Re: [Nexus] Temples of Dalachrech I
Inside Temple of Dalachrech
Tovpi appears to be confused. Why should the death of anyone be included? Well maybe just a mistake. As the alter your size thing came up he makes a few steps back.
"No, no, no, no ,no. I'm fine with the size I am."
He will then come in. He is able to go through normal doors without breaking anything.

Re: [Nexus] Temples of Dalachrech I
Inside Temple of Dalachrech
((I thought Tovpir was larger than that; and the bit about Narahar's death was 'how unlikely is it that the person whom you met is the person I'm going out with- quite likely because it's just me, Gertrude and him at the moment' thing.))
"OK then, please follow me." Jorje will open the door and let Tovpir in, showing him a rather small foyer with five drapes hiding doors; one of the drapes is pushed aside and the door beyond opened as Jorje enters the altar room.
Also, I forgot this earlier, but Jorje's eyes have been surgically replaced with large compound eyes like those of a fly.

Re: [Nexus] Temples of Dalachrech I
Inside Temple of Dalachrech
((I still don#t get that thing.. Think there is something missing in my translation case it makes no sense. As for the size Tovpir is able to pass doors by lowering the tail and holding the claws together, just nothing you want to do the whole time. And still shrinking is for Tovpir simular to torture for a normal human. Just nothing you want.^^))
Tovpir follows him. And the eye thing is really something that would bother him. Since he met many humans this is new.
"If he is a gnome... what are you? Yu have the size of a human, but your eyes look strange."

:smalleek: Now that's just harsh! Then again, as both parties entangled in the killing matured with a drow upbringing, there's no telling what the betrayal entailed without further exploration into the topic.

"Of course. My home at the time was deeper than this; there was a population of drow nearby with plenty of males. To see sun or 'rain', I had to travel several miles upwards. To find a male to sleep with I had to travel half a mile through passages impassable to creatures unable to walk on the walls or ceiling and often magically disguised by myself or other drider in the area." Charynrae has lived down here for her whole life; of course she's known how and where to find men longer than how and where to find the sun or rain.

"Oh, I'm human. I just had somebody change my eyes as an act of devotion to Dalachrech. Now my eyes are like His, and the eyes of His thri-kreen worshippers, too." "Ssso, what're they like? Drow, I mean."
Sylvia hasn't ever heard very much about the drow culture, and since her girlfriend was formerly a drow, she thinks it in her best interests to absorb as much as she can about it now rather than later.
Sylvia moves to seat herself on a nearby object, if one is to be had.
"I know all about dwarvesss! Are drow like dwarvesss? They both live underground!"

Re: [Nexus] Temples of Dalachrech I
Underside Temple
"No, they aren't like dwarfs. Drow aren't great builders, or skilled metallurgists. Millennia ago, one of the Seldarine- that is, the Elven gods, was corrupted by evil. She rebelled against Her pantheon, leading Her sons and daughter into darkness with Her. The war amongst the Elves lasted for hundreds of years, but eventually the corrupted Seldarine deities lost, banished to the Planes of the Fiends, known as the Lower Planes, and their followers were cursed with black skin, red eyes, and white hair before being driven underground. Driving dwarfs and Svirfneblin, the Deep Gnomes, out of their cities, the banished elves took over, breeding captives as slaves. They founded a civilisation deep beneath the earth, and they briefly had a monarch, though when they died all their works were destroyed and the succession crisis destroyed their nation, dividing what had become the Drow into myriad city-states, each ruled by a matriarch, usually the head of the most powerful noble family; sometimes the High Priestess. The Dark Seldarine of deities that were banished are led by their mother, Lolth, Queen of Drow and Spiders, ruled Her family and encouraged the Drow to mimic the Divine Hierarchy. Their culture is brutal, with the only way to climb the social ladder to murder somebody higher than you are. Unless you are male, in which case you are, if lucky, treated better than the slaves. Drow are tested regularly, with those who fail the tests 'cursed' to become a drider." There's more information, especially regarding the Dark Seldarine's deities, but that's the basics.
Old Hermitage of Dalachrech
A wagon is arriving here, pulled by a large, white-furred spider. Driving it forward is a tall, silver-haired and golden-skinned aasimar wearing a simple, comfortable silk gown with a small rod next to her in case of trouble. In the back should be Despair, Toy and possibly Mel'ara. All, if present, should be manacled to the wagon to prevent their escape.

