Re: The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
Elthan
Elthan takes a chair and reclines to his best ability in it, watching the flames rise and die. Half the party was out looking for the Lizard, the rogues left to deal with some eggs, and he was left with his increasing duties. Among everything, he still had to tell everyone what he saw. He was doing this all for the group in the first place, wasn't he?
Still, I'd need to tell them how I came about it. Scrying is a simple white lie, and how else could I really describe it anyway? The group needs to know, but perhaps I could use a fine detail to my aid...
He grins to himself, satisfied at the plan forming in his head. He takes only a few more moments to contemplate the flames before gathering Hajih, Lissa and Si'rene and setting them to a table urgently. He speaks quickly as he apologize first to the three seated.
"I'm sorry, I'm a complete idiot for not saying anything sooner. I should probably begin with where I've been all day. I recieved a favor from the Temple of Mystra, and was able to perform some scrying. I saw Sethra speaking, and it would appear he's quite aware of our intentions to raise the army of the Iron Lord. This is good, however, because I was able to see that he is not prepared for this, because he believes we will not succeed, his demon mentioning that they required more time."
He lets the information sink in before realizing he stopped unfinished. He slows down a bit, and seems a bit less worried after revealing the information. "To the point, what this means is that we have, in fact, a good chance of stopping him so long as we make it there within reasonable time. After that, or even now, we can focus on planning as to how we can destroy him."
He pauses again, almost hesitating over the importance of the next thought. He leans his head in ponderance, holding his hand to his chin, "One last thing. Though I did not overhear it, given the focus of the discussion and the use of past tense when referring to us, I have been given the impression that he may have sent a vampire after us. A female type, tall and very decorative too. You'd almost envy her, Hajih. It would be wise to keep an eye out for her from now on."

Re: The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
Thokk
"Aye, the half breed needs help!"
Thokk picks himself up and rushes after Lumpy, trying to catch up if possible. As he leaves, he turns to the demon and a rather sadistic grin spreads on his face
"We gonna cut you up pretty you filth"
-
Re: The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
In the inn ...
Si'rene rises from her chair when Elthan reveals his vision. "Valentine. Her name is Valentine. She will be a formidable opponent."
She turns to Hajih. "We should prepare. If we are dealing with a true vampire, then we should gather appropriate weapons and gear."
Deep in the woods ...
Lumpy kneels down to get his bearings, tossing aside the bloody howler quill. The forest is eerily silent.
Suddenly he hears a thump and a crackle off to his right. He rises to a crouch and quietly raises his flail. He steps silently forward, eyes narrowed suspiciously.
He spots a rock lying on a patch of snow. The oldest trick in the book ... Before he can turn around, pain erupts across his back. Lumpy spins and stumbles awkwardly, reeling backward from the demon's thrashing claws.
OOC: Demon surprises and sneak attacks Lumpy for 15 points of damage.

Re: The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
Lumpy
Sonuva. . .
As the claws lash across his unprotected back, Lumpy reacts with abandon. The burly orc whirls, throwing everything he had at the demon. He was going to hit it with everything. Every trick he had, every ounce of strength, the god forsaken works. His one chance was in making the demon reconsider the danger he posed, and he could show no hesitation or fear.
And if that failed, well. He was going to run. Very quickly.

