like i just said, not every magic item re-sizes.
even if this helmet does, it could easily be a case of it re-sizing to fit a small creature, but because of his big ears, his head isn't appropriately small-sized.

Magic items that resize do so to fit the wearer. If somebody has an abnormally large or oddly shaped head, it should still fit them. The only reasons it shouldn't fit is if the prospective wearer was already wearing some other object in the same slot, or if they lacked the body part its supposed to equip on entirely.
okay, so the helmet just doesn't change size then. simple as that.
Regardless of what the rules are for magic items or why the author chose to make the rules what they are - I'm having a lot of trouble caring about what just happened. I mean, this was an important part of the story, right? People have been theorizing about Kore for years. Fourteen years? And all of a sudden we finally get some answers dropped on us in the form of random exposition from a ghost that appeared one page ago. Exposition from a ghost that was provided to the story by the villain to provide a distraction so that he could escape. To create yet another pause in the fight that's been going on for... 5 years? 10?. Oh, and by the way - Ears is maimed now. Just thought we'd cram that into this page as well.
It just feels so... weird. Like the story and comic crawl, not just because of the slow updates but because of the dedication to dragging things out, and then when something finally does happen it happens in the most haphazard manner. I like the story, I like some of the characters, but I just feel like I'm consuming for resolution at this point. A part of me feels like this may have been the most important page in years and yet I can't bring myself to care.
We have already seen MANY examples of magic gear not resizing to fit. Names wearing arm guards on his legs for example being the more recent one. If there is any resizing going on at all its probably going to be subtle, like, lets say you wear size 46 mens pants. If they were magic they might swing up or down by a few sizes but a guy who needs 16 slims isnt going to wear them as anything but a full body suit. Or shoes might go up or down between 9-11 but that toddler isnt going to put them on and have a well fit pair of shoes. Nor will shaq. Or rings resize themselves but thats a fairly small adjustment in size really. Basically, its a ballpark adjustment. If you are close they fit, but there are limits.
whatever, it’s entirely within character of the author that Big Ears only got big ears in order to have to cut them off at this point.
That ... was the point I was making.
Okay, ripping his head open didn't kill him. Now we're just getting an explanation of how he's able to do what he's able to do.
But that's ultimately irrelevant. They already knew he's powerful, and, now, they also know he's essentially unkillable as things are.
So ... what makes him so? Curse by the demons? The souls bound to him give him life?
They need to free the souls. What binds them? What breaks the bonds?
Also, cutting his head off. Would he be able to regen / reconnect to his body, or would that just make it easier to cart him around so that, when the time comes, they have a helpless Kore to dispatch?
He's leaving, going to heal up, re-equip, and now knows what the GAP is capable of.
He is in the middle of a dungeon, missing half his skull, 2/3 of his gear, and hasnt stopped to regain spells since he took a rope to the neck. If he gets away its unlikely he will come back any time soon as I doubt he keeps caches of gear stockpiled outside random dungeons. If he DID run off to do all that stuff the gobs would likely have solved the issue with the axe by then and be another few levels before he gets back to them, at which point they wouldnt need the golem macguffin to do damage to kore. (and not basically die in a single shot each)
Plus Kore got lucky that Min"I can trade blows with Balors and walk away on my own feet"Max was separated from the gobs. And Kin.
Next time it may be Kore vs Gobs+Lamia wizard+OP Fighter/barbarian with Oblivion sword and that's not gonna be pretty.
In the other hand we have a magic axe that comes with a free fullplate that sizes itself automatically and perfectly to the wielder and even easily converts to light armor or back if they prefer it.
The shield of wonder could also grant a size-fitting armor (although that one also had a chance to kill the wearer).
nobody ever said "Magic items do not resize in this setting".
what's being said is "Not EVERY magic item resizes".
The Axe is a notable resizing weapon, as we have multiple instances on record of it changing size and even shape to fit it's wielder.
We do not have that same track record for the arm-armor or the golem helmet however.
Sadly have to agree with this. After all the mystery surrounding Kore and the nature of his abilities, we get a weird, unsatisfying explanation out of the blue from a Chief that Kore inexplicably decided to summon. To escape I guess? And nobody notices their mortal enemy slinking away in plain sight?
