Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
While I don't think it makes much sense for Jones to be the nucleus (well, one of many nuclei) around which the Earth formed, the Earth has differentiated by density - very very roughly, you have your lighter silica stuff in the mantle and crust, and almost all the iron sinking down to the core. Jones appears to be quite dense, but perhaps not as much as the rocks and iron in the bulk of the Earth, perhaps allowing her to float upwards over the course of millions of years*.
Admittedly, Jones appears to be quite a lot heavier than humans - probably more than three times heavier - and since we have an average density of about 1060 kg m-3 and the crust has an average density of 2380 to 2990 kg m-3 she might not rise to the surface after all.
*haven't actually worked out the timescale here...

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
...how heavy exactly do you think people are, in kg? >_>
That difference should be plenty for her to rise up, if we were to go in this direction.

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
She only needs to make it to the bottom of a volcano, then she can ride the eruption up and out.

Thing is, it's not mass, it's density. So we're comparing a cubic meter of person to a cubic meter of rock/iron. While the generalized human-material is less dense, it is not as much less dense as you'd think, at least going by Bryn's numbers.

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
OK. This is becoming HILARIOUS.
-
Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
According to Wikipedia, Jones is now billions of years old.
My failing imagination suggests she is the original clump of matter that the Earth formed around, though this says nothing of actually what she is.
Retroactive creation? Time travel?
Although if she goes on much longer, the title "The Stone" gets harder to justify. Asteroid? How'd she get stuck in an asteroid? Or did an asteroid get retroactively shaped into a person? How? Does the Ether shaped belief bypass puny concepts as "linearity"?
-
Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
Do aliens effect ether belief?
Or are there no aliens and humans are the only living things in the universe?
-
Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
Okay, at this point, I dunno. I have no idea. I think the best guess is still Earth Goddess, since she's apparently about as old as the actual Earth. But which, I dunno.
I swear, if the next page has her floating in space...
-
Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
I also find it fascinating again as this demonstrates just how indestructible she is. Lava is no joking matter. Not even her hair cares. :smalleek:
(I kinda doubt she is any sort of goddess though, as she apparently has no ether capacity whatsoever and thus probably no abilities that go along with that.)

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
Aww dammit, she's an alien isn't she...
*aims plasma rifle*
:smalltongue:

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
...thus ended her first and only attempt to use lava as a coat.

Worse, she's LAVOS!
Quick, where's Lucca, Marle and Crono when we need them?

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
My mind cannot grasp being buried alive for billions of years and remaining sane. Jones' mental strength is beyond my comprehension. Unless she went to sleep...
I have this worrisome hunch that soon we'll see Jones floating in interstellar space as she has for an unthinkable time, slowly being pulled towards a newly ignited sun surrounded by a protoplanetary disc out of which several planets are forming..

Coyote mentioned stars.
She may be a fallen one.
Perhaps a star's soul.

"'In our world,” said Eustace, 'a star is a huge ball of flaming gas.'
'Even in your world, my son, that is not what a star is but only what it is made of.'"

On a sillier note, I am reminded of a Calvin and Hobbes storyline where Calvin kept growing, and growing, and growing.

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
Jones is an Angel, maybe. Alternatively, human free will in Gunnerkrigg means nothing due to how time works; Jones (and other things) exist as what they are because humans believed in them, but they also already existed so humans HAD to believe in them to cause them to be in the first place. Or something. Time travel makes tenses hard to work with.
That or she is Earth's First Guardian! ...sorry, I understand that Homestuck isn't always favored in some parts of the internet, but the comparison is uncanny.

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
Jones is Jones.
Deal with it. :smallcool:

Mystery solved?
Whatever she is I wander, Does Jimmy-Jim truly apprehend how much history his Girlfriend has? How does he cope with that?

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
If Jones is an alien, that means there is a race of indestructible, immortal humanoids, which may or may not all appear female and/or be very stoic, somewhere in the universe.
Unless Jones is the last one, but the idea of something that could destroy a planetful of Jones is too terrifying to imagine.
Also, it appears Jones was not made emotionless by immortality and her life full of doomed mortals, as some said; she was like that already.
New theory because I'm stuck; Jones is the Universe's eye, watching over all of creation. She is made of some form of magic stone, or possibly was crafted from actual stone.

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
Maybe its a divine punishment? Cause it would be absolutely insanely evil.

Great minds think alike, eh? :smalltongue:
In other news, I have no idea what Jones is or how she's coped with living for literally billions of years. Gaia, maybe? :smallconfused:

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
Well, if she was made to live billions of years, then I don't see why she would have trouble coping.
If mayflies have complex thoughts, they might wonder how we cope with living so long.

You know, I almost wouldn't be surprised if he went through this whole thing to get to this pre-dirt point so the whole thing can end with Jones saying "Older than dirt".
Almost.

Maybe Jones was created by the thoughts of humans and the idea was so strong that she was sent back in time like another poster mentioned. "And where he does not find an answer, he places one there himself," says Coyote in comic 1073. Maybe she was born from human's desire to know their past?
Otherwise, if she is an existence independent of humanity then her human form becomes an anomaly. Assuming of course what we see in these flashbacks are her true appearance. Or maybe she belongs to some precursor group that created humanity? In their own image? Or her human form is just a mighty coincidence.
Oh, hope this gets resolved soon my brain hurts.

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
Annie's all like "What the fuuuuuuuuuu-".
Which is probably how a fair amount of the audience looks as well.
-
Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
Ha!
Thank you, Antimony, for expressing how we all feel so perfectly.
(edit) Ninja'd!

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
Annie mirrors the audience.
Also, this comic is hilarious. I mean the drawing is great, but Tom totally blindsided me with a punchline in the comments.
I didn't even realize all the wikipedia linking would form into a punchline.

Re: Gunnerkrigg Court 3: Mystery Solved!
Jones is as old as planet Earth. Mystery Solved.