Katrin
Katrin crouches in the shadows of the alleyway. "Anyone have any ideas? Myself, I'm for going through that door, but we need to be slow and careful. I don't trust this smith--if that's what he really is, though I doubt it--not to have traps or other nasty surprises all over the place. Also, and this is probably more important, what are we going to do? Are we going to try to steal the package, or destroy it, or find evidence of why it's here? What do you all think?"
Finished with her speech, Katrin waits for the others to talk.
-
Re: The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
Yix
"I can go first if you wish, afterall I am just a simple pet. I propose we steal the package first and ask questions later." Yix looks around hoping his sentimnets are shared.
-
Re: The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
Outside the armor shop ...
When no one raises and instant objections, Yix zig-zags across the cobblestone street and presses himself up against the doorframe.
Yix leaps to the door handle and examines the lock, and finds that the door is bolted from the inside. After additional inspection, he leaps up into the eaves and disappears.
After a few suspenseful moments, the door quietly swings open.
In the forest ...
The weakened demon proves no match for Tiriel's (almost inhuman) strength. Pinned and unable to move, it can do little more than howl as Aeroz thrusts into its body again and again ... and again and again and again, until it finally expires, its exoskeleton collapsing in upon itself, leaving only a hollow crumbled shell behind.
Tiriel stands slowly and inspects her sword and armor, both of which have been damaged by the demon's acidic secretions.
Deeper in the forest ...
Lumpy knocks the feet out from under the demon, following up with one, then two mighty blows. If the bludgeoning harms the demon, it doesn't show it.
Ignoring the pounding it is receiving from Lumpy's flail, the demon scrambles to his feet, and flees.
Crashing noises from the opposite direction signal Thokk's approach.
OOC: Lumpy gets another AoO on the demon (AC 19). It's speed is 30 ft.

Fizahn:
As they near the building, Fizahn mumbles quietly to himself. "Should have gone during the day; could have posed as buyers." Fizahn quietly watches the pseudodragon leave before speaking quietly to Katrin. "I didn't want to mention this in front of either Achkby or Yix, but I think we should destroy the eggs. I'm fairly confident that they're more trouble than they're worth." He silently walks a few paces toward the door before turning back toward Katrin and whispering. Callos DeTerran
He watched dispassionately as Aeroz stabbed down at the injured demon spawn while Tiriel held it still. It was an enemy after all and the two of them looked like they had it well in hand. Once it was finished though the necromancer strided close and with a solemn look in his eyes pats Tiriel on the shoulder.
"Come on now. Lumpy ran after one of these things by himself and Thokk just followed. If we don't hurry then we might not find them in good shape."
Callos's palm stung, after all there was still acid left over on her armor. Little wisps of smoke rising up from his skin but he said nothing. It was the closest thing to....something. Why had he done it? It even baffled him why he had done it. He had been trying to imply something, he knew that. But what?

Katrin
Katrin smiles in amusement. That little dragon is worth his weight in gold... more, even.
She nods in agreement to Fizahn. "That's probably a very good idea... although I don't want to see what either of them will do if they find out the egg is broken."
Katrin scans the doorway in front of her for traps or other nasty surprises.

Tiriel
Tiriel lets go of the limp form of the... whatever it was and rolls over, hoping to lose some of the acidic goo in the snow, before standing up.
She stares at the corpse of the monster, saying nothing.
Callos's voice and touch ground her back into reality. She nods and retrieves her sword, scowling at the damage, before sheathing it.
"Right. Well, let's see if we can help them then."
She scoops up the rock that she'd cast daylight on before and, making sure that everyone is ready, heads off in the direction that the Lumpy and Thokk were last seen.
Move action at full speed
ooc: I assume that Evendur, Callos and Aeroz are accompanying her...?

