Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
Maybe i took the theme a little too literally, but i just posted, as a placeholder, the table of my entry: the cannibal, a class based on... well... eating people, gaining bonuses and temporary stealing skills, feats and other abilities.
I hope i'll manage to complete it within few days.
-
Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
I think I'm going to make something overly complicated with 2 resource pools and a tendency to hurt themselves by consuming their own blood, a strict daily limited ability to convert their "per encounter" resource pull into their daily to avoid accidentally playing the phoenix, and Necrocarnate problems.
Yeah going boring and going for a blood mage of sorts.
-
Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
The cannibal is overall complete: it still needs spellchecking, but i promise i'll do it soon!
I hope you like it
If i'll manage to, i'll add a bunch of racial substitution level for Shifter, Raptorans and maybe another race or two.
As usual comments and suggestions are welcome!

For those of you who care I have repaired and reposted the Wandering Mind here.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
I'm back in the game! Posted the chassis for a big game hunter who fuels trick shots by eating his prey.

Noob, another question about the dnd player. What happens if you use a dual progression prc for your dips like cerebremancer for psionic/arcane? Do you get both bits of it?

In a general way there is castings transparency so each time you can progress a casting you can choose any casting you have and progress it of one.
if you have two or more different casting classes you can progress two of them(and it is possible by dipping in two base classes or by dipping first in a prc progressing a casting without having one(creating a new casting)then taking a dip in a new caster base class)
You might also decide to progress two times the same casting if the GM allows that(so if your gm was allowing you to take shair then mystic theurge for double progression then he will probably allows you to do so(yes double progression happens without the dnd player class so I honestly do not care about that because GMs who choose to forbid double castings will do the same thing with the dnd player class))

I'm working on a terror called the "Tread". The chains of Setesh call us all.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
The big game hunter could theoretically be played now, but I'd like maybe twenty more hunter's tricks. Any suggestions? Any glaring holes in his utility (should be tier 3)?

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
Maybe some mobility trick.(like a movement as an immediate action or other stuff of this kind)
An hide on plain sight trick who include the effects of dark-stalker could be nice.(used as a free action as a part of tempting to hide and costing some animus)
Maybe add in the list a trick allowing to resist divination(You use it to be immune to divination and you also know that someone attempted to know what you wanted to do)
You could also for quite powerful tricks put a minimum level.

I like these ideas. I tried to roll up the mobility and hide in plain sight in one trick (I may need to actually change the wording so it functions that way) and gave him the nondetection trick. The tricks are now divided into five levels, and the class table tells you when you can choose a given level trick. Do you think it's worthwhile to have a move as a swift action trick AND a move as an immediate action trick? I also added a decent but not essential capstone ability. Thanks for the feedback.
Edit: now I just plain gave it hide in plain sight. I think it's done. PEACHes welcome.

Yes, I do.

It looks to me like the most similar class is the wizard. By that, I mean that if I was presented with the core classes plus the potion maker, I would be weighing it against the wizard if that's what I wanted to be. It's not flavored like a sorcerer or cleric, really. So, it has the same number of "spells" per day. It has a limited selection, but it can get its spells off with other characters' actions. That's huge. It has some spells that are normally divine, and all its spells can be ranged (right? can you splash allies with buff potions?). Divine Power and Righteous Might were never meant to leave the Cleric's pocket, but it is a shame that fighters never get to enjoy them.
I might not allow this class if I was DM, but then again, I might want to see it in action, because it would be awesome. I can't say it's hands down better than the wizard, but it's close. It trails it slightly in versatility, and blows it out of the water on power. However, this assessment is predicated on a couple assumptions: allies can throw or drink the potions, and allies can be buffed with thrown potions. Also, I don't understand what you're saying with the sentence "Similarly, if he chooses not to brew all of their potions at this time, it can brew a single potion later in the day by expending a spell slot of the requisite level." Or, I think know what you're saying, but how long does this take?
Oh, and it has better HD and saves than the wizard? SOLD!

