Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
I certainly noticed all that when grinding Punchy McStonefist. "Does your character live in America? Is he from an anime? Does he have blue hair?
... He wouldn't happen to be a dwarf, by any chance?"
OH SNAP
Thing is. Every single one of those pointless questions is cutting out HUGE SWATHES of potentials from the database....

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
I'm finding it easy to defeat. I'm currently introducing it to the characters from Descent and the Road to Legend expansion.
-
Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
It's also easy to defeat using real people, if you really want to.

Yes, because there is nothing potentially good to derail here. Instead, you should wait with perverse glee to see if it gets even more asinine. (It obviously can, but we're running out of time.) :smallamused:

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
The fun isn't in defeating Akinator with an obscure reference, it's choosing a reference that by all rights should be obscure but you know damn well will be well represented and seeing how quick Akinator finds it.
Try "Magical Trevor" for example.

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
I'm actually working on increasing it's knowledge of boardgames at the moment. Once I'm done with that, I may move on to (all of the) characters from the Wheel of Time.
I've also been surprised at what it fails to guess. I thought that Mac from I'm a Mac an I'm a PC was going to be easy for it to guess, but that turned out to be a defeat.

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
Tried to get Siggy on that thing, ran into Inigo Montoya. Later he asked if my character had a mustache, which I thought was hilarious.
Edit: Also, after I defeated him, I noticed that Szark Sturtz (who is not gay) is on the list.

Heh. I'm not sure if it still has "Fangly" in there - I think it rejected my attempt to submit a picture.
-
Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
Okay, the question he asked right before he got to, "Dominic Deegan," was, "Is your character a puppet manipulator." :smallamused:

I couldn't even figure out how to attempt to do that for PuncyPunchy. :/

Try again! You may be pleasantly surprised. :smallwink:

I've been trying to teach it Snuggly.

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
So I just started reading this comic a few days ago and have progressed through several years now. Since I am usually oblivious to when a comic "goes bad", when is it supposedly doing that (or rather, did that)?
-
Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
Just keep going and let us know when you think it turns sour... Much more fun that way :)
There isn't realy any exact moment when DD switches to something which must be snarked at to be enjoyed, or from that point to being awful beyond amusement. It's more of a gradual decline, and your own standards will determine whereabouts on that long and dismal slope that you draw the line.
That said, if you make it to the end of Maltak without sensing that something has gone wrong, you are either a: utterly bereft of sense, or b: Mookie.
These are not mutually exclusive.

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
Some people would say the comic went downhill right when the fish stopped falling and Luna became a regular. These people are objectively right.
However, the comic's worst points came a few years later. Out of interest, where exactly are you now?

This is the truth. However it usually takes a few more arcs to realise that the only rule of the comic is that it does whatever it wants and to hell with the plot and the characters.
It gradually and constantly goes downhill, but there are peak points where something particularly odious happens and large groups of readers switch off or over to snarking. The major speed bumps are located at about Sin City, Battle for Barthis, and Snowsong - then at least one every arc after that.
-
Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
For me, it was Class Action, because of this.
I mean, I actually started reading the comic with the intention to snark, but this is one of the - thankfully relatively sparse - moments that actually made me angry despite that.

Hmm, Manly Guys doing Manly Things has commented on the undeveloped art style of Mookie: http://thepunchlineismachismo.com/archives/657

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
Wow. Akinator got the transcendent one from Planescape Torment after 30. Must say I find it amusing he can get Magical Trevor in 20. Am currently trying to teach him some WHFB characters amidst laughing at the things he says about Warlord mustache.
EDIT: and he went for the Orc from LFG when I was thinking Melna.
-
Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
Hahahah I tried looking for something non-Dominic Deegan related and got Dominic! ...geez :smalleek:
-
Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
Akinator couldn't guess Lexington from Gargoyles with me. Altho he gave me a whole bunch of weird monster characters, lol. I thought he would have figured it out when he asked if the character had wings.

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
Heh, just for fun I ran with sakura from naruto in there. It zeroed in really fast. Is it in an anime? Does she have pink hair? Is she a fighter? Then suddenly it went off on some insane tangent, not even touching on the few other pink haired fighters I knew about. 6 questions later, bang, sakura. Funny thing is, i dont recall any questions that disqualified yachiru.
-
Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
It's interesting to pick a really obvious character and see how fast it can guess it. My record is 12 questions for the Weighted Companion Cube.
I also had to laugh when it asked me if the Lady of Pain is a god/goddess. We all know the correct answer (NO! NO! SHE IS NOT A GOD! NEVER SAY THAT SHE IS A GOD IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE AND SANITY!), but I still had to laugh about it.
Also, it's getting closer to accepting Snuggly. Snuggly is now on the list of possible answers. I need to give it a picture. Probably the lower right image here, where it's being so adorable and huggy. I'm just not sure what to do with the word balloons.

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
Really says something for the current plot that people are more interested in using this thread to discuss Akinator than Dominic Deegan
-
Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
There's a plot? I thought Mookie had stopped pretending that anything happens for any reason besides "it sounded interesting to Mookie in isolation".

To be fair, it's a slow weekend. And since the last Cute Critter Picture Weekend ended in scandal... :smalltongue:

Oh, don't remind me, I felt like--
And, yeah, weekend. If we are to keep this on topic, somebody better tell Mookie to bring back the splash pages. I kinda miss 'em...
-
Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
Heh. Well, there's an idea! Get the Akinator to guess which is the cute critter we thought about.
I do miss the Superfluous Super Sunday Splash pages, too... they had pretty crayons and amazing silliness.

Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
There isn't much to talk about during the week when the comic is updating. I get the feeling everyone is hanging around purely in morbid fascination about whether we really are going to get a series of wedding planning arcs.
-
Re: Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire, Mk. XXXIII: DeeganBallZ
Apparently, Akinator was unfamiliar (completely unfamiliar) with the exploits of Dr. Tinycat.
It guessed Monorail Cat, then Ceiling Cat, then Serious Cat. Dr. Tinycat wasn't even in the list.