Re: The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
At the armor shop ...
Fizahn trips over a loose cobblestone on his way across the street. The stone clatters across the paving before lodging in the gutter with a dull clunk. Achkby rolls his eyes.
Katrin slides to the doorframe, inspecting it carefully. Finding no traps, the three of you slip inside to join Yix in the darkened room. Light spills from behind the curtain. Someone is moving around inside the back storeroom.
In the forest ...
Lumpy scrambles after the fleeing demon and, looping his flail around one of its ankles, he brings it down for a second time. As the half-orc slams his flail into the demon again, he realizes that his weapon seems to be doing less damage than it ought to be. He also notes that the sticky ooze secreted by the demon seems to be coating his flail and corroding the shadowstuff.
Incredibly, the demon rises to its feet again and, again, scrambles away rather than engaging Lumpy in combat.
Thokk's warcry is audible in the distance. He is closing in as quickly as his short legs will allow ...
Even farther behind are Tiriel, Evendur, and Callos ...
-
Re: The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
Evendur
He nodded at Tiriel's request, taking off after the short form of Thokk.
Evendur thundered through the forest after the halforc and the dwarf. His breath sounded loudly in his ears confined by the helmet and visor which appeard with his armor. Heart hammering, he relished the sense of the chase, fighting through the burning in his calves and chest as he strives onwards through the thick undergrowth. Fear tinges his elation, though, fear of ariving too late, of not being able to help, of the sence of uselessness and, dare he think it, betrayal that would accompany the failure.
He'd lost sight of the dwarf now, vision restricted to a bare slit. His imediate surroundings, brush, wood and tree, were well lit, but the pace he was going at he couldn't analise what he saw fast enough. Had he missed a slight turning they had taken, gone the wrong side of a tree and been diverted away from his ... well, charges wasn't the right word, but he had sworn, at least to himself, to help them, despite their cold wecome.
Just as Evendur was about to slow to check his bearings he heard Thokk's cry off to the right somewhere. Damn these creatures to the nine hells, he had gone astray and it was nigh imposible to tell direction adequately when helmeted like this. Still, clearly there was no time to loose.
Without stopping Evendur takes a new direction a few degrees to the right, hoping for another clue to direct him to the fight.
[Ooc: Just thought I'd add to the narative a little. This way he can arive at the same time as Tiriel and Callos. I'm asuming that he left just after Thokk, seeing as he would readily take "orders" from Tiriel.]

Re: The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
Lumpy
Never in his life had Lumpy wished he knew anything about demonkind so much as he did now. The thing seemed to be invulnerable, and the acidic hissing coming from his flail was agony to his ears.
He didn't know what the demon was playing at, though he had a few guesses. Either it was leading him into a trap, and it knew something he didn't, or it wasn't as unassailable as it looked and honestly feared him. He didn't like to consider which was which.
Roaring, he continues to tear through the forest after the demon. Either he'd take it down or he wouldn't, he couldn't see it any other way. After each blow, he strives to keep his weapon spinning to throw off the demon's acid.

Lumpy smashes the demon and chases after it, practically breathing down its neck. Lumpy isn't quite able to trip it again, but when it realizes that Lumpy won't give up, it decides to turn and fight.
The demon whips around so quickly that Lumpy almost crashes into it. The demon's attack is so fast as to be almost invisible. Lumpy hears as much as feels its claws tearing his flesh.
OOC: Lumpy takes 9 damage. Thokk and Evendur will arrive two turns from now. Lumpy can go ahead and submit two rounds worth of attacks.

Achkby, Halfling Sorcerer
Though Achkby wants desperately to be at the front of the pack, he realizes the others are all far better than he at sneakery, and he hangs back, content for now to provide firepower or a distraction.
Achkby does his best to conceal the adrenaline, born of excitement, coursing through his veins. Not only is the sorcerer dramatically breaking in to the stronghold of the enemy with a few brave companions--and one despicable miscreant--he's about to rescue a baby dragon from the clutches of a demon army's dark elven cohorts!

