Re: The Fire and The Black: Daemonfold [IC]
Ilvaria cannot help but smile at the sight of Orv finally taking the bait. She uses the opportunitty to... to pray.
"Might Ragathiel, please look upon your humble servant and aid us in the hour of need. Bless our weapons against evil that has befallen us. Let them become instruments of your wrath and strike down on our enemy. Let them break through the hardest shield or armor. For you are the holy wrath and we are instruments of your will."

Re: The Fire and The Black: Daemonfold [IC]
The truth behind the increasingly thin facade grows more obvious as the scorched remains of a glove fall to the floor, revealing half a dozen writhing tendrils. As Jack flees, Payle's spell causes the figure to pause, attempting in vain to dodge the magical hammer only for it to bulge and shatter as it strikes. Despite the creature's resistance, however, the attack engrossed its full attention for a moment, and it's in that moment that a shimmering ray strikes its back. A moment later, it turns towards the source.
<Stupid.> The word shimmers in your minds, carrying an almost palpable scorn, just before similarly scornful sounds some from its veiled mouth, muffled slightly but loud and clear enough to be recognizable to Aja as the verbal components of slow. A split second later, one glove squirming, the spell is completed, a wave of supernatural lethargy rolls over her and Ilvaria - a glance shows the armored thug gritting her teeth as well. The creature's spell seems entirely ineffective, however - while Ilvaria seems like she may succumb for a moment, she recovers and shrugs off the effect, with Aja and even the seated thug seeming to all but ignore the effect.
The creature withdraws from the two, moving to the back of the basement near Payle, exposed tentacles twisting as it glances towards the door Jack went through for just a moment.

Re: The Fire and The Black: Daemonfold [IC]
"Just so you're aware, I have a thousand of these up my sleeve." Payle cautions the tentacled creature, now that it's firmly in their trap, as she reaches into her sleeve and retrieves a pink orb that she hurls at the ground. It explodes into the form of a celestial leopard, which leaps at Orv while she ducks further into the corner. Even as she does so, she can feel the glow crawling out of her mind, as a wicked blade of many colors suddenly oozes out her sleeves, forming over her hands.

With the cat well out of the bag, Jack stops his act, and emerges from the chamber he had been hiding in. The smile he shows to Orv is rather tauntingly insincere, and his voice, when he speaks, is rather mocking. "And you would be Orv, I presume? Jarrick's been kind enough to tell us all about you. I trust you're finding our reception adequate?" Holding a dagger in his right hand, he stands ready to assist, bravely facing the enemy against whom he can do little.

"Well, I can't exactly say that was pleasant but then again you are a tentacled horror from an eldritch realm borne of death and other things too awful to consider so I might as well respond in kind!" Her blade swings out, trying to catch Orv in the neck.

Re: The Fire and The Black: Daemonfold [IC]
As the leopards hurl themselves at Orv, the cloaked creature seems to be pulled down for a moment, before rising and shaking them off, layers of fabric shredded and a black stain showing that at least some of their assault drew blood. Still, between that and the way both Ilvaria and Aja find their weapons to clash against or slide off the air around it, it becomes obvious that Orv is veiled in layers of magical protection in addition to its own natural defenses. With a swift motion, it steps forwards, moving while the leopards are still regaining their footing and the weapons of Aja and Ilvaria are off-balance.
With a sound halfway between growling and coughing, Orv spits out another few syllables of magical power, its tentacles writhing as it lashes out in a wide circle, keeping its guard up even as it channels another surge of magical power. Heat builds around its remaining glove before it erupts into fire, a beam of fiery light surging out to strike Ilvaria in the chest, filling the room with the smell of burning flesh.

The leopards rush forwards again, their claws revealing more of Orv's form even as some find their mark, celestial teeth drawing more of its black, foul-smelling blood. With writhing tentacles, Orv rises, forcing them back with a flurry that leaves it open to attack from another angle. It stops suddenly, coming to a halt as if frozen, as a multicolored blade is thrust through its chest, the blood-covered tip emerging on the side facing Aja and Ilvaria before Orv collapses. With a decisive strike, the daemon has been felled.