Whoops! I was in Florida visiting family and totally forgot to end the contest and make a voting thread. I'll get right on it.
Posted.

If you'd taken like 3 more days I'd have seen if I could sneak in some theurge PrCs.

You can go better than that. Check out Ikari Colenzo's stat block, under his full attack and feats:
3 Potions of Shocking Grasp +0/+0/+0 ranged touch (5d6 electricity) or shortbow +2/+2 ranged (1d6)
Rapid Shot, Two-Weapon Fighting
She starts off with one attack, then gets a second attack from its offhand and a third because they have rapid shot. If it leveled up to 20th, he could take more TWF and make 5 attacks - perhaps more if she took some levels in something with full BAB, although they would probably be better off getting the high-level potions than being able to lob more of them.
This can get pretty mean with enervation, but given your limited spell selection, you don't have quite as much versatility.

Compared to tier 2 full casters it's actually the reverse. Mechanically at low levels the difference between its Save DCs and a Sor/Wiz's are the least and due to its superior hit die size it actually isn't more vulnerable than a Wizard until its cast 3 spells at which point the wizard is either out of juice (Int 26 or less generalist, Int 18 or less specialist) or dangerously low (Int 20+ specialist, focus specialist), or you compare it to a sorc and it's a trade off between spells per day (Sor gets 4, 5 if they have an 18 and a racial +2) and spells known (2 + Path vs 2). It's at high levels where it actually ends up with a significantly reduced power compared to Sorcerers (32 Con vs 32 Cha gives 10 9th level spells 1 8th if you want to die, and a spattering of 5th or lower levels, vs 10 9th 1 8th, 8 7th, 8 6th, and more 5th and lower level assuming you use versatile spellcaster feat). Of course this is actually intentional to curve the Quadratic nature of casting and try to get a sorcerer that plays nicer with non-full casters and who feels thematically interesting. So really it's trying to be able to play on a DN, Beguiler, Bard level and I'm not sure how well it does that.
There was math to be done for this class. And I remember why I usually just go "PHB + SpC" for spell lists.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
Shall we open the discussion for the next theme?
I vote for Attack the Darkness (Horror/Dark), Natural 1 (Bad Luck), Fixer Upper (Core fixes), or Special Snowflake (just be as original as possible). Failing that, I don't think anyone is still on here from before Contest IX, so we could repeat one of the first 8
Edit: I take it all back. Comic books.
-
Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
I for one would like to see a horror contest.
-
Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
Memes contest?
Horror would also work, and some of the initial eight look fun.
-
Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
I second The idea of The horror themed contest. I may Came up with a warlock-like Phobomancer based on fear effects!

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
How about Knights. Love writing morally up rite individuals.
-
Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
So three votes for horror, two for memes, one for comic books, and one for knights, with two suggestions/votes to go back to the oldies. Looks like horror at the moment.
-
Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
I'd say go back to oldies.
-
Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
If we do go back to the oldies I'd like to see what others did so I can avoid repeats.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
Jormengad if you want one day to make a better class based on the concept of the dnd player I give you the permission.
There was nothing else than the joke about how dnd players do their build by thinking
"And after getting beholder magi, and ur priest I will take levels in mystic theurge and the theurge class made for bards/divine(thanks to one trick for getting bardic music all of a sudden and the fact you can progress any profane casting) and finally recieve tons of books at me because my ur priest cl and beholder magi cl are both higher than my level"
So I do not think that this idea was original.

The initial post on this thread has links to all the old contests.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread IV: All Your Base [Class] Are Belong to Us
1st Place: Jormengand's potion maker!
2nd Place: sengmeng's big game hunter!
3rd Place: Zaydos' blood acolyte!
Tiebreaker vote for 2nd place goes to big game hunter. I like its simplicity while it at the same time maintains some amount of choice and some cool mechanics.
And here is the new contest! We're going back to the first contest theme I hosted--balance.