Re: The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
In the armor shop ...
Achkby carefully closes the front door behind him, and the four of you quietly converge on the curtain-covered storeroom door. Dim light spills into the room from around the edges of the curtain. Katrin is almost invisible in the shadows, and the rest of you carefully edge around the tables, mannikins, and racks, keeping out of sight as much as possible.
A pair of voices is audible from the storeroom. Only one of the two speakers is clearly audible. The other's voice is too low to make out clearly.
"There were ... complications. The price has gone up."
"..."
"Look, it's nothing personal, but business is business."
"..."
"Well, I feel for you, but that's none of my concern. You needed a blue. I got you a blue. Lost a couple of good men doing it too."
"..."
"No doubt, but whose fault is that?"
"..."
You hear the sound of chairs being pushed back, and the scrape of metal on metal.
"Well you can certainly try ..."
In the forest ...
Lumpy and the demon battle face-to-face, tooth and nail vs. shadowstuff flail. The demon scrabbles in so close that Lumpy has difficulty bringing the flail to bear effectively. The demon's breath is hot and sulfurous as it slashes and bites at Lumpy, opening up more gashes.
As blood runs down Lumpy's torso, his limbs begin to feel heavy, and his vision tunnels down until all he can see is the demon's twisted facial features. From far, far away it seems, he can hear shouts and footsteps.
Thokk, Evendur, Tiriel, and Callos burst through the trees almost simultaneously.
OOC: Demon is knocked down, but stands up and slashes for 6 damage. Full attack next round results in two slashes for 8 and 8 damage, but its bite misses.

Re: The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
Achkby, Halfling Sorcerer
You hear a sharp intake of breath from Achkby behind you.
A... a blue? A blue dragon?
Achkby grips his spear more tightly, looking around at the others with wide eyes.
"We let them duke it out, and then we go in ourselves!" he hisses to the others.

The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
Callos
They had made it! They had finally caught up to....!!
"Lumpy!" Shocked eyes watched the half-orc take the blows. He had always seemed so....impregnable but now this demonkin was ripping and slicing into him, and from the looks of it Lumpy couldn't take much more of a beating from the thing. Black eyes narrowed into chips of opal as he glared at the demonkin. He himself may not be able to fight that demon spawn capably but those who had come with him where another story. Callos's hands were a blur, rushing through the arcane motions, almost fumbling them a few times. Voice a candance of arcane formulas before his hand began to glow with a gray light.
A familiar feeling came over Tiriel then. Something she had felt back in the forest when those wolf creatures had them cut off from everyone else and at a disadvantage. A feeling of growth and swelling until she towered above the rest of them once more.
"Shiney...sic him. Leave him alive if you can. I think we all have questions for it." the necromancer coldly stated once his spell was finished.
((OOC: Well I can't give the whole "Hulk smash!" treatment but I can at least make the acid resistant (I think) half-celestial the size advantage for pinning the thing down.))
-
Re: The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
((OOC Does Lumpy get an AoO in there?))
Lumpy
Lumpy takes each blow stoicly, feebly thrashing in response. He'd lost a lot of blood, used a lot of energy. The demon was obviously taking a lot out of him, but the cold air saps anything he had left. His responses gradually grow sluggish, careless.
To his credit, he never once lets a cry of fear or pain slip from between his savage lips, up to the very end. When he does go down, it is without fanfare. A soldier's death on the field, the burly orc crumples, seeming to fold into himself as his sizzling weapon slips from his grip beside him.
-
Re: The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
Tiriel
Cold, gut-wrenching shock and horror held her paralyzed until bubbling anger overcame it. She instinctively reaches for her sword, only to let her hand fall back, knowing that another attack with it could break her weapon and do little damage. Before she can decide another course of action a strange, yet semi-familiar feeling rushes through her body. Callos's words dimly echo in her ears as she suddenly finds herself... in a much better position to hurt the monster who had just taken down the burly half-orc.
That smart alec wizard is deadmeat when this is all over.
Tiriel closes within 10' of the demon and attempts to grapple it.

Re: The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
Katrin
A blue dragon... eep. What does that mean, 'you needed a blue?' The different eggs must have been sent to different places... and why a blue for here?
Achkby's whisper distracts Katrin's train of thought. Not wanting to alert the arguing voices to her presence, she simply says "Agreed."
Katrin tries to draw her shortsword as silently as she can while straining her eyes and ears to get some idea of what is going on inside the storeroom.

