Which one do you consider not godawful? I'm curious.
On a similar note, who is the greatest rapper alive? I hear that title thrown around a lot, I'm curious about y'all's opinions.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
inb4 earl.
Y'all know I'm gonna say Aesop Rock. I really don't listen to a ton of hip hop so I can't make a particularly educated claim, but Aes is hard to beat. Can't wait for his new album.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Alright guys. You all seem pretty savvy of the music world so I submit to you a request for a name of a song. Here is the song and if you're interested in quirky math facts then you will enjoy the video too.

Dr. Dre is actually pretty decent.
-
Re: Can we just do another music thread?
On the rapper bit, I'm digging Scarface and Pharoahe Monch. I don't know if I would call them the greatest alive since I'm so ignorant to the genre but I'll give them their good tunes.

Decent, yes, but no better. Even Snoop's better than Dre, and I'm hardly a huge Snoop fan. Someone like Mos Def blows 'em out of the water.

Tupa- ... Ol' Dirty Ba- ... Notoriou- ... Grym Rea- ...Eaz- ... Adam Ya-
DAMMIT! /poortaste
But seriously, in terms of flow and lyrical quality/cleverness and subject matter, I'm agreeing with Moff: Aesop Rock wins. My favorite group is Dälek, though, who stand as the only hip-hop band that has collaborated with a krautrock band.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Rappers I like: Aesop Rock is at the top. dalek are up there. K-os is really good music, but rap-wise not so up there. Del the Funkee Homosapien is good as well.
I'd honestly have to give it to Aesop Rock.

I love this forum.
Also, Mission of Burma. Goddam, what a band.

Yes, Mos Def is good. I disagree about Snoop being better than Dre.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
I strongly dislike Snoop's voice. Anything he does ends up sounding puerile and silly to me, no matter what. I can't take it seriously.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Bumping.
Pantomime Horse, by Suede, is my theme song.
"I would die for the stars, she said"
Also, jdfask;ldhfs;agdas;fasj;kgf Suede live concert video I NEED THIS WHERE CAN I GET THIS
Can I just travel back in time to the early 90s? PLEEEAAAAASE. Brett Anderson in '93 is kinda the sexiest thing I've ever seen.

Ah, Moondog, you can soothe a stressed soul.

Sleep in peace when day is done, that's what I mean.
On another note, such classics are great to dance to (even if it would be inhumane to whitstand 9 minutes of quickstep).

RIP Donna Summer (1948-2012).
Let's all listen to Hot Stuff in her memory.

Anachronistic as it may be, Donna Summers was a huge part of my childhood, thanks to my mom. She's gonna be devastated.
-
Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Aye, my family already did the Donna Summers retrospective today.

That's the unfortunate problem with time - it passes away and sweeps people away.
I got to know her thanks to Thank God It's Friday and I'm very glad I did. Full version of Love To Love You Baby is breathtaking and it pointed me toward Gorgio Moroder.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
Dunno if anyone here has heard of Joel Tenenbaum, a 28-year-old student who was condemned to a fine of $675,000 for illegally downloading 30 songs... That's over $22,500 per song.
Now, I'm well aware that the music industry needs to protect its interests, and that they must sometimes set an example. But this is ridiculous. How can they possibly expect a student to cough up that kind of money? He might as well have bought the rights for all these songs.

Nas. I'm usually not one for ranking artists like that, but he's my favorite living rapper. Of course, if hip hop itself is dead, why limit ourselves to the living? :smalltongue: On a semi-related note, hard bop hip hop is the best musical genre name.

Oh man, Polyphonic Spree is still just... I cannot believe how amazingly emotionally catastrophic their music is. I just cannot parse how devastating it is, and yet how uplifting.

Re: Can we just do another music thread?
I like metal. Pretty much all of it...except for nu-metal (mallcore)
I really love Mastodon, Symphony x, Gojira, Children of Bodom, High on Fire, Helloween, Megadeth, System of a Down, Between the Buried and Me, Isis, Dream Theater, Baroness, Warbringer, Wolfmother, Testament...that kinda stuff.
Would love recommendations for other bands that fit in my tastes...
