSI should have been flagged a notice regarding some of the items in that report, centered on the odd biology and the like, but I'm sure they've got a sample or two to work on, and such things might have gotten shuffled around a bit. Trust me, Sayuri-chan, I took this incident very seriously, as did Koutarou. We talked out any frustrations we had before he left for the Mortal World."

"That's good to hear", Sayuri notes, sipping her tea. Her informant did mention the epic fight or epicness, but her mind's still too full to make the connection. "I think that's all of my questions for now. I have a much better idea where to look, and what for. I will have to make a formal request for investigating the possibility of contacting the Royal Guard. Thank you for your time." Sayuri slowly finishes her beverage while waiting for a permission to leave.