The predictable and plain presentation of Big Ears cutting off his ears is pretty rough. The dialogue feels unpolished too, though that might be because of the space taken up by the explanation of Kore's powers. I admittedly haven't reread large portions of the comic in a while and I've been reading since childhood, so I could be a little nostalgic. Even then, this kind of story development isn't of the quality I expect from Goblins.
I still have confidence in Thunt to pump out great pages and resolve this plot well, but I was kind of surprised because I don't remember the last time a page disappointed me. Here's looking forward to whatever comes next.
I have questions concerning the eyes of Ears and how blood flows around them. Maybe the helmet he was wearing made the blood pool instead of flow and then it took odd paths?
Now the-artist-formerly-known-as Big Ears is going to gain Dragonborn powers.
Nah, he's just going to become twice the artist Vincent van Gogh ever was.
What I don't get, if this helmet can't be resized, what is a helmet designed for small creatures doing in a dungeon? No GM would put a small sized helmet that no one in an adventuring party could use. If anything, the thing should be too big for them. We know Thunt has made playable versions of his dungeon before, I bet the helmet would be ready to fit normal sized characters in that sort of event.
Later generations will ask why the legendary Artist-Paladin calls himself Big Ears and think it's a joke when the only reply they get is "I needed to fit a magic helmet".
What's a D&D party whitout a gnome/halflingor gob? Even in the original Hobbit the starting plot is "can't go in a dungeon adventure whitout a small sized character".
Although this would still be a pretty d**** move in a real game since it wasn't even because of the size of the character but just for something that should be pure flavour description and have no mechanics effect.
PC: "Ok, my time to put on the magic helmet!
DM:" It doesn't fit."
PC: "Why doesn't it fit? Everybody else in the party is the same race as I and it fit for them!"
DM: "Yeah but your character has 'big nose' on their name so that gets in the way nyar nyar"
PC: "(censored)"
Remider it's the same DM that drops items such as the Shield of Wonder on lv.1 parties.
Yes. Yes, you are. :smalltongue:
Seriously though, while I don't always customize my loot to my party, I frequently do. Useless treasure is useless, unless you have some way of transforming it (via selling, barter, or magical shenanigans) into something useful.
When she originally came out as trans, she said she wasn't renouncing the name "Thunt" for the time being, but it did seem like a temporary thing. Her twitter account changed from Thunt_Goblins to Ellipsis_Goblins a few weeks later. Honestly I don't think she'd be offended if people still call her Thunt online from time to time out of habit. But it's a different thing if people use the old name out of malice.
Back on topic, perhaps the golem control helmet can resize down but never up? :smalltongue:
Furthermore, who creates a magic item that works for 24 seconds and then ceases to be useful forever? And who then puts it in an otherwise featureless underground room? I've been thinking about this on and off for weeks, but I fail to come up with a single use for this golem/helmet combination that couldn't be served longer and more consistently with spells of much lower level than are required to create it.
A cruel GM with no interest in playing fair?Quote:

I fully expect the next room to have a trap or other issue designed specifically to be bypassed by the golem, meaning if you pulled a vorpal and played around with the amusing toy, you are in trouble. Not impossible to bypass, but probably way harder than it needs to be.
Dungeons in the Goblins universe are pretty clearly designed to be "video gamey" in that theyre explicitly there to provide interesting and/or unusual challenges to adventurers rather than to serve some practical purpose. To that end, a dungeon gimmick created specifically to be a dungeon gimmick isn't that odd. What is odd is that they then apparently neglected to make it actually able to function as a dungeon gimmick for non-humans. Even among the classic PC races, not everybody has the same head shape or size.
Ok, I missed something.
Why did Big Ears lose his ears?
Was the Golem Control Helmet trapped?
He couldn't fit the helmet over his ears, so he had to cut them off.
Just imagine how cool and moving of a moment this would be for the comic and character if it wasn't already considered par for the course going into it. Like, if Roy had to permanently maim himself in OoTs to save the day it would be huge. Instead we just sort of expect people to maim themselves to be able to wear a hat.