"That'sss... That'sss vile and-and sssavage and ignominiousss!"
Sylvia hisses, outraged by what sounds like a sorry excuse for a society! Her eyes are alight with fire, and the air around her appears stained by a dense, pale-blue aura.
"How can people live like that? Like animalsss? There'sss no reassson to ssspread ancestral sssecretsss or honor the assshesss of the fallen in a place like that! How could they learn and improve as a race?"
If Sylvia had a rattle attached to her tail, it'd be shaking all over by now.

If resssearch does not circulate, they'd be performing the sssame experiments over and over and over again and wasssting their valuable time and resssources!"
Realizing all too soon that her speech has devolved into a rant, Syliva catches herself and corrects her tone to one more sympathetic than one of boiling blood.
"I'm thankful that you were emancccipated from that regime before it dessstroyed your inner beauty. Sssomeone ssshould ssstick Lolth with a big, pointy, sssword!"
And how!

"I had the eyes I was born with replaced, yes. A sign of devotion more radical and lasting than Narahar's tattoo, yet more enlightening too. Jorje is very devout, and that leads him to do things that people whose faith isn't so strong, or that manifests in other ways, see as strange.

"Drow do not live like animals. Animals don't require the death of the weak to gain the top. Those successful at gaining power are often very good at keeping it; they know all the tricks one might use to usurp them as they have used them before. It's cut-throat and violent, but it's an effective way of ensuring that those best prepared for leadership become leaders. They don't respect their ancestors; the culture differs from your own. They don't put any great stock in those that have come before, as they don't care for what happens to their offspring. Every drow is most concerned about themselves, and willing to do anything to survive. They don't focus on science; drow, like all elves, prefer the power of magic to the reliability of science. And magic enables those who master it many tools to further their aims, including seeing into the minds of those around them, blast their foes with flashy magic and teleporting away from danger." Charynrae is very disdainful of drow society. "As for sticking Lolth with a sword, two of Her children wish to do so- Eilistraee, the Goddess of the Moon, who seeks to lead the drow back to the surface and repent their evil ways. And Vhaeraun, the God of the Dark, patron deity of male drow, who seeks to overthrow the corrupt matriarchy and replace it with a more stable, male-oriented form of governance. They don't work well together; Vhaeraun supports the drow's evil, and Eilistraee is as sexist and misanthropic as Her mother, though She does not support the evil of the current priesthood. Dalachrech, too, seeks to end Lolth, though He does it more because she has dominion of spiders and my Lord of Invertebrates wishes to add that to His portfolio. Then there's the Seldarine, whom has clashed with its Dark counterpart many times, and the deities of the dwarfs and other subterranean creatures clashes with the Dark Seldarine as often as their mortal followers clash with the drow."

"Her own children plot her downfall. And ssshe'sss no better than them! If we ever come acrossss my village again, I'll let daddy know. He'll know how to take care of Lolth."
Sylvia promises, moving to attempt to hug Charynrae again.
"You'd like daddy and mommy. You'd also like his bessst friend, the bossss."
Sylvia attempts to comfortingly massage Charynrae's back while embracing her.
"You'd fit right in with usss! And we could get married and then you'd be his his daughter in-law and there'd be feasssting and partying and music and good food. We sssimply must visssit them, Charynrae!"

Re: [Nexus] Temples of Dalachrech I

"I will not fit right in. I will not fit right in because I'd be too busy gawking." Also, drow react badly to sunlight. They're temporarily blinded by the bright light and they also get disorientated very easily. "Who's 'Daddy'?" She has a much better concept of 'mummy', however, as the average drow male is a cross between a second-class citizen, a slave and furniture.
Inside Temple
"No, it is the will of Dalachrech that His worshippers honour Him and keep Him appeased, else He shall send plagues of locusts to the fields and hordes of cockroaches into the cities. I chose to change my eyes, and did it on my own initiative, not because He asked me to." Jorje walks through the door he opened a while back and reveals a large altar room, with two columns of pews along each side of the room with a single central aisle. At the end of the aisle is a raised dais displaying a simple stone altar with a two-tailed scorpion carved into the front cover and a gold idol resting upon it. The idol is shaped as a centipede with three scorpion tails, the claws of a praying mantis and the head of a ground beetle with large mandibles.

