Re: My Little Pony: Avatar Is Magic II
Hey Tabs, would you mind me claiming one of the up for grabs? I'd like the Empress-Pony, but... well, I like this one too. :)

Hallo, pony artists. I recently undertook my first (serious) attempt at crafting a pony. I was just curious what you guys thought, if I could get critique, etc. It took something akin to 4 hours of work @.@ Ponies are hard to draw.

Re: My Little Pony: Avatar Is Magic II
It's pretty good for a first serious attempt.
Just a few minor details;
-The way you've done the horn makes it look like it's curved. I can't tell if this is an optical illusion or it actually curving.
-The front left leg seems unnaturally stiff.
-Her left eye needs work. Not sure exactly, but it looks to be a combination of it being the wrong shape as well as the pupil being rather large.
-The tail is good, but there are some bits that could probably be smoothed. But that looks like you probably just forgot them.
-The line of the mouth should probably be one smooth curve instead of having an abrupt turn near the end. As it is, I'm a bit confused as to what her expression is supposed to be.
The only other issues are a matter of personal design preference, so they don't really count.

Re: My Little Pony: Avatar Is Magic II
Mark is a bit high, and the raised leg could use a bit of work, but besides that, nice.
Though, why different colour of 'muzzle'? :smallconfused:

Re: My Little Pony: Avatar Is Magic II
Hey there, GW! Just thought I'd say I think that the design you've created there is simply beautiful. The design is simple, but plays up enough of its details to be quickly memorable. The streaks in the mane look very nice, and while I think that the pale patch around the mouth is a bit odd and a bit too eye-catching, ultimately it is a unique detail that helps to set your pony apart. Also? The cutie mark is lovely, and compliments the coat well.
The critiques given above by Elemental are valid, but I didn't think that any of them were so major as to really detract from my appreciation from your work. The one thing I would say: The area at the hoofs, where the coat ends? (There is probably a term for that, I am not well-versed in horse anatomy) Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that such a feature was predominantly used for males like Big Mac. Otherwise, an absolutely lovely design, especially for your first attempt. Bravo.

Will that be your avatar after derpatar week?

Fetlocks. And yes, it is primarily a masculine feature when it comes to ponies.
However, that's not the case with actual equines, so it's more of a design preference. It's the same with having a different coat colour in parts.

Re: My Little Pony: Avatar Is Magic II
Ponies aren't hard! That one might be a bit more detailed, but what do you guys think of this?

PS:Ponies aren't easy, either.

Re: My Little Pony: Avatar Is Magic II
So, this is my first time posting in this thread (or admitting anywhere that I've become a brony) but I'd like to request a pony avatar, if you all don't mind! I'd basically like it to be a pony-fied version of my current avatar.
Gender: Male
Type: Earth pony/Pegasus pony/Unicorn pony/Other: Pegasus Pony
Coat color: The shade of light brown/tan of my current Horus avatar.
Mane color and style: Black for the tail, you won't really be able to see the mane.
Eye color: Gold for the right eye, and silvery white for the left.
Cutie mark: Eye of Horus.
Pose: Standing with one of the front legs raised, with his wings spread.
Expressions: I can't really decide between cocky and smug. So how about... confident?
Accessories or costumes: The Pharaoh's crown my current avatar is wearing, modified to fit a pony.

I reserve this for rather obvious reasons. :smallamused:

Wouldn't gryphon be better choice then? :smallconfused:

I thought about it, but ended up deciding to go with Pegasus because it would be an actual pony then. So I suppose what I'm looking for is more of an adaptation of my current avatar than a straight up translation.
If that makes sense.

-The colour you chose for the outline of the mane and the outline of the body are very similar, and I didn't realise they were different until I zoomed in close enough to see it. They could perhaps benefit by being more different from one another.
-The line at the top of the eye should really be black.
-Something about the wings seems off, but I can't think of it...
-Finally, the teeth. The line of the teeth shouldn't follow the line of the edge of the head. Also, never put a dark outline on them because it makes them look dirty. See below:
Notice here how the teeth don't go all the way to the edge of the head and that they have their own outline separate outline colour. The colour I use is a very pale blue-grey.
Anyway... It's not terrible, it just needs work. I suggest practicing with Earth Ponies to begin with to get the body shape down properly. From there, it's a quick jump into Pegasi and an even quicker jump into Unicorns.
Oh, and before I forget, the legs that are behind the other legs should be a darker shade to add the illusion of some depth.

Cute!
The horn seems a little misplaced, but that's about it. The pter stuff is technically correct-ish, but doesn't detract from the design at all. I like her a lot.

Hm, thanks for the tips. The horn is a little curved, that was on purpose. I redid the leg and the eye, the I can't get the eye to look right x.x

I lowered the mark and worked the leg. The muzzle coloration was just a design choice I like. *shrug*

Aww, thank you. I really like her myself. The fetlocks were another design choice that may be unorthodox but I enjoy. I think of them as more lacy on her, but that's just me. I hadn't noticed it being that masculine, but I'm just getting into the pony fandom.

un tangent? Explain this term please?

In artsy terms, a tangent is two or more lines that are touching or near touching (usually). Tangents can mess with depth and the focus of the image. So the pony's left front leg almost appears to be contained in the right front leg because the lines run so close.
-
Re: My Little Pony: Avatar Is Magic II
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tangent
It's not strictly an "artsy term," but yeah being mindful of tangents in a piece makes you a better artist. Another way to go about it is just remembering that overlaps are pretty (and add depth)--also I guess it really encompasses a few more things in artsy terms than otherwise...

Re: My Little Pony: Avatar Is Magic II
Well, it's artsy in that people don't really complain about tangents in mathematics. :smalltongue: But yeah, I think geometry came first.