Re: The Fire and The Black: Daemonfold [IC]
Aja looks on in a rare moment of open disgust as the strange woman and her otherwise pretty kitties absolutely eviscerate Orv. Wincing slightly as Payle delivers the finishing blow, the elf waits until the daemon stops moving before nodding slightly; the motions are too quick, and blatant in their automaticity.
"Right so we're just in the business of murdering captive creatures that seems just fine yeah okay no problem." The words escape Aja's lips before she can catch them. She was told beforehand what this creature is, and she went into this battle knowing its capabilities. Plus, she's now helped to save Jerrick from a potentially awful fate, and isn't that what they set out to do? Still, the summary execution doesn't really feel right to her, just like... Payle made the choice for all of us, without hesitation or remorse.
"So sorry it's just that I was sort of expecting to get to question Orv or retain some sort of useful intelligence from her for our investigation or at least my own records on the influences of lower planar outsiders on human and demi-human societies but that's alright besides me none of us had any lingering questions about Jerrick's involvement with the fiend, right?" Despite the words, when the magus speaks it is without even a trace of apparent sarcasm. Instead, she just takes stock of the other people in the room - of her new allies. If that is indeed what they are to be.
-
Re: The Fire and The Black: Daemonfold [IC]
The Glow tilts its head at the first person to speak, then tosses the severed head at Aja.
-
Re: The Fire and The Black: Daemonfold [IC]
"That was.... amazing!" Ilvaria almost jumps from excitement, suddenly cheerful like a kid after watching the daemon slain. She runs towards Payle, or rather the Glow and barely can contain herself from just hugging her out. "How did you do that? It's amazing! You just stabbed him and then bang! and bang again! and you cut his head off!" She goes on like that for a while but then seemingly realizes how it must look, composes herself and tries to keep on some dignity intact. "That was a mighty and heroic feat of you. I'm honored I could've fought with you side by side and hope it won't be the last time." She reaches to shake payle's hand. "But seriously, it was freaking badass." She adds under her breath.
After all is said she uses her spear to turn what's left from Orv's corpse on the back and touches it carefully few times.
"I'm...kinda wary of just checking it our, but he could have something useful." She points out, looking at anyone willing to help her with the remnants. "Speaking of which..." She suddenly rememebrs somethins and walks towards where they left a woman in armor. Vigilant and ready for any surprise attack she leans over the woman and asks "Hey! You still with us?"
-
Re: The Fire and The Black: Daemonfold [IC]
The Glow's reaction to Ilvaria's very enthusiastic compliments consists of a long, high-pitched groan of confusion and a momentary attempt at absorbing some of Ilvaria into its oily rainbow substance when their hands shake. Inside The Glow, Payle's mind flares to life with some small amount of jealousy that she didn't get to feel any of the affection from the cute Drow. She actively attempts to exert her will as The Glow follows Ilvaria over to the surrendered thug, stalking up just beside her to peer at her with its splotchy eyes.
-
Re: The Fire and The Black: Daemonfold [IC]
His pale face, and the slight shaking of his normally steady hands the only remaining reminders of his "healing" magic, Jack distracts himself by starting to go through the demon's pockets, moving with the experience of a veteran pickpocket.
-
Re: The Fire and The Black: Daemonfold [IC]
The armored thug shifts as Ilvaria approaches, coughing as she looks over to The Glow. "Er, yes," she says. "I'm with you. Can you make sure it...she...doesn't go chop-happy with me?" She asks, nodding to the more colorful of the two grimly. "I like my head right where it is."
Spoiler: Jack
Show
Searching Orv's pockets is a gruesome affair - going through the multi-layered cloth and determine what is a pocket that could contain valuables, and what is just another fold, is difficult and made more so by the quickly-cooling black blood soaking much of it.
Eventually, though, Jack finds the following:
- An elegantly-carved wooden wand, tipped with a dull sapphire
- A pair of rough sketches that seem to indicate the position of the Academae and Theumanexus College
- Thirty gold coins, darkened by dried blood
-
Re: The Fire and The Black: Daemonfold [IC]
Wiping his hands on Orv's clothing as he encounters the many patches of fresh blood, Jack goes through it methodically, his flashing hands revealing a wand, a pair of maps, and a pile of gold coins, before he moves back from the corpse, and speaks, his voice calm, and easy to understand. "Looks like that's all it was carrying, unless there's something to the clothing." As the thought occurs to him, he pauses, and chants, briefly, before his eyes shift into flames, to reveal things more normally left unseen.

Re: The Fire and The Black: Daemonfold [IC]
Despite the clear memories of her elven etiquette tutor shouting at her from the back of her mind, Aja cannot help but recoil as Orv's head is thrown her way. "Agh," she exclaims in a decidedly non hyperverbal fashion. "Why did you do that?"
Shaking it off, the spellsword watches with some interest first as Jack rifles through the daemon’s pockets, and then when Ilvaria talks to the guard. They seem so nonchalant about all of this, as though it's second nature to all of them. Aja reminds herself that she has been in fights before. This... whatever it is, deep in her chest, she should not be feeling it so aggressively. But the elf certainly knows the best way to combat it.
"Well that was amazing great work everyone I'm sure that Jerrick and the rest of House Overni will be so happy we’ve killed the venadaemon!"
-
Re: The Fire and The Black: Daemonfold [IC]
The armored thug nods, pushing her already-dropped sword over to Ilvaria and fishing out two daggers, setting them on the ground. "House Overni? You're working for nobles, then?" She asks, a note of hope in her voice, though she still seems to be eyeing The Glow somewhat warily.
After a moment, a man appears at the top of the stairs - easily recognized as one of the mercenaries hired earlier. "All clear," he says.
-
Re: The Fire and The Black: Daemonfold [IC]
Jack offers a cheerful smile to the mercenary. "Wonderful. I love it when a plan comes together, don't you?" His smile fades, as his face takes on a more serious mien. "All clear down here as well. Any difficulties? Or casualties?"
-
Re: The Fire and The Black: Daemonfold [IC]
The mercenary shakes his head. "Neither. Poor bastards broke pretty quick, once they saw there wasn't a way out," he says. "We got two prisoners, tied and quiet."
-
Re: The Fire and The Black: Daemonfold [IC]
Jack's smile broadens at the mercenary's words, and he steps up, clearly meaning to get out of the basement. His voice is quite cheerful. "Wonderful! We do have injured, but the ringleader's quite dead. Have you sent word to our employers? They might be interested in talking to the prisoners as well."
-
Re: The Fire and The Black: Daemonfold [IC]
"We can send a runner," the man says, glancing off to the side and nodding. "...And she's off."