The solution to the light sensitivity: sunglasses! A chic accessory for every drow to own!
"Gawking?"
Sylvia repeats. Her Common vocabulary has been aggrandized from what it was before she met One and Two, but she hasn't learned the word gawking just yet.
"What do you mean by you'd be gawking?" :smallconfused:
Sylvia asks inquisitively, making a point of remembering not to belabor her own distaste for drow cruelty on their honeymoon.
Yep! She's thinking that far ahead already!
"Daddy isss the man I proudly call my father! He taught me how to fight and ssscavenge and ssspeak! I can sssurvive all on my own because of him! I know how to navigate by the ssstarsss and use my inssstinctsss to hunt and heal and how to channel the energies of nature through me because of him!"
Sylvia really loves her adopted family and it shows in her tone, diction, and body language.

Despair, who's a pretty, though half-starved, Tiefling with a faint purple tinge to her skin, a long, prehensile tail, short horns, and a pair of semi-insubstantial wings, is indeed in the back, quietly waiting for the wagon to arrive, having offered no resistance to being manacled to it when they set out.
If Percival is visible from where she is, the half-demon is studying him curiously, committing his face to memory, as she suspects that knowing who (and where in the Temple's hierarchy) he is could be important later on, since presumably, while Azurelle will probably be giving her most of her orders, others in the Temple can also do so, and it'll almost certainly save her quite a bit of pain if she knows whose orders to carry out first if there's a conflict between them.

Re: [Nexus] Temples of Dalachrech I
Old Hermitage of Dalachrech
When Azurelle's wagon is close enough to see the bottom of the fortress-hermitage, it's clear that something is going on. Forty apparently human guards in chain shirts and metal caps are slowly loading items of furniture onto several wagons, each pulled by a gigantic invertebrate. They are aided by twenty or so gangly, eight-eyed, pale purple creatures that are tying everything down with silk produced by spinarets in their wrists and directing several small giant spiders (they're cat-to-dog sized, rather than pony-to-horse sized) in assisting them in their labours.
When Azurelle sees Percival, the aasimar yells out to the demon. "Hey, Percival! What's happening? Why're we moving, and why aren't the slaves helping?" She seems rather concerned.
Also, Despair doesn't have to do anything anybody else asks her to- she's Azurelle's slave, and the only person higher than Azurelle in the Order of the Centipede is her deity, and theoretically Terrowin, whenever Azurelle is within earshot, anyway.

Toy continues her hardly disturbed nap in the face of all of the background noise! Hey, this wagon surpasses her regular billeting by a long shot! :smalltongue:
Grimly truthful, but amusing nonetheless!
Meanwhile, Eericka likely lingers in Percival's private quarters, quite possibly having gone so far as to barricade the door against any of Dalachrech's servants that might try to access the chamber with the exceptions of Percival, Elezibethele, and maybe Azurelle. She's either been studying Durant or human literature while Percy has been absent.

Percival swoops down from the sky, having just arrived behind Azurelle after making sure his mistress was comfortable. "Because they're gone. Watchtower took them all out from under us, but for my Eericka. Tried to kill the Lady Elezibethele." Percy shakes his head and glances toward the human troops. "We're moving to an abandoned mine in the mountains. Hopefully that will give me time to train your men."
Percy's eyes glance over the contents of Azurelle's wagon. "I see the hermitage was the only target. Good." His eyes linger on the tiefling. He'd thought demons - or those with fiendish heritage - would be spared from slavery. It seems he assumed wrong.

"I'd be staring at all the strange things around me. Or strange to me, anyway. Doubtless they will be there, those treeeees and stuff. Is a father a type of mentor?" Charynrae really has no idea what a father is. It's an alien concept to her culture.

"Yes, I gave up my human eyes voluntarily. I prefer these; not only do I think they look good, but I can see better in the dark with them." Then, about the scorpion tails. "Nobody can change their true form. If I were to transfigure myself into an ogre and live as one for the rest of my natural life, inside I'd still be human. Dalachrech's true form happens to have three tails. Each has a different poison- one is sleep, one is instant death and the third is paralysis, though exactly which poison will be administered by which tail changes often."