Re: The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
Evendur
Evendur catches hold of the faltering halforc as he falls...
Damn these creatures to the nine hells, I knew this was going to happen...
... lowering him gently to the gorund as, closing his eyes, he focuses on the life giving energy of Sune that flows through and arround him, the tender strands of energy that bind together the living, holding the soul within...
...don't fail me now, Sune, don't fail me now, please...
... and, so doing, passes a hand over Lumpy's various wounds, binding them with the force, the beautiful force of life, just like the beauty he has sworn to protect with his own life and his faith.
About him his soft light seems to gather, lighting the batlefield less, making him an almost blinding figure. The light gradualy concentrates around his gauntleted hand flowing out in golden threads, stiching the wounds of the fallen halforc. Bloodflow ceases and small wounds close. Lumpy's breath comes easier as more of the light flows into him through Evendur's healing hands.
When he stands his light is faded, the lustre gone from his once shining armor. Still, a glimmer remains, and in that, he can be seen to bend tohis sword and turn to face the vile creature that has bestowed these wounds.
[Ooc: Lay hands on Lumpy for full amount, 4x7=28hp back for him.sorry about the luminous display. Re: The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
In the forest ...
Tiriel grows with each step until she stands 12 feet tall. She picks up the demon with her gloved hands and slams it against a tree trunk. The demon claws at Tiriel, but its claws find little purchase against her enlarged vambraces.
Evendur gently lays Lumpy on the ground, his armor glowing with increasing brightness until both he and the half-orc disappear in a blaze of yellow light.
In the armor shop ...
There is a brief scuffle, during which you realize that there were more than just two people in the back room. With a crash, the light goes out, leaving the entire shop in complete darkness.
Someone cries out in pain. A body hits the floor with a dull thud.
"Where is he?"
"Varget! Timor! Here!"
"Where?"
A body stumbles into the curtain, tearing it from its mountings. Thin metal rings clatter on the wooden floor, scattering in all directions.
With a fwish, a sunrod is lit. With the curtain torn away, light floods the front room as well as the back, blinding your dark-adapted eyes for a moment ...

Re: The Necromancer's Pact VII: Lake of Tears II
Lumpy
Blinding white light surrounded him on what he can only assume is the verge of life and death. He couldn't say which side he belonged on, nor was he sure which side he would rather be on. Flitting thoughts flashed about almost visibly, ephemeral and unfocused.
Duty. Duty to a cause, to people, places. Pledges made, to others, to himself, to the dead. Freshest and foremost were his companions. Despite the haze, he knew them all as clear as anything. By name even, even if he never voiced that fact. Sethra linked them all- that pledge wasn't to him, but for him. Blood for blood, death for the fallen.
But foremost. . . Evelyn. He knew her by name alone, from the raging tirades of her husband. Never had he known her, the woman whose life he'd first taken. Whose death weighed heaviest upon his soul. He could never know in the mortal world why she had opted to die when it should have been him. Why anyone would choose that. Why the only one who might ever ha dloved him had left him alone in this world.
His mother. Death and what lay beyond held answers to all of these questions, he was sure of it. She was somewhere there. Part of him yearned to follow her there, to be done with it. But he couldn't. He held one pledge, closer to his core than anything he had ever known. One he'd made as soon as he was old enough to understand the meaning of it.
If the price for his living was her dying, then he'd be damned if she didn't get her money's worth. Every step, every moment passed in joy or misery, was hers. Was FOR her. The only gift he knew to give back. And if that kept him from her, she would wait. He trusted she would wait; she was the kindest person he'd never met.
Death beckoned, the slow flow of eternity. But life pulsed, the tumultous fury that could swallow anything. Lumpy returned to that pulse, serene in one instant, alive with a swirl of emotion in the next. Rage mostly, that something had almost taken that which was most precious from him, but sorrow for what that truly meant, alongside the joy of it's aversion. But oh how the rage was most important now. . .
He'd barely been conscious a few seconds when he burst into motion. Empty hands scrabbled through the snow around him, looking for his flail. He'd dropped it somewhere, and he needed it, a death dealer. He needed it to protect everything he valued. If that demon was still among the living, it would soon regret it.