"That's annoying. Just as well I picked up these in the city, hmm? Toy's idea- rather than buying somebody, she said I could blackmail somebody into a position that I could kidnap them from. Worked a treat. Pity about losing Slave; I was hoping to trade her for a night with Defelent's personal slave. I hadn't touched her yet. And none of the people here are 'men' Percival. They're either aranea or ettercaps or something else I'm unfamiliar with." Azurelle turns around and kicks Toy in the ribs to awake her before unshackling them. "You lot, get up. Toy, show the others to the Punishment Room. Take a crate with you. Put everything you can into the crate. Anything that goes missing I'll replace easily; I have spares for most in storage, hopefully amongst that which is already loaded. If you try hiding any of it, you'll be whipped and given to the ettercaps. Those chaps, there- see? The gangly ones." She points at a blotchy purple-skinned creature with a vaguely horse-like head and eight eyes, with three fingers on its hands and very gangly limbs that don't seem able to support its pot-bellied figure. There's several similar chaps around, although the colours vary.

"As with most religions, it is built around the worship of one deity. However, Dalachrech does not ask for much, and much of what He asks of us is for the planet's well-being, as well. He asks us to kill invertebrates only for our survival and not slaughter them wholesale to maintain unnatural monocultures in our fields or to prevent disease in humanoids and livestock, save only where the invertebrates directly cause the disease rather than simply spread it. This helps ensure that the natural ecosystems remain healthy, viable and capable of supporting us." Dalachrech can and will send plagues of locusts, grasshoppers, weevils, or other such creatures to smite communities which have gone against His will.

"Semantics," Percival replies, waving off her comment about the species of Dalachrech's minions. He finds the idea of blackmailing someone and subsequently kidnapping them both clever and awful. Azurelle is practically a demon herself, with the way that mind works. "Handle things out here a moment, will you?"
That said, he'll head inside, past the defiled chapel, and on upstairs to the clergy's quarters. He unlocks his door, but finding it blocked, bangs on it with the side of his fist. "Eericka! I'm here! Get this door open!" He could very easily smash through, but she might've blocked the door with his furniture, and he's loathe to waste it.

[Old Hermitage of Dalachrech - Toy]
((I don't, as a habit, skip players in turn order unless a notice has been posted beforehand. Due to extenuating circumstances, think I'll make an exception here this one time.))
Props to Toy! She's the mind of a demon, apparently! And her defiled soul is stained with hate. Pure hate. Nothing but hate. The hate that has sustained her for years without fail. Nurtured her. A trait born into her artificially but cultivated and linked to her so strongly that it can't be that unnatural to her. She wants Azurelle to suffer. She'll hurt her bad. But she'll see to it that she lives. Why should her life come to a close? How could whatever treats await her in Dalachrech's kingdom be not a prize to her? She'll make her powerless. She's sworn she will.
Dreams adhering to these parameters racing through her head, Toy kills a snarl before it passes her lips once Azurelle kicks her. She's tempted to try to trick Azurelle, but decides it to her advantage to bide her time. Retaliation at current would get her put down.
Or worse.
"Y-yes Mistress Azurelle. As you wish."
She grunts. Where she was kicked is going to bruise.
Toy rubs her side, standing and walking toward the torture chamber as fast as her legs will carry her without her movement being regarded as jogging or sprinting. She motions for Despair to join her so that they can converse.
Because now that her sisters are out of the picture, Toy has nothing to lose.
-------
[Old Hermitage of Dalachrech - Eericka]
Long before the commands issued by Percy ringing throughout the chamber die away, Percy should hear the telltale scraping of something heavy against the floor on the other side of the door.
Instants later, the door swings open revealing an upset Eericka.
"Percival? Percival! I was worried about you, Percival! What happened? I heard some things out there and I wouldn't let them in! I don't trust them! I thought you were dead and that I'd have to blast my way past the evil centipede monsters!"
Aw! Eericka missed Percy! She was beginning to think that he might've died! And then where'd she be? Stuck with Azurelle? :smalleek: No how! No way!
-------
[Underside Temple]
"Treess! Yeah! There were treess everywhere! You'd be sensational at climbing them! You'd probably be the bessst tree climber in my entire clan!"
Sylvia smiles, proud of her girlfriend! Climbing trees would be second nature to Charynrae, Sylvia predicts. After all, she can walk on walls! Sylvia can't brag that she can walk on walls! She can hang from branches, though! And coil up things! But she can't scale big trees very well (if at all). She's much too small for that!
Charynrae's question is...well, almost impossible for Sylvia to wrap her mind around. How can't Charynrae know what a father is! She must have one! Cute little drow babies that mature into gorgeous knockouts don't grow on trees!
...
Wait. If Charynrae never had a father, Sylvia reasons, she must've descended from something like a tree! Like something that can reproduce all on its own!
That explains everything!
But then...
Why did Charynrae say those things about males and not being able to have babies with her? :smallconfused: Sylvia's brain hurts.
"Sssure! I never ever thought about it much! A daddy's like a...a male versssion of a mommy! They take care of you and teach you how to hunt and fight and build! And they go off and get you ssstuff! Like food ssso you aren't ever hungry! And they love you! Because you're their daughter!"
"Mommiesss ssshare thossse sssort of resssponsssibilitiesss too! They're female though! That'sss the biggessst difference!"
"My daddy alwaysss wanted to be a mage, but the clan needed him to be leader! The more I think about it, the better I think he'd like you!"

Re: [Nexus] Temples of Dalachrech I
[OHoD - Despair]
((Hm. Was it my turn, then? I'd thought it was yours, so I was doing the same thing...))
Despair has considerably less hatred for Azurelle than Toy does; certainly, she hasn't been treated well, but in comparison to what the sisters have been through, and life in her home universe, she actually hasn't had that rough a time, so she has less reason.
Of course, it also plays a part that she's a name-mage, and jettisoned the identity that she had been using once it became clear she was stuck with this for a while, replacing the person she'd been with someone much more willing to deal with being a slave, and specifically Azurelle's slave.
In any case, Despair will indeed join Toy, though she seems to have no intention to start the conversation herself.

"Do you eat? Because everything that eats is part of an ecosystem. Maybe not the one I'm used to, but to make an ecosystem there's food, something to eat that food, and usually something to eat whatever eats the food." Typically the food is a plant, but in certain deep sea habitats the food is sulphur emitted from the heart of the earth and the decaying remains of dead animals and plants, whilst in caves the food could be acid, rock, or sulphur again.
Underside Temple
"Oh, the male parent! I have one, but I don't know where or whom he is. Probably some mildly-attractive male labourer or guard my mother noticed once. Males are low on the social ladder, and only the lowest-ranking females stick to only one male throughout their lives, and even then the child is raised solely by her mother, unless she's a boy in which case he's... I don't know. He's raised somehow; maybe the males do it, or low-ranking females." Hopefully that explains things to Sylvia's satisfaction.
Old Hermitage of Dalachrech
Azurelle goes to her room and starts packing everything she wants to keep. That includes both spears, her chest of personal torture implements, her clothes and armour and her father's platemail. The other trophies can rot for all she cares; she can claim new ones when she's reclaimed her slaves.
The Torture Chamber is large, with manacles built into the wall and several racks of knives, whips, unusual spiky things and also two racks of potions; some are green, and others are blue. Mounted on one wall is a large wheel, and there's a stretching rack, a Judas chair and several tables adorned with manacles. It's much better appointed than the one in Riverside. Also present is a brazier filled with ash and several branding irons.

Re: [Nexus] Temples of Dalachrech I
[Old Hermitage of Dalachrech]
"I'm...I'm sorry you were captured on my account. It was my idea and my fault and, well, I..."
Toy's voice trails off. This was her fault. All of it. This girl is being forced to sub in for her sisters. It was like a trade. A darn swap! She didn't mean for this to happen! She didn't premeditate it!
"I believed she'd get in over her head..."
Toy sighs, surveying the stock of knives. She uproots one from its shelf and holds it in her hands, considering...
Toy attempts to search the chamber for any flint the torturers might have mistakenly left behind. There are two rows of potions left, aren't there?
It'd be good to know...
If they're flammable. :smallamused:

[Underside Temple]
"Ssso you never met your daddy?"
Sylvia confirms, her brain registering this as hard to swallow.
"That'sss okay. My genetic parentsss have been gone sssince...sssince before I can remember. But then I wasss adopted and..."
"..."
"And I don't remember that either."
Sylvia attempts to wrap the lower end of her tail around Charynrae's lower torso and she then attempts to lean in close to her whisper a secret to her.
"Charynrae, do you think I might've been...ssstolen from my parentsss?"

Re: [Nexus] Temples of Dalachrech I
Inside Temple
"In that case." Tovpir answers. He hasn't thought of it that way. For him an ecosystem has things and every new creature is a thread. So since he is new in the Nexus he sees himself a thread for this ecosystem trying to get involved.
